And what part of this is it that I am supposed to have never seen before? It's a very nice part, and a job definitely well done, but this is wood turning 101.
Its' a pleasure to see a craftsman at work, and a joy to watch a fellow woodturner with such a fluent style. A fine piece underway is that , good looking wood too.
I think it is amazing what people in third world countries are able to do with so little to make a living. After traveling to Haiti many times, I appreciate what you are doing. Keep it up and be careful.
The only "trick" I saw was the one where you take a chance on getting your fingers broken of snatched off of your hand by SANDING WITH A REST IN THE WAY! Good way to earn the name "stubby!" Nice wood, good little bowl!
А трюк в том чтобы увеличить число просмотров и поиметь денежку. Я такие громкие ролики смотрю начало средину и конец. И хрен что такой умник получит от Ютуба.
Much respect to a guy making a living !! just two comments move the switch from the rear of the machine at 0.34 and retitle your video to 10,000 ways to make wood chips . Cheers from Australia
Cool! I like this homemade lathe. I turn stuff on a spring pole lathe. I don't even have a power lathe. I have a motor with a pulley wheel on it. I could build one like this.
I love watching turning vids from around the world, seeing which equipment is the same as in the west and some that works totally differently. I think people overestimate the dangers on some of the techniques, other videos with loose open belt drives seem to show easy slipping so rather than causing dangerous catching or pinching injuries it probably stalls the piece, I've seen similar setups where the operator just grabs the spinning piece to stop it and remove it from the lathe without disengaging or stopping the mechanism. you scare me though with that table saw though, that thing will take some fingers, do you have access to a bandsaw? they are much less likely to kickback or drag you in as the blade is moving perpendicular to the wood.
That had to be the "deadest" live center I've ever seen. I expected to see friction start to burn the wood at any time. Maybe putting the bowl in that hollowed out "holder" at the end was the trick. Despite the primitive "everything" there was some skill.
There is something magic in woodturning. Btw I think the trick is to not start a fire in this workshop, I would walk there with a fire extinguisher on my back.
I'm always amazed and inspired by this kind of work being done with very basic and home built equipment ! Beautiful result too ! Bare feet in all those shavings, must be comfortable !
But also a nice fire hazard. If one ember lands in it, the place will go up in flames in seconds. I don't get why it's too "difficult" for them to just sweep out at least the sawdust around the lathes.
Before we use any power tools, let's take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this, there is no more important safety rule than to wear these: safety glasses! -Norm
My first thought while watching this and seeing all that sawdust piled up on the floor, was KABOOM! I'm really surprised they haven't burned the place down yet.
You missed the one where they got a guy, who was unfortunately desperate enough to work in this dangerous environment for about 10p a day. He probably has a repertoire of about 5 items (which is 4.5 more than me) he’s been doing for about 30 years continuously. He won’t be doing them much longer though as he breathes in 1/2lb sawdust for every bowl.
Saw a demo some years back, the late and great Allen Batty. He was telling the tale of turning billiard balls out of elephant ivory. A couple of years process. They would use straight sided cylinders for a jam chuck. Nice job.

Turning between centres, cut it off and bore it out (+ boring me) Then fix it into a ghetto wooden collet style compression chuck and finish the inside, I'm yet to see anything that has'nt been done for the last 800+ years! So whats the trick?
Ne abbiamo cose da imparare ,anche i nostri nonni sapevano cavarsela con poco o niente ,noi siamo rammolliti, molto abile e sveglio il nostro amico bravissimo
I think it was at 10:28 - removing the piece from the friction chuck by hammering the pointy end of a drill bit with a hammer. That's something you don't see in every workshop!
damn... enough wood chips / sawdust on the lathe floor to cause a 3 alarm blaze. pretty impressive if not primitive machinery and tooling to create the end result. skills honed over many years no doubt.
This guy is doing a great job, and with these tools too. Good job.
Thank you, Mom. 😊🌹

Jeez give the guy a break. He probably gets paid 20 cents for each bowl.
I think the piles of wood chips, shavings, and sawdust on the floor around this guy shows an industriousness that is rare in this day and age.
Ha ha ha. Don't worry, they always clean it up after work. Thank you

Well said mate.
I've seen someone use this tric for turning a sphere but hadn't considered it's use in turning a spherical bowl. Very neat work! 👍🏼
Thank you, Rachel ;->
There's a lot you can learn from someone who has to work with the bare essentials!
Thank you
There's also a lot you can learn from someone who has stumps where his fingers used to be!
Yeah- safety. At very least build something to cover the exposed belt drive. Cringe
So was it a bowl or a cup?? Or both since you don't have handles on some of the cups there?
Enjoyed and gave a Thumbs Up

My guess is it's using the drill press to remove the bulk of the waste from the inside of the bowl.
