- Yaesu's new FTM-150RASP is the first full duplex mobile radio we have seen in some time. Is it time to upgrade the old trusty Icom IC-2730, or IC-5100? Is it time to recommend the new FTM-150 over the IC-2730 to hams who want to get into FM Satellites? Or is there some fatal flaw in this new FM satellite ham radio? These answers and more can be found within this video!

Robert, A fantastic analysis. Thank you. I particularly enjoyed it considering that I just bought a 2730 with getting into satellite work in mind. Wish me luck! By the way, ( from your slide deck) “less than 20 watts” is actually represented by 20. Keep up the good work on You Tube. Mike - KX4YZ.
I am glad you enjoyed it! Yes I caught the typo after the fact. It always seems so obvious after! Thanks for watching and commenting and good luck with satellites. You can do it, 73!
Excellemt video Rob. The 500 is also full duplex but you won't hear yourself coming back because the 3rd harmonic blanks out your receive.
Thanks Mike, that's great info. I was unaware. Thanks for sharing! 73!
Thoughtful analysis. Although I am largely a Yaesu user, the 15 watts is the the appropriate power level for the birds. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I love all my Yaesu's. They are great radios. I can't wait for the FTX-1F but for FM sats it'll be the IC-2730. 73!
The Alinco DR-735 allows you to set the mid power to where you want it. It is also a dual receive and may be full duplex. It also allows you to set the color of each side of the display.
That is also a great radio. It is usually a little higher priced than the 2730.
Excellent video! The only thing I don’t think you mentioned in the comparison is that the 2730 doesn’t come with any mounting hardware at all, no way to attach to radio, no way to mount the body or head so if it’s going to be a portable box and you need the hardware any 2 of those items are close to $100 so it brings it inline price wise to the Yaesu… if it’s in a bag and no hardware used then it’s a savings .. I believe the Yaesu has all the mounting hardware included
@@hamradiocomms very good point. I use with a bag so I often forget that. Thanks!
Ftm-150 price is actually only $379 so the big price difference isn’t quite as big. Everything else is pretty reasonable.
The data port on the ftm-150 makes it way more appealing to me personally
I am glad to see they dropped the price a bit. That makes more sense. Thanks for watching and commenting Nick!
But you can get the ICOM for 279, so the difference is still the same. And as a ratio, it's actually a more significant difference.
Being a television station guy I really like your studio set. Thanks for the review , great job as always. I have been missing you lately on the satellites.
Hey Terry! Thanks for the feedback. It was fun. Always good to shake things up a bit. I need to jump in on more passes! Hope you are well and Happy Thanksgiving! 73
The printed data beginning at ~6:19 shows the incorrect signage for "less than". The sign actually says greater than.
Ah, that's a keen eye! Very good catch! Now if it was only easy to correct! Thanks for watching and thank you for pointing out the mistake! 73!
@Digital Rancher...
Thoughts on the 2730 B that is coming in February vs 2730A?
How about waiting on the upcoming kenwood mobile for sat?
I have both on pre-order. 🤣 I have wanted to add a 2730 to my truck for mobile satellite contacts so I decided to wait for the B. I don't anticipate any functional differences, I just think it looks awesome! I am looking forward to the new Kenwood as an upgrade replacement for the TM-D710. I am not banking on it for sats, but the Yaesu FTX-1F looks like a banger for FM and linear sats.
@digital.rancher Good points 👍
Did you notice from Icom Japan when the 2730B was announced there was also mention of a 2730DB model? B version was 20w and DB was 50w.
Depending upon firmware there might be a user adjustment for the mid power range. On cost with the Yaesu you don't have the expense of the recorder. I personally am using a ICOM 2720 to do satellite because I already had it when I started looking into doing satellites. Thanks for the video. 73
Hey Jeff! It would be great if Yaesu provided some power option via firmware. I'm don't recall a situation where that has happened in the past but it very well could have. Good point on the recorder. You can pick up a no-name recorder for $20 or many folks may be able to use a spare phone, etc. it's good to have options that may fit an individual's circumstance. Thanks for watching and commenting! 73
Great show and set.
Hey Coolie! I thought it was fun - shake it up a little! Thank you for watching! 73
Great job with this! I'm so curious about the 1F.
Thanks Mike! Yes, I can't wait for the 1F! Thanks for checking it out and commenting! 73
thanks, terrific video great comparation nice job 73 from kb2uew
you very clear in recommendations for low power fantastic criteria
I am glad it was useful. Thanks for watching and commenting! 73
Thanks for the insight, Rob. I was wondering what the extra ~$100 got you on the Yaesu. Is the voice recorder noticeably less than an antenna?
Hey 45, I'm glad it was helpful! The Sony voice recorders start around $45. You can pick up a no-name recorder starting at $20. As a product of the 80's, I tend to lean toward the Sony brand. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question! 73!
the icom ic-2730 allows you to use c4fm, dmr and d-star on the cross band repeater function, i don't know if the new yaesu ftm-150 can do it. I have tried several radios with the cross-band repeater capability an only in the icom ic-2730a could i use c4fm and dmr. 73 from Chile CE4UGI
Thanks for sharing, I was unaware of that! Thank you also for watching and commenting, 73!
I just bought the IC-2730A from MTC for $269.99, $292.26 with tax. Black Friday Special. I bought it as a replacement for my IC-207H
Woot! Smokin' deal! Congrats!
I think in Yaesu's mind, you're paying for the digital signal processing that they've been marketing. Because otherwise that price difference just doesn't make sense.
The advantage to the Yaesu is the three-year warranty and possibly the simpler display, which can be nicer for driving.
All good points. I think your point on ASP is spot on. Thanks for watching and commenting! 73
The real question: is this all applicable on the battlestar galactica where you currently reside?
Haha! It's a great ship!
Can the Yaesu FTM300 be used for satellites? I am obviously starting from ground zero and have seen the FTM400 is full duplex and the FTM300 is not.
It is my understanding that the 300 is dual receive but the second receiver is muted on transmit. I have not owned a 300 but that seems to be undisputed. This defeats the purpose for satellites. Is it possible to still use it for satellites, sure. However it's much easier when you have a true full duplex radio that allows you to hear the downlink while you are transmitting.
What about the Alinco DR-735>
I have not used one but I have always liked the feature set of the 735. The radio body is larger than the 2730, as is the head unit. I don't think it would fit in the Eberlestock bag I use. That, of course, is just a personal issue due to the kit I use. It is a $20 or so more than the 2730. I've read it has had some odd issues over its history, microphone and intermod, but I don't know from person experience. If I found a used one at a good price I'd give it a go.
The question is. How the intermod rejection
The FTM 150 is $380 at the dealers this Black Friday weekend; 70 bucks seems like a no-brainer to get the latest tech.
That certainly closes the gap. My preference would be to have a lower mid power rating for sats but for general purpose use, this would be a great radio! Thanks for watching and commenting! 73
The difference is actually $100. That's more like a 25% difference. That's the difference between a $50,000 new car and a $40,000 new car.
@@mediocreman2 Price is not an issue for me. Besides, it's more like a Chevy-Ford thing. Except for a brief foray with Ten-Tec in the eighties, I am a Yaesu OP. Others prefer ICOM. Besides, you have to look at it based on time. You keep a radio 5-7 years (I do) and that hundred bucks comes out to $14-$20 per year. I can waste that kind of money on a cheeseburger, fries and Coke. The added tech sold me: digital noise reduction, SD card slot. Oh, I just purchased a 40K vehicle (Honda) and passed on a 50K vehicle (BMW). I know my Honda will be around in six years.
Hello, I am undecided between 2 devices, can you help me with this? icom 2730E and Yaesu Ftm 150 Asp,,, Which one should I buy?
What is the purpose for buying the radio? Is this your first and only radio? Do you want to install it in your vehicle? Are you looking for a dedicated satellite radio? Tell me more about your use case.
@@digital.rancher I want to use it at home, I will also use it on the desktop, they will do QSO in amateur bands, I was actually going to buy an icom 2730e, but it is said that it makes too much fan noise and it is not suitable for my friends on the computer because they have fans
@@digital.rancher Hello, no it is not my first radio, I only do qso in amateur bands, but it is said that it makes too much fan noise for icom 2730e and is not suitable for home, so should I wait for yaesu ftm150asp?
If this is to be used as a shack radio, and you have the extra $100, I would suggest the FTM-150. It has newer tech. The ASP sounds impressive. If the extra money is a concern I wouldn't hesitate to get the 2730. I don't think the fan is that bad.
thanks
Is the Icom 2730 “Full Duplex” for satellite operation. Like this new Yaesu Radio
Yes. I have been using the 2730 for satellites for years. 90% of the satellite work you see on my channel is with the 2730. Thanks for watching and commenting! 73
Are you useing a potato to record the audio
Ha! Yeah for some reason the audio was below par on this one.
I wanted to watch it to lol
@AxelDeep thanks for trying to check it out! I'll have to go back and rewatch it. I recall it was a bit over driven but I didn't think it was unwatchable. Thanks for the heads up! 73
I know the 2980's power can be easily changed through the service menu, maybe this new one will be able to as well.
Though I like that idea, I don't think most people would go to the trouble. For those dedicated Yaesu fans it may be an option though. Thanks for sharing! 73!
Icom doesn't even give you the parts to mount the control head to the radio. You have to buy that separately. Stupid !! I will go Yaesu any day over Icom at any price..
@@clems6989 It's great having options and choices. I can't tell you how many mounting brackets I have sitting in boxes. I generally don't use them but for those that do, I understand the importance. Options are good! Thanks for watching and commenting, 73!
Love the news desk
Yeah, I thought it was fun! You need to shake things up sometimes! Thanks for watching and commenting! 73
@ great points on the value of the Icom and the lack of low mid power on the yaesu. Maybe they can add in firmware
Happy thanksgiving -Doc Brad
@bradleybacik I would love to see that - Happy Thanksgiving!
Your audio is muffled
@@ouijim Thanks for the heads up. I may need to re-render.
My god what is wrong with your audio?
It's a bit over driven...
Really, some Chinese manufacturer need to come out with a transceiver designed for satellite work and capture the market.
@@moozoowizard I am surprised it hasn't happened!
😂😂😂😂
And then after 1 month, the power supply blows up.
And then you have to drill holes around to make sure there's some DIY cooling going on 😂
@zenith231 Caveat Emptor!
..Seriously. You can't get hams to use terrestial repeators. Satellites?!?...Missed that "boat", along with packet, slow and high scan tv, etc. In the mid 1990s.
@@robertkeller9828 Repeaters are alive and well here in NTX. Many new hams are interested in satellites. Have you seen the number of ISS SSTV images posted on Twitter during those events? You may be surprised to learn how active some of these niche communities are if you give some of these modes a try. Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope to hear you on the birds some time! 73
ASP stands for Audio Digital Signal Processing it improves audio quality for weak signals:
Yes, correct. That is the definition of the acronym and the marketing description of ASP. How well it actually improves copy of a weak signal is in the ear of the beholder! Thanks for watching, 73!
You look like the President of Space! ✨🫡 🪐🌖☄️✨
