as a deaf person I laughed because thing was trying to alert others to a bad situation and yet they never bothered to learn finger sign language " get out Danger " hahaha
In the later movies, it's canon that Thing can sign, but he "stutters" when he gets nervous and has to resort to morse code tapping. The family learned the ASL alphabet, at least, which is useful when the context of hand placement in relationship to a body is impossible. Yes, they could have done better, but the amusement factor of a mangled message would have been lost.
Charles Addams kept a collection of items sent to him by fans including a working crossbow, which he said would come in handy if he ever had to confront a burglar
1:18 I think "we must accept out friends as what they are" was really significant to Gomez when they just met because they imply that Gomez was bullied or at least judged for having a pet hand, and probably a lot of other stuff growing up (like being kind of a coward and sitting in front of a humidifier often for his bronchitis), so I think part of the reason he immediately fell for mortica is she not only accepted the strange aspects of who he was but enjoyed taking part in them
wait what if the reason the addams don't react poorly to people being afraid of or judging them is because gomez and mortica were dealing with it for so long that they learned to ignore it and they raised Wednesday and Pugsley with the same attitude
Thing has always been my favorite of the Addams Family characters. I understand why Thing was only shown in the box on the TV series but why was it that he kinda would show part of the arm but in the movie he's only a hand with a stump. Yeah I know it just bothered me as a kid but still an awesome idea from Charles Addams
Thing was suppose to be just a hand, that was his whole concept. He wasn't suppose to be a hand and the full arm. The only reason it showed the full arm in the old TV series, is due to them having a person under the table using their real hands. Unlike in the movie where they were actually able to just show a hand like they originally wanted.
Is it just me, or is that one impressive special effect that they did for the movies? Maybe it's a very easy trick to pull off, just a guy wearing a literal green sleeve to cover his arm, but I still believe that that hand is actually there!
For a character that has no lines, he sure has the funniest jokes. And for someone with no face, he has the biggest, sassiest personality of all the Addams'.
Yeah, as much as I appreciate Thing’s Lassie-esque portrayal in the Sonnenfeld films I do think they inadvertently took away from Thing’s mystique. As far back as the original cartoons there was always a mystery as to what Thing’s hand (or even hands!) was connected to, but ever since the Sonnenfeld version became the de facto standard he’s much easier to define and understand. Thing’s name itself is now a misnomer as well, since he’s just a hand there’s no reason for a vague name when they could just call him “Handy” or “Palmer”.

We all can learn from Morticia.

It's funny that sometimes in the show he was a left hand and other times he was a right hand.
Thing was ambidextrous and multi-talented, a very handy actor.
+Ben W
Indeed he always led a helping hand to those who needed a hand with their work.
In the series, I believe Thing is canonically a right hand; Ted Cassidy would switch hands every now and then just to see if anyone noticed

It sucks that they didn't have the effects to create thing as just a hand in the 60's show.

I respect that thing but he’s so cute the way he crawls around and help his friends. They could sure use a helping hand!
Thing doesn't even have a face and he STILL more Expressive than Kristen Stewart 😭😭😭
Ted Cassidy, who played Lurch on the TV Addams Family also, his hand played Thing.
Most of the time, that is... Thing had no official actor ( appearing "as itserlf" and all), and if needed any right hand would do.
right or left. for fun ted sometimes used his left hand, which can be seen in many of the old clips.
Remember the episode were thing runs away and Lurch becomes depressed?
Unless both characters had to be in the same frame at which point another person lent their hand so to speak
