This licensed recreation measures 38 1/8" overall and offers a 30" 420 stainless steel blade with sharp edge and laser etched runes. While this was sent to me by a vendor, I was under no obligation to give this item a positive review. Any praise/criticism in my reviews is my genuine opinion/thoughts. If you are surprised that I really enjoy a LOTR piece of memorabilia, you really shouldn't be. :)

They are so well made.. All created with so much care and love.
Love your content, I always fall asleep to one of your lore videos. I hope you will also continue your star wars lore, the ones you've done so far are great!
I gave a research presentation for a college course on the historicity of the weapons designed for the films, and I actually spoke to Peter Lyon about some of them. We spoke about Hadhafang at good length and he advised it was primarily designed by Warren Mahy and the grip was originally NOT curved, but became curved during Peter's heat treating process when the blade was quenched. It warped into the shape and became a happy accident because Peter liked the shape. The first 8 inches or so of the sword blade are a ricasso, and the curved sections Peter referred to as barbs, rather like those one finds on vines. It was a design feature from Warren. The groove on the back of the ricasso section is a false edge. It's two bevels that help reduce a little weight and also look nice. Warren based the design for this sword on the Circassian/Russian/Cossack shashka and European military sabers from the 19th century. Peter also gave me measurements for the original prop when we spoke, so I can say that apart from the distal taper of the blade of your reproduction (there really isn't one), it's mostly a correct 1:1 replica. An additional fact I will give you is that Peter did intend to actually strap on the jeweler's magnification glasses and physically carve out channels in the grip to set gold-filled copper wire into, just like he did for the hero swords of Sting (except that was silver wire). He also intended to carve all the runes in the blade and set in brass wire and hammer it flush, but he was stopped from doing it because it would have taken SOOOOO much of his time for a sword that they did not expect to get the closeups Sting did. I inferred from his comments that he was relieved to not do the work, but also miffed that he didn't because he's a stickler for quality and craft.
damn, here I was proud of myself to be asked to lecture at a Barnes & Noble.years ago
That’s so interesting. If you ever considered making a video on this I’d watch!
Thank you so much! I was really wondering why there was a second "blade" on the backside of it. The weight reduction totally makes sense.
Great post! I’d only add that the ‘barbs’ above and below the… uh… false-edge ‘ricasso’ could be classified as something like off-set haken
@@marksanders573I'm gonna take my time and investigate every aspect of this comment.
I got Hadhafang as a letter opener when I was little, I always adored the design of the sword and anything of the elves 😍 I also got to briefly speak with Peter Lyon when he gave a presentation on his works, very kind and amiable person!
Totally agree with you about Elrond’s sword drawn in Dol Guldur. I also know I am no elf; at 5ft1 I am firmly a hobbit or dwarf maiden.
I like dwarf women 😉
I like how you've been using your Gandalf knife to unbox your stuff.
I got this for Christmas back in 2004! Still have it proudly displayed in my house now. Still sharp!
Nice!
In the original concept for the sword, the inscription contained an additional verse of text read as follows: Idril i hel en aran Gond dolen, which when translated read Idril, daughter of the King of the Hidden Rock (Gondolin). The text was omitted from the final design for the sword due to a lack of space on the finished prop. In the behind the scenes documentaries of the Hobbit films, the crew still assert that Hadhafang is a sword that once belonged to Idril, grandmother of Elrond. This is an invention of the film makers, yet it still gives lineage to the sword that Elrond wields. As such, it may be well be a sword of Gondolin.
Looks awesome! Hadhafang honestly has one of my favorite designs out of all the LOTR swords. Number one's got to be Orcrist. I just love the curve designs!
I bought this sword when it was released yeeeears ago! It's an amazing piece.
Always loved the elven weapons in the trilogy. I hope one day they'll have Haldirs sword available. While it's pretty similar to Hadhafang, it's still really awesome looking.
this sword looks amazing and unique fron most others, and it's rlly good for display. great work showing it off
Arwen is one of my favorite characters from the movies, so this is really cool to see. Love the vids, keep up the good work. Oh, I also got the orcrist sword from the noble collection for Christmas
Awesome Reveiw! I just got this for Christmas from a Family Member! Its awesome! Mine was so Shhhhhhharp!
I got the Witch-King sword from UC a few months ago, I watch these unboxings to see what else I could add to my collection.
This would be a cool one to collect. The 2 years I've been watching NOTR, Elrond has grown into one of my favorite characters.
Yes!! I got my Hadhafang several years ago, and I’ve displayed it proudly on my living room mantle ever since. My only question is, as a big Elrond fan, what took you so long?? 😊
I was gifted a fairly shoddy reproduction of this blade once. The tengwar is printed on and really all of the intricate paint work on it is one damp rag away from fading completely, but it's definitely one of my favorite possessions.
That's a truly gorgeous replica and after seeing it, I think it's time for me to buckle down and replace mine. One can't have too many elvish blades, after all.
I got my sword as a birthday present, I love it, it is such a beautiful sword 😍
For my Lord of the Rings Sword wall display, I modified Hadhafang's plaque to mount it on the wall. The two tangs make it pretty easy actually.
Being a curved blade, I have it one one end of the display and Orcrist on the other to give the display some symmetry.
„Unboxing Arwen“? Sounds nice! 🤩
Ahhh! This is probably my favourite sword so far (with the exception of Anduril)! It's just mind boggling that people make these gorgeous things.
I like the implication that, after confronting Sauron and the Ringraiths at Dol Guldur, Elrond decided to give Arwen his preferred sword so she'd be prepared to meet the enemy. As she indeed was at Bruinen.
Those are beautiful swords.
Beautiful. I just got Legolas' swords as a groomsman's gift in November and I got Gimli's bearded axe for Christmas. Been working on a CAD drawing for a wall in my office to turn it into the wall hanger display section. It is coming along swimmingly.
You should totally check us out at Castle Kon. Our mission is to bring these items to fellow collectors for the lowest prices possible. We'll beat everyone's prices :)
Congrats on 900K subs good man!
Really does look fab! Very tempting
Please do a deep dive for Idril. I get the feeling that PJ was inspired by the Lost Tales version of the Fall of Gondolin. It described her as fighting Maeglin like a tigress so I find it weird that the Silmarillion version omitted that sentence. I'd like to think Hadhafang is the reason Idril's line survived.
It would be cool to see a tour of your studio!
I have had Hadhafang sitting on my bedroom cabinet for years, I love the sword, I never got sting but I do seem to have a fetish for elven weapons as I own legolas's twin blades and the elven hunting knife that aragorn is given when leaving lothlorien.
I absolutely adore Elrond, so this sword is amazing. The Fall of Gondolin is my favorite Tolkien tale, so knowing the provenance is from Idril…Gah! Even better!
Take all this with a grain of salt, but I imagine that the jutting bits are to stop swords from slicing your hand, and the sharp bit at the bottom maybe just to make the blade lighter?
Such a gorgeous sword 😍❣️
The small sharp part on the back of the blade can be used to strike a flint rock for starting fires 🔥
I must say that Hadhafang is my favorite blade, ever since I first saw it. So I knew I had to get it. Some years later after the movies had come out a tiny hunting and weapon shop in my town had taken in some authentic replicas. And Hadhafang was one of them, so I had to buy it, So I have the same blade❤
I didn't even know that they would make it, since it barley is seen in the movies. But the owner of tha shop had gotten his hands on only one High Elven Shield. It was so freaking is expensive, but when I saw it hanging on the wall, like Hadhafang I now had to have that as well. So half a year later I bought it. I have some other LotR replicas, but Hadhafang and the High Elven Shield is my favorite ones.
Can you do a video series on how to learn and speek Sindarin fluently? I have been learning it but cant only speak some small phrases such as mae g'ovannen mellon nin! I love your videos!!
Thorens next? oakrest oakcrest I cant remember, but I love that one.
Orcrist. 👍
5:49 isn't a sword like that suppose to be placed backwards? Sharp edge to the top?
Hey friend! Christian Kon from Castle Kon here. We are Tolkien loving sword salesfolks. UC designed the stand so the edge would be down so you can read the Tengwar script!
Beautiful sword. Takes a lot of design cues from Turko-Mongol sabers.
I have to know where you get the swords from and do they also make bow and arrows.
United Cutlery is the producer and they currently are not making any bows. However, if you are interested in these items come check us out at Castle Kon! We ship lowest prices worldwide!
Wow, now this one knows why the mithril blades are so pretty in the movies. It's because the are made from stainless steel in real life. Clever! Although, stainless steel is heavier than steel, but still it's very clever.
Fun fact, Elrod also carries it in the flashbacks to the second age.
And, of course, the video shows that after I posted this. lol
My favorite sword to this day!
There will come a day when I own all the United Cutlery replicas, but it is not this day.
Is there a way to buy this sword at some European online store that ships within EU? As budk don't ship overseas. Thanks.
Do united cutlery swords come with a sheath ?
I get so pumped for these unboxings
Same
Great video! So jealous ☺
There's a Lego rivendel set coming out Soon are you planning on buying it?
Will you be getting striders ranger sword?
this and "strider" sword are my favourites from the LOTR
i love the look and the size and all about it
Narsil? Andúril?
@@theloner6063 no.
The one he has before he was given anduril
What can I say? Hadathang, beautiful, elegant, deadly! Dude, you have your own armoury in your house 🤣🤘😁🖖🇨🇦
The real question is who got the sword and what happened to it. Would it be passed down to the second oldest son since the first born would get Andruil or would the eldest daughter get it. Or did she pass it on to one of her brothers.
What does his t-shirt say? Someone help me out, I can't figure out the language.
Did Elrond use it way back when they first battled Sauron at Mt Doom?
Balın is one of the best dwarfs that i have a respect for he sacrificed himself n fought against the swarm of warts n he always gives u good advises and is always at ur aside to assist he leaves the decision making to u though which is commandable
I honestly hope that your collection becomes a Tolkien memorial museum in the future! 🥰😁🍻🧙♂️🧝♀️🧝♂️
From a distance, it kinda looks like a Turko-Mongolian saber, which is strange because you'd think that the Easterlings would use swords that look like this
Video idea: Invite an sword fighting expert to show or describe how would each of these sword designs be used realistic battle. Strengths, weaknesses of each design, etc...
I second this!
Matt Easton of Scholagladiatoria, or RobinSwords would be my choice, definitely not Shadiversity despite his popularity.
I ❤️ shiny things. This is great.
Arwen's sword has long been my 1st favorite. Congratulations!
Would you consider some women's nerd of the ring t-shirts? The ones you have are for men and Dwarves and perhaps Hobbits. Boxy and bulky for women.
You could also set it on a fireplace mantel.
That is a beaut.. I want one so bad! But sadly even replica swords are highly illegal where u live 😢
How is it possible to make replica? Wasn't this sword taken to undying lands?
That sword is epic
You know I worked on all three movies of lord of the rings haha and we had the hero swords on set all of the time like Aragon's the main urakis that sword too I was part of the principal cast and crew lightening unit 2 back then u could play with them alittle obviously careful . but idk to me they were just props to me.they were heavy though
I have Legolas’ swords from the hobbit films they have the wooden hilt. They are so nice.
I totally made a cosplay of Arwen in elden ring using the scimitar as this sword. Because heaven forbid if an open world Middle Earth game ever comes out
One fan to rule them all
beautiful.. do you now if there are any "battle ready" replicas of this? good steel, not rat tail tang
WHat kind of knife is that? @ 0:34
“They’ve got curved swords. Curved. Swords.” 😅
Hadhafang is def the best looking aword of LOTR is my Favorite
Help I’m looking to buy this sword. You said this was from United Cultery? But the link takes us to Budk? What’s the difference between the one on Budk for $230 and the one from United Cultert for $430? Please help this is the first sword I’m going to buy and I would like the “real deal” love your videos!!!
No worries! So BudK is the official store that carries United Cutlery items. They are owned by the same parent company. 👍
@@NerdoftheRings THANK YOU!!! This is going to look awesome in my "nerd cave".
Curious, could you do a video on Arien perhaps contrasting her with the other maiar fire spirits (aka her idiot brothers) the Balrogs?
Yes please!
The elvish blades in the Jackson trilogy are really pretty, but I can't disassociate that it's probably not what Tolkien envisioned.
Came back to this video to rewatch after I found out the sword is sold out from BudK. I was going to buy it after Christmas for a gift for myself rip lol.
Cool 😀👍
😃😃😃
😀😀😀😀
How much did it cost?
😃😃😃😃😃
where did you read that that's the name of Arwen's sword?
It's the name of her sword in the films. Tolkien came up with the name Hadhafang, but didn't use it. It is listed in "The Etymologies", which you can find in The Lost Road and Other Writings.
I can tell why Balın made that kinda dubbed it a letter opener although he was a dwarf not of long stature himself he could use a long sword or hammer readily
mark you missed the most beautiful sword from the collection. Thranduil's swords
Can I just say that Arwen wasn’t at the Fords in the books... it was Glorfindel..... not that she couldn’t have, but Tolkien didn’t place her there.....
Because of the title, I thought you were gonna unbox Arwen figurine and Elrond's sword.
This was the first one I bought. YEARS ago
if I am not wrong this sword belonged to Eärendil
It belonged to Idril his mother, then got passed down to Eärendil and so on
Not lying with the nerd of the rings
Who owns the copyright to the sword design, Weta?
Is it a real sword can you cut with it?
absolutely not. Stainless steel is an amazing material but it's not ideal for swords or even knives longer than 12". The reason for this is that stainless steel is too brittle for this application. It could shatter on impact sending shrapnel in random directions. There's a video out there somewhere of a QVC/Home Shopping Channel salesman stabbing himself accidentally in this fashion.
If you're looking for a sword to swing around and cut up watermelons or whatever in your backyard I recommned you first do some research about swords and their construction before buying. But generally what you are looking for is carbon steel. Just be safe.... have fun but please be safe.
Put it on the fireplace mantle if you have one
🙌🙌
It should have been Glorfindel’s sword
It's a fantasy blade, so does not need practical features, purely aesthetical purposes over practicality in design.
I think you're only missing Grond.
420 steel am i right guys
There is so much jealousy and want in my heart right now! :P
😍😍😍😍😍👌👌👌👌👌
Hadhafang doesn't have a guard so the notches on the blade are meant stop the enemy's blade when the two blades clash together. Without those notches the blade of the enemy might slide along the blade of Hadhafang and cut the hands of its wielder.
its more to protect the user from the blade, those lobes would offer very little resistance to blade running down your sword.
Such a shame the handle look so bad compared to the rest of the blade
I always wonder what people actually do with these replica swords? Just look at them and swing them about pretending they are the characters?
God bless heal and save you
Youve got a curved sword. Curved. Sword.
