I met Sean after he came and spoke to my pupils several years ago. Since then I've kept a close look in on how he's been doing and slowly working my way through his books. Just about to finish the round the world cycling book. Sean if you could do another adventure soon as I need another book to read!
Thank you Sean. You're videos have inspired me. I have also read your book on the topic. I gave my employer notice last week, I am leaving to tour on June 5th! My first ever tour will be the great divide :P Wish me luck! Thank you
I just finished your audiobook for this trip and wow it was riveting. I think I could be in a similar position now as you were back then. Closing in on 30 reevaluating some things and ready for an adventure. What didn't come across to me was how you went from seemingly nothing to 200 miles a day in 6 months? Personally, I wouldn't be racing but even half that would be a major effort. I'm thinking of cycling one of the eurovelo routes - Atlantic to the black sea.
I took a bit of a risk without spare tyres but I guess I got lucky. There are always ways to fit any bust tyre. I know people that have used bits of a Peanut Butter lid. I also posted new tyres to bike shops/friends around the world. Sleeping. I just slept where I could, under houses, behind park bushes, bus shelters. If the weather was really bad I stayed in a hotel.
Entire kit weighs in at about 16kgs I try and carry enough high energy food to keep me going for 24 hours I stop and eat 3 sit down meals a day and the rest of the time I eat on the bike
Hola Sean! first of all i love your minset, its very inspiring. Secondly, I want to know where you leave and how you secure your bike when you go out to a bar or pub or anything like it?? Thank you!
Yes you can fit a derailleur to the frame but your would need to have a whole new wheel or take the hub off. You can have both. Some people put a front derailleur with 3 rings which can be good if you need it. But honestly. I have thrown my hub all over the show and its took 9 flights and still works. They are good and you'd be pretty unlucky for it to break.
Great kit. I hope eveythin has gone smoothly in the tour. Could you tell me the model of this dyanmo and pattery pack system? And maybe where can I get them?
I must admit that the idea of cycling around the world without a tent and a pannier rack for additional food and clothing makes me shiver. I agree with the built-in gearing and the V-brakes, though.
Yeah, I've read that they're pretty tough. I think if I was daft enough to try a long ride like yours I'd want all the options available just incase. Hope you're well rested after your journey, well done. p.s. the only reason I'm forgiving you for this late reply is because I feel sorry for you about getting ran over by the truck. ;)
Love the bike by the way! Was the bike made to measure for you by Thorn? (Did you give them body dimensions)? I believe that Rourke Bicycles have a kind of 'rig' in their shop which allows them to build an individual a 'dead on balls' accurate bicycle, tailor made for respective human frames!
With regards to the gears, do you have the option of fitting a derailer if the speedhub gets damaged and you're in the middle of nowhere? Good luck on your trip.
I didn't realise you used an internal hub gear until I saw this video, how did you find it on the ride? I can see the advantages but if that broke on the road you would be shafted. I follow your adventures closely, wish I had the balls.
How much did the equipment in your front bag (mattress etc.) cost..if you don't mind lol. I'm training to go around the wolrd on my bicycle but I want to take my time..haha
Scotland to Greece, you vote 23c then? I hear some people ranting that 23c are only preferable if the tarmac is perfect. I'm taking quiet tour roads with a similar pack to your self.
christian koenig Check out Juliana Buhring. She never cycled a bike before she cycled the world with only 8 months training beforehand and the same lack of equpiment.
evomoralesCO Yes, I completely underestimated Sean. I admit, and apologize. Those people are just another league, I cannot compare. It is so unbelievable, I thought it was absurd. It is not.... Chapeau to them!!!
Where's your TENT, mate? Are you concerned about your EXPENSIVE Thorn RUSTING when you ride in WET weather? Or how about someone STEALING your bike when you're sleeping or away from it - especially in 3rd world countries; or even the U.S.A!

Great info Sean. Thanks. Love the way the Train Horn cuts in at 0:42 when you say 'Thorn'. Even the Train horn sounds like a 2 part Th-Orn.
Just revisiting this whilst reading the book!! 10 years later
Well done on the trip.
Marvelous.

I'm listening to the audiobook at the moment and this is like seeing a legend come to life!
I just listened to both in 3 days wonder if that's a world record
Very minimalist..... Hope to be doing something like this 2023
Good luck on the trip. Id love to be doing the same... maybe one day :(
Good luck mate! Looks like you're really set up for your journey.
horrified by the lack of kit....chapeau for enduring with it...amazing !
Read your book. Love it
Good luck. When will you upload the video of your round the world? Looking forward to it.
Nice bike & good lightweight gear, going light will add so many more miles a day to your total.
Entire kit weighs in at about 16kgs
I try and carry enough high energy food to keep me going for 24 hours
I stop and eat 3 sit down meals a day and the rest of the time I eat on the bike

How much does the bike+gear weigh?
How much food are you planning on carrying on a daily basis?
How often will you have to stop to re-supply?
With regards to the gears, do you have the option of fitting a derailer if the speedhub gets damaged and you're in the middle of nowhere?
Good luck on your trip.
quite shocked you didn't fit mudguards. cool kit and bike tho :)
not necessary a tent?
Can somebody tell me what bottles this are? Thx
What's the USB charging system called?
Felicitaciones!!!!!
¿Qué medida son las cubiertas ?....¿700 x 32?

The Brooks saddle is the best saddle ever made i think. You didnt mention a tent.
No tent, just the bivvy bag.
Where is the link to your mattress

All my kit except bike cost about £1000. Quite expensive but needed the best kit for the race.
Scotland to Greece, you vote 23c then? I hear some people ranting that 23c are only preferable if the tarmac is perfect.

DONT go 23c. Go 28c. Back in 2012 23c was considered the fastest. Not now.
You are traveling very svelte but you don't have any means to carry food or additional clothing. What about sleeping accomodations and spare tires?
I’d love to know the pros and cons of sleeping in graveyards
No tools? No Rohloff sprocket tool, spare sprockets?
weren't you afraid of wild animals/stray dogs?
Around the world with no racks or fenders!!! Good luck with that.
Lack of paneer? I don't have any cheese on my bike either!
buy cheese when see store for few days . or day . lighter .
where is your food? yo uhave to continuously consume food as you cycle :O
Why not go for fun? It's more fun.
If you are not super over fit you will be drastically under equiped.
Haha. I averaged 170 miles per day and this kit did get me around the world in 2012.
Sean Conway
Ok. You are far over the benchmark of 'super fit'.
Wow. What you did is just beyond. Chapeau monsieur!!!
I would recommend taking a tent though. ha
