- The Evil Within was the first horror game directed by Shinji Mikami since Resident Evil 4. In this video, I talk about my thoughts on the game and how it stacks up against his previous works.

When the game is not about trial and error set piece sequences, gimmicks, and gotcha traps it's amazing. The atmosphere is on point and weapons (when I have ammo) are quite satisfying to use. Hitting max level and unlocking the special ability for them feels like an accomplishment being well rewarded. I hope the series continues.

The Evil Within was my first horror game ever so I have a lot of bias towards it.
Looking back at it nearly a decade later I still think Its one of the better horror games out there despite all of the junky issues it has.
I loved the atmosphere and art direction in this game. I played it a long time ago but i dont remember feeling like deaths were constantly cheap like you did. I hope you liked the 2nd one better than i did tho. That one didnt have half the charm this one did imo.
I remember getting this game on day 1. For some reason the idiot developer thought it was a good idea to have this forced letterbox through the game.
Forcing you to play the game with black bars on the top and bottom.
He thought it gave off a "claustrophobic feeling". Eventually a patch was released giving you the option to remove that.
Also i remember not understanding shit about the game until i got the DLC's, which explained more about the many aspects of the story that the main game wouldn't.
Especially the one where you play as Kidman.
That one is way more horror focused and forces you to sneak around or run away more than actually fight.
Btw the sequel is way better. Still is an action horror. But it does have moments where fighting is not possible and you have to run and hide.
Yeah I turned off the black bars straight away lol. I was playing on an ultra wide monitor but in 16:9 so it looked extra stupid having black bars on the top and the side. I am excited to get around to the second game eventually.
I might buy this game! I really do want to play Resident Evil 2 and 4 i hear those are the best but then I do skip part 1 and 3 so idk if i should just stat there.
You can start with 2 then play 3 and 4. RE1 is definitely one of my favourites so id recommend it to you. But it is a different style to the others its not as modern and it's not a third person game. If you can deal with it being a little bit different then you should play RE1 first
