I love watching turning vids from around the world, seeing which equipment is the same as in the west and some that works totally differently. I think people overestimate the dangers on some of the techniques, other videos with loose open belt drives seem to show easy slipping so rather than causing dangerous catching or pinching injuries it probably stalls the piece, I've seen similar setups where the operator just grabs the spinning piece to stop it and remove it from the lathe without disengaging or stopping the mechanism.
you scare me though with that table saw though, that thing will take some fingers, do you have access to a bandsaw? they are much less likely to kickback or drag you in as the blade is moving perpendicular to the wood.

That had to be the "deadest" live center I've ever seen. I expected to see friction start to burn the wood at any time. Maybe putting the bowl in that hollowed out "holder" at the end was the trick. Despite the primitive "everything" there was some skill.

He probably has a repertoire of about 5 items (which is 4.5 more than me) he’s been doing for about 30 years continuously. He won’t be doing them much longer though as he breathes in 1/2lb sawdust for every bowl.
