    I have to agree with the 4-2-3-1 crowd. 3 had great set pieces, but it's plot was the absolute weakest in the series. The story with Nate and Sully was good, sure, but when Marlowe hands him over to the pirates, that's where it nosedives. There is LITERALLY no reason why Marlowe wouldn't have just killed Nate, as she already had what she wanted. It was the biggest leap of logic in any game I have EVER played, and for that reason alone it's nowhere near as good as 2. Also, Lazaravich was a MUCH better final boss than Talbot.

    • @Guhsteh
      @Guhsteh 8 лет назад

      3 is a fantastic game, but there's so many problems compared to the others, and it tried to copy U2. I'm so glad U4 is different.

    • @honz1122
      @honz1122 8 лет назад +1

      +Guhsteh I think the Boat scene was just the worst decision by them. That's when I was just tired of Amy Henning telling the story. Although I wish the ending in U4 was just a little bit more stronger and dramatic, it is still a 10/10 for me.

    • @kejucity
      @kejucity 8 лет назад

      +Chris Taylor I agree with the 4-2-3-1, but the pirate got his hands on Nate himself not Marlowe (He knocks out Nate after you beat up Talbot), she probably didn't care about Nate anymore and likely already left when Nate was running after Talbot. Still agree that it's, nowhere near as good as 2 story and character wise. Also the arena fights in 2 were much better.

    • @Guhsteh

      +honz1122 The ship graveyard? The set piece one? I actually loved that, but the problem is that they built the story around the set pieces, and Neil and Bruce (who worked on 2) were working on TLoU.

    • @sobversion3
      @sobversion3 8 лет назад +1

      +Chris Taylor the whole pirate narrative was just filler (epic it turned out to be) but it was a big waste of time. him conveniently washing ashore in Yemen? trash. that and its said that Amy hennig was writing around the setpieces which were formed 1st which is probably what fucked up the story.

  • @RobinGaming

    I will never understand why Greg and Colin love Uncharted 3 so much. The pacing is way worse, the game constantly skips to different locations (literally every 2 chapters with a black fade) and therefore feels so incoherent compared to U1 and U2(where chapter 5->26 all transition naturally between locations, you actually get to the destination yourself the entire time), the "drunk" animation system, underwhelming villains, worse shooting mechanics, weird enemy AI who really dont know what theyre doing, cartoony graphics except near the end at the desert part. I could go on and on.
    But hey, it's all opinions of course. I will personally always consider U3 the worst of the console games in terms of single player. Golden Abyss in my opinion doesn't come close to any of them. Still a good Vita game though :)

    • @MarshallElite1
      @MarshallElite1 8 лет назад +8

      Hey robin I think the main reason is that 3 is more personal you know the sully and nate relationship as a father figure and stuff and Uncharted 2 was more like the set pieces and great story my personal favourite if we compare 2 and 3 would be U2 but so far U4 is the best one.

    My girlfriend watched me play all of Uncharted 4 without having seen anything from the series before. She was just as invested in the characters as I was and she felt like she really had a unique experience by the end of it. It's interesting to me that Uncharted 4 can, seemingly, provide an emotional and powerful experience regardless of how familiar you are with the series.

    I don't buy the "better set-piece in 2" argument. The train is great, but I don't think it's any better than the burning chateau, the sinking ship or the plane crash in 3. It isn't worse, I just think that the there is far more happening in 3 than 2. Plus that Young Drake flashback was unexpected and awesome.
    I am 4>3>2>GA>1

    • @DefinitelyNotJoao
      @DefinitelyNotJoao 8 лет назад +3

      +Jonathan Coit I agree. I think 2's train wreck was so memorable because it was so fresh. Also, since you began the campaign on the wreck, you constantly wanted to know how you got there, thus impregnating the scene in your memory. U3's set-pieces were larger in scope and also greater in quantity.

      I also think that UC1 at the time was a 10/10 game. Each game is an excellent crafted experience with unexpected, emotional and exciting moments. To say that I prefer 3 over 2 doesn't downplay the way I felt when I played Uncharted 2. All are great. 3 is just an even more exciting experience for me personally.

    • @paulmcg7

      The boat is probably the best setpiece in 3 but to then realise that the boat section could be cut out with no consequence to the overall story ruined the pacing of it for me. 2 felt so much better paced out than 3 and more cohesive story. And the boat and plane were shown off so much in footage before it's release that it didn't have the same impact as the train did.
      The supernatural element such as why Talbot was magic was never fully explained either. Making the djinn into a hallucination rather than an actual supernatural presence didn't have the same weight to it as something that was really affecting people in the game. Although I found the Descendents in 1 to be the best, mainly because I wasn't expecting it when I bought the game and was terrified when it came to that part where you're all alone in the Nazi base.

  • @bobba515
    @bobba515 8 лет назад +9

    Anyone rating 3 over 2 is just not good at critically analyzing something.
    Uncharted 3 has a mess of a story, that doesn't make sense, has plot holes, characters just disappear and overall isn't very satisfying. The pacing is also terrible. With some stages being overlong, others being way short. It also has very poorly balanced, with the flaws becoming especially apparent on higher difficulties. Many of the firefights are just tedious, where you have to defend a position for long stretches of time with enemies spawning all around you, even BEHIND you. And can pinpoint grenades literally on your feet when you are behind cover.
    Uncharted 2 has a perfect story for being basically an Indiana Jones style adventure. It has characters driven by logical motives, a good bad guy, and impeccable pacing. Its also very well balanced, and never feels unfair.

    • @kingofhearts222
      @kingofhearts222 8 лет назад +2

      +Atwa Regarding the story I was about to say something very similar. A good story doesn't merely ask interesting questions, but also answers them later on. That's just fundamental storytelling. Uncharted 3 didn't do that. That's why people say the story just falls apart as the game goes on, and why it's so fundamentally flawed in comparison to the others. For any criticism about U2's supernatural element being "unrealistic" or whatever, it's at least logical within the Uncharted universe because in the Uncharted universe we already knew supernatural stuff exists. When you just accept the rules of the world you're in (for example, like you said, it's an Indiana Jones style adventure), while it may be underwhelming to some, it makes sense in the self-contained world of Uncharted.
      U3 just felt like they were throwing stuff at the wall (which they basically admitted by saying they were more focused on set pieces and action sequences and then built the story around them). Gameplay-wise I did think it was fun, and the graphics and set pieces were all amazing (not shockingly since the jump from U1 to U2 was much more noticeable, but amazing nonetheless). But I definitely have to argue with anyone who says the story is better than that of U2.

    • @sandromnator
      @sandromnator 8 лет назад +2

      I have to disagree. The although the story's pace felt odd, it never retracted from the overall experience. The plot made sense(you also have to keep in mind that this is a game, anything can happen), and the graphics/set pieces trumps anything in U1/2. Don't know where you are getting the spawning enemies from behind, never happened to me, even in harder difficulties. Uncharted 3 had more character development, and more personal topics than U1 & U2 ever had.
      It fleshed out Nate and Sully's history, and nate's relationship with Elena. U3 arguably had the better gameplay. The animations looked lifelike, instead of cartoony like U1/2. Melee combat was the best, take downs looked cinematic as all hell, stealth was improved, being able to take down enemies by pouncing on them was a nice touch.
      The only flaws I can think of are the villains not getting enough narrative attention, and that enemies don't react to being shot. Other than those, this is factually the best game in the trilogy. Newcomers would agree.

      "Anyone rating 3 over 2 is just not good at critically analyzing something." Is just a self-important way of saying that whoever disagrees with you is stupid. Just stop. I even agree that 2 is better than 3, but I don't have any desire to insult people who think otherwise.

    • @jman2856
      @jman2856 8 лет назад

      Uncharted 3 has a deeper narrative compared to Uncharted 2, plot wise it's pretty standard, but the added back story of Nate and Sully certainly added alot of depth to the story and helped develop Nate's character.

    • @23madberty
      @23madberty 8 лет назад

      The other two in the trilogy have fire fights just as tedious, sometimes even more so. And in Uncharted 3 you can throw back grenades, so it's less of a problem than the other games as well. Same with some stages going on too long. Anyway, your critique on 3's gameplay can be applied to just about any other game in the series. I don't see why you're singling 3 out. Although I do agree that some of the characters are quite pointless.

    The thing literally everyone I've spoken to about this seems to forget is that during the brainstorming of plot ideas for U3, everyone was told to go away come up with a set piece concept, to be put forward and then the best ones would be chosen and a storyline was built around them. However, someone high up at Naughty Dog clearly panicked and decided to use all the set pieces, resulting in the storyline struggling, and frankly almost failing, to successfully flow and make any sense. That's why in the space of a 10 hour game, there are 8 different cuts in the script where we are sent to a completely different location. Comparing this to U1 (2 cuts very early on in 10 hours) and U2 (4 cuts in 12 hours), this is quite simply ridiculous. These cuts made me feel like I was constantly being removed from the game, and just being plonked down in another part of the world, to then be told "carry on..." leading ultimately to the downfall of U3.
    I'd also like to give a mention to the pacing of the games. I truely believe a great way of analysing pacing and enjoyment is by replying games, as I have done for all 4 of the Uncharted franchise (a total of 22 playthroughs across both PS3 and PS4). Due to the fluid nature of the storyline of U1, this provided a better pacing. Now as we all know, U1's pacing is very dodgy given the ridiculous number of waves of enemies we encounter, but purely based on storyline, the pacing was still there enough to the point that I never felt bored. U2 storyline fluidity follows a similar pattern to U1 with minimal cuts in the story, however this time the pacing in terms of enemy encounters isn't over the top or annoying, meaning for an overall fantastic pacing for a brilliant game. Sadly, U3 falls short of the pacing of U2, and maybe even U1 as well. In my opinion there are two/three overly boring scenes found in U3. The 'Run to Ground' level, the whole of teenage Drake, and that goddamn awful walking over the desert scene (very beautiful, but so boring!), and not forgetting maybe a 4th scene, being the whole of the pirate shipyard, where the whole time I felt like I was just wasting my time trying to get back to the real story with Elena and Sully.
    I haven't played enough of U4 to have a massively critical opinion on it, but as a whole, and as a huge fan of the Uncharted Franchise, I personal feel that it is the best of the quadrilogy since it never felt dull, always had me with my eyes transfixed on the screen, and had what I believe to be the most complete and best overall story.
    Oh, and that epilogue. Best piece of simplistic artwork I have every seen. When Elena was looking at those two photos at the very end and it cut to the music, I nearly bust into tears.
    My Order:
    U4>U2>U1>U3

    After stepping back from Uncharted 4's experience for quite a while, I can definitly say it's the best one and more importantly, why! If you think about it, what were some issues people had with the Uncharted series?
    - Clichés (although really well executed);
    - Too linear;
    - Plot-holes [Talbot's tricks, what was Lazarevich's plan exactly, how did Nate conveniently got to the exact same place he was after being abducted by the pirates in U3 (not really a plot-hole but still bodered me), how didn't Lazarevich find the tomb located right where his men had been for the last 3 months in Borneu, etc]
    - Flawed stealth system;
    - Unbalance between gunplay, climbing and puzzles (usually great during the first half only to become a shootout heavy game in the second half);
    - Pacing issues regarding U3's approach to story-telling, sacrificing a better story flow for more locations and bigger set-pieces);
    - Unexplained questions (why are Nate and Elena constantly separating and coming back together? what's Nate's real name? what are his motivations?);
    - Supernatural element may turn some people off.
    Uncharted 4 is undoubtedly the best game in the series, because it not only avoids falling into any of the areas mentioned above, it actually improves the previous games by providing the end of a story arc and giving more meaning to the games that preceded, explaining everything that was left unsolved while still adding it's own flavour into the mix. SPOILERS FOR U4 AHEAD - The only aspects of the game that may somewhat fall into some of the areas mentioned above are the clichés, when treasure ends up being literally responsable for Rafe's death, but that is less of a cliché and more like the natural way to end a story like this. Some people may also consider him to be somewhat a stereotype, the rich spoiled psycho, but his motivations reflect a much deeper character and aren't just shoved in the players faces but rather subtly showed through the game until the very end when he breaks down. Story arc aside, other story element that was vastly improved upon is the mystery the characters discover through the adventure, this time it actually felt like there was a real tension behind it and thought put into it, it also avoided the supernatural element which for me wasn't a problem necessarily but I can see where people who don't like it are coming from, plus it's always nice to try something different. admitedly though, the best balance was achieved in U3 by still providing the supernatural element in gameplay without sacrificing the tone of the story, however, subjectively speaking, I actually prefer the more grounded approach of U4, and one could easily consider the «supernatural element» to be the mummies left by Avery, although to a much lesser degree.
    The other aspect that makes U4 the best in the series is the fact that not only it avoids every issue found on the previous games, it also picks every good aspect of the trilogy, and puts them together along with new additions of it's own. It has the location variety of U3 and the flow of the story of Uncharted 2, it has the personal approach to characters of U3 with the execution of U2 (backstories much more fleshed out). It also improves on the action happening on screen and set-pieces, integrating perfectly in the story and gameplaywise integrating all the core mechanics in them while giving you more control than ever over what's happening in those moments. the only thing it doesn't improve upon is the scope of the concepts for such scenes, it's all more chaotic in it's execution, but much simpler in terms of the concept itself behind these set-pieces, but one could also argue this just makes the game even better so that's not really a flaw.

    3 has been the only let down for me in the franchise, the puzzles were uninspired, the story was average and it was boring. It felt like a re-do of Uncharted 2 from another perspective but taking everything that made 2 so amazing. I honestly wonder if the main reason Colin & Greg put 3 over 2 is Sully's involvement. They mention plenty of other reasons why, and most of which I consider wrong (e.g. that 2 is a retread of 1, when 3 is far more of a retread of 2), but I think Sully's bare participation in 2 could be a key factor.

    Spoiler Alert.
    Finished the game last night and I definitely love this game. The relationships between characters, the dialogue and the fluidity of the story were unparalleled. Epilogue and Crash Bandicoot were the icing on the cake.
    However, when we rate games (or me at least), we rate them at the time they came out - if it weren't this way uncharted 2 would be a terrible game because the mechanics are outdated and the graphics inferior. I won't include U1, as I haven't played the game in almost 10 years.
    The excitement I felt playing uncharted 2 was much greater than with any game of the series, and I think ND was aware that they couldn't "surpass" the excitement of that game (as they tried to do with 3 with even bigger scripted events than U2's train), and so in U4 they focused more on the characters.
    Anyway, here's are my lists: I'd love to hear your opinions too.
    Best storytelling U4 > U2 > U3
    Best graphics U4=U3=U2 all these games were the best looking games I'd ever played on a playstation at their time
    Best settings (very subjective) U2 > U4 > U3 - I loved the contrast of the urban environments with borneo and the mountains in U2, but libertalia and Italy were very cool in U4
    Best set pieces/action U2 = U3 > U4
    Best puzzles U3 > U2 > U4
    Best characters U4 > U2 > U3
    Best experience U2 > U4 > U3
    And just since Colin spoke about it so much, TLOU comes above all Uncharteds, although U2 is still probably my favorite PS game, since I'm more into the action/adventure genre.
    What a game, what a franchise, and what a developer!

    Uncharted 2 IS better than 3. People don't think so because 2 came out first. It's better designed with a more coherent story and characters. We are seven years removed from 2 coming out and you're still trying to say people are blinded by the novelty of it? Bulllllllllshit.

    Alright... The cruise ship in 3 was a good set piece but did everyone forget Nate jumps off the ship, into the ocean and then conveniently washes ashore by where he needs to be? The whole cruise ship is literally just there to be a cool set piece, and has literally nothing to do with the story. You could take the entire pirate sequence out and have nothing change

      Wait a minute. You are saying that it's crazy that nate washes up onto a shore that he wasn't all that far away from when nate woke up on a seat in the train CONVENIENTLY just before it crashed. Also the propane tanks he blew up (he ran back when Flynn shot him, not forward) were NEVER there when we passed them in gameplay. Also he wasn't sitting in a chair.
      Also, about the setpiece being useless. I think you can kind of call it a useful setpiece if you think when elena said to Nate that they had two days head start on them, by span of time from when Nate was knocked out to when he washed out, it was about two days. If we had not gotten this boat and ship graveyard setpiece, then we would not have that badass plane sequence the game would end im guessing almost five or six chapters early. This added to the game's plot BIG time

    I would say 2>3>4>1. Greg Edmonson's music in 2 & 3 was far superior to Jackman's music in 4 in my opinion, and I enjoy the more light hearted Indiana Jones approach they take opposed to 4's more "mature" direction. That said, 4 has undeniably the best gameplay, so it still holds it's own with 2 & 3, it's just missing the Uncharted feel. And then 1 is a great game for it's time that has become dated (still solid though).

    People are going to hate me for this, but after thinking it about more, Uncharted 4 might be the dullest game in the series regarding gameplay. It has the best narrative in the franchise and is cohesive in it's set pieces the same way Uncharted 2 was cohesive. The problem for me, is that the gunfights that fundamentally makes Uncharted's campaigns very replayable is lacking in this entry and it can sort of make second playthroughs a bit of a chore ESPECIALLY in the beginning. I say this because I absolutely ADORE the gunplay segments in Uncharted 4, they're very dynamic and don't rely on the standard "take cover in one spot" approach like the other games, it's just that I REALLY wish there were more of them to the point where it was a good 50 to 50 ratio of climbing and shooting. The shooting segments are also a tad short if you're playing on Easy or even Normal.

    • @hitdoctor24
      @hitdoctor24 8 лет назад

      +J Man That's where I'm glad Naughty Dog decided to go a different route...the first three games had WAY too many gunfights in my opinion. They really nailed the pacing in 4, even if that does mean that second, third, etc. playthroughs are a bit dull. Reducing the amount of enemies in this game was the best possible decision Naughty Dog could've made

    • @Weaksauceization
      @Weaksauceization 8 лет назад

      +J Man I'd agree, until I got to chapter 8. It had a slow start, but once you get to chapter 8 and the chapel it starts to feel like the other Uncharted games again and returns with the setpiece moments. Still iffy on the stealth gameplay, not fun or Uncharted imo.

    • @hitdoctor24
      @hitdoctor24 8 лет назад

    I played every Uncharted game when they first came out. But recently marathoned the Nathan Drake Collection, and I can say going from those to 4, was really jarring. Uncharted 1 doesn't really hold up very well. The characters are still charming, and the environments are fine. But the Combat is extremely clunky and the enemy encounters are basically "wave killing" that become extremely tedious (especially since enemies are Bullet Sponges). Uncharted was a MASSIVE jump from UC1. They introduced cinematic camera angles (as you play the game) which makes a huge difference. The story presentation is much better (as are the graphics). The Combat is much better than 1, but it's still clunky. And Enemy encounters still feel like Wave Killing and can feel tedious. But unlike 1, the enemy encounters are much better integrated into the cinematic/story elements. Uncharted 2's story is really great, and has amazing pacing/story beats. It also prob still has the best "set pieces" in the series.
    Uncharted 3, I really don't get the praise. The game is a mess IMO. The script/story is really incoherent (especially the final act). I also felt like while some of the "levels" were breathtaking, they really didn't make sense in the context of the story, and just felt like the Devs created the levels first, and then the story later (Naughty Dog actually confirmed this was the case. They created levels/set piece ideas first, and then wrote the story around it. The game was also more rushed then past games). The combat was ACTUALLY worse then UC2, it took a step back and felt off. Although the Patch did sort of change that. Best thing I can praise UC3 for, is the graphics hold up the best out of any the old games. But the story was really subpar (only aspect i liked, was the Sully plot and his relationship with Nate). I actually think the "characters" in UC3 are the least likable, because the game really doesn't explain why relationships are where they are, and Nate is being completely selfish (without any consequences).
    Now to UC4, holy crap. This game completely overhauled the gameplay. Not only is it the best in the UC series, it's actually one of the best third person shooter controls this gen. Gunplay is actually snappy and responsive. The open level design allows for you to really tackle enemies however you want. And enemy encounters in this game feel the most integrated out of any UC game. They don't ever feel like wave killing. The Story of UC4 is on a whole different level. It's actually coherent, and fleshed out. It has a front to back narrative, where characters and their motivations are actually explored. It's easily the best UC4 story in terms of technical writing (I can understand some still liking UC2's store more, because the pacing/story beats were perfect for the genre it was going for). But overall, UC4 is easily the most mature game out of the series.
    I agree with Tim btw, UC4 almost serves as its own game/story. The way the story is told, anyone can jump in and experience it, and understand all the characters, and feel an emotional connection.

      +Tyler Gesselman I feel you. The game is fantastic, but at the end of the day what matters is how much fun you had. Really missed that one massive set piece from U2 (train) and U3 (plane and ship) - the collapsing buildings in 4 were fun, but I'd seen in in 2 and 3 before...

      +Tyler Gesselman This is a very weird Uncharted. The gunplay feels worse than 2 and 3 somehow, but the encounter design is better. There is also a very distinct lack of combat in general in this one, which really hurt the game's pacing for me. After I finished UC4, while describing it to someone else, I said I was not sure UC3 wasn't still my favorite of the series. He told me how UC2 was better because UC3 was just more of the same. I used the same argument Colin made in this video, that if UC3 had come out first, then most people would probably think it was better than UC2, because it is MORE. I think the supernatural twist in Drake's Fortune was the tripping point. The graphics were bland, but the level designs were very good. UC2 was a huge step forward, and I thought UC3 was certainly MORE of the goodness. The train sequence in UC2 is so talked about, but for me, there were more of those sequences in UC3. The French Chateau, the ship graveyard, the cruise ship, the plane. Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way, as Greg and Colin seem to feel exactly as I do.
    Uncharted 4 without a doubt has the best story of all the games, no contest at all. I think UC3 had better gameplay though. Right now I would probably just go ahead and give UC4 and UC3 a tie at 98/100, I'd give UC2 a 97/100 and UC1 an 89/100
    The Uncharted games don't do shooting as well as Gears of War, they don't do platforming and puzzles as well as Tomb Raider. But when you combine their pretty good shooting and the adequate platforming with the pacing, the story, the visuals and the set pieces, these games show they are just better than the sum of their parts.

    I disagree with Colin on the story, as far as self contained stories go, I think Uncharted 4 is the best in the series. I mean Drake's brother is the biggest part of the story I'd argue, and he's never mentioned in the previous games. Plus I think they do a good job in this game of establishing that Drake is a seasoned treasure hunter who's tired of that life. For me it'd go 4, 3, 2, 1. I think 4 is a LONG way ahead of the rest of the series

    I would like to see a racing spin-off game called Unkarted, featuring all your favourite Play Station characters! And since it's called Unkarted, you can use any "viechles" but karts, for example the horse Callus, from The Last Of Us. Maybe even a hunk-simulator called Unshirted, someone should make parodies like that!

    Will Greg ever live it down that Uncharted 3 is the reason he plays video games?

    Uncharted 3 was my first platinum trophy ever so it will always hold a special place in my heart (and my psnprofile page).

    As someone who played Uncharted 3 after The Last of Us I thought it was graphically closer to TLOU than it was to Uncharted 2. I dont know what it was about U3 but the gunplay is different and it felt weird in a way i dont understand fully. Even when playing the remasters it felt the same way.

    U4 is the best without a doubt in my opinion. best graphics (obviously), the story was the most compelling. where as with the other games I have favorite stand out moments (train from u2 and ship from u3) this one had so many good moments, even the more calm ones I love. hell, I even enjoyed the beginning where Nathan is scuba diving for his day job. there are more character moments in this game compared to the others and Rafe was the most interesting villain because he had the most unique reasons for doing what he did. he just wanted to prove he could do something and not just be seen as that guy who inherited it all. I love that. and the game play is the most fluid and the rope is awesome to use. I could go on, but u4 without a doubt.

    You can play Uncharted 4 without playing the others.
    If you really need backstory, Uncharted 1 has all that you need to know.

    First Uncharted game to play and it's almost perfect in every aspect, very solid game, a 10/10 in my opinion. Needs more options in multiplayer though, more game modes.

      Absolutely. 3 is far from 2 or 4, it was a huge let down for me and the only Uncharted I only finished once.

      seanie r golden abyss as the worst? What? It had the best gameplay out of 123. If you want a fast and fun uncharted golden abyss can't be beat.

    4, 2, 3, 1. Now I did play 1, 2, and 3 back to back to back on the PS3, so it could taint 3 a little bit. I hope to go back to the ND Collection soon and replay them to get a better feel for them all.
