Growing up with video games since 4, and primarily on SNES and PS1/PS2, I never experienced backlogs until the Xbox 360/PS3 generation, more specifically with achievements and gamerscore. When I got an Xbox 360 I developed a tunnel vision mentality, to which, I would convey when I'd play a new game based on my achievement/gamerscore progress. This led to buying new games, and not playing them for months, missing out on the entirety of the PS3 life-cycle, and forming an insurmountable backlog, which convinced me to stop playing Xbox 360 games shortly before Next-Gen started.
Nowadays, I still deal with having a backlog, but it's contained and manageable. I sold my Xbox 360 and bought a PS3 when The Last of US came out, and I'm currently playing alot of games that I missed out on during it's life-cycle (TLOU, Flower, Journey, GoW3, etc) I also have a PS4, with very little games, but I've been able to manage them very well. (Finished Second Son, Resogun, Flower, Contrast, and started Transistor)
But I HEAVILY agree with Colin in the sense that, if you're connected and in-tune with gaming, you have to....key-phrase, "MAKE TIME" for them. Even if it's at a cost! I also completely agree with Tim, in the sense that nostalgia talks to me alot when HD remakes like Jak, R&C, and GoW come around. And with JRPGs being my favorite genre, it gets VERY daunting when remakes like KH1.5/KH2.5, FFX/X2, and Tales of series come out and they require a vast majority of time and investment.
My current backlog: inFAMOUS 1, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, GoW Saga, Kingdom Hearts 2, Ratchet and Clank 2+3, Jak 2+3, DMC Collection, Unfinished Swan (PS4), Transistor, Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, Super Mario 3D World, Xenoblade Chronicles. Once this backlog swindles down I also wanna get Metro Redux.

I had the same problem you had. I've come to realize that I can't complete everything in a game these days. Don't have the time for them. I've lost all desire to get trophies, because they are meaningless. I've stopped trying to collect everything in games because it adds 10 or more hours on top of the game time. I finished Far Cry 3 at 100% completion, I can't do the same for Far Cry 4. I don't have the time for it anymore. It drives me bonkers seeing all the things I can do on the map. All the things I can collect. I guess it's a bit of OCD, But there are different games I want to play.
I may never finish Shadows of Mordor even though it's a great game, but I'm cool with that. I'm slowly becoming that demographic that doesn't complete games, even though I would finish all the games I played 3 years ago. I've even slowed down on console gaming all together because the length of some games. Handhelds are what I'm gravitating to now because I can play them at anytime. I've also started playing more PC games like Diablo because I don't have to take up the TV to play it.
The games I play now often have a 'jump-in, jump-out' convenience to them. 20 Minutes here, 20 minutes there. Way easier for me.
I don't really have a current back-log, although my steam account would say otherwise. The reason for that is 'letting go'. Just realize you missed the train and move on before you realize you're only chasing your tail and getting nowhere.

X82BIGBLUE82X Now-a-days I settle for the main story. As long as I get through that, I'm happy. Some games fall through the cracks, though. Of course I do a bunch of the side stuff, just not everything like I used to. Unless it's a zelda game. To me, there's just not enough side stuff to do. Then there's games like Watch Dogs where all the side stuff is immensely repetitive. Ubisoftism, is what I call it. Pseudo-content.

I'm still going for Platinum trophies, but sometimes you stop having fun with games going after trophies/achievements. Right now I'm playing Diablo 3 and is driving me nuts, the amount of grind is ridiculous, I'm on my 4th playthrough and I don't feel like going into any optional area, but I still end up going in them because of a chance to find gold or better weapon to beat the bosses. What is even worse is that I need to do at least another playthrough on hardcore mode and grind for hours to reach 5.000.000 in gold. :(

I have the exact same problem. I have a huge pile of game that I have played a couple hours but never really finished and now with the new generation of consoles upon us I already have a backlog of games for this new generation let alone the old one. Just to give you an example I still have an unopened copy of Mass Effect 3 still in the plastic from when it was released.

When I first started gaming, I found I loved games, and couldn't get enough of them. I stopped reading books, and watching movies, and any time when I wasn't occupied with sports or homework or friends, time that used to be allowed to Tv or books, went to video games. But after awhile, I got sick of games. I couldn't finish any games, only start them. The longest I gamed for was 20 or 30 minutes, before I'd get bored. Now I'm trying to get back into gaming, but it's become a daunting challenge, where I'm trying to play a game, but then i want to move on to another game, all the while an ever-growing list of video games become bigger. It's not easy to try to keep up with new games, while trying to finish games you already own. Another problem is that it's impossible for me to keep up with the games I want to buy, seeing as how I don't have 60 bucks to throw around every couple weeks.

  • @Geeksaregeeky
    @Geeksaregeeky 9 лет назад +1

    IDEA!
I don't know how you would go about this and pull it off, but I notice when Tim was talking about wanting to play games he hasn't experienced yet, I know you guys do Lets Play's with games you know and love, but maybe you guys can pick a game that is in your backlog of newer titles you haven't had the chance to play and use your creating content for KFG to sit and play like an hour of whatever. Sounds ridiculous, but I think it'd not only give these games a chance to be played, but would also be a new segment to do for KFG.
You could even call it something like: The Backlog Happy Hour.
Idk...I know I'm just a viewer, but I remember when you were going full time with KF stuff you all mentioned we could give you guys potential ideas.
I think Tim should play Bioshock's first hour for the 7th time and then do another and another hour until it's beat. Again, sounds ambitious to pull off as an "entertainment segment," but it would be like killing two birds with one stone.

I've never even finished a Zelda game - which is especially strange because I love that series, own most of the entries in it, and it is among the first game series I ever played. I have started "Ocarina" many times throughout my life, and barely scratched the surface,

I relate this to how you guys say you want Colin and Greg Live to be nerd culture's equivalent to a daily sports show. What you have to keep in mind is that guys like Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser aren't watching every sports game start to finish everyday. They have teams of people who watch the games live, cut and edit them into abridged versions or game highlights, and then relay the information and script the show to be delivered to the audience. I commend you guys on bringing us as much games coverage as you do as a 4 man team.
I myself am drowning in a backlog of PS3 games I never got to experience because A) I had so much going on in real life during my college years it was impossible to keep up and B) I was getting so preoccupied trying to get all the trophies and completing my games to 100%. My backlog got so extensive and overwhelming I honestly didn't know where to begin playing again.
I ended up organizing my games by release date order using a nifty app called GameVault and starting going through them in order that way. What's cool is that sometimes I go to the IGN archives and listen to old Podcast Beyond episodes that sync up with the release dates of the games I'm playing. It creates a true time capsule of events that happened a few years back and sorta helps me feel like I'm not so far behind haha.

I kind of like backlogs and at the same time hate them. I like backlogs because it is pure proof that not all video gamers are complete addicts. I tell someone I play video games, they accuse me of being anti-social and an addict, I take my list of 100 *unplayed games*, shove it in their face, and go " Well these are the games I bought with the full intention of playing, but never got around to doing it because I am pre-occupied with a job, bills, and school. SO, what were you saying? " Then again, I also dislike backlogs because it makes me realize that I only end up collecting games and never getting around to playing them, which makes me sad. :C

Currently with a massive backlog due to having severe dry eye issues currently, compounded by other eye issues that have stop my life in its tracks, gaming just one of the casualties. Plenty of Xbox 360 games including Mass Effect 3, Deus Ex and plenty of downloaded titles like Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger. Also big games like GTA 5 I havent even bought yet. Have an Xbox One and haven't played much but WWE 2K15, Forza 5 and Horizon barely touched. Finally just finished Tomb Raider and currently slowly moving through Sleeping Dogs which I'm really enjoying. 1st batch of eye surgery Feb 10th so praying good things around the corner and hopefully less painful gaming! Also would love a WiiU for all the Mario titles but just not in a healthy state to justify purchase.

I dont have a backlog because the older I get the more particular I get about my taste in games. Like Colin, I just write off entire franchies and even genres now (JRPGS, Sports, 1-on-1-Fighters, etc.) and focus only on the games that really interest me. So i've played and finished every game I've ever bought, as long as I enjoyed it enough to finish it. I do have a few games laying around unplayed and unfinished, but they're all because I wasn't really enjoying them and I dont consider them a true backlog.
Also, I just play online multiplayer games now. If the Master Chief Collection worked 100%, it would be the only game I'd ever play, basically.

I have two kinds of backlogs: Games I didn't play when I was younger, and a growing backlog of games now.
Growing up, I had NES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, Wii/360/PS3, and now PS4. So I missed all of SNES. I also didn't play RPGs really until the PS3 generation (aside from Wild Arms, which I love.)
Looking specifically at games I own that I want to play through, I have about 8 or 9 games I want to get through before I will buy anything new this year. I'm near the end of Shadow of Mordor right now, and still have Dragon Age and Watch_Dogs to dive into. This is on top of a bunch of "smaller" titles like First Light, Costume Quest 2, Olli Olli, Stryder and Fez. Needless to say, I think I'll be set probably through March, if not longer.

Louis M i think videogames are a harder genre of entertainment to tackle as opposed to music or movies, for example. most video games require a lot of time to play, time people just don't have. i have a few rpgs i would love to play, but just the 3 or 4 alone i want to play are like 40+ hours of gameplay to beat them and i simply don't have the time. there are other games that take way less time, but in most circumstances you don't have to beat games in order to talk about them. if it's a game you really like and have strong feelings for then sure, beat it and reflect on the experience. but i've seen a few hours of Evil Within gameplay and i already know enough just by watching it's a terrible game.

I have really focused on trying to find a weekend where I can almost non-stop a game so I don't halfway through and then have to put it aside. It is tough though when you are in a relationship to find that time.
You just have to remember that the pain you feel over it means you care and that it's important to you. When you stop feeling that way you will have lost something.

Pro-Tip guys: Say, for example, BioShock. Just start it, and power through it. Sure you'll miss most of the collectables, thus missing out on some side stories. But it's better to beat it and absorb the main story and the game as a whole, than to try and perfect it. Because I've noticed that's why I find games daunting, I try to 100% them and that's an impossibility because of time constraints.

for example this year ive only really played farcry4 bf4 and the waliking dead season 2. hopefully i'll get evolve when it come out ,then hold out for ESO & battlefront at the end of the year.if any of these game are terrible i'll just trade them in and try something new or plug in and old game until some comes out that interests me .

I used to have a crazy large backlog when it came to video games, this was mainly because I didn't really have enough money to buy what I wanted to play. However, since I've gotten the money and had more time to play these games my backlog has really dwindled down.
I have an issue kind of like Colin's though. I got AC: Unity for Christmas, downloaded it, and haven't picked it up since. Assassins Creed has become that series where I'm in it strictly for the story. I love the settings and I think that the developers do a very good job at picking interesting times in history. However, the gameplay for these games just kills me. AC 3 was the worst one, I loved the setting and the story was obviously going to be amazing; but getting through the story was just so difficult for me to do. I had little care for any of the little side missions and finally I just did what I ended up doing for Black Flag as well, I just ran through every story mission without exploring anything. I have to do them immediately, otherwise I end up sitting there after 2-3 hours wondering why I'm still playing this game.
My current gaming backlog is pretty manageable right now, I've managed to keep myself from buying a PS4 so far but I've decided I'm gonna get one once I finish this semester of college. That way I have the time to play through games like The Last of Us, Bloodbourne, Second Son and many others.
Right now I'm playing Dragon Age and just managed to get caught up in Destiny. My only problem with that is that I'm ready to go through the VOG raid but everyones focused on the Crotas End raid now. I guess because of this I've learned that you can't get the full experience of some things unless you catch them at the right time.

    Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 HD Remix (only have played 1.5 a bit, haven't touched 2.5 yet)
Silent Hill HD Collection (only bothered replaying SH2; need to delve into SH 3)
ICO & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection (only bothered replaying Shadow; haven't bothered with ICO yet)
Far Cry 4 (got it the day it came out and barely played it at all)
Demon's Souls (have played through the majority of it and It is the one I'm focusing the most on right now)
Dreamfall Trilogy (almost done with The Longest Journey and then I can jump into the other two)
Divinity: Original Sin (played a bit of it and then I stopped; need to go back to it)
Outlast (played a bit; never finished it)
    Etc
Lots of games I need to beat or replay before the huge breadth of games that are slated for this year begin to come out.

AC3 had AWESOME gameplay. Only people who didn't learn to nail the combat say it's bad. Chain kills into Multi kill animations with every type of weapon, the possibilities are endless.
And it continued into AC4 and Rogue.

All I have are the PS3 and Wii U games I'm currently playing:
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
    Super Mario 3D World
    Red Dead Redemption
    Watch_Dogs
    Assassin's Creed: Revelations
    Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
    Max Payne
    Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
    The Walking Dead: Season Two
    Lego Marvel Super Heroes
And on PC just Portal 2
I've already completed big chunks of these games so I doubt it will take me that long. Once all those PS3 games are done I'm going to get South Park and AC Rogue, then I'll get a PS4.

SHOCKED to hear Colin has not played either Shadow or Mordor or Dragon Age: Inquisition. Both critically acclaimed as two of the top games of 2014 (including IGN's GOTY and PS4 GOTY). Surprised Greg compared SoM to Assassin's Creed when the gameplay is more similar to the Arkham games, which he and Colin both enjoy.

Currently there are lots of games that i would normally or at least when they where announced i thought to myself that i am going to 100% play this game. Now when the time comes around i don't even pick them up. I know looking into the next couple of months with some major releases coming out (namely The Witcher, Bloodborne, The Order) i like the idea of thinking that i will be playing all these games but i know that i will not pick them up and they will be perpetually be in my backlog of games that i want to play but i will never have the time to do so. Because all i do is sit here (like i am currently playing Hearthstone and Minecraft, 2 games that i have played for 100's of hours and i honestly don't enjoy anymore but i don't play anything else.

Well 2013 was a time in which i didn't really play ANY games so i had to replay many games in 2014 and also play most of the huge games that released in 2014, i was lucky that many games got pushed back so i actually had time to catch up on the games that i cared about such as The Last of Us (Which is now one of my fav games that i can think of) GTA 5, Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light, Tomb Raider and what not. the remastered obv helped me but now i just want to play Red Dead Redemption which i for whatever reason haven't played yet. but as soon as i do that i'll be fine i think.

Backlogs are awful. I tried doing mine last year and I realized that what I was doing was stupid. It ends up feeling like work. I'd much rather play new games I'm excited about than slog through old stuff no matter how good it is. It sucks, but it happens.

So the problem I have with games is that some are like, "Too much work, so fuck it," a lot of the time. My friends have been raving about Destiny for months, but I missed out on leveling with everyone and they all play every single night, which I don't want to commit to. Don't get me wrong, I put 120+ hours into Dark Souls 2, but only because I could do it at my own pace. Does Kinda Funny Games run into that problem at all?

my backlog is too much. i used to love jrpgs when i was in high school. ff10, kingdom hearts and all that. however when i got to college, and 360/ps3 era, i said, i absolutely cannot do 80 hr gaming experiences anymore. i became more of a mp guy, 100s of hrs in halo 3, l4d 1, and gears of war 2 and 3, each. a reason i loved mass effect was that it was short, in 30 hrs or less i did everything including dlc. i couldnt get into fallout 3... my friend played it for a 100 hours, he was obsessed. so i said NOPE no no no. so yeah. so much money wasted..

Colin, you should try Alien Isolation, I agree with you about Dead space being the last great survival horror game. And alien isolation is just as good in many aspects, not as "fun" gameplay, but the tension and setting are just as good as Dead space 1.

I missed most of the SNES stuff which upsets me, I need to play those, but more importantly I missed so many PlayStation games, I have never played a Crash game, Spyro (I have played some of enter the dragonfly), Sly, I just played Jak and Daxter for the first time a few months ago, I need to play the others, and I just played the first Ratchet and Clank ass well as a Crack in Time a few months ago, but never any of the others. Also I have never played a Final Fantasy. I have too many cooks to complete.
