Quelle merveille !
MOLTO CAPACI AMBEDUE. BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO
I first encountered this miraculous music at NYC Ballet with this sublime choreography. I must confess that as a composer I've at least twice shamelessly ripped-off Rave's wonderful "gently falling rain" in the recapitulation. My own piano concerto gratefully pays homage to this wonderful movement.
Notice the sweat on the dancers... after they've given us the impression that they effortlessly and spontaneously moved through this wonderful choreography. The pianist Marguerite Long, who first played this, remarked to Ravel at how effortlessly the opening melody flowed. He is supposed to have glowered at her and responded, "If you had any idea what EACH note cost me!"
Exquisite. Both the choreography AND (of course) the sublime music. Who is the pianist? I'll never forget the night I saw this at the New York City Ballet.
God! Aren't they gorgeous? So wonderful.... French dancers and French music, with this American choreography and Ravel's "hands across the sea" inculcation of American Jazz, flavoring things with a sophistication that only the French might manage. Fabulous.
Haha, I guess I’m the only one who did not like the choreography. One of the most beautiful pieces of music written. The music deserved better choreography.
Nothing better, more meditative, more lyrical, more sublime...
Robbins' interpretation of Ravel through movement is brilliant -- never obvious or forced, just perfectly expressive.
I never get tired of watching it again and again. So purely beautiful I hold my breath.
Quelle merveille !

Breathtaking. Ballerina is Marie Agnes Gillot. But who's her partner in this?
Florian Magnenet, Premier Danseur
