  • Video description: There are guided weapons and are a threat to low-flying aircraft, especially helicopters. Guess what it is? Yes we’re talking about the man-portable air defence system or in short MANPADS. They are surface-to-air missiles that can be fired by an individual or a small team of people against aircraft. These missiles, affordable and widely available through a variety of sources, have been used successfully over the past three decades both in military conflicts, as well as by terrorist organizations. They have received a great deal of attention especially in the ongoing Russian Ukraine war. This video presents the top 8 MANPADS in the world today.
    Enjoy watching. Cheers!

    Probably the best one is right now a PIORUN, sucessor of GROM.
    You can compare a lot of data, but PIORUN has super advance IR guidance system - it recognizing several infrared sources and hitting right one, insted of f.ex. flares.
    Other ones might be faster or better flight attlitude but PIORUN has best probability of kill what is the most important. It is also very easy to use, its light and portable. This is why US ordered them to refill the gap after Stingers.

      More so than capabilities what about the soft aspects of the launcher system. How finicky are the missiles to handle? How long does the sensor coolant last when used to cool the sensors on the warhead? What is the shelf life of the coolant? How easy is it to transport? How delicate is the system? How quickly can a operator be trained on the unit? How quickly can the weapon be brought to bear once an aerial threat is detected? How long does the weapon take to set up? How long does it take to pack the system up for transport after firing? How long does it take to acquire a target?
      These "small" details can have an extremely large impact of how successful this system is if not more so than the capabilites of it's warhead and sensors. That said, it must be a pretty good system for the US to order them. But do keep in mind the "soft" factors matter every bit as much as the "hard" factors.

    What a poor knowledge! Everyone know that the best in the world actual in use MANPAD is next generation of Grom -> Piorun from Poland. It is better that Stingers and Verba. Even US Army confirmed that fact and they have ordered a huge number of Pioruns from Polish producer Mesko. Ukrainian solders also confirmed that the Piorun MANPAD has the best reliability, effectiveness and accuracy (e.g. very good night using, can hit the targets even flying 10m above the ground, advance multi head missile, protection against enemy using etc.) In near future will be next generation of Piorun MANPADS (upgrade of missile head, better manoeuvrability, bigger range etc.) but Poland probably will not "transfer" all this technology abroad to avoid enemy capture...

      Weirdly Stingers first operational use was in 1982, in the Falklands War. 6 missiles went South with the SAS and wa used to shoot down an Argentine Air Force Pucara and a Puma helicopter. The manuals and single person who had been trained to use it had all been lost in a SeaKing crash. The guy who fired it was pretty much making it up as he went along...he'd never been trained on it...The funniest thing was that he was posted shortly after the war to the US to be trained on Stinger, when the US trainer began to tell the assembled US and UK personnel about the then very new missile and asked them all if they knew anything about it...the SAS guy had to break it to him that he'd already shot something down with it...

      Stinger is fairly old, even the RMP version. Instead of upgrading to the planned Stinger BlkII which used the AIM-9X IR focal plane array, the US military cancelled it and bought Pioruns instead later, which has better specs than Stinger RMP. If this video had included Piorun it likely would have been #1, and it is much newer. The US military did, however, make a ground-to-air AIM-9X version which outranges, outmaneuvers, better CCM, and faster than any manpad made (too large for manpad, of course).

The narration is mediocre and the data is a shambles. You might just come on and say..."Wow, this one is neat" or "Golly, this one is bright and shiny" for as much good as what you presented. There is no data given as to how the systems were ranked....why is the FIM-92 the best....as compared to what ?

  • @olekzajac5948

    Yeah, because comparing essentially two different classes of armament - shoulder-fired MANPADS and stationary MANPADS, makes sense. It's like comparing the BAR with the Browning M1919A6.
    Another thing is that, as always with those "Top X portable AA missiles", the Stinger is on the top for no apparent reason besides being US made I guess. It should look more like this:
    1) Polish PPZR Piorun
    2) Russian 9K333 Verba
    3) American FIM-92F Stinger, Russian 9K338 Igla-S
    5) Polish PPZR Grom
    6) Japanese Type 91
    There are two things that the Stinger kinda struggles with:
    - hit probability - systems like Verba and Piorun are just more likely to hit the target that is performing evasive actions,
    - minimum engagement distance - very important parameter almost always left out from these kind of videos. While for the Stinger it is around 30 meters, for more modern systems such as Verba or Piorun (and even the Igla-S) it is about 10 meters.

    • @PR_nick
      @PR_nick 2 года назад +5

      True. Minimum engagement distance suprised Russian pilots wo knew about Stinger and used low fly tactic. Final effect you can easy find in Ukraine news. PPZR Piorun is usefull agianst cruisse missle and smole drones too.

      Recall seeing that Starstreak does have a single missile shoulder fired version. Assume range is the same but maybe tracking is not as good and operation more difficult in that setup as the turreted versions? Using 3 sub munitions seems pretty different.
      Is much really known about kill rate of the others in practice? Recall reading somewhere that in the past the main result was just their presence pushed planes to fly higher, and potentially be less accurate in bombing., if there wasn't also lots of longer range AA. So range/altitude could be a consideration, although seem largely similar here?

      @olekzajac5948 2 года назад

      @@Dom-fj9ix I'm not saying it's bad, I'm saying it's a different type of weapon system. You can't fire it from the shoulder, while you can do it with the Stinger, Piorun or Verba. That's why it's like comparing a heavy machine gun to an automatic rifle because they're both infantry support weapons.

    • @olekzajac5948
      @olekzajac5948 2 года назад +1

      @@SyncViews OK, I have to give that one to you, there is a shoulder fired version of the Starstreak. But it still is way heavier than any of the "typical" MANPADS systems and, more importantly, it isn't fire and forget - you have to guide the missile to the target like in ATGMs. Granted, that type of missile doesn't give a damn about flares, but it requires a skilled operator (especially when targeting aircraft). You also have to keep in mind that Russian helicopters have laser warning receivers so they can detect that kind of missile. Which is quite a problem vonsidering that the missile isn't of fire and forget type.
      But yes, when used properly and by trained crews, it is absolutely deadly.

    Imager Infrared Guidance (IIR) system The main difference from IR guided is that IR guidance system is focused on heat, emitting direct heat, while IIR Guidance system is focused on the entire target. For example, when an IR-guided missile is launched, it emits a lot of heat, that is, when the engine is turned on, the IIR guidance system locks on the entire flight image of the target, thanks to its imager. In this case, it becomes very difficult to deceive the IIR system compared to the IR guidance system. SUNGUR, with its 8 kilometer range and Imaging Infrared (IIR) Seeker step separation details, is described as the fourth generation MANPADS due to its superior features.

      The planned Stinger BlkII that was cancelled would have been even better, with the same IR focal plane array as the AIM-9X air-to-air missile, while retaining the CCM capability of the UV. Long after it was cancelled, it seems the US military bought the much newer Polish Piorun manpads, which for some reason were not even included here (see other comments).
      As for the Starstreak, it's fastest but is SACLOS, so the operator has to maintain track so the missile can ride the projected laser beam (called a Beam-Rider). Works well for fast aircraft, not so good against cruise missiles. Its fuzes (3 darts) are also contact, not proximity.

    I observe successful attempts of downed Kalibr, X-101, X-555 cruise missiles using Igla-1, Igla in Ukraine. But I don't see any stingers, why? After watching the video instruction about the stinger, I came to the conclusion that there is not enough reaction time, the cruise missile manages to escape before the anti-aircraft gunner manages to shoot. In the Igla MANPADS, the reaction time is 5 seconds, in practice, after 8 seconds, the rocket launches to the target. Although only successful firing of MANPADS at cruise missiles is uploaded to RUclips, and a huge number of unsuccessful attempts remained behind the scenes, there is even a video with a successful defeat of a cruise missile, but on the same video, you can notice unsuccessful attempts before that, i.e. the anti-aircraft gunners were only able to hit the target with the 2nd or 3rd missile.

    Lots of approximations in that video, which is not surprising. The starstreak should not be included, it is a very different system which is barely a manpad (it is rather heavier), has a dual use and is really accurate only if guided by the operator (accuracy decrease significantly in fire and forget mode). The mistral F3 version has a greater range and operational altitude. The Piorun should have been included rather than the Grom. As is often the case, western missile are usually more accurate and are better at avoiding countermeasures than their eastern counterparts.

    The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is - whichever is greater - it obtains a difference or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position that it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is is now the position that it wasn't, and if follows that the position that it was is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation. The variation being the difference between where the missile is and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information that the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it know where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice versa. And by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.
