I just received Dr. A's Specialty Cut Flowers book and the Perennial book. And he wrote very nice messages in both. Such a nice man. I flipped through both books quickly and can't wait to dive in. Winter reading!! You weren't kidding when you said they are packed with information! Holy cow!
It's called an unction. I get them all the time and I chalk it up to God because I just wake up and have this deep idea and I know what it feels like. It's why I am doing cut flowers, all of the sudden and prior to this I felt I had a black thumb and I killed everything. but thanks to Laura and Aaron and their channel, I learned a great deal and I jumped on board. I'm doing containers for the first few years to ensure I know what I am doing. Like you I live on a small hill that can get windy and a little crazy. My Guinee, George gets upset and immediately jump up on the roof of my car for comfort.
I know this is an older video but mannnn i hope you watch these back! Your a RIGHT NOW person. I found out thats me too! 😂 its really hard to sell aomeone on things like that because aometimes its only MY passion. But man, its such a passionate energy thing!
"Do you guys ever feel so strongly about something? Like you think of something and then you're like YES! Let's do it!" Yes, yes, yes! I feel that way about cut flower farming. Been landscaping for others and planting up my own yard just for fun for years now. As I sit here and look at 40 empty acres. I found your channel, and I'm going for it! I already have a jump start! I already have the land, the tractor, and a jump on tubers, bulbs, fillers. I feel like I am already almost there. I'm going to see what I can do with what I have in my landscape this year. Then next year, we're going for it 100%! Garden Answer made it look fun. YOU made it look possible!!
Gooseneck loosestrife is amazing! We planted one 4" pot three years ago and now it's a 6' SIX FOOT patch against the northeast wall of our house. So elegant in arrangements, long vase life, absolutely love it!
I can absolutely relate to that sense of urgency when you have an idea and I’m pretty sure it drives my parter nuts.... As a beginning flower farmer, I’m really thankful for your videos!!
Nicole, love your hair and whatever you have on your eyes makes em pop Looking good girl 🥰 Can't wait to see what you do for hydrangeas. Those are quickly becoming my passion.
This is very exciting! I am also nervous about the availability of plant stuff. Already ordered some seeds. You will love Columbines, they are short lived perennial tho.
I've have a patch of Gooseneck in my garden along our street for years and we love it, and people who walk by also enjoy it! I think it will be a popular choice for your cut flower selection, some people call it "Geese go walking ".... so charming!
I plan on giving them their own 100 foot stretch of a bed- my neighbor mows around her patch weekly to keep it from spreading- How long are you able to keep it in a vase? It's highly touted as a great cut!
Hi! Loosestrife spreads by runners , best to plant it contained somewhere ....I have it below the windows of a side entrance garage , and it fills that whole space between the garage and the cement walkway .....I and the pollinators LOVE it , but can be a bear to keep in check ....
I invested heavily in perennial seeds and plants from the beginning . I also bought lots of flowering shrubs that can be used for bouquets. Next year I’m going to add evergreens I can cut from too. Can’t wait to watch your flower farm expand and prosper. Thanks
I can't wait either. It's driving me crazy because I have my eye on some Kordes and David Austin roses and I want them in the ground now! I agree with you about the seed shortage. I'm seeing that too and put in my first seed order today. Other varieties that I want are already out of stock so I'm waiting and hoping that they just haven't been through the testing trials yet.
I just recently found you and you aren’t far away! I have Aguilera and Hellebore in full sun and they do fine. My Hellebore spreads like crazy and am always looking to share.
Ugh mine FRIED in full sun! I'm tucking them into my treeline which gets morning sun and then is nicely shaded in the afternoon. I hope they like it there!
Omg I've never known anyone else to be like me, until you. I feel like Im watching myself! 14min mark you got a vision. I get those daily, my Chris Hemsworth hates the camera too but loves to be involved with the farm. He's exhausted with my honey do list.. I've watched all of your videos, I live in a little town of 11,000 people, called Summerland, British Columbia. I have a big flower farm too
Sooooo exciting !!!!!!!! I love all those perennials you ordered 🥰🥰 especially the Phlox and definitely yes to the Hydrangeas!!!!!! These are my favorite 😍 I planted 15 more of them this year I possibly could have a problem ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
I never thought about columbine as cut flower. Echinacea is my favourite. Thinking about adding some rudbeckia, love the new varieties with darker flowers.
Yaaaaay! I'm sooooo glad you did this video! I'm excited to see I ordered some things you did! (B/c I'm completely new to this) But I would love if you did a video on everything you're growing next year... because I'm binging your old videos, & every time I watch a video I'm like "Oh you grow that too?!?" Hahaha! I just discovered goatsbeard/astilbe this year after seeing it on Instagram. It was a pink variety that is green until it blooms, & it looks like it just GLITTERS! They didn't know the variety but I think I found it or something similar (called younique silvery pink astilbe) I hope! 🤞 I ordered green twister seeds from bakercreek! I am just starting small this first year to see if I'm even able to sell anything! & if it goes well, I'll invest a lot more next year... (I'll also get a business license & buy wholesale!) I bought tons of seeds, & then I purchased 10 peonies, 6 dahlias, 3 roses, 1 hydrangea, 100 ranunculus, & 50 tulips, & 1 astilbe. ⬅️ Makes me think of the Christmas song! Haha! *I say so too much in my videos too! & I'm the same way when it comes to some things.... some things I want to plan (usually when it comes to anything I have to PURCHASE, I'm like "well what if _" or "what if _" I think I overanalyze because I was raised very poor... ) but when it comes to other things, like going on a little weekend getaway, or doing something, I'm like I wanna do it NOW!
There's SO much! I will do more videos as I'm planting and seeding things this winter/spring- I can't wait! There are so many options- I am going to see what does really well of this group and then hopefully order more!
I got the green twister seeds. Germinated great! I heard that you guys would be having a very cold snowy winter this year so hopefully that will replenish your water supply. Take care!
I swear you are my long lost sister... Lets Do This! Me too 😜 I just bought both deer resistant & regular wildflower mix & going to plant them both 😂😂 together.
Yes I'm like that I like to do things right now. In fact you are the reason I too Lisa Mason ziglers course. I was thinking I want to be a flower farmer. I could imagine the flowers in my field. I kept thinking how I was going to even get started. I was watching you and it was like you were talking to me and you said take the course. So I am still have very little in ground but I'm working on it. Not even sure what to plant. Sorry that was long thank you.
I have this book! The descriptions are so charming. I love how he inserts his voice into the text. This book cracks me up. Read it, you'll see what I mean. Lol
OMG Nicole, that vase arrangement works in perfectly with your picture! I was wondering what was on the wall behind you and then I realised the vase and picture were two separate things. Love it!
Haha I was only 30 secs into your video when I made that comment so hadn’t got to your acknowledgment of it. Haha Thanks for letting us know what’s in it!
Other good sources for perennials - Pioneer Gardens, Walters Gardens, and Spring Meadow Nursery (for woodies). Plus there are several good ones you can easily grow from seed: Achillea, Echinops, Knautia, Asclepias, Rudbeckia (if you'd don't get aster yellows) to name a few. Oh and get some thornless raspberry for foliage - Joan J is a good variety.
@@FlowerHillFarm Check out the Kodiak Orange Diervilla. My florists are crazy for it. I think I've done three big purchases from them over the years. Probably the ninebarks are the biggest sellers overall.
You are correct that deer love phlox - the deer wait until there are blooms and they eat the blooms like dessert! Zone 5 SE WI. This year I used “bird netting” and it did keep my phlox safe!💜 Love your videos!
I understand your sentiments. It is frustrating when you have something in mind and you want to do it right then and there. But you can't ,it makes me overthink.and it drives me crazy.. I got lots of plan but I am not able to do it right away cause it needs some funding and it is what I am kinda tight right now. But if I got something in mind that I want to do and I got everything I need. Im sure ill be done by sundown lol. You Gotta do that hydrangea. I think it will be awesome
Hey just a thought for your wildflower patch...... plant the flowers that the deer like to eats our rounded on all sides by a wide border of the ones that they don’t like. Maybe they won’t venture in that far I’d they don’t like the taste of the ones on the outside???? Maybe?
I’m so glad you uploaded I needed a little break from reality today! Your perennial order looks awesome and I can’t wait to see your vision come to life next year. Could you plant half your wild flower garden with the regular wild flower seed and the other half with the deer resistant variety. I think keeping those seeds wet in the first 2 weeks so they germinate is going to be the most important part of having it be big and gorgeous like you want.
I totally agree- water is going to be the game changer for the wildflowers. I'm probably going to sprinkle BOTH on for saturation. Plus something to keep the deer away- I've been looking into some solar powered electric fencing!
Oh! Also - I've heard that in Wildflower fields that sometimes it works if you plant the ones the deer like in the center, then surround them with the yucky ones (yucky ones - AS IF!) then sometimes, if the wind blows just right, and if you plant during a full moon, and then stand on you right foot for 3 days straight - THEN there's a CHANCE the deer won't eat them! maybe, just maybe...
About instant decisions... I’m the same way. It’s funny, because I’m also a planner (weird but true). I’ll make a million plans to dream of the what-ifs but I know they’re all dreams - and I know the difference between that and the idea I’m going to act on. Right away, with no deliberation :)
Emma- same! I’m also a planner in a way but very fast. When I was in television production I had to plan broadcasts all day so I needed to be super organized but it also made me REALLY good at making FAST decisions and not looking back 💐🥰
I have troubles waiting also!!!! and i do get clear visions sometimes AND it has always paid off!! I am so worried about seeds too my go to's say they may not have stock in January...eeek
When you're broadcasting your wildflower seed a couple of sources recommend mixing it with sand 4 to 1 so that it covers the area more evenly and leaves room for the plants to establish.
Hey Nicole! I love your idea about the Hydrangeas! I am interested in seeing your journey with them if you do decide going with them😊 Best wishes from California
Deer like hydrangea...😨😢😢 I’d had enough of never seeing my limelight bloom for 4 years. So, I dusted and sprayed repellent AND instructed my ever faithful Aussie to keep the deer away. Yep, I had to leave her out at night! But, oh did I ever enjoy the blooms! Still, am! Many blessings and well wishes on your forever passion. 😉 I’ve had the same one for many years! Happy tending, nurturing, creating, experimenting and taking in all the beauty that’s abounds. ❤️
Next year I'm starting my flowerfarm, and what I am going to do is to store all the rainwater that is comming of the roof. There are some books by Brad Lancaster who wrote all about rainwater harvesting. I know there are some states that don't allow rainwater harvesting. I hope you're not in one of them. I love the perrenials by the way!
I'm with ya girl on "Pass me the shovel let's do this now" thing! Not a planner more a fly by the seat of my pants kinda girl! Can't wait to see what you do with the Hydrangea field... Mine are cut and dried in Christmas decor and urns right now! Will you be creating any holiday arrangements like the one you received from Sunflower Steve?
Me too! LET'S DO IT NOWWWW!!! Which drives half my family crazy! (THEY like to plan, and plan, and wait, and plan some more! Ackkk! I'm surrounded by planners!!!!) Meanwhile, my garden is already growing & they are STILL planning! I think it's the artist in us. We're just not afraid, and we know what we want. Throw those wildflower seeds and soon you'll see the picture in my head! It's soooo much better than a painting... And hey - who DOESN'T like the spikey flowers? Anyone? I can't get enough of them! So good to see you today Nicole, Thanks for sharing♥️
Definitely flying by the seat of my pants! I will check out what I have to forage this year but not to the level of Sunflower Steve. He's definitely a mentor for me.
I'm with you Nicole! If I have an idea. I do it! Why wait We aren't guaranteed tomorrow. Fortunately, I have a Brad Pitt too who goes along with it. If I think he might mention the amount of $$ spent. I share that my flower friend Nicole bought so much!!! Haha
Oh my God LOL I am the same way if I have an idea we like need to jump on it right that second. But my insanity is a good thing because now we have a pretty solid honey business because I decided I wanted bees one year started with three now we have 100. I'm on the same track with flowers hahaha. I certainly identify with that strong urge to do something and just going with it
Yes, we should talk websites, rather would love to hear you talk about yours. ;) Don't be deterred by comments against the gooseneck loosestrife. It also has a beautiful foliage color in the fall. Be sure it has boundaries; a plastic edge or something. I can never keep astilbe wet enough, site yours with that in mind. Go for hydrangea (primarily paniculata or arborescens hybrids and cultivars-- don't cry over the macrophyllas!).
I'm planning on moving next winter and I've been buying seeds super early because I see so many things being sold out far earlier than typical (and some varieties not showing up at all). Random things you wouldn't expect to be sold out are as well🤷. Safe not sorry is how I'm approaching my life over the next 24months as I transition into a new home, garden and business.🤷
You have strong intuition like I do. I feel like I we are sisters separated at birth or something. LOL 🤣 My scale of flower farming is much smaller than yours though. Love you enthusiasm and spirit.
Nicole! Did you get your hair done? Looks lovely! So onto flower things: What type of hydrangea are you thinking of planting in your field? Regarding just having a feeling about something-I bet a lot of us feel that way, when the stay at home order first started back in March our travel plans to France were thwarted (so sad, I know) but instead I had rented an excavator to create a sunken garden, (because if I can't eat macaroons while staring at the Eiffel tower, obviously renting an excavator is the next best thing?) So a lot of time an effort was put into it, and then ultimately I decided that I want to pursue flower farming, and not landscaping, so for the past two months I have been talking about moving the plants and filling it in, because that area is ideal for more cut flower space. No one agreed with me and everyone else loved the sunken garden, but the thing is, I wasn't in love with it. So I woke up one day, and told the naysayers that it was getting filled in, and it was going to be a flower field, and that was that. It was a decision that I did think about (since I often do make impulsive decisions, but mostly when it comes to plant shopping, who can say no?), but ultimately it just had to be done, because it just felt right, and since I started filling it in, I feel a sense of calm that I am headed in the right direction. Power to you and your hydrangea field! Growing flowers is definitely a type of magic, and it can't really be described, but I do think it is just a feeling like you say. Happy planting! (didn't realize this comment would be a novel)
Emily! I did get my hair done- Thank you! First time since March. I usually get blonde highlights but this time we brought my natural color down more in case we have to shutdown again and I don"t get to the salon for months. Good for you for standing your ground! (or filling it in) !
Did I miss which hydrangeas she wants to plant? Take a look at the PW Direct site. They had different sizes and four packs. I need to win some scratchers so that I can take down some pine trees and have more room and sunlight.
Achillea is pronounced like the Greek warrior Achilles, famous for his heroic part in the Trojan War. It’s was written that Achilles used this plant as an herbal remedy for his soldier’s wounds. This is also where we get the name for the phrase ‘Achilles heel’, which in the end, the wound to his heel was what killed the famous Greek warrior. My horticulture professor at The Ohio State University was great at telling these plant nomenclature tales.
@@FlowerHillFarm it both seeds and spreads by rhizomes. When I first had it I controlled it by deadheading pretty sucessfully. Since you will use it as a cut flower that will help. I have 3 patches of it now but am in the process of digging it out of one bed. I need the space to grow other things. Have you ever thought about putting in some snowberry or coralberry bushes? The berries are not available until late summer into fall but they last nicely in a vase and are no fuss to grow.
Did I panic buy? Yep. And I keep doing it. There's things I am worried I won't be able to get and its my first year so I am not sure if its normal for them to be sold out for months at a time and it will show up in January? I hope that's how it works!
I’m cringing over here!! The goats beard, black snakeroot and gooseneck loostrife are going to go CRAZY on you!! They are beautiful for sure but I hope they behave better for you than they did for me. It took me 4 years tof deep digging to get rid of my goose neck!!!
@@FlowerHillFarm they took over my perennial bed and choked out several plants. I had a love/hate relationship with them and finally had to dig them out. I suppose if you have a dedicated spot for them they should be just fine. 😉
I am the same way . When I have an idea i just want to do it right away. Its funny because my husband is the total opposite of me. He has to take his time. It drives me crazy. When I do finish my idea in my head my husband ends up thanking me in the end. But keep doing what u do u obviously have alot of talent and drive and your instincts are probably right
Concerning your deer 🦌 issues, have you considered an electric fence? I watch another RUclipsr, Living traditions homestead and they have it around all of their gardens and orchard. Good luck.
We are running a string of electric around the garden fence- and are thinking about electric for the future hydrangea field - solar! I’ll have to check out their video on the matter.
I don't agree with the invasive species comment! Beautiful plants that perform well are tempting, maybe select a sterile cultivar if possible? Loosestrife may not be a huge issue, but just because plants aren't on the "banned" list doesn't mean it won't potentially degrade surrounding habitats.
Hydrangeas are just beautiful...lots to pick from...check out the Proven Winners web site....I am 5b and we have a spring & had to get a well dug also because of the drought...nice selection of plants that you picked...TFS
Your welcome...hope the list goes quickly for your well...Columbine are very hardy in our zone and are beautiful in the spring...Good luck with all you are doing...love fresh flower.
Gooseneck loosestrife is so elegant. Watching your vids always make me laugh, learn and get excited for the coming year.

I always enjoy your videos! I'm with you. When I have an idea I want to do it right then!! There is no waiting...
Right on!
Hi flower friend! I'd go all in the the hydrangea field!! I did that this year.🙈 And I just planted 1700 peonies. It's my field of dreams!!
Oh my!
Let's do this! Sounds like my kind of plan!
I’m waiting to hear back from Spring Meadow - planning an order there this spring too
@@FlowerHillFarm Check out the Kodiak Orange Diervilla. My florists are crazy for it. I think I've done three big purchases from them over the years. Probably the ninebarks are the biggest sellers overall.
I can totally relate but must plan it out! haha if that makes sense! Love the idea of the Hydrangea field!
Yup, you’re in good company!
You are correct that deer love phlox - the deer wait until there are blooms and they eat the blooms like dessert!
Zone 5 SE WI. This year I used “bird netting” and it did keep my phlox safe!💜 Love your videos!
UGH! Inside the fence for real!
Most of the time I’m like you Nicole. I like to get stuff done. ☺️😉🙃😆
Love that!
Maybe?
Good idea!
Hydrangeas are wonderful (I have a bunch - we have a very large landscaped yard) but they do require additional water when it’s dry. 🥰🌸😌
Good to know! Thanks Peggy
@@FlowerHillFarm nice!
I'm liking this solar idea! ♡
Oh! Also -
I've heard that in Wildflower fields that sometimes it works if you plant the ones the deer like in the center, then surround them with the yucky ones (yucky ones - AS IF!) then sometimes, if the wind blows just right, and if you plant during a full moon, and then stand on you right foot for 3 days straight - THEN there's a CHANCE the deer won't eat them!
maybe, just maybe...
You and me both!
When you're broadcasting your wildflower seed a couple of sources recommend mixing it with sand 4 to 1 so that it covers the area more evenly and leaves room for the plants to establish.
I actually just heard that last week - I’ll definitely try that because my seed sprayer did NOT work well.
Hey Nicole!
I love your idea about the Hydrangeas! I am interested in seeing your journey with them if you do decide going with them😊 Best wishes from California
Definitely!! Thanks!
I’m ordering more seeds earlier myself. I agree there will probably be shortages.
It's scary! I usually order in January!
*hand raised!* I do not like to wait - I am out there with a shovel the same day!
Yasssss Tara!
Deer like hydrangea...😨😢😢
I’d had enough of never seeing my limelight bloom for 4 years.
Ugh! Deer 🦌 good solution!
Love the background
Thanks!
That’s what I did this year. It used to be illegal here in New York but laws have changed and it is allowed now!
Get feelings, can't wait, give me the credit card and shovel!! 😁 You are my spirit gardener. 👍🏻
Yes! LOL
you are so knowlegable love your videos
Thank you, Vivian!
Ackkk!
I'm surrounded by planners!!!!)
Meanwhile, my garden is already growing & they are STILL planning!
I think it's the artist in us.
We're just not afraid,
and we know what we want.
Haha
Use me as an excuse ANYTIME! LOL
Thank you I need it a distraction today.
Any time!
I’m so excited about that gooseneck! I was watching a seminar today on hydrangea and I can not wait to get that project started 💐🥰
@@FlowerHillFarm Northlawn is a very big fan of hydrangeas for cuts, has all the good ones. (If you can get past her tremolo voice.)
Best of luck to you
That sounds like a great plan Sheryl!
Research 3D deer fences. That's what I use on my farm - works wonders, and is relatively inexpensive.
Thanks Doug!
One question. When do you put up the flower netting up on your gladiolus? My garden isn’t very big but all my gladiolus are abut 6 to 7 inches tall.
You have strong intuition like I do. I feel like I we are sisters separated at birth or something. LOL 🤣 My scale of flower farming is much smaller than yours though. Love you enthusiasm and spirit.
We might just be! Thank you!
I’m a let’s just do it now person too 🤩
Yes!
Can you share how you will be planting each of your perennials? Where? How? Thank you
That's the plan for spring! I need to map it all out-
Oh yeah, I am not a planner!!! If I want something, it's done like asap. Lmao, I believe it's an issue related to my adhd! 🤣💗👍
Did I miss which hydrangeas she wants to plant? Take a look at the PW Direct site. They had different sizes and four packs. I need to win some scratchers so that I can take down some pine trees and have more room and sunlight.
I haven’t figured out which yet. Need to research for my zone. I’ll check out PW!
That’s awesome! Thank you!
Can you please do a video on websites?? That would be awesome!
I should! I'm not a pro but I've done it a few times-- I'll do a tutorial when I update-
Yes, please!!
Nicole deer love hydranga
Gooseneck loosestrife will grow and bloom anywhere.
That’s what I hear! My neighbor is able to control her spread by mowing
Trigger finger itchy and ready to go for those CSA shares!!! Is it midnight Thanksgiving its going live!?!? Asking for a me!
I was thinking about NOON---- I'm not sure yet!! I need to plan it out this week.
Where did you get your sweater? Sorry I could not resist to ask because you look great !
Thank you! I actually got it a couple years ago at Kohl’s
Do the hydrangeas! I love mine!
My order has been placed! I am embarrassed to say how many. What did you plant?
@@FlowerHillFarm I have 1 Pinky Winky, 1 QuickFire, 1 Little QuickFire, 2 Firelight, 2 Limelight, 3 Bobo, 2 Vanilla Strawberry, 2 Strawberry Sundae, 1 Incrediball, and 2 Little Limes.
Lovely!
@@FlowerHillFarm If you want to see the hydrangeas, go to The Campbell Garden on Facebook.
Did I panic buy? Yep. And I keep doing it. There's things I am worried I won't be able to get and its my first year so I am not sure if its normal for them to be sold out for months at a time and it will show up in January? I hope that's how it works!
I missed you Lyla! Your comments always crack me up-
I’m cringing over here!! The goats beard, black snakeroot and gooseneck loostrife are going to go CRAZY on you!! They are beautiful for sure but I hope they behave better for you than they did for me. It took me 4 years tof deep digging to get rid of my goose neck!!!
I hope so! My neighbor has no issues mowing around her patch.
But keep doing what u do u obviously have alot of talent and drive and your instincts are probably right
Ha- Brad always rolls his eyes at me but he is more like me than he thinks- Always keeping busy!
Gooseneck Loosestrife highly invasive you’ll never have to plant them again.
Found that out the hard way. They are hard very hard to get rid of.
That's the plan!
So in 2020 we had no rain and now in 2021 we can't get it to stop!
Seriously!
I don't agree with the invasive species comment! Beautiful plants that perform well are tempting, maybe select a sterile cultivar if possible? Loosestrife may not be a huge issue, but just because plants aren't on the "banned" list doesn't mean it won't potentially degrade surrounding habitats.
Good point Sam!
Hydrangeas are just beautiful...lots to pick from...check out the Proven Winners web site....I am 5b and we have a spring & had to get a well dug also because of the drought...nice selection of plants that you picked...TFS
Thank you Kathy- we are on the list to have our well drilled deeper but it's a long list! I need to head over to PW!
Your welcome...hope the list goes quickly for your well...Columbine are very hardy in our zone and are beautiful in the spring...Good luck with all you are doing...love fresh flower.
I've looked into ordering from ednie... is the price listed per seed/bulb? Or for 25 of that variety?
Price is per bulb with a minimum of 25.
