Marty, thank you so very much for your instructions. Im a single mum of three, I have a 6 year old an 8 year old and a 13 year old and we have all begun learning guitar. So far so good. We can all keep up and love it when you explain the strumming patterns several times over. Takes us about a week to learn a song together. The family that plays together stays together. Warmest regards Bee

I bought an acoustic guitar and I have electric guitars also, but I wanted go back to basics. Relearn my strumming technique. I've had couple surgeries few years ago. Both my elbows, right hand carpal tunnel and my left thumb tendon injury left me not playing for awhile. I realized the affect it took on my muscle memory. I've seen your channel few times. Thanks for the inspiration to play again.

You explain it nice and simple. Really like the way you do the strumming pattern it's really helpful when you say it slowly. Always looking for your lessons, they are the best.

I know there's different ways of doing each chord but I really like this way of doing a G Major. I fractured my ring finger a few years ago and it just doesn't have the same flexibility of my other fingers. I "can" do a G Major with my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers but it is SO hard to get that ring finger to bend to the right shape. Playing it with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fingers is pretty easy but hard to transition to other chords. This version might work better for me, though, and I can't wait to get home to try it out. Thanks!

A few tips for guitarists that want to learn to sing and play at the same time.
I've always enjoyed "singing" - aka singing random notes without actually listening to how they sounded. But it wasn't until I got a vocal coach that I realized how bad I was.
Practice singing the melody notes on top of each individual chord.
The main struggle I had once I was able to sing the notes in the major scale, was being able to hear how the melody notes sounded on top of a chord being strum. I would sing off pitch when I tried to play and sing at the same time.
To remedy this, I would write down on tab paper the melody by figuring out the melody notes and where to play them on the guitar neck. Then I would practice strumming a chord, then singing the lyrics that matched that chord, making sure to hit the pitches I tabbed out.
This can be tricky if you haven't done this. I had a vocal coach who sometimes gave me the tab, but most times I looked up the sheet music, then translated the sheet music into tab (that's good practice in and of itself). Since I have been practising the major scale in all keys up and down the neck, and I taught myself how to read standard notation, figuring out melodies and playing them on the neck was something I could figure out. Took a bit of practice, but I figured it out. After a bunch of practice, I can now sing a note, hold it, then figure out where on the fretboard it sounds best.
Knowing a bit of music theory helps here when you need to switch keys of a song to match your vocal range. A vocal coach can help here, but this is one reason why you might want to learn some theory, so you can eventually do this on your own, when you aren't with your vocal coach.
Another hurdle I had was that I wasn't really hearing how the notes I was singing on top of the chords sounded in combination. I think this is normal for people who have never trained to hear their own voice outside of their own bodies. I was guilty of thinking I knew what I sounded like, but wasn't really listening. I wasn't until I recorded myself singing, getting a vocal coach, and a lot of practice, until I could heard how I was sounding in combination with the music. It's like being a 3rd party observer to your own singing, and it only comes with practice, at least for me.
When It comes to the mechanics of singing and playing at the same time, my advice is practice each separately. Learn the melody, and learn to sing it. Learn how to play all the chord. Practice singing melody notes on top of each chord, and make sure you hear if you are sharp or flat. And finally, practice combining all those together. Recording yourself is a good way to track progress.
I've been learning guitar for the last 3 years (started at the age of 40), and I've taken about 10 months of vocal lessons. Vocal lessons have helped a lot with my guitar playing, since I had to really learn the fretboard to map out melodies where they sound best, and to practice listening to vocal lines, and figuring the out on the neck, and had to know how to read basic standard notation, and learn a bit of music theory.
    And I'm having a blast.
