It's difficult to agree with Needledrop sometimes for real. Do the ratings even mean anything. because according to numbers by him, Trap Lord is better than Legends Never Die and Nobody's Smiling.
there's a difference between the word improvement, and the word enjoyment. Anthony, in the case of J's two first albums, either enjoys "sideline Story" more than "Born Sinner", but still thinks Born Sinner is a improvement over sideline story when it comes, maybe, some of the individual tracks. Or, he's changed his opinion on "Sideline Story" since the review of that album, which could mean he MAYBE he only thinks that album is a 5 now instead of an 6.

Yeah its soooo great. Like that line about dicks and asses and gay loving that totally did NOT need to be said. One of coles lowest lyrical moments period.
I don't know why people find born sinner a boring album. I think this is the best album from a conscious rapper in a long time. He nicely blends old school jazzy beats with an incredibly catchy and smooth flow mixed with a lot of emotional substance. Is an incredible album with all the substance a good classic album should have for in 2013
I see this album more as a love letter to Hip Hop than a religious piece. Sampling from classic hip hop legends on almost every track to rapping about Nas, Pac, Jay-Z, Ye and Kendrick, to the title referencing Biggie. I agree the lyrics are bland but I really love the beats, and the overall atmosphere of the album.

One of my personal favorite hip hop albums ever, just because of the overall message. This album asks if you're going to stay true to yourself or if you'll become someone you're not for the money, such an ultimate question about life. He goes back and forth with it in different songs, dealing with the 7 different deadly sins along the way. It's most apparent in Rich N*ggaz and finally reassures that he will stay true to himself no matter what and not let the fame change him into someone that he isn't in the songs Let Nas Down and Born Sinner. There's a reason J. Cole broke down and cried after he finished this album, he was so proud of this masterpiece he made.
The song Runaway made me buy this album. "She'll never understand what it's like to be a man knowing when you look inside yourself, you see a N*gga." That shit just hit me so hard. It's a painful truth so relatable... to me at least. But I guess Cole ain't for everybody.
J Cole is truly painting a picture in Born Sinner. If you really listen to the whole album its starts off dark but as the album goes on it progresses to happiness. This album is a classic and the best album of 2013. If you think his lyrics are "weak" then you must have been listening to trininad james or something cause his lyrics are amazing on this album. If you think he is boring its probaly because you cant relate to his music (which means you never been through any bad times) but your really missing out on the soon to be best rapper of our generation
J Cole is pretty talented. Lyrically I feel like he is better than Kanye BUT Kanye constantly gets on his beast mode and unloads his mind regardless of the relevance of his statements (most people cant connect with fashion, and name dropping)... While Cole, obviously inslired by Kanyes flow (his Cole World swag) seems to be more marketable to the youth and females. I don't understand why so many hardcore fans of an artist's album rage about Anthony's reviews. he clearly knows a lot about musical composition and has a depth of knowledge in it. Even if you disagree, just listen to another side for once.
theneedledrop honestly I used to think your reviews was wack but once I re watched a couple videos I understand that when you review an album its based off of the love of music, not because this artist is your favorite or he /she makes white music . keep doing what you doing bruh.
It was a alright album. Didn't really inspire me, but knowing what J Cole is capable of (Friday Night Lights, The Warm Up, Sideline Story) I do look forward to hearing what he's going to put out next. Hopefully he's more introspective and aware next time, because I think that's what he does best.
Just my opinion, but Sideline Story was Cole's weakest effort by far in my opinion. I thought this album was much better. Still not as good as Warm Up or FNL.
I still can't comprehend how people regard this as one of the best hip hop albums in the past few years. I didn't understand the hype prior to the album's release and I still don't.
theneedledrop but doesn't every rapper has his own style? I could care less if cole has bangers on his track. he spits some real shit. Listen to LAnd of Snakes, Mo Money, Forbidden Fruit, Niggaz Know and Rich Niggaz. I'm not saying you but a lot of people skim through albums not taking anything in and for some reason make reviews of things that can't explain. If your saying that J cole is boring then your saying guys like Nasty Nas is boring. Lets look at Ilmatic. Tell me one song that had a faster pace then LAnd of Snakes. Just like Nas, Cole takes his time and spits real shit. Boring? you gotta be kidding me. This is your worst review.
"in some ways it is an improvement" is what he said, doesn't mean he necessarily thinks the whole project is better. I'm guessing that what he means...
You do realize that Power Trip has a double meaning. On the surface it seems like a typical single subject matter wise. But like it can be interpreted as a song about his relationship with Hip Hop like the girl he's obsessed with represents Hip Hop. Kinda similar to Lights Please which also can viewed as metaphor as well.
It honestly annoys me when people get mad at him for scoring kendrick way higher than cole. Kendrick is a way better rapper, and has way better projects. Them cole stans are feisty as shit
Kendrick is better than cole but scores like 5 to 6 with cole? Like at least 7 to maybe 8 I'd understand but cole is compared with kendrick even kenny said it himself
@@ntawil6394 "They act like 2 legends cannot coexist". Throughout the last decade Kendrick Cole Drake and even Kanye to a degree have all been the main figures. They are all up there, some better than others but comparisons are fair
This album is a classic. This guy hates on every album J. Cole drops. There are a few rappers that still rap about social issues when they make it to the top. This album stays on repeat. 8/10
The fact that people hate NeedleDrop so much and do nothing but bitch about his review is astounding. Why should anyone take your opinion anymore serious? Especially when you just say "I can relate to it. You're wrong. You don't know hip hop. Hur dur." and he can actually give a valid reason for why he didn't enjoy. I enjoyed the album but I'm also not here being a little bitch because a reviewer didn't enjoy the same thing I did.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. For me, this album was fantastic. The innovative yet comfortable use of samples throughout the album struck me, the intense introduction flows all the way through to the end of the album, and I've read somewhere on reddit that cole mixed in truly yours 3 at the end of the album, which was crazy to me (in a good way). The fact that he dropped 2 small EP's (truly yours 1/2) shortly before born sinner was a very smart move in my opinion and also a great way to introduce the album. Yes of course there are always flaws in the music that any artist decides to release but sometimes that doesn't matter at all. Cole has the *potential* to be one of the greatest of the new era of hip-hop. He's a hard worker and deserves a strong 8.5/10 on born sinner.
Alright, I was a bit Skeptical when he hated on Gambino, but BORN SINNER? No credibility to me. This guy doesn't know what hes talking about. He makes a few good points, but mostly they just lack substance and are him snobbilly looking down on an album and inserting negative and biased criticism. Thats my review of your review.
If I see one more Childish Gambino fan talking about a review he did NEARLY 3 YEARS AGO on another song review, I will lose it. Like I will come down to your house and give you the nicest slap of the year to your face. It's the past, GET over it. It's not like you're gonna stop listening to Childish Gambino after that review because we all know you are gonna continue to ride his wagon, and the more you continue to ride this bandwagon, the less intact you seem both emotionally and whole heartedly. Childish Gambino fans in my opinion of course are the most stubborn people I have ever met and it's like they don't listen to any of the bad things, oh wait I mean CRITICISMS that people like fantano have to say. Yeah he has some good rhymes here and there and SOME decent tracks, but c'mon there is nothing about him that is "game-changing" and we're certainly not going to scream for the next Gambino record now are we. He's not a chart topping artist and I honestly don't think HE'LL EVER BE. This is my blatant opinion of course don't lose you heads. And if you're still with me, don't act like he was out of line when you say things like that because if anything, you Childish Gambino fans are the ones out of line for not opening your mind up more. NOTE This message is not attacking anyone specifically, no this is just a public service announcement, if you will, to all Gambino fans in general. PLEASE take this seriously and I hope you open your mind more. Good Day. And I better not see you on another comment section for a completely unrelated review. That's the final straw. Good Day.... This time for real. SHAGA - DESH!!!!!
lmaoo why ya hating on anthony. i mean i heavily mess with this album and whatever anthony says I'm still gna enjoy the crap out of every track. just be open minded on peoples opinions
I really don't get the "J Cole is boring" thing. What is boring about his music? He is lyrically not as "out there" as some MCs, but in terms of straight lyrics, he's one of the better mainstream MCs. Is it his production? Just because he doesn't have any club banger beats does not mean they are boring. They are slow, beautiful, and thoughtful beats. He is lyrically the best mainstream MC. While K Dot has a better deleviery, lyrically he is not on Coles level.
five! haha unbelievable. you gave asap rocky a 7 (to a light 8) saying that the lyrics wern't good but it doesn't matter because hip-hops doesn't have to be lyrical, and because he chose his own beats well. cole's album is entirely self-produced and the rapping and the beats are of a much higher quality and yet all you do is pick apart the lyrics. where's the consistency there? on pure surfice-level listen-ability alone cole's album is superior, you can just have it on in the background wheras asap is basically abrasive and unlistenable at points
+Joe Navajo LOL No not true..he said that rocky isnt popular that for his lyrics and only for his beats (Which is true..) and coles popular cuz of his lyrics and those are facts so shut up idiot.
boring sinner isn't even close to being as good production wise as Long Live. j. cole has always had a mixed bag of great and shitty production and lyricism. Both can be great, both can be laughably bad. Rocky has basic bars but has great production. And he doesn't take himself seriously, he just has fun. j. cole swears he's a top level lyricist.
J. Cole is a lyrical genius. But in order to see that you have dive in to lyrics. Think. Then digest. Every verse on this album has a meaning. Double even triple at times. Villuminati? Talking about himself as he clearly states that he doesn't usually do it. But the song as a whole is taking a shot at rappers like Wayne and ASAP Rocky who constantly boost themselves. Trust me I've listened to the album over and over since 2013. Is it Illmatic? No. Is it It Was Written? No. But I believe this and Lamar's album are the best to come out in a long long time.
In My Opinion: Born Sinner: Strong 8/10 to a Light 9/10 was an 8/10 Fav Tracks: Villuminati, Land Of The Snakes, Power Trip, Mo Money (Interlude), Trouble, Runaway, She Knows, Rich Niggaz, Forbidden Fruit, Chaining Day, Ain't That Some Shit, Crooked Smile, Let Nas Down, Born Sinner, Miss America, New York Times, Is She Gon Pop This is just me going back to albums that I enjoy that I dissect and find the deeper meaning of them.
The point of the album was the good and bad side of Cole in different themes, for example, LAnd of Snakes (the dark/famous side of Cole) and Power Trip (his light/personal side). If you listen to the album thinking about it, it makes total sense.
He's a fucking critic, what do you guys expect? He picks out the little things because he is reviewing music and every little thing matter. Yes it was a great album, but we aren't looking so deep into it, and we had the mindset it was going to be awesome before we played it.
Looking back at this review, I can understand how some people think J.cole is boring. He makes very mellow hip hop and some people like it and others dont. I like mellow hip hop
Fav Tracks: Runaway, Rich Niggaz, Forbidden Fruit, Chaining Day, Crooked Smile, Let Nas Down, Born Sinner Least fav tracks: Land of the Snakes, She Knows, Aint that some shit Overall: I really want to like this album because the production is great throughout and I think the concept is kinda interesting too but lyrically J Cole is just so ass for most of the first half of the album and it weighs it down heavily, overall i'm giving this a decent 6

I don't understand why so many hardcore fans of an artist's album rage about Anthony's reviews. he clearly knows a lot about musical composition and has a depth of knowledge in it. Even if you disagree, just listen to another side for once.
People just get their panties in a twist ya know.
Because this is the real world where there are a lot of stupid people
theneedledrop honestly I used to think your reviews was wack but once I re watched a couple videos I understand that when you review an album its based off of the love of music, not because this artist is your favorite or he /she makes white music . keep doing what you doing bruh.
U forgot the parts when J Cole was taking about poverty and the struggle of living without great parents.
Yeah ok bruh . This is the album that turned Cole from a up and coming act to one of the best in the game
And any J.Cole fan who has listened to Friday night lights knows that born sinner isn't his best work and he definetley could've done better.
This album deserves a fuckin grammy.
how the fuck did you not like she knows
It was a alright album. Didn't really inspire me, but knowing what J Cole is capable of (Friday Night Lights, The Warm Up, Sideline Story) I do look forward to hearing what he's going to put out next. Hopefully he's more introspective and aware next time, because I think that's what he does best.
Just my opinion, but Sideline Story was Cole's weakest effort by far in my opinion. I thought this album was much better. Still not as good as Warm Up or FNL.
Agree with everything said.
This album is great and I have no idea on why so many people don't appreciate great emcees and songwriters
I still can't comprehend how people regard this as one of the best hip hop albums in the past few years. I didn't understand the hype prior to the album's release and I still don't.
yeah, a lot of the tracks are just boring.
The only song that I really liked was Let Nas Down
Kenyan Ross listen to the lyrics and how deep they are
Born sinner was a fucking Classic. Just listen to rich niggaz
theneedledrop but doesn't every rapper has his own style?
And at the beginning of this review he said this album is better than cole world which gave a 6 but he gave this a 5 cmon now
"in some ways it is an improvement" is what he said, doesn't mean he necessarily thinks the whole project is better. I'm guessing that what he means...
5/10?? Smh
@@amrit-2865 Then Kenny’s wrong. Cole is no where near Kendrick
@@ntawil6394 "They act like 2 legends cannot coexist". Throughout the last decade Kendrick Cole Drake and even Kanye to a degree have all been the main figures. They are all up there, some better than others but comparisons are fair
bro yall so egotistical for no reason probably never even listened to jcole seriously just enjoy music wierdo
possibly my favorite album. I agree not the strongest lyrically, and focus isn't there, but the sound of the entire album is just downright addictive.
This album is a classic. This guy hates on every album J. Cole drops. There are a few rappers that still rap about social issues when they make it to the top. This album stays on repeat. 8/10
Imagine calling this album forgettable
Let nas down is a top 5 Cole song, or top 10, either way it’s a great track
Naw
2:45 clipping for later
The fact that people hate NeedleDrop so much and do nothing but bitch about his review is astounding. Why should anyone take your opinion anymore serious? Especially when you just say "I can relate to it. You're wrong. You don't know hip hop. Hur dur." and he can actually give a valid reason for why he didn't enjoy. I enjoyed the album but I'm also not here being a little bitch because a reviewer didn't enjoy the same thing I did.
weak review, born sinner was easily one of the top hip hop albums through 2013.
Listened to this album in full yesterday for the first time in months, light 4/10.
Strong 4
That why your injured
*That's
DatNiggaDylan Well he's healthy now
Kenyan Ross this aged pretty weirdly 😂
10
Omg... he only put She Knows as his least favorite cuz he knew Beyoncé would get him if he put it in his favorites!!!!!!!
But melon, you can’t give Kendrick a 10/10 on a cole review
Melon: hold my beer
favourite album of all time, but his criticisms here - admittedly are quite accurate
we need more people like you
So glad I found your video reviews. Very well done, well written/spoken. Keep up the good work.
How can you hate a song like Crooked Smile? Seriously. How?
Alright, I was a bit Skeptical when he hated on Gambino, but BORN SINNER? No credibility to me. This guy doesn't know what hes talking about. He makes a few good points, but mostly they just lack substance and are him snobbilly looking down on an album and inserting negative and biased criticism. Thats my review of your review.
Daniel Bauer How is having an opinion being an idiot? Lol
Born Sinner was boring. His mixtapes were some of the greatest of all time but his albums have been corny and boring.
Gator W.F. Where in the OP's post did he call him an idiot?
BAZZZZZINGAAAAA lol butt hurt hater.
You made no good arguments or points at all for the album being mediocre.
I didn't hate any songs on this album
J COLE FREESTYLE + NEW SONG ON MY PLAYLIST..KEEP THE SUPPORT COMING!!
Hurts to admit, but he is right.
lmaoo why ya hating on anthony. i mean i heavily mess with this album and whatever anthony says I'm still gna enjoy the crap out of every track. just be open minded on peoples opinions
HAHAHAHAHAHA Kendrick destroys J.Cole.
I can always tell the tone of the comments, and get an idea of the score he gave the album, just by looking at the like to dislike ratio.
I personally loved this album, one of my favourites of the year so far. But I understand where you're coming from
You're not a true fan of hip hop if you didn't like this album.
dumbest thing i've read all day
five! haha unbelievable. you gave asap rocky a 7 (to a light 8) saying that the lyrics wern't good but it doesn't matter because hip-hops doesn't have to be lyrical, and because he chose his own beats well. cole's album is entirely self-produced and the rapping and the beats are of a much higher quality and yet all you do is pick apart the lyrics. where's the consistency there? on pure surfice-level listen-ability alone cole's album is superior, you can just have it on in the background wheras asap is basically abrasive and unlistenable at points
And he doesn't take himself seriously, he just has fun. j. cole swears he's a top level lyricist.
the beats on lla asap were way better than the beats on boring sinner lmfao. Half of the beats on here put me dead ass to sleep
this nigga takes the lyrics too seriously.
Crooked Smile, Power Trip, Forbidden Fruit, Rich Niggaz and Land Of Snakes are timeless
Unfortunately, J. Cole's mixtapes will be the best material he will ever release. Strong 4 for me.
I believe you're wrong
How so?
J. Cole's not that deep, bro.
Yes. Songs like "Be Free", "Lost Ones", and so much more are so shallow.
+kmouton1456 Those songs try to tackle deep subjects, but they stumble do to Cole's bland, boring lyrics and flows. J. Cole is NyQuil in human form.
How the fuck is this 5/10, this is at least 8/10 and a fair 9/10
We all got our opinions...
9.5 enjoyable as fuck
In My Opinion: Born Sinner: Strong 8/10 to a Light 9/10 was an 8/10
Fav Tracks: Villuminati, Land Of The Snakes, Power Trip, Mo Money (Interlude), Trouble, Runaway, She Knows, Rich Niggaz, Forbidden Fruit, Chaining Day, Ain't That Some Shit, Crooked Smile, Let Nas Down, Born Sinner, Miss America, New York Times, Is She Gon Pop
This is just me going back to albums that I enjoy that I dissect and find the deeper meaning of them.
Bro he gave Lil B a higher score than J.Cole
Lmao
phenomenon15100 lil b is a better artist than J.Cole
if this whole album was the same but kendrick made it instead this would be a 9/10
Hey bro , I really like the reviews that you are putting out..I learn a lot from what you're saying...Much appreciated.
LOVE IT. damn did we listenned to the same album ??
9/10 hands down.
Who knew Anthony was Booling like dat
Looking back at this review, I can understand how some people think J.cole is boring. He makes very mellow hip hop and some people like it and others dont. I like mellow hip hop
You lost me when u said power trip was bad
shut up this album is amazing
FELA KUTI’s instrumental is “let nas down”
J Cole has the worst Fan base, he's so overrated
I'm Here W
Fav Tracks: Runaway, Rich Niggaz, Forbidden Fruit, Chaining Day, Crooked Smile, Let Nas Down, Born Sinner
Least fav tracks: Land of the Snakes, She Knows, Aint that some shit
Overall: I really want to like this album because the production is great throughout and I think the concept is kinda interesting too but lyrically J Cole is just so ass for most of the first half of the album and it weighs it down heavily, overall i'm giving this a decent 6
this my favorite album...
Power trip a bad song???? with no emotion??? read the lyrics breh😭
