  • ⭐️ Farang Vasily Simon (that's me) goes to Isaan, the easternmost large city in Thailand called Ubon Ratchathani in Isaan (Esan, Issan). I explored temples, coffee, food and even got myself into drunk karaoke adventures. There was plenty of meeting locals and experiencing famous Thai hospitality. I performed "The Man Who Sold The World" by David Bowie and Nirvana.
This trip took place in 2019 but it feels as current as ever. I'm back in Thailand now and I can attest to that from experience.

Isan dialect become more like Thai language now. Isan dialect doesn't have academic vocabulary in Science, Law, Medicine, TV, sports, etc. They use central Thai because we're in the same country. Except for isolated islands, I don't think there are countries with one ethnic group.

I appreciate your explanation about the Isaan language (dialect). 🙌
I'm curious if in Laos they have their own modern words for Science, Law, Medicine, TV, sports, etc.

@@xxfreedom Even Isan and Lao have different vocabulary and accent. As for Laos, they have kept up with Thai media (TV, songs, books) for approx. 50 years. Many of them prefer Thai-English dictionary to Lao-English dictionary and like to switch between Thai and Lao language even though we’re separated countries. And like to use Thai script when writing a comment on social media. But when Thai people from other regions try to speak Isan (or Lao), they can’t mimic the accent because they haven’t spent enough time with Isan dialect.

@@xxfreedom Academic vocabulary in Science, history, law, medicine, etc., had been translated to Thai language within these 150 years (Thailand, Cambodia and Laos were already separated countries) for our school/ university curriculum. Our first University was established in 1917 (we're really behind Western countries). For example, entertainment industry = วงการบันเทิง is new vocabulary because Thai TV took place in the mid 50s. People use it every day, so they might not realize that it's actually new vocabulary.

@@xxfreedom Thai people have never claimed to be the original or the majority of Tai-Kradai family language to claim something. We live in the present.

@@xxfreedom And don’t be surprised if you encounter new generation of Isan people who don’t speak Isan.

I've been in Ubon last year. I found this place really nice and cheap. Also you can cross the border to Laos very quickly. People speaks more Lao than Thai, very beautiful ladies there. There I a place called Pattaya noi. Locals come to the place eating and chatting

I wanna travel to this place, so, apart from getting an immigration at Bangkok, how to get here?

There are direct flights from BKK to Ubon. Or you can go by bus. Going on land will take much longer, though.
