She went to my high school and I’m still friends with her on Facebook, she’s living in Kentucky now, has a cute boyfriend and she’s just living a simple life. Her mom and uncle unfortunately passed away pretty recently. But overall she seems to be living a happy, simple life.

You are a TREASURE!!! I was a nurse for children, some of whom struggled, knowing all their lives who they were on the inside. These little children know this long before anyone else has a clue. You knew who you were on the inside, and bless you for having the courage to go forward with this now, because if you had not, you have struggled your entire life, and for what? Never give a second thought to what simple people think. Being a female has its difficulties, because guys can be such jerks. Some of them think that they were born to fight in the enternal battle of the sexes. If they ever stopped fighting, everyone would win. 10 years from now, most of the people you are in high school with will not even be a part of your life, so don't worry about about them. I wanted to wear dresses and wear makeup also, but could not confine with a straight girl in school. Was mocked out, kicked in the groin a couple of times, and never went out with others. So, a Wife, house 3 children and now she is having doubts because with all of the hormones and all of the other procedures, the last is next year in June. She is now having second thoughts as she is still very manly. You are young and the transition, although I am sure that it is an emotional relief, is easier. I really enjoyed what you had to say. She is NOT the "first transgender homecoming queen" - there was a girl in Fresno, California that was crowned Homecoming Queen, who was transgender several years before this girl. Also, she speaks of first identifying as "gay", then identifying as transgender - she's incorrect. A transgender person is that way since birth. Sexual identity and sexual preference/orientation, are two mutually exclusive things. A person KNOWS what they are from a very young age - that's how they're wired - it just takes time to accept who and what you are, and what steps you must take to correct the birth defect, if you will.

And that is a home and family in that home that is a safe harbor to come to when the whole world out there is being ugly again and again. Everybody, no matter who they are, deserves that. But, the reality is that many kids don’t experience that safe harbor at home. And home can be at least as ugly as the big, ugly world can be. No matter what, though, we all have to be good to ourselves. Not beat up on ourselves. Physically or emotionally. And know that those teen years are a roller coaster of emotions, and hormones. And as parents, no matter what our kids are about, they NEED to know they ARE LOVED UNCONDITIONALLY. As parents its on us to make that safe harbor for our kids. And its not the same safe harbor needs for each kid. Some do best with more of this, and less of that.
