Could I please add a question to this topic? If we are using a retinol topically, is it safe to use in the two/three week period of time between conception and a missed period/positive pregnancy test?
For instance, I typically drink a glass of wine per week, but I know that the baby would be completely safe if I were to get pregnant without realizing. Would using retinol only once a week make it safe, or using it at a really low concentration, or a combination of both?
I’m not saying that I would be drinking alcohol or using a retinol while intentionally trying to get pregnant, but realistically speaking women can get pregnant for a very large portion of their life (puberty to menopause). I’ve also had a lot of friends get pregnant while on birth control who didn’t know until they had a missed period.
Does this make any sense? I would really like to start using retinol, but only if it is safe during those first couple weeks of the baby’s life. If it’s not safe, then I would just wait to use it until after menopause. Personally, beautiful/youthful skin would never be worth the risk of giving a baby preventable birth defects.
Thank y’all so so much for the content y’all put out, I truly appreciate it!!!😊

@@rachelmelissa1040 The most dangerous time for a fetus with alcohol intake by the mother is the second trimester. This is when the brain is developing rapidly anatomically. Structures can be massively impaired with heavy intake of alcohol duirng this period leading to actual HOLES ie large amounts of brain tissue is MISSING when the infant is born and can never grow into those spaces. This lowers IQ and can affect several areas of the brain having other bad effects...ie fetal alcohol syndrome. Studies show that the level of drinking from one drink up affects the fetus first mildly, then severely, ie it is dose specific. Fetal alcohol syndrome also affects facial and other anatomical structures ie appearance. Some features include low placed ears ie the top of the ear sits below the eyebrow level; webbing between fingers and toes similar to a ducks webbing...and five other signs of damage. Other things can cause these anamolies, but more than three or four on the list is predictive of some level brain damage as well, which can be confirmed by MRi.
The link between alcohol consumption and fetal damage was first noted in WWII Holland just after the war with alcoholic mothers giving birth to statistically signifigant lower IQ babies, studied restrospectively. This then led to other research on the effect of alcohol on the fetus. Later tobacco use was studied when statistically signifigant lowered birth weight was noted in smoking mothers. Many drugs, even endogenous (ie in the MOTHER) high cortisol levels, have a negative effect on the fetus. That means high stress levels in the mother make for higher cortisol levels in the fetus and potential damage to functional fetal brain development. This is why children from highly stressed environments often develop behavioral issues esp. when they too are in a stressful, environment eg anger, physical,or emotional abuse, etc. The more stress , the more damage is done and brain function can be impaired for life with emotional disregulation etc. resulting.
Not familiar with the literature specifically on Retin A and fetal development though....Sybil Francis, PhD retired prof of psychology and researcher
PS ...You are correct that alcohol is commonly consumed before a woman is present but chromosomal damage can occur then. It is wisest to not drink alcohol at all BUT if a fertile woman does, it is then best to use birth control and stop all alcohol once off birth control. Damage is dose specific so binge drinking would be the MOST dangerous.

My wife introduced me to this channel last night and I ended up watching about a dozen videos. I have NEVER had any specific skincare routine. I'm in my mid 30s and I'd say my skin is pretty good. I feel like i should pay a bit more attention to my skin health so I'm going to start cleansing, moisturizing and sunblocking daily and will add retinol a few times a week for the anti aging benefits. One question i have which you guys may have addressed in another video that i just haven't seen yet, but can you please specifically discuss tips for guys to care for the skin under their facial hair? I notice that when i haven't shaven for a few weeks, my skin gets more flaky and prone to acne in my beard and mustache areas. It seems to me that this could simply be due to an inherent lack of exfoliation as well as oil buildup from the hair growing out, but it could be really valuable for a lot of guys if you could recommend some things specific to having some facial hair. Maybe additionally comment on some of the beard care products on the market and which ones you'd consider good/bad, for what use cases, etc. I don't personally ever maintain a beard for more than a month so I've never used oils or balms or anything, but my brother and dad do.

I have two questions: 1) if I use Retinoids for anti-aging during my night skincare routine, should I be using something else during the day? I´m 25 and besides treating my dark circles I would like to start taking care of my skin for anti-aging purposes and making my skin look (dewy) good without make-up. 2) could you make a video reviewing/talking about different Retinoids from different brands, for example from The Ordinary?

WOW this is such a helpful video and I love your attention to beauty things women of color may be doing like brow threading and just attention to skin of color in general. I love where you talked about how hyperpigmentation affects skin of color in a lot of your videos it made me more confident in taking your advice. So hard to find doctors who are cognizant of their patients health needs and not just throwing the guidelines and textbooks at them. Would love to see a video on how to layer skincare for darker skinned women suffering from hyperpigmentation!

Could you do a video on what ingredients to avoid using in conjunction with a retinol? I just started using salicylic acid (which I love!) and want to start incorporating a retinol into my routine, however, I'm not sure if I should alternate them nightly (e.g., salicylic acid night 1, retinol night 2 ....), or include more of a gap (e.g., salicylic acid night 1, neither night 2, retinol night 3....).

I just started at 30 and I don’t regret it. I know Dr. Maxfield recommended it earlier but I have always had great skin. I have always exercises and ate well so I barely started using retinol and I just turned 30 a month ago. And the only reason why I started is because of the research I’ve seen on Retinol and I want to avoid aging too fast. I actually have very sensitive skin and I started using the prescribed retinol every single day and I have not had any issues.

Thanks for all you guys and your team do to put this content together and share it. Back when I was a teen I thought "skincare" was all about those exfoliating cleansers. I've never actually had bad acne, just the occasional pimple cluster in my t-zone and some breakouts on my chest, but somehow I got the message that THAT was terrible acne and the way to fix it was to scrub it off my face XD. Well, the kinds of products marketed to teenagers back in the early 2000s were extremely drying and irritating to me (shocker). So I tried it for like a month, hated it, and have just used bar soap and lotion since. (In my defense, the bar soap was moisturizing and had shea butter in it!)
I turned 30 this year, and completely by accident, have developed a hyper-fixation on skincare. I'm really enjoying treating my skin well and this channel has done a lot to help me sort through all of the information and viral "hacks" that are out there. I've been slowly trying new things and adding a retinoid is the next thing I intend to tackle.
TLDR: Thanks again for answering all of these questions! Until recently, I thought retinal was only about anti-aging and was kinda scared of it since I've heard that it was also irritating to sensitive skin. But these kinds of videos have really helped re-educate me! I'll try not to be too discouraged at the "disaster" that is waiting to start retinal until I'm 30. ;)

Guys, thanks for the great content! Question: can you do a video about safely mixing and spacing active ingredients? I use retinol (Differin), BHA, occasionally AHA, and a vitamin C + hyaluronic acid serum. I usually alternate retinol and BHA at night, use the vitamin C and sunscreen every morning, and take days off from active ingredients. I have sensitive skin and don’t necessarily love the AHA so recs for an alternative would be great. Thanks!

So, I'm 30 and from this vantage point I wish I had started retinol in my 20s. However, in retrospect I can see that it took me until the later part of my second decade alive to really understand my skin, how to take care of it, and most importantly, that skin care is not a race, but a marathon.
So, while I agree that waiting to use a retinoid likely decreases the positive outcomes, I also think any treatments should be incorporated into a more holistic system that includes - and even emphasizes - using sunscreen religiously.

Thanks for even more great information! I have two remaining questions:
    1) What are your thoughts about titrating up percentage strengths? Does that really matter? Are there side effects to “maxing out” on strength too young? (I’m 28 and have been on 0.05% prescription tretinoin for 4 years)
    2) is it true that prescription tretinoin is just as effective if applied after moisturizer?
    Thank you both so much!!!!

Thank you so much for all your light-hearted and educational content! So grateful that you make these videos for us 🙏🙏🙏 I have one question that I've been struggling to find a reliable answer to, and that is not addressed either in your original retinoids video nor here: Do topical retinoids carry the same risks for liver function and mental health as oral retinoids? I'm guessing they don't have the *same* risks, but since topical retinoids are not recommended during pregnancy, I have to wonder.
