    The problem with these lists is that they don't compare weights. That's the most crucial comparison. It's like boxing weight categories. You cannot compare a 20kg missile that a man can carry to a 40kg missile that must be mounted on a vehicle or at least a massive tripod operated by 2 men.

    Ridiculous to omit NLAW from this list- due to it's portability and sheer versatility it's a world class system. It's currently malleting Russian MBT's in Ukraine.

    • @jwb1227
      @jwb1227 2 года назад +20

      NLAW is better suited for in-city fighting. In an open battlefield, NLAW is not as good as other portable ATGMs like the Javelin or the Israel's SPIKE because it lacks the longer range of other ATGMs. NLAW is a short-range ATGM and the operator must be closer to the target. It also lags in penetration of armor thickness. NLAW is 500+mm while Javelin is 800+mm.

    • @vonnikon
      @vonnikon 2 года назад +13

    • @jwb1227
      @jwb1227 2 года назад +5

      @@vonnikon - Yes and No is the answer. The "xxxmm" armor stats on tank data are for "guidance only" these days and cannot be relied on if anyone's life is on the line due to increased use of composite armor in addition to RHA which is what all ATGMs are rated at. For Leopard 2A6, "920-940 mm RHAe on the turret, 620 mm RHAe on the glacis and lower front hull on the Leopard 2A6." Now, NLAW was most likely designed for Soviet era tanks which it can easily take out but with increased use of composite armor, you want the most lethality level since you may only get one shot. Do you want only 500+mm penetration or 800+mm penetration for your ATGM? I want the bigger missile that has the longest effective range possible since I want a "stand-off" weapon that I can stay as far away from any tanks I am aiming at.
      My point is that when a person is asked to go into a battle and fire an ATGM at an enemy vehicle, you want the most lethality as possible since you may only get one single shot. Sometimes, the direct attack is the only option and 500mm RHA penetration is not enough. Additionally, tank technology is always being upgraded so you want to start with the most lethality for ATGM design since it may not be "upgraded" until much later.

    • @JonathanHStone
      @JonathanHStone 2 года назад +10

    I am sorry but the MMP is a more advanced anti-tank missile than nearly all of the stuff ranked above it. The narration about it in the video just doesn't do justice to its actual specs. It wasn't solely meant to replace the Milan but the Javelin as well which is in use in the French armed forces. The missile and its guidance system offer three different operating modes:
    - Fire-and-Forget (like the Javelin)
    - Man In The Loop with fibre optic data-link
    - Lock-on after launch (LOAL) for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) and using third party target designation.
    The MMP can literally destroy an invisible target behind a building or a hill and the locked target can be changed while the missile is in flight. It is the first and only 5th-generation anti-tank portable missile in service right now.

      I mean there are far more customers of the Javelin than Akeron buyers as well despite inferior specs. You're not saying much. This list is kind of hard to judge, as a lot of these systems serve a completely different role, or have some unique aspect that makes them better or worse for a given situation. For example, the Spike is notoriously lethal for its ability to fire indirectly, making it impossible for most enemies to fight back--effectively, the Spike is fired diagonally up, in the general direction of the target, and the user can lock on to the target once it reaches altitude. This means that it fired without line of sight, which renders most tanks incapable of targeting the user, even if they can detect where they fired from.
    Also, this list mixes super-long range systems like the PARS-3 and Lahat, with shorter range systems like the BGM-71 and Kornet, when these are just used for different things. In urban combat, a system can be lighter and much shorter ranged, yet be much more effective than a longer ranged system that is heavier and less maneuverable. Of course, in an open area, like a highway through cover, the longer range system is far superior.

    The most dangerous anti tank missile is the Spike due to its intelligent non line of sight loitering capabilities.
    It is so good that US Army tested it on Apaches instead of the Hell fires, which expose the helicopter to SAM and other threats.
    An operator of Spike can fire the missile, watch for enemies from above and then pick a target on the fly. Penetration is not relevant if the enemy is hiding behind cover and you can't lock on it (e.g. as the case with older gen missiles - Javelin/Kornet/etc.).

    • @MostlyPennyCat

      It's the same shape but completely different.
      _completely_
      Designed to destroy massed tanks you could for up to 24 in a volley and they'll figure it out themselves, choose targets, identify the vehicles, choose the weakest parts, hit in sequence, avoid friendlies and self destruct if not safe to hit.
      With a 60km range from a fast jet.
      Mid course correction from any other source too.
      And can just do laser guided is you like.
      They are very scary indeed.
