  • Description from DVD back cover:
RICHIE ASHBURN IS ARGUABLY THE MOST BELOVED FIGURE in the long and storied history of Philadelphia sports. He thrilled fans for over a decade with his exploits on the baseball diamond, then spent the rest of his life entertaining generations of Phillies fans from the broadcast booth. His Midwestern wit and dry sense of humor seemed to be in sharp contrast with the gritty atmosphere of East Coast baseball, but “Whitey" won over this tough town with his straightforward approach and playful charm.
RICHIE ASHBURN: A BASEBALL LIFE chronicles an amazing journey that takes us from his humble beginnings in Nebraska all the way to his enshrinement in the halls of baseball immortality at Cooperstown, New York It's a story told by his family and friends, teammates and colleagues, and by Richie himself in the form of archive interviews, broadcasts and rare Ashburn home movies. It's all lovingly narrated by his best friend and broadcast partner, fellow Hall of Famer Harry Kalas.
This two- DVD set is packed with wonderful extras. Over three hours of bonus footage includes: a hilarious selection of classic Ashburn stories, told by and about "His Whiteness"... a series of great and not-so great broadcast clips from his years in the booth... all of the various on-field tributes to Richie in their entirety including his Hall of Fame induction speech... and many more surprises.

Richie Ashburn was known as being very "frugal." He claims his greatest catch was when he was at bat. First pitch was a bit outside but called a strike. Second pitch was further outside, but called a strike. Third pitch was even further outside but called strike three! Richie said he was so angry he threw his bat in the air as high as he could. The umpire said, Richie, if that bat hits the ground you're fined $100. His greatest catch.

Richie was a great guy but does not belong in the Hall of Fame. The same with Phil Rizzuto.
