Hey Buddy , Thanks for the ride along .... I am working toward doing what I call neighborhood dirt work .Keeping it to a close 5 mile radius until I get more experience ..over the past 10 years I have a F-800 Dump truck , a JD 410 Backhoe a JD 301 with a brush hog and a Bobcat . I hope to aspire to the purchase of a 7 to 10 ton Excavator very soon . Since this will be my fun job not my primary for now , wish me luck . I am originally from Harrisburg N.C. Now I'm in Hawaii for the last 25 years . I love playing in the dirt too.
Todd, i sure do appreciate your videos. I'm 2 years in part time grading business in North Georgia. I keep busy, this winter did not slow down at all like it did the year before. I really need to officially go full-time grading, just worried. I bought a Kubota KX40 that I do all my jobs with. I mostly do driveway grading and drainage ditchline work. Your videos add value to my life.
For the work we do on the farm , currently a pad for the trailer sawmill , log handling and drying. I'm self taught but still a beginner and this is one problem I have. This has been very helpful. Many thanks from Wales , UK.
My grandfather dad and I just started up an excavation company, we do trenching pretty much for plumbers or electricians, we run a bobcat e35 and a case 580 for our machines, that’s a nice sized mini
Awesome video man I'm 57 years old I've been a carpenter my whole life I got sick of it was sick and running up and down flights of stairs so I just bought a mini excavator Bobcat 324 would I be able to do that job I know it would take a lot longer but would I be able to do jobs like that with that little machine
Would you consider making a video with a list of equipment and the order you would purchase that equipment as if you were just starting in the excavation business today? I have a truck and a little twin axle 16ft car trailer and I was wondering if I could advertise for excavation jobs and rent the excavator by the day or week and use that set up until I was aware of the demand for such services in my area? That would also involve getting an LLC and insurance before I even worked the first job correct? Thank you for the quality videos and information btw.
One of the most important parts of estimating any job, and so very often overlooked by beginners, is to stop basing your price on what someone else might charge for the same job. Just because the other guy has a price doesn't mean he has the right one. Your costs are yours and his are his. Price according to your costs and add a comfortable profit, and forget the other guy exists. You have no competition. There's enough work for honest craftsmen who care about their trades and a severe shortage of honest craftsmen. If you're good at what you do, you will always have something to do
You want a quick measure of the back wall ahead of time. run a string or tape out from the back to the front and level or adjust to grade and that string to the ground would be the height of the back wall.
Thank you for the video, could you mock up 2ft and build a house pad about 40' x 60' with this machine? I also have to remove some 42" stumps from the ground!
You have helped me a bunch especially on how to bid jobs. I respect what you do. But you really need to get a laser level. I bought a Topcon but I wish I'd got a Bosch from Lowes or Home Depot. Half the price and just as good. Lot of my friends have them.
Jealous of that nice dirt, I have nothing but powdery silt & shale rock down here in Cabarrus County NC. You’d have had to brought a rock breaker to have dug that at my place.
I'm guessing that the bigger excavation companies have overhead cost that makes their pricing on small jobs unattractive. Nothing against employees (we all were employees at some point), but employees pile on costs and complications to an otherwise simple, low stress and profitable business. I like how you think:)

Sooo true my friend, I got a small job to level a place for a pool for $300, only a 1/4 mile from office and only about 15’ square.

I ended up redoing it and sloped the back at a 2 to 1 grade
