      Chippah he's honestly my favorite bassist from metallica. he was definitely less skilled than cliff and Robert but he just had that sense of really loving the music that he played and that's something I feel cliff and Robert just can't recreate with thier playing.

      Jason was Metallica''s tightest bassist, hand's down. People can make fun of him for not being a shredder, but the dude held the rhythm better than Rob or Cliff. Listen to the AJFA isolated tracks. He's fucking spot on.
      He, along with Eddie Jackson and Mike Starr, are my favorite bassists. They're why I picked up a bass and have been playing for about 5 years now. His playing had the swagger, aggression, and power Metallica needed. And his backing vocals need no mentioning.

    Jason is definitely not the best bassist around, but damn he is good.

      Creepy Lil' Llama I agree he may not be ya know musically skilled like cliff and rob but he was the energy for Metallica and to be honest I feel like he was the force that kept them going with the backing vocals and amazing stage presence so yea Jason is one of a kind musician

    • @chsims7032
      @chsims7032 7 лет назад +13

      I have to say Jason is better than Rob, only for the simple fact that in the studio, Cliff , Jason and Rob a great. The studio is a controlled atmosphere where everything is perfected with take after take and then editing to how it should be.
      But where Jason is better than Rob is the live shows. No one goes to a live show expecting to hear perfection or hope that the songs sound like original recordings, where Jason surpasses Rob is with his stage presence, energy, and backing vocals. Guy had one hell of a voice. Almost like he was possessed in a way. Jason WAS Metallica. I can't imagine being able to play in my favorite band like he did and bring that energy and enthusiasm as a new-comer/emotional punching bag the way he did. Most guys probably would have quit being in his position, but that wasn't Jasons style until finally it became out of hand and he literally had no free will to do anything on the side.

    i think Jason is a damn good bass player all people want to do is rag on him any one who has seen him play live were they cannot layer him out he is playing drums on bass which is what Lars should have been playing his speed pick style and solid palm muting made Lars drums tighter and James guitar sound heavier which made a tighter sound all round and also he was the best back vocalist they have ever had and blended with James voice so well until it sleeps is a great track were Jason sings along through most of the whole song except the clean call and response parts i like cliff to and most people say that cliff was a sloppy player and from what i have heard on the isolated tracks he was but they were known for there drinking too i am surprised they could even play at all i think Jason was the cleanest tightest play of all of them including Rob i like the chug cliff gave them and the tightness Jason gave them the biggest mistake i think they ever made was not firing Bob rock after the black album came out and i would have never let him play bass on st anger i really do feel like he is responsible for a lot things that they have done that brought them so much hate i really do not like Bob Rock they were doing fine before him and got a lot of hate after the black album they should have kicked his ass to the curb

    Jason was a great fit as well. You cant deny they kicked ass with him. Metallica has really been blessed with some fantastic bassists over the years.

    Jason was good.but he even said himself he was never a true bass player. Before he got the gig with Metallica he was a guitar player. He basically played guitar on bass. Trujillo is more of a real " bass" player. But I still and will always like Jason more. Those solos were fun.

      I think Jason is a ‘real’ bassist. People count cliff as a real bassist and he also played guitar and listed Tony Iommi and Jimi Hendrix as some of his influences

    Man he has an aggressive picking style! You can hear the strings slap the frets with every pick. Must say he's not what I'd call a great soloing bassist but that's not what playing bass is all about. I'd say Cliff was a better bassist but that's no insult as Jason is just badass and his backing vocals are immense. Trujillo is fantastic but doesn't seem to quite fit the band as well. Feel free to disagree

    You say that he plays harder and faster than cliff. No big surprise since. Jason uses a pick and. Cliff fingers..... it takes more skill to play with fingers than pick

    • @brazillianmordekaiser9861
      @brazillianmordekaiser9861 10 лет назад +4

      it's an entirely different skill-set man. Picked and fingered bass are almost different instruments... it's kinda hard to say one really takes more skill than the other. As a slap/funk/metal bassist of 15 years exp my hat is off to a lot of pick players... just not so much Newstead in this era har har

      He's like Toki Wartoof though: Just happy to be in his shoes. I'd have taken the gig too and I'm probably not all that much better than he was. Lucky Jason played in Metallica. Poor Jason got hazed by Metallica..
