I grew up for the first 11 years of my life in South Jersey. I listened to Harry, Richie, Andy and Wheels on tv and radio. I was in tears both when Harry and Richie passed.
I left work for Whitey's Funeral and spent the night at the Bank after the game against the Padres for Harry's Funeral. My childhood finally ended at the age of 41 when we lost Harry. Great Memories and it still gets me whenever I think about or see videos like this one. Thank You for some of the Greatest Memories of my life and RIP Fellas.
Harry allowed the game to breathe. He did not chatter needlessly. He spoke in specific terms at the moment when a good broadcaster should speak. Harry was so great one could define his excellence in terms of his silences. And when Rich Ashburn was by his side, the Harry's succinctness and Richie's dryness blended into perfection.
Richie an Harry always remind me of fishing at Pecks pond every Sunday with my Dad an brother an listening to them on the radio. And they also remind me being at home an listening to the radio instead of the TV, just so we could listen to both of them call the game. These two have given me cherished memories that I will never forget.
God, I miss Harry so much! I was in sixth grade, everybody was preparing for morning announcemets when the screen said, "RIP Harry Kalas 1936-2009". I did not know who he was during that time.
If u were a young kid listening to these two you learned about baseball, friendship, conversation, sportsmanship and when to just shut up and watch. Thanks guys.
I use to work at Lit Brothers in downtown Philly..after I would get off work I would head right to the ballpark..Richie was one of my favorite players,he was a great lead off man, always getting on..just a slap hitter but always got on base. If I remember he beat out the great Willie mays for the batting title on the last day of the season. At that time Gene Kelly was the announcer along with byrom Samm
Daners 424 Yep, some of my greatest memories with my family were because of them two. Boy did he love the Phillies. I remember lots of times him getting mad an cracking jokes in the heat of the moment when they made bad calls, it was the best. Thank you Harry an Whitey for some of the best times as a Phillies fan, even though we stunk most of the times, you guys made it enjoyable.
not that this is relevent to ashburn or the phillies, but i was in boston when ted williams died and the sadness that was around the city that day was tremendous. and for the record, go phillies!!!
At 5:30, no truer words were spoken. Harry continued to remember (and openly mourn) His Whiteness for the next 11-1/2 years, until they were once again reunited. As Harry said at 6:27, Whitey & Harry were best friends. They even passed away nearly the exact same way from heart attacks - Whitey after a Mets game at Shea (his final team as a player) and Harry before a Nationals game in DC. Harry grew up as a Washington Senators fan.
I heard the news of the passing of His Whiteness by none other than Pierre Robert. Pierre knows literally nothing about any sports but knew the importance of the loss for "the boys in blue" as he broadcast the news.
Harry and Richie are well missed today and years beyond
Richie’s anecdotal stories to Harry were always a joy to listen to.
Harry was never the same after Richie passed they were practically brothers!
Both Richie and Harry will be missed. To say they will never be replaced is false. To say they are irreplaceable is true. RIP Richie and Harry.

Richie Ashburn, always my favorite Phillie, the baseball hero of my childhood.
Harry Kalas was also the voice the Greatest Sports Legends TV show in the late 70's.
Losing both of these guys were hard but I was in bigger shock the day Harry died.
Richie Ashburn, What a Star, he will be very missed, loved growing up listening too him, and watched him with the phillies. Great man.
If u were a young kid listening to these two you learned about baseball, friendship, conversation, sportsmanship and when to just shut up and watch. Thanks guys.

Harry grew up as a Washington Senators fan.
Al Meltzer is gone now, too.
now that's a VOICE (harry kalas)!
“He’s got high apple pie in the sky.”
I remember when that happened
Now Harry and Whitey sit in Heaven telling Wheels and Sarge to shut up for just a few minutes an inning...PLEASE!
@sgtarmas You think Charlie Manuel would be next no?
I miss both of these guys but Harry was a lot harder for me.
If you knew baseball shirt knew it. Harry and whity were the phillies!

@THEBARFO There aren't enough people on earth to give this comment the number of Thumbs Up it deserves.
