Hi Steve. Thank you for the excellent tutorial setting up the FT-891 with the MFJ Digilink. Once all the settings are in place everything works great. First complaint goes to MFJ - they DO NOT supply any USB cables whatsoever and you need two. So once you get your MFJ-1205 you cannot operate out of the box, unless you have 2 extra USB-A to B laying around. MFJ does not even mention that the USB cables are not provided on their website. I shot them an email about this matter. Second complaint goes to the Yaesu engineers for not adding separate digital operation profiles in the menu so you can quickly switch settings if you are using different audio interfaces. So I had to make a cheat sheet of the settings. The FT-891 in data mode is actually pretty quiet compared to my IC-7300 which makes lots more fan noise when running FT8. Thanks!

Great job! Sometime it is had to find someone to help you setup the newer modes on older radios. May have been mentioned, but if you set the "soft" functions BEFORE selecting `Data/Pkt` in wsjt-x, you'll likely have to re-set the soft settings once the radio switches to digi mode, most likely when you click "Test CAT"
Thanks TO. Great video. I think if anyone has a semi-modern radio and a similar audio device, this should be helpful to them. It also reminds me of why I am waiting on purchasing a NEW radio. Current connector technology is like future alien tech compared to what they are still using on amateur radios. They are slowly getting there, but I'd like to see more USB, DP, HDMI and other modern and/or digital connectors on radios. There is a reason the rest of the world mostly moved on from DIN PS2 Keyboard style connectors.
The radios and audio processors should be wireless Bluetooth. You can buy $40 mixers that join PC, mixer and source but not a $1500 wireless appliance? It demonstrates the truly unimaginative and entrenched style the Japanese corporate radio mentality is famous for. Look to other brands to develop theses methods before they do. It's just unfortunate that these companies are much smaller making their products expensive. I think those like FLEX will be those innovators while Yaesu and Icom rush to integrate Windows 7 to the market 😆😂😉
@@radiotests Yes, FLEX is a great example of a company that is ahead of the curve. I agree that wireless should definitely be the end goal for radio data and audio, but until then I'm really only asking for modern hard wired connectors that haven't been around since the 70s. DIN is garbage.
To be pedantic, but not argumentative: it's a "weak signal" mode, not a "low power" mode - so normal amateur rules apply - use the least amount of power needed to make the contact. I've worked far off DX at 400w that would not have worked at 5w. Thanks for watching and good DX!
Thanks for a great setup tutorial. What about drivers? I've seen older videos (~2020) where the op downloaded Silicon Labs SCU driver and on Yaesu's website they also have a Yaesu version or you don't need them anymore? Thanks.
Thanks for the indepth video, Steve. I'm new to digital mode ham radio and have heard of using a Digirig for FT8. Is that anything like the mfj 1205 or just a specialized box for cables? Also, I saw RUclipsr run FT8 on a Yaesu 818 connected to an android tablet. Can that work on my 891? Thanks for your thoughts, Michael
If you have a digirig, use it. The MFJ offers the controls on the front for volume in and out. Lots of options in this space - even just making a set of cables and using your PC's soundcard.
How did you know that I was struggling to do this just yesterday?! Trying to do this with an RPi4, Signalink & FT891. It's surprisingly *not* easy to do.
I read your mind from a far using the power of RF! This tutorial is almost step by step what you need for your Signalink and I have used the Signalink for the FT-891 in the past. There are a ton of settings in the FT-891's menus - be sure to get the cheat-sheet!
Good question, I want to say yes, but not the blue ones I showed. I used shorter cables in the video because of cable sprawl. It does include the data cable to the radio for sure (6pin cable)
@@temporarilyoffline Do you have a link maybe for those blue usb cables. Those look like good shielded cables. Most of the cables online are not shielded. Thanks.

Hello Steve! Great presentation at the point when I needed it most. I followed exactly your guidelines but the problem I face is this. I cannot get the receive level slider more than 30 db. I do not use an interface. I made a box with isolation transformers and connected to a cheap usb external soundcard. I have managed to make two contacts but that's all. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Do I definitely need an interface? Many thanks.
@@georget7047 So you mentioned RX levels and then talked about ALC (A TX Side thing) - your RX could be set through RF Gain/Squelch on the rig (outer knob, upper left) and your TX side should be just below the ALC threshold, maybe 1 bar on the meter to know that its working. Hope that helps - I'm back home now and could give it a better read.
I'm trying WSJT-X on 14.074.000, but each time I TX, my FT-891 transmits on 14.073.500. Using WSJT-X, SignaLink, and FT-891. Why does it jump down like that to TX? Thanks, CE4JDM
This is a "feature" - you have WSJT-X split mode set to either 'fake it" or "rig" and its moving to the best spot to TX based on where you are on the spectrum so that you get maximum signal out. The FT8 single you TX is only 50hz wide, and 73.5 is a better place for that signal to originate from.
Yeah, you have to redo a bunch of settings to swap in and out, and even after power off and per band. Great radio, a little hard to live with a times though. I don't think I'll ever sell mine.
That is the MFJ-849 (Made by Nissei) - MFJ version on ebay: ebay.us/JXnRm5 Nissei version on Amazon: amzn.to/3J26WK8 I love it - very easy to immediately tell what is going on with your station.
My FT891 is now turning on SPL when transmitting in FT8. I’m using WSJT-X. Under Files/Settings CAT is COM6, Digirig is COM4, Baud 38400, data 8, stop 2, Handshake None. PTT CAT, Mode Data, Split Operation RIG. I tried FAKE IT. But that brought up an error message. Under CAT test I get a right failure message. Just tried it again…green light. PTT test gave red light. Why does Split turn on? Anyone have an idea & suggestion for correction? Thank you.
Having SPL on doesn't hurt anything, the software will move your radio's frequency to where it would be best suited for operations, both TX and RX - it's the operators choice to run split, fake it (which does the same thing without the radio's split function) and none (which does nothing). Have fun playing around with it
Maybe you can try my idea for making an FT8 interface setup for the 891 using parts from Ali for around $20. I think that would make a good video. I'll post about it in Toads with links to the parts if you're interested.
I forgot to mention (and I can't edit comments in RUclips in this browser) I found inline audio isolation transformers to add to the setup with a 3.5mm jack and a pigtail with a 3.5mm plug. That should solve the possible issue of computer noise getting into the radio or vice-versa over the audio cables. :)
I am starting to think you are tracking my browser history. 1st the Quadra and now the 891, weird that you are dropping videos on them as I debate with myself about hitting the buy now button hahaha.
Neither of them were unique when created and they are slightly different inside. A ham like you or me figured out how to make it all work and then people started making products out of it. And now we have the digirig and CM108 cards and radios that have sound cards built in too.
Not sure what is going on with Raspberry Pi now....this is yet another issue I cannot seem to get installed. Looked at many different sites, and tried multiple different routes(including trying to build it), and yet still....nothing. I'm loosing interest quickly in this project. 20 hours in the last 3 days and I'm not anywhere near closer to starting to Tx/Rx.
Useful video, thank you. But wow man, 100 watts on a 100% duty cycle mode on that poor little FT-891 cannot be a good idea. Great radio, but I feel sorry for its final output power transistors! I'd keep 100% duty cycle modes below 25 watts. Without checking, I think Yaesu recommend keeping power below 40 watts for full duty cycle modes. But to help longevity, I would not use more than 25 watts, myself. I'd want to preserve such a great little rig, not risk burning up the finals - or the ATU if one is being used, or the antenna if it's only rated 100 watts SSB - keep it to 25 to 30 watts. Be safe! 73
From my limited use of digital modes, with my SignalLink USB, soundcard device. (I assume the MFJ is the same!?) I have found that the setup is like using a 3 part, set of weight scales. In order for everything to work, it all has to be very balanced. The radio, balanced with the Signalink, then all the settings within your PC program. A very tricky thing, which causes a lot of spurious cursing 🤬🤬🤬, heavy drinking 🥃🍺🍷, and spontaneous cranial combustion 😵💫🤪🤯🤕... Until you actually find harmonious balance within the force 🤗😊. Or... Maybe its just my Charlie Brown luck? 🤔
Yeah, this radio is a bit difficult, so I made that checklist to go over every time I switch in and out of FT8. Newer radios have a built in sound card and better menus so that transition better. The FT-891 is still a great rig though

@@temporarilyoffline I’m so sorry. Not a signalLink. But a DigiRig. Lol. My bad. Maybe I shouldn’t try radio or comment while I have the flu. Lol. But I will try it slowly and step by step your way and see if it works. Thanks.
@@_onthemike_ Yeah, the setup is 97% the same until you get to choosing the audio device in WSJT-X - I do have an FT-818 version that uses the digirig: ruclips.net/video/sphtfRfsZvg/видео.html
Wonder if I could do this to my FT-900.
If it has the 6pin mini-din port on the back you can!
Great explanation! I like that 891, might get one for the truck!
Good choice! An ATAS too!
@@temporarilyoffline exactly!
Thanks TO, great info for me.
Glad to help
May have been mentioned, but if you set the "soft" functions BEFORE selecting `Data/Pkt` in wsjt-x, you'll likely have to re-set the soft settings once the radio switches to digi mode, most likely when you click "Test CAT"
Thanks for the tip
The isolation transformers keep DC to DC out too, it will hum like mad if you dont..
Nice, thanks! I haven't experienced noise, but I know it had been a problem for a long time and the isolation transformers were the right answer.
Exactly - a true USB-C would be amazing!
@@radiotests On Point Craig!
@@radiotests Yes, FLEX is a great example of a company that is ahead of the curve.
I agree that wireless should definitely be the end goal for radio data and audio, but until then I'm really only asking for modern hard wired connectors that haven't been around since the 70s. DIN is garbage.
you’re transmitting at 100w but I thought digital mode was intended to be a lower wattage mode?
To be pedantic, but not argumentative: it's a "weak signal" mode, not a "low power" mode - so normal amateur rules apply - use the least amount of power needed to make the contact. I've worked far off DX at 400w that would not have worked at 5w. Thanks for watching and good DX!
Awesome video TO, thank you for the great info!
You bet!
Good tutorial Steve. These are very helpful for any happy HAM.🐷👍
Thanks 👍
Very informative. Thank you K2WPA
Any time!
where did you get the power pole port for the back of your ft-891 ???
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/95ytHg6KtBE/видео.html. Very easy mod
Great video Steve. What are your thoughts on the MFJ vs a Digirig ?
They are both great. I used a digirig in the 817 ft8 vid I did and that one will work with the 891 also.
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
How is this vs the digirig?
I want to like the digirig, but I don't have one here to test out. I LOVE the small form factor. Might get one for the FT-818
Thanks for a great setup tutorial. What about drivers? I've seen older videos (~2020) where the op downloaded Silicon Labs SCU driver and on Yaesu's website they also have a Yaesu version or you don't need them anymore? Thanks.
I used a Raspberry Pi and Linux. If you do install in windows without the driver, you can fix it later with the right driver.
Thanks, your video helped me a lot!
Glad to hear that!
Yes to all of that. This video will still help you get the digirig setup. FT8CN or FT8 Radio for android.
@@temporarilyoffline ANY reason to use the much larger and twice as expensive MFJ 1205 over the Digirig?
When do you sleep? Yet another useful video! Thank you.
I love making this stuff and helping out. Thanks for watching!
Need to try this on the INOVATO Quadra
It would work for sure
Does MFJ supply the USB cables as well, or I have to get those? Thanks for the great guide.
Thanks.
Here you go: amzn.to/46FGoqd Some snap-on ferrites would be even more tasty! @@jolebole-yt
I don’t have the FT891, nor use WSJT-X, but this was still very interesting. Great vid Steve, well presented. I suppose I’ll go shopping now!😂 cheers and 73
Its the only logical conclusion - you need a new radio! Thanks for watching.
@@temporarilyoffline - I’m trying to decide on an all rounder for portable, mobile and eventually shack ops. The 891 is the front runner ATM. Cheers & 73.
It was my first rig, has done a good job!
Great tutorial however the reward at the end of being able run ft8 doesn’t seem worth all the hassle.
Thanks for watching!
My kingdom for a way to change the default bandpass filter width for DATA mode on this radio. Every time I fire it up I end up looking at a waterfall that looks just like the one you showed, followed by a few choice words, followed by yet another enjoyable trip into Yaesu menu land.
I wonder if it's set-able via CAT - could write a simple script to fix it up.
@@temporarilyoffline SH0117 is the command if I'm reading it right. Bottom of page 16 of the FT-891 CAT Operation Reference Book. I'll probably setup a macro in ACLog for this. Good idea!

Excellent tutorial, thanks! One question: I can't seem to get to the WSJT-X page at Princeton. I've been there before, but the link doesn't seem to work for me now. I've even tried different browsers but to no avail. In Firefox the page never loads, and in Safari I can get to the Physics dept, but I can't seem to get to the software page. Any helpful hints? Cheers!
I've been having trouble with that site too. I believe it's mirrored on sourceforge and if you're on Linux it's in the Linux repositories.
@@temporarilyoffline Ah, ok, thanks! Actually I'm on MacOS, so I'm forging some new ground. Well, sort of but not really. ;-)

Hi Steve,
Did you install the Yaesu driver for the 891, or just plug in the USB cable to the computer? Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
I'm my case I just plugged in. That yaesu driver might be needed on windows though.
I wonder if the LDG 897+ tuna would work with this radio....something tells me yes...for when my FT897D dies.
I do believe it will - the 891 has the right port in the rear for the LDG tuner to plug into.
Excellent TO!
Thanks GhostMan!
Try changing the volume settings on your interface's sound card?
I did. There is no change. If I increase the level from the sound control panel panel then the ALC goes up.
Thanks for the reply.
I appreciate it.
Dude, where'd you get your colored side rails from?
A 3d printer friend: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4757295
Would you need to change the 1500 shifts 8-3 & 8-4 when working other data modes?
Depending on the mode, maybe. I would start here and make refinements.
Timely. The recent storm killed my IC-7100, I shall miss her dearly. But, the Ft-891 will be here Monday. Cables, cables, cables.
Congrats, I'm sorry for you loss! Have you looked inside the 7100?
Hi. Would this work with FT-857d. Thanks. Good video.
Yes, any Yaesu with the 6-pin accessory port. You'll need to go through 857's menus and "translate" from 891 speak, but all tye basics are there!
@@temporarilyoffline awesome. Keep up the excellent videos.
Have you connected an antenna on the 891 ...?
Nope
Thank You sir
You're welcome!
@@temporarilyoffline Many, many thanks! That worked instantly and solved my problem!!!!!!
Reset your mode while in digital if going back to lsb voice. FT891 is a PIA to get stuck in USB ,80m
Yeah, you have to redo a bunch of settings to swap in and out, and even after power off and per band. Great radio, a little hard to live with a times though. I don't think I'll ever sell mine.
@@temporarilyoffline Great Radio within those confines.

What is that wattmeter/swr meter you are using with that big display ?
That is the MFJ-849 (Made by Nissei) - MFJ version on ebay: ebay.us/JXnRm5 Nissei version on Amazon: amzn.to/3J26WK8 I love it - very easy to immediately tell what is going on with your station.
The width on my 891 only goes to 3000 hz. Does it need to be higher?😊
3000 is perfect.
Have fun playing around with it
@@temporarilyoffline Thank you very much!! I am still trying to get the hang of this new (to me) mode.
DigiRig?
I need to play with one, I've seen mixed results.
I'll looked for it, thanks!
I am starting to think you are tracking my browser history. 1st the Quadra and now the 891, weird that you are dropping videos on them as I debate with myself about hitting the buy now button hahaha.

Ironically the MFJ DigiLink, looks identical to the Tigertronics SignaLink. 🤔 Wierd!?

Be safe! 73
Sounds like a plan. Keep it between the navigational beacons.
But it's an M...F...J...
Anyway..It's NOT a frickin' RACE...
Speed ONLY counts in CW. Slow DOWN...
The tigertronics signalink works great for this thing also!
