Great footage guys and some seriously big lightning strikes nearby! I'm a trained storm spotter and I go out in these every time they are forecast. I can tell you now that the strike that set off the car alarm was very close indeed! I've heard thunder like that only on a few occasions and seen where lightning has struck at the time so have good knowledge of what it sounds like from 100m away or less. That strike in your video was massive and no more than 2 or 300metres away and unless you hear that sound live no audio devices can do it justice as to just how loud it would have been! This is a positive cloud to ground lightning strike and is the only type of lightning that makes that sort of sound! Very well done and thanks for sharing 👍!
The explosive, bomb-like thunder you're hearing is caused by positive lightning. This kind of lightning forms in the upper part of the cloud (which has a high positive charge). These lightning flashes can be 10-12 miles long, which means more energy and more intense thunder. That's why you're feeling the sound in your body, even when the lightning is far away. Spectacular storm, by the way. Thanks for sharing!
I wouldn't say we're brave really...we were standing in a fairly sheltered spot. I certainly wouldn't risk being out on a beach or under a lone tree in a storm like this. But I feel fairly safe by a large building. Fortunately we've never had a fear of storms...we both find them exhilarating.
I've grown up with such storms in South Dakota, Oklahoma, and now Iowa. Unless there is a tornado warning, it's perfect sleeping weather. Loved that you shared with us. ❤❤
Oh, so good! I always think of the scene in Poltergeist, when the little boy is counting 1, 1000, 2, 1000, 3, 1000, to track how close the storm is coming. I love a good storm.
Thank you, Richard. I love a good storm and needed the laugh as you involuntarily jumped (as did I) with the crashing thunder. And rain! I sure wish our lightning brought that instead of wildfires. On the upside of being evacuated, my son took me to a farm store so I can load up on vegetables to freeze, when I get home, even though my garden seedlings died from heat and lack of water. They also sell started plants, so maybe I'll get a tomato and pepper and pretend I grew them. :) The fire is being held on the other side of the river and all structures have fire suppression systems attached. Hoses attached to the outside water tap with a sprinkler on the roof. So chances are I'll still have a house to go back to. And, of course, the cats are here with me. :) ~ Jon in rural BC, Canada
I hope you are okay with all the smoke. Even here in Toronto we got bad air conditions due to the fires in Northwestern Ontario. The wind is coming in from that direction these days. The odour of the smoke is very distinct even though it's happening so far away. Meantime we are getting a lot of rain here. I've never seen the trees so healthy as this summer. *of course the caterpillars have denuded some trees but most of them are now growing out new leaves like as if it would be spring again.
Wonderful footage. The loudes thunderstorm I ever experienced was in Austria. The storm got stuck in the mountains of the Oberintal and the lightening was so bright and continuously that you could read a book or something else. That was the first and last time I was scared during a storm.
I grew up with such thunderstorms, noisy , lightning every time and rain … in the East of England they are rare … as kids we were scared but still watching the lightning from the back door … count the seconds between the lightning and the sound , it tells you if it is far or close . That was on top of your head lol.
Holy Commotion 😳 This is Intense…….Mother Natures having a hissy fit. Really appreciate your dedication to the channel in taking time to capture the Storm in all its Majesty, truly Awesome . ✨⚡️✨❤️🌹
Wow that was amazing , that last loud one that set off the car alarm actually made me jump ! 😂 fabulous night shots of the sky lightning up , thankyou fir capturing that and sharing with us all ❤️
Wow!!! That last one was directly above you there!! We had amber warnings here in Devon but they moved east so we didn't get them. That was certainly a good storm!
Fabulous storm!! You know it's a good one when household items rattle and the car sirens go off! I usually stand outside on the steps too.... Can't resist a good thunder boomer and light show 👍⚡⛈️
When I was a kid, our house took a direct hit from lightning. We had a coal fire in the lounge and the flames shot halfway across the room and all the fuses in the house blew. I can hear my mothers screams in the kitchen. Ha ha 😂😂
I usually go into the bedroom, windows shut and one of our dogs lays right beside me. I'm afraid of lightning, not to bad with what follows (thunder). Brave boys.
What such thunderstorm could ever possibly get louder??. Phenomanal that this happened during daytime when storms like this always happen during the night!
Hiya! Yup, Thor (mmm) and Company! It's like that here on Primrose Hill! I hear their CONVERSATIONS and look fwd to Good Company during our Summer months xxx Anyhow, love Yous xxx all good but for lockdown xxx
@@RichardandPaul think I'm having a proper scary month.....mice in greenhouse and house....and had thunderstorms whilst at Mums. At least I'm ok with spiders....currently "encouraging" hundreds to leave my conservatory.😃
We lived for 10 years in tropical Queensland and every wet season we had very load storms every afternoon. The whole house used to shake. I was terrified. I hate lightning.
It was a good thunderstorm, Poor Eleanor and the Cats where terrified. There are some pictures of the Herm boat on Facebook with the lightning. I heard someone’s house got hit by the lightning. Great video ❤️❤️
We had a storm like that not too long ago. 2 inches of rain. We all ran for our cars from the allotments because yanno, it's uncivilized and we are not allowed to have sheds. I got home and my sweet perma kitten Oscar was hiding in the closet. I picked him up and gave him mega cuddles so reassure him that everything's alright. When I'm home the cats never hide from thunderstorms so I didn't know until then that Oscar is afraid of thunder and lightning. Poor little baby. It's raining here again. Serious stuff. No gardening today unless it lets up at some point.
Wow what a storm but I know that you enjoyed it Richard, glad to see you have at long last been able to visit Pauls Mum do hope that she is doing well I love Guernsey visited a few times one of them my Aunt and son were cut off on an Island had to get them rescued by boat have a great time
They were positively charged lightning strikes which are rare and deadly. The normally come from the top of the storms anvil and arise more in high humidity.
Great filming Richard. We had similar here in Sussex on Sunday, I thought the poor dog was going to have a heart attack, she is so frightened by thunder and lightning.
O my days !! My anxiety would hav been through the roof hope u weren’t on ya own can’t believe u went outside !! I live in Yorkshire are we ment ta get a bit a that ? Not that u are a weather man now u have experienced such an event !! 🤣have a good week x
We had it last night. It was like fright night on Hammer House of Horror. Something very mesmerizing about these storms.😨 Suddenly its like a jungle out there with all that rain and negative ions.
No, this is Paul's mum's apartment. It was our first visit to see her in 17 months since the start of the pandemic. We usually visit her every 6 weeks or so but obviously travel restrictions have prevented that until now.

No wonder it set the car alarm off! Nature is a magnificent thing!
This will be fun to re-watch this winter. Thanks

Good ness Richard, best thunder and lightening video I’ve seen
Great footage of the storm made even better by the narration and the captions which added to the drama.

@@RichardandPaul Good thing you live in England. You'd probably be one of
those tornado chasers if you lived in the states you wild man.
You are so right. I would just love that. There's very little to chase here and far too many indirect routes!!!

Don't think your eyes are watering because of the thunder - what are you sat on?
I wasn't sat on anything - I was standing up. My eyes water when I feel scared or excited. What could I possibly be sitting on to make my eyes water?
Call that loud ? Tenby 1973 the loud EST I ever heard in my life
Yes I do call it loud...because it was LOUD.
