THIS AND THE TABLEIST GALAXY IS ALL LOVE. IT ALL TELLS THE STORY OF IT BEING USED AS AN MUSIC INSTRUMENT.... SALUTE TO EM' ALL.
How is it that I'm just now discovering this? I'm so happy to see experimenting with sound is alive and well.
MAN... TAKING SOUNDS AND REMANIPULATING SOUNDS TO MAKE BEATS OR ANY SOUNDSCAPES IS BEAUTIFUL ❤️ TAKING THOSE SOUNDS AND SCRATCHING WITH THEM.... IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
a few Canadian names to be aware of in relation to "turntables as instruments" are Esther Bourdages, Carrie Gates, and Martin Tétrault
Thanks for sharing and all those pushing the medium. It is worth noting that DJ Steve Dee of the X-Men made great advancements in the art of “juggling” two turntables to create tempo/beat changes.
He didn't create it. The British DJ Cutmaster Swift, who won the DMC World Title in 1989 created it, and Steve copied it. Swift went to New York in '88 and '89, to compete in the old New Music Seminar battle, and he was filmed juggling, in the apartment of a DJ called Clarke Kent, and he later showed the video to Steve. There's a channel on here called HBS Music Archaeology, that did an interview with Swift's crew-mate DJ Bizness, who explains the whole thing.
If any of yall would like a killer turntable set, please check out Otomo Yoshihide's performance here ruclips.net/video/wNgPvVPGyf0/видео.html

That was beautiful. Thank you.
Beautifully done!
This is AWESOME.
Wow, this is great!
❤
This story seems to forget the firsts of them : Pierre Schaeffer (and Pierre Henry) who were the pionners of concret music, i.e. of a music made from turnables, used as instruments at the and of forties. It was just at the end of the second world war... before Cage and the followers. Etudes de bruits, Symphonie pour un homme seul, etc
Intresting vid, luv dub-plates, & 3 dek mixing. You can do stuff on deks you'll never do with a computer or CD's. Long live Technics!
very good they good sound vinyl i love them
very romantic view ... for be the year 2019
intriguing! I have been tagging my music with #weirdstuff, but now my music does not seem worthy of that hashtag after seeing this.
Art schol turntablism.
David Farnsworth yep
What is the name of the song between 4:53 and 5:45?
"What Comes Around," by Janek Schaefer. I must say, it's quite the trip!
💿 🤌 📀 ⚡️⚡️maria chavez hits ths spot quoting grandmasterflash. she is the spirit of a real turntablist among others (otomo yoshihide, christian marclay or martin tetreault (check his album maria calas). great doc
The turntable has been an instrument for so long and has been used in a multitude of genre's, why was only the weird indie artists covered?
Because documentaries on turntables have only been focused on the dj style of turntablism. Now it’s time for the experimentalists to have a chance in the limelight
@@marinewelsh9927 Yeah but none of us metal turntablists get any notoriety or attention.
@@CaptainDugog I’m sure you will get notoriety as a metal turntablist someday
I'm a tablist and im sampling this whole thing for looping 😆🤣😂
I have had no meds for mood swings today nor anti depressants...I feel normal
This is a bizarre documentary, considering it doesn't feature any clips of DJ battles. Does the maker of the documentary even know they exist? One of my favourite clips is of the British DJ, DJ Woody, performing at the 2003 ITF World Final. I recommend everyone watch it.
J-Boogie Brown ... “Negative Nancy” should be your pseudonym.
So I take it you know nothing about DJ battles either? Watch the video I mentioned above, and you'll see that battles are also about what the turntable can do OTHER than just play records.
@@j-boogiebrown9961 pretty sure the point is that there are dozens, if not hundreds of videos about DJing & that kind of turntablism. it would be hard for anyone into music to not know about that part of the music world. on the other hand, i guarantee most people that see this have never seen most of these things before. I'm sure you can easily find documentaries, performance videos & DJ battles alll over youtube talking about & showing the styles&people you are bringing up. Much less light is shined on this stuff & there's absolutely no reason not to let it get some light.
I'm a bit confused that turntablism is not beeing mentioned in this video. Titeling a video "The turntable as instrument" and not mentioning turntablsim even once is like making a video featuring people that are using violins as drum sticks and then titeling it "The art of playing the violin".
Nothing against this experimental type of turntable music. But if someone totally new to this topic watches this video, they would miss a very important part. They would think that making music using a turntable is always very random and noisy. They wouldn't know that there is/was this rich culture around the turntable as musical instrument. They wouldn't know that one can play concrete drum patterns, melodies and more using a turntable and a mixer.
With all the technology these days; computer-generated sounds even Foley, this looks like an awesome way to damage or ruin a perfectly good turntable & stylus
Whoah.. It's not like turntableism didn't rise hip hop. This artist has not just done what... So many have done. But created it! Hell the end of record in a song... No ones ever put that in a song. Such innovators, just a bunch of artists spouting stuff thats always been around and trying to go "So new and innovative". Artists not musicians.
