- Etude No. 3 from Etudes, Op. 10
Maurizio Pollini, piano
Etude Op. 10 No. 3, in E major, is a solo piano work composed by Frédéric Chopin. This is a slow cantabile study, in which the right hand must maintain a singing tone in the melody whilst contributing to the accompaniment. This étude differs from most of Chopin's in its tempo. It marks a significant departure from the technical virtuosity required in études before Chopin's time. It concentrates on melodious phrasing and legato ambience of performance more than technical skill. It has been classified as a Tone Poem for piano by some critics, and is highly regarded as a quality manifestation of Chopin's love for Romantic Opera and Poland, where he was born. During a lesson with his pupil Adolf Gutmann, Chopin began weeping and cried, "Oh, my homeland!". Chopin was said to have also noted this piece as the most intimate piece he has ever composed, stating that "In all my life I have never again been able to find such a beautiful melody."

Saddened to hear the news of Maurizio Pollini's passing. His Chopin etudes album provided me the finest introduction to this amazing music a teen/young adult could ask for, forming the soundtrack to some of my most tender and memorable years. Thank you for the music and memories Maestro.
This was the most difficult piece I ever learned many (many) years ago. I had the entire thing memorized and I was simply too young to appreciate how the brain works. I haven’t played the piano in so long that I would not even know where to start now but if I ever have the opportunity again before I die, I will start with this beautiful work. If you are still young, do not let these things go or take anything for granted!!
Wow! It might still be in your muscle memory and come back quickly to you!
Did you learn this version or a simpler one?
@@sarahmountstudios3188 I learned and played it as written by Chopin. Listening to it now, I realize what an accomplishment that was for me as a young person. The only way I could play with feeling was to memorize a piece - to get the technical issues out of the way. My father was my teacher- he was, and is, a gifted musician and performer. Like so many others, I simply failed to appreciate the significance of the gift and opportunity I was given. I still hope to find my way back.
@@lawsoncabell There's a part of you that's found it's way back already, it's waiting for the rest to catch up. Why keep it waiting right?
I think you will have the opportunity! ❤️✨
@@lawsoncabell Chopin's music rests deep inside one's hearts. I'm sure you can re-learn it and appreciate it much more than you used to!
Only geniuses can compose music like this. Imagine a big open spaced room, lay in a couch, close your eyes, and there he is playing next to you, that's heaven!!!
chopin wasnt a composer he was a wizard

"In all my life I have never again been able to find such a beautiful melody." -Chopin
Chopin! This Etude op. 10 no 3 in E major, has been my favorite piano melodi for 50 years now, I was 21 when l first bought the record on vinyl in 1973💜
Even if many chopin mélodies are incredible this one is masterpiece 😢❤❤❤
This performance made me love piano and Chopin's music RIP Pollini 😢
This very recording of Chopin's etude sparked the imagination of my writing career. Truly beautiful, may Pollini forever be remembered for his contribution to music!
What made things even more interesting about the etudes of Chopin was to create a series of studies to be used as practice to perfect a certain technical skill...
... Listening to this piece is almost practice for bringing out his/her love for piano which is needed to ever play piano beautifully. Which, you tend to loose when drilled into the technicalities of playing classical music
0:01-1:13: I can play this for sure
1:14-1:38: I could still play it with practice
1:39-1:51: I don't know, should I play this or not?
1:52-2:04: This is too hard...
2:05: GOOD BYE!!!!!
+Kaplop Kaplop 2:05 onward: NOPE
That was exactly my reaction yesterday when I was trying that passage out for the first time, but after keeping at it for a little while I found that it was actually quite intuitive. If it helps, I found it easier to practice both hands together rather than trying out each independently, but that could just be me. It should be easier if you have bigger hands than mine to manage those large stretches.
Chopin had torture "machines" they show us a week ago on tv ( it was a documentary about Georges Sand and him living in her beautiful manor): the machines were made to progressively make you extend your fingers as far away as possible between each other and another one was about making your finger very strong. They said they stopped using that some years later thinking it was not such a good idea for a piano player after all. I guess you should try that for the large stretches :)
For me, to get the beginning passage with the right balance between melody and harmony in the right hand while shaping the melody is actually harder than the 1:52 passage.
+Spencer Jenkins 2:05 is the ez part
I'm going to cry. Chopin's music is too beautiful
Agreed.
con tan pocas notas llega al alma. un virtuoso. forma parte del adn de la humanidad
I know what u mean....
I feel you
Imagine this is only a etude. Just a practice piece.
Chopin is by far one of my all time favorite composers. It's almost like everyone who plays his pieces are just pouring out emotions, even if they don't feel like it (if that makes any sense).
❤ 1:45
This is a perfect melody, even Chopin said about this piece; "I had never found a more beauty melody". This etude made me aprecciate more the classical music.
the level of control that pollini expressed here is simply unmatched. I've listened to dozens of interpretations and i play this myself. pollini's is undoubtedly the best one I know of.
Chopin said himself this is his most beautiful melody, I think he was right!
how about ballade n1 in g minor?
edit: oh no now I see what you mean, you're right
@@aurelio3532 ballade n4
@@mlr3188 Ballade No 1 is legendary. Ballade No 4 is just godly.
Everything of him is beautiful
Nocturne op 9 no 2
Some might not appreciate the middle section, but for me, it's sheer brilliance. The way the music effortlessly shifts from sadness or bittersweetness to a climax of anger and despair is nothing short of perfection. And right after all that intensity, Chopin seamlessly returns to the first melody with a passage, it sounds like a fitting rewind, recharge, or breath of air after everything it's been through. I can't quite explain it. 2:15 Overall I think the middle section is just perfect.
For almost 2 minutes I thought hey, maybe I actually could play this
+Daniel Canales Ikr! Then that crazy middle section pops up and gives me the middle finger ..... :/
middle part is easier than it looks
Gaming Of Gamers
Definitely not
Just starting with the piano (just over 1 month) and my hope didnt last longer than 5 seconds XD
Daniel Canales it gets tricky playing the melody and accompaniment with the right hand
I played this piece before. It showcases the general idea of Chopin, his slow, melodic passages to his fast ballade-like pieces all in one--Etude No.3, Op. 10
Beautifully played
In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful interpretations of this piece, I just can't listen to it enough!
This is my favorite Chopin Etude, and the performance is wonderful too. The second movement of the Second Piano Concerto is beautiful too.
The music note at 1:03 hits me so hard. Brings out some melancholic memories
0:55 - 1:10 the most beautiful thing I've ever heard!
listen muse's 'prelude'. Clearly inspired by this bit of Chopin's Etude Opus 10 no 3
Also listen "Lemon Incest" song by Serge Gainsbourg." Inspired by that.
me too...thank you for marking this part...it's maked me buying LP player
I think I prefer when it returns at the end!
not only this... muse chops Chopin big time
Chopin is a beauty. I never get tired of listening to his works~
Futurama brought me here too. Thanks, G.
This is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. One of my favorites of Chopin's along with Nocturne op.9 no.2 and Raindrops.

Ballada n°1?
@@Un-homme-avec-raison ballade N 1 on top for me along with Nocturne 9 op 1 and Nocturne in C sharp minor
I've 'shopped around' on RUclips and this is the best interpretation of the piece I've heard. So many players do nothing for me in the outer sections, but Pollini plays the melody beautifully.
Thank you Futurama, for introducing me to this song and the other works of Chopin.
I really really love this version; I just adore the emotion so much behind the 2:05 to 2:20 segment in the song, and when people play that with this much speed and FEELING as this one does, aaah. It makes my heart soar.
This moved me so much that I literally have tears falling from my eyes
+Hannah Weisman I know EXACTLY what you mean! Are you familiar with the popular vocal version of this by Jo Stafford, c. 1950, titled, "No Other Love"? She really nailed it for a popular version.
Always sounded to me something like the profound awakening or realization of the shortness, beauty, and breadth of life......and loss.
Really Big Tune...makes grown men cry!
Similar experience with the "Adagio Cantabile" of Beethovens "Pathétique" opus 13. Same melancholy.
If I didn't really know Chopin before, I know him now, because I know that this melody is Chopin, Chopin is this melody. This melody makes my heart melt.
Gorgeous and timeless. This music will delight forever. A work of centuries and a symbol of our Polish nation.
im playing this etude rn and let me tell u- it is hard but so worth it. starting to understand his music and why he wrote it. pretty amazing
I can't get enough of that absolutely heart-melting ending.
0:47 - 1:10 gives me goosebumps every time
Pollini made me the pianist I am today. May he rest in eternal peace!
This piece has completely crushed my resistance, I cried because it is both beautiful and I couldn't read musical note at all. 😭
He wrote most of his music abroad Chopin was raised in France yet remained in love with his beloved Poland and he saw it disappear before his eyes and he got much inspiration out of it. Thats why his music was so inspiring.
This piece will be a joy to play. Such a beautiful melody. Can't wait for that day where the piece will come to life from the tips of my fingers
Stfu no one cares
Omg this sounds so cool
i still get 1 pluses from that inspirational comment

Op.10/5 is best etude. Pollini don't know music.
@@jiancai_nocturne polini what? Idiot
@@jiancai_nocturne Even Chopin himself disagrees lmao. And op 10 no. 5 may be good but it’s considered meh in Chopin’s repetoire

Wow, beautiful music, decoration for the soul, conveys emotions 🥰😍😻
When it swells starting at 0:47 it feels like my soul's being carried to heaven. And I'm not even religious.
This is one of my all time favorites, Thank you so much for putting this up! I like that you have the score on the screen too. Very nice!
We can hear the same music so differently. I remember someone who generally loved Chopin but hated this etude. He said even in the hands of the greatest pianist, it was sentimental mush. And I've never heard anything sentimental in this piece at all. To me, it's mysterious and sensuous. Something beautiful emerging, inevitably, and it crests at the moment that this thing (it could be a natural phenomenon or a person) can be fully perceived.
What's wrong with sentiment? I love sentiments
This theme was used for a popular song called No Other Love, so perhaps sentimental AND sensuous!
Lovely! floating and melodic! love the changes in dynamics.
one of my favourites. Chopin, he was and is the MAN!
It's awesome how music like this can put your problems apart for minutes.
Yes, beautiful
Thank you!! I finally found the song playing during Futuramas finale while Fry and Leela montage their honeymoon. This brings joy to my heart and i think my soon to be wife and I will have this as our first dance. =) thank you
I asked my music teacher, “cher, did you play any Chopin’s etude ?” She said: “yes I did play some” I said those etudes are too hard. She replied “because they are etude :)”. Ughh being able to play an etude is one of my goal in life
With some hard work, you will be able to pull off chopin's etudes. I just started practising on it.
Those mood changings- such as at 1:14 and 1:52- give me chills, deeply... Everytime... And I listen to this piece twice a day. Chopin can play with your emotions in three notes, that's why he was a genius
I just wanted to share my feelings with you guys while I'm listening to this... this beauty.
There is so much to do in your life as a person. Everyday, there is something new we learn, and there's just so many things we go through every hour. Thinking process by itself is enough to carry you through a complexity of mess. Now, on the other hand, when you get the chance to surf through music pieces like this, you suddenly find yourself standing on the top watching all your problems fall apart.
It makes me sad that this wonderful piece is just a study. It deserves more, and belive me, it's not the only one....
Study? For me this is what it feels like if you miss something like beautiful past since the piece is about him missing his homeland
@@archravenineteenseventeeni feel the same
I have loved this melody all my life. I just tried to find it and now it's being played. No other love! Thank you Stjephan Hauser.
The thing that bugs me is that the metronome speed is 100. But people play it so so slow. I love the faster one.
The absolutely best interpretation of Chopin Etude I ever heard in my life. It's difficult listening such sentimental expressivity in today interpretations. It's not a case Pollini has been recognised one out of, even the best interpreter of Chopin, Liszt and other past composers.
Обязательно послушайте как ее играет Ланг Ланг.лучше него-наверно играл только Шопен.
Thank you Mr Pollini, you may be gone, but your beautiful music will live on forever. Op 10 no 3, and Op 10 no 12 always thrill me, but my favourite chopin piece is Ballade no.1... it is simply majestic.
Wonderful music & interpretation!!! Thank for posting this jewel ♥
Thanks for sharing this moving melody ........................Always loved this
Rest in peace Legend
So, so beautiful! Makes me cry. It touches my heart.
Beatiful ! So nice , the most beautiful by Chopin !
Beautiful, 40 years ago I could play this song. Not anymore and not as good as this performance but close. I had 3 years of training by a classically trained teacher. I stopped lessons after 6th grade. I started playing a lot again when I was 24 for about 2 years but moved and no longer had a piano.
Sir Fryderyk Chopin is the pride of Poland! The whole country is very proud of him! 🇵🇱
"Oh, my homeland!"
Loved chopin for 20 yrs. This guy is great. spellbinding.
This is so nostalgic! I am so literally gobsmacked.
wow this is so beautiful! I'm learning to play it now! I can't wait 'till it's finished! I love it :)
Chopin is amazing. This is by far one of my most favorite of his etudes. It differs much from the others with its slower tempi. It's a pleasure to study Chopin and his music.
I did not know the name of this melody, it plays in my mind from listening to my dad playing this on the piano many years ago. Google herd my hum it and broght me here. Thanks!
I heard this etude long time ago without knowing it was composed by Chopin! What a surprise!

one of the best piece by one of the best composer in this universe
Lovable!
My favourite composition of Chopin and it has always been, in my opinion, his most beautiful composition. I had tears in my eyes when I first heard it. Such was its beauty. In fact, it's not just my opinion, but that of Chopin himself too. Since, it's only many years after that I learned Chopin himself stated that in all his life he never again found such a beautiful melody. This piece is deceptively difficult to play and technical(No surprise, since it's an Etude, and all Etudes are technically difficult, as it is their purpose). However, what makes this Etude stand out is that when you listen to it, it doesn't sound particularly difficult to play. It has such simplicity, yet underlying that simplicity is an extremely complicated structure. Pure beauty and brilliance.
I’m 11 and I’m playing this. Love it!
He was actually raised in Poland.. and moved to France at around 18 years of age after writing his first piano concertos. Still.. awe inspiring musician.
you people have no idea what this music actually means, this is the music that was inspired by poland fighting and that inspired poland to fight, every note is a drop of blood!
This is incredible. I love this so much, I envy the moment I can play this piece this well myself ... one day I hope.
