    I see that lap steel.
    Edit:
    Right after I type this and hit enter you picked it up. I play and build guitars and tube guitar amps, also mess with 1930s-50s tube radios and record players. Fun stuff.

    I remember those Califone machines from my school days in the 60s to early 70s. The tube ones were the best! Big speakers in them. Once or twice, I saw the big ones come out. Those will really rock the house, especially for a transportable machine. Back in Colonia HS in the early 70s, there was a rack mounted system in a small locked room in the gym. Someone got in there one day and had some really good rock and roll playing, up loud. Fantastic sound in that gym. Given the time period, with school having been just finished in 1967, I will bet that it was a vacuum tube powered system. Never did get a good look at it. Probably long gone by now.

    Your Ion turntable actually has pretty decent cartridge.That is an Audio Technica AT-3600-L with an unmarked conical stylus. Millions of these have been sold worldwide over the years. They are installed on budget turntables from the factory but also come installed on higher end equipment. The specs on these cartridges is quite impressive and you get good sound on good quality equipment. In your case the cartridge may be better than the record player. They are not expensive cartridges.

    What I use mostly is a modified Technics SL-1200 Mark II. It was modified by a gentleman here in NJ to have 78 RPM speed capability, and a damper for the tonearm. I use Grado cartridges on it. For 78s, I use a Grado 78C. A 78E is also available. The difference is conical vs elliptical stylus. It tracks at 1.5gr. Usually connected to either a Sansui AU-717 or a Marantz 2270. One of my 78s is a practically N.O.S. copy of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away, on Brunswick. I got it from a gentleman in France several years ago, via the auction site. When I play that record with the aforementioned setup, it is very very close to CD quality, and certainly as good or better than any LP. That AT table you showed is an inexpensive copy of the 1200. Get a genuine SL-1200, and use that Grado cartridge. It will NOT be cheap, but it will sound great! The 1200 series DUAL turntables are good too.

    I like to play my records on whatever type player was available when they were made. For example, if I have an early stereo record from the early 1960's, I will likely pull out the 1959 Motorola stereo record player. If it is a mono recording I will play it on the 1958 Phonola, or the 1957 Voice of Music record player. I like to play the mid 50's 45 records on one of my RCA 45 players. The original 45's from 1949 I would use one of my RCA RP168 players. Electrically recorded 78's I would play on one of my players from the 30's or 40's. Acoustically recorded 78''s I would play on one of the wind up victors or Brunswick Phonographs. Why, well because that is the machines those records were mixed and designed to be played on at the time. I have record players back to 1912. I also have more modern vintage gear from the 1960's and 70's. Since I restore vintage electronics and can service the record changers, I have no problem finding the right player. But as always the right player is what sounds best to you. I probably have 40 or 50 record players, and only a little over 6,000 records.

    • @ijuggle42
      @ijuggle42 2 года назад

      I have noticed this as well. I have an old RCA EY-6 and a 67 Magnavox Console that records of that era sound excellent on. My wife like 80's hair bands and such and I've noticed starting around the mid 80's they just doesn't sound right. I think its to much information for the vintage equipment to sort out. I have a relatively modern set up in the garage for that stuff so the neighbors can enjoy it too.....whether they want to or not.

    • @lizkrinsky5209
      @lizkrinsky5209 2 года назад

      Glad you said that. I found the same thing. I have an Admiral radio/record player from about 1947-50 that I play 78's on and early 33 1/3s. I have a 1950 RCA 45rpm record player/radio that sounds great for pre-stereo 45s. A 1957 RCA New Orthophonic record player that I play hi-fi and pre-stereo albums on and my first real stereo stuff... a Philips 212 electronic turntable, Marantz receiver and infinity QBs from my senior year in high school. I get so tired of hearing people say that the older record players will ruin you records. Not if you are playing records from the same era that the record player was made... they were made to go together. Even my 45 albums that were my dads and he only had the RCA 45 changer, are still glossy and still sound great. Use the right needle on the right player and you are fine and wow do they sound great. So rich and warm.

    Okay, I have about 15 78s, make that 14. One just broke from me just talking about them! Which leads me to my sorta question. I see you flip through them like no worries. When if that was my collection, they would be breaking right and left. My favorite Nat King Cole Smioe record broke simply falling on the carpet forward when it was leaning against the wall. I notice your in North Texas and I'm on the coast in Corpus Christi... so is the dryer air better for them? Some of my gems are Little Richard, Long Tall Sally on Specialty, The Platters, Only You and Lowell Fulsum, Night and Day along with the other sides of course. I'm very gentle with records but I'm afraid to touch them! I also have Mack the Knife, and Shake Rattle and Roll.

If I had a 78 cutting machine I would cut test records with frequency sweep and white noise to be able to properly test 78 rpm record players and tube preamps. Such test records are Nowhere to find.I build tube preamps and have searched for test record for 25 years... If you find one I'll buy it :)

      My Newcomb R-12 from 1954 is one of my most prized players. I really njoi your video. I also own the Audio Technica and dislike it intensely. For starters the cuing has no damping. The table "cogs" when coming to speed at 78. And my 78's sound awful on it. It's sitting on a shelf in my closet. Good money spent on overly hyped b.s. equipment. Digging you.....!

  • @Onteo1
    @Onteo1 3 года назад

    Thank you for the tour. That audio Technica lp120 sounds bad because of the preamp. Even switched off it still runs through it. I bought one specifically for 78s. Every record sounded like I threw a blanket over my speakers. Sent it back to the factory (my expense) and was told it was I specs. There are videos of people gutting that darn pre amp but, I’m just gonna sell it and find something better. I liked the versatility of swapping the 78 cartridge out to a standard cartridge to play a 45 or lp.

    • @jeb419
      @jeb419 3 года назад

      Probably because the preamp is equalized for RIAA equalization while older 78’s are not equalized for that specification. 78’s on RIAA will sound like a wet blanket is on them. The fun thing is that different eras sound better with different EQ’s, so many ways to go with 78’s

    • @Onteo1
      @Onteo1 3 года назад

    • @jeb419
      @jeb419 3 года назад

    Yeah I've got the Technics 1200 that your audio technica was based on. It's a great turntable, but not so good for old 7", they just don't sound right. Berry Gordy used to sound test records through old car speakers because he realised that's where most kids would listen to his songs.
