The cost is the cost, it's an old 911 with 150k miles on it. The memories it's given all its owners in over twenty years, just think of it were a lesser manufactured brand, it would be made into a dishwasher by now and little Irish is still perfectly usable as a modern classic 911. Nice to see the dedication Lee.
225.000km on my 1997 996; four engines. First original engine blown up due to hard track use by earlier owner, second AT replacement short block had a disastrous rebuild with misaligned heads due to a uneven block, a mechanic that shredded some threads in one of the heads and figured it was ok to use helical insert threads and two component glue etc etc. Third engine was then a rebuild of the second disaster that lasted maybe a month until that ended up in a total intermix disaster. 12 months later the car got a factory new 2021 stamped long block (block, heads all internals) all auxiliary components replaced etc. Purrs like a cat now. While I did have that engine swap I bought a factory rebuild and zeroed G96 manual gearbox, installed the Numeric shifter and cables. Like you said the 996.1 base Carrera is absolutely the most Porsche 911 driving and ownership pleasure for any money. Hope to see you on the roads of Norway this spring/summer.
@@chrisb9360the new M96AT engine is based on the reinforced 997 engine with internal large lifetime IMS and improved heads with regard to better cooling
Brilliant video Lee, the guys there are so on point some sound advise given to you and us viewers of this cracking channel. Keep those miles and memories coming. 👍
Leaking of the IMS bearing is not an indicator for a failing one. It will fail for sure even without leaking. Did you ever cut your engine oil filter open to check for excessive wear? If the engine is out it makes absolutely sense to change the IMS and also check for bore scoring on these M96 (non Mezger) engines.
3.9L Hartech in mine now. I fitted new back box hangars this winter, chuffing expensive. DIY rebuild of the 964 engine this year too. (Might ask Wrightune to help with the machining/inspection). £££. The 'while it's out' is a mixed bag of satisfaction and cost. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for sharing Lee. Open & transparent as always. This car has given you great service over the years. As previous owner of early 996 can I attest to their all round abilities - so on balance it’s done very well. 👍
Well done mate I have done the same thing on my 997 the fuel rails look worse then they will be the metal on them is thick one thing I would add on 997.1 is the oil level sender as well and the spark plugs are piss easy with it on the floor
Being from the States, hearing the mechanic say that driving 2 hours round-trip for the clutch was them “driving halfway around the world.” made me laugh. 😂 Great content keep it up!
My 997 had that squeaking problem upon start up, sound like a distressed pig. I bought a reconditioned one off eBay for about 90 quid and changed it in front of my house its been fine since then that was like 6 years ago
Same here with my 997.1…I had a starter for £100 new some shop on eBay roughly 4 years ago I was told go for a Lucas or Bosch like the original in the video but as that failed in 3 years I’m glad I bought the one I have….
AOS, Y-cable, clean and cali the injectors, coils, and plugs, IMSB, clutch, pressure plate, pressure bearing, RMS, watter pump .... I think you have a new expansioin tank already, new aux-belt. YOu might want to renew starter motor. If your cats are original the insulations are done. Tensioners. And really I would do also the cam chain sliders. And do the boroscope now. ... any starter motor problem can also be Y-cable problem.
Not related but trying to find out info! You spoke on one of your videos about a vibration due to suspension wear on the front end and mentioned which parts were worn.. Can you tell me which parts this was as I can’t find that video!?
Nice video thanks. Would love to know - like everyone else - how much this work cost. Also, can you please confirm that you bought the fella that beer at the end ? Thanks PS Irish Green is great I have to say.
@@mikefranky 6 months ago I had a number of things done on my 986, including the clutch. It was £2,400.. I'm thinking this would have cost a fair bit more than that. It's never great to get big bills but when the car performs better afterwards and the confidence it gives you, it's all worth it. It's only money.😁
My 996.1 is on 208k. Its just come back after a cracked cylinder head intermixing disaster. Its a great car, but needs to redeem itself for the major size of the bill..😢
New starter motor on the original flywheel can mean the worn flywheel teeth rear up the starter motor teeth prematurely. Personally on 150k car I’d change the flywheel along with the starter. Good moment to fit a lighter fly wheel as well.
Bosch are not what they used to be. Many German brands have reduced the quality of their products to compete with high quality Indian and Chinese parts. Same thing with Tyres, there is no difference in quality between good Chinese tyres and expensive Michelin, but you will pay a lot more for the branded items. Even new Porsche cars are not built to the same standard as the earlier cars were. Your 996 is better built than a new 992.
My thoughts exactly. If little irish is a weekender then lee could take a month to do this work when hes got the time. Older cars like these aren't difficult to work on provided youve got the right tools. Of course you need adequate space to do this. Which lee may not.
@@9WERKSTV well, that can be a slippery slope. With how you use the car, there best answer is regular deep cleaning. There are clear protective coatings, but to do it most effectively, you would really need to disassemble and clean/treat each piece, and that's not likely to happen for most of us. I'm certainly in that camp. I want to keep stuff together and drive the car as much as possible.
Any engine out as here is absolute minimum £3k+, the cost varying wildly according to a number of factors: - How easy the engine comes apart (bolts shearing off etc) - Labour rate of your chosen specialist - Cost of replacement parts used (OEM v cheap knock-off etc). Porsche really are junk, I have over 200,000mls on my Tesla Model S and it’s only needed two door handles at £500! It’s also way faster than a Porsche and fits the family and stuff in it. Can’t understand why people pay soo much for these things?

Was it a 3.6 or 3.4 originally? What extra was involved if it was a 3.4? What power gains?

Amazed this is the 1st time the engine has been out on this car 👍
I meant to ask is Irish on the original IMs?
Good for another 70k ! No more pushing round the streets of Mulhouse 🤣. Nice informative video 👍🏻👍🏻
Do you have the part number for that sprung clutch disk? Can't seem to find a sprung one compatible with lightweight flywheel anywhere.
Thank you!
From a DIY perspective, doing the AOS with the engine in took me about 10 hours, so for the price of them its defo a job to do when it's out.

Either change everything perished or buy a lift at home because you're going to have to deal with an engine out pretty often on that old thing

the damp UK weather kills all the metal bits
Didn’t do the rusty fuel rails?
Whatever they spray on your roads is nothing short of a crime against humanity.
That starter motor looks like ti was rebuilt, so probably lasted a lot longer than 70k miles.
So while the engine is out, are you going to get it dry ice cleaned?
No, I’m keen to explore dry ice cleaning but want to look at ways to then protect everything after, which is more important.

2 pieces and welded together, you could have cut it and shortened it the same way it was built,
