Great bit of kit I run 2 SCU 17's one on my ft817 for portable js8/ft8 and in my shack a ft891 for digital modes too. Another thing I did with menus' is select menu 11-05 and swap from MIC to REAR to make radio work through rear ports then swap it back to use SSB or CW normally. Park the rig on menu 16-01 to control pwr and run MTR in quick menu A to watch ALC on TX levels on SCU17. FT817 is bit different to set up you need to run the rig in Dig mode not SSB. Regards vk5cz ..
Thank you for the video. I had installed (& paid) HRD and was setting it up with the 891, awaiting the delivery of the extra box from your company. I watched it once, then had to go back again. You helped me set up by pointing me to what I had forgotten to change. Tony G7NIZ
I have this setup to my laptop. I agree about being careful with the pins on the mini-din lead. FSK and PTT do not light up at all. I use a USB hub and it works fine.
Hi, you are my solution, I was looking around for so many time about a video with the ft-881 and the wonderful SCU-17 to do digital mode with the laptop, I can do FT8 but I don’t have any idea now do CW with the computer and this equipments and how do RTTY if you can help me that will be great, what another software I can use because the ham radio Delux in impossible get it here and the software and radio configuration, I sorry ask you so much but I really need it your hell with this. All the best for you and your family 73s CL7YW from Cuba
I plug my FT-991A and also my IC7300 with a single USB cable into my PC and use WSJT-X. No need for any extra interface boxes. It appears the FT-891 needs such a box plus 2 USB cables. How can we know which rigs need interface boxes and which don't ? I know that my FT-818 for example does need one because of its age.
I'm trying WSJT-X on 14.074.000, but each time I TX, my FT-891 transmits on 14.073.500. WSJT-X, SignaLink, and FT-891. Why does it jump down like that to TX? Thanks, CE4JDM
Completely missing in this video is: a) Installation of the SCU-17 related drivers, b) second USB cable is not preferred (avoiding yet another ground loop), as serial cable (opto coupler is inside SCU-17) can be used instead, c) earth loop de-coupling opto for the USB cable is not discussed, d) there are much better free of charge programs for FT-8 mode like JTDX and the fact that that the bandwidth of the SCU-17 unit is designed for RTTY but actually too limited for FT8 mode... A real pity!
I totally agree, however I could find no easy way for it to work another way, if you know how it is done I would be grateful if you could email me support@hamradio.co.uk.. cheers, Gaz

Thanks Gary, have a good weekend.
No problem, the second USB is a pain tho.. Gaz
Great video! Thank you.
The SCU-17 works with the FT-857 using the Yaesu TTL to serial cable - USB serial and TTL serial are different...
It would be great if you could one featuring the FT450D, mine is being a nightmare to get the settings right in WSJT-X!!

Have you found a way to omit the second USB cable?? as I could not get it to work without it.. Gaz
Good Morning all. De M0RAY Sittingbourne, Kent
Any other software that is similar to Ham Radio Deluxe?
Hello and greetings from Rio. It's the same process with the FT450D ? Regardless that we don't have a USB port on the back of the radio..
The Yaesu SCU-17 interface works very well with the Yaesu FT-450D

Is it possible to connect the SCU-17 to a smartphone?

Can we have one of these with an ICOM Rig Using DSTAR at some point soon too please?

OK, I've added it to the list, all the very best, Gaz
I'm afraid that you skipped all the difficult bits. These include setting up the data mode and the filter width!

Don't you mean data modes and not digital modes?
Semantics Che, no confusion intended, feedback received loud and clear, kind regards, Gaz
