The Edge had a better standby battery life, the issue is you have to disconnect the controller from the Edge. The controller continues to draw power from the tablet.

I was just thinking about the aspect ratio when talking with others about the Edge. It would've benefited so much from having closer to a 16:9 aspect ratio to look better for emulators and cloud gaming. The taller modern phone aspect ratio is fine for strictly touch based games, but not in the other scenarios I mentioned.

    • @farishanafiah8461

Ikr. 16:9 is still the golden standard for mass media consumption. That's why I'm struggling to see the benefit of having a taller screen like 16:10 or 3:2. Some people argue about having more space, but what's the matter of owning a rotating monitor.

@@SomeGadgetGuy I agree. I played Apex Legends Mobile (RIP) and the game felt cramped compared to the PC version. I found my fingers tripping over some of the touch layout. With a slightly taller screen, I think it would have felt better.

I just dont understand why aspect ratios keep changing. 16:9 is a weird ratio, but it was standard, meaning everyone knew exactly what 720p vs 1080p was, and approximately how sharp an image would look on such a screen. And 16:9 was/is fine for most media, from games to movies to photo albums.
All of a sudden company x introduces their new screen at 35:21 with a resolution of 75e, and Im left frustrated that I learned this whole other numeric convention.

Marketing and lazy reviewing? You have a whole army of tech sycophants who really don't USE tech, and spend most of their time "critiquing" really superficial stuff. So those folks influence other to get pissy about things like bezels (which are practical) and the LOOK of a phone. Then you get marketing departments saying things like "consumers like bigger screens", so they want the bigger diagonal number, but the device still needs to be somewhat pocketable. A skinnier aspect ratio makes for less overall surface area, and they still can say "SEVEN INCH DISPLAY! WOW!"
It's all a shell game of consumer perception.

The whole idea of a separate controller attached to a tablet makes lots of sense and gives amazing versatility to the device. But Razer has to improve certain things. The tablet must be at 7"+ inches (8'' like the PS portal would be amazing) otherwise as many viewers said, you can use your phone instead. In that size there is a valid reason to use the Razer instead of your phone and also to use the tablet for other content consumption. It would make perfect sense and I would buy one tomorrow as with one purchase I would have a tablet, a gaming console and a controller to use with my phone when I don't wanna carry the edge around.

  • @ElWrobel
    @ElWrobel Год назад +2

While I'm all for android gaming, this device doesn't make any sense. The main draw of mobile games is you can have them on you at ALL times, unless you're not carrying your phone most of the time, they come in handy when there's a sudden wait or anticipated one, but not long enough to actually plan for it. That's when you whip out your phone and start hacking aliens in XCOM 2.
But this is a little too large to carry on you all the time, even if smaller than the deck, costs as much, offers considerably less. The size difference is not enough to make it feasible for places where deck wouldn't be. Deck is just fine for travelling, great for vacations and for playing in any place around the house, android is great for gaming whenever you've got time to spare. I travel with my Deck pretty much every day, never considered it to be a burden, you just need a bag that'll fit it comfortably.
There's only two use cases where it would be preferable, If you just want to play the games that were ported or native to android and if you're emulating retro consoles. Pretty much all the ports are great, apart from Civ VI and emulating retro consoles isn't demanding enough to need the power of SD. Personally, I don't consider streaming to be an alternative to running locally, even if it is great and got a lot better over the years.

In my Opinion the razer edge is fine. If you are an android user, just get the Razer Kishi v2 controller byitself without the "tablet", or the backbone version (which I think Backbone manufacturs the razer one too, the v1 was made by someone else. They are almost* Identical.) It cost $100, and its great for that price. I currently am using it with my Z Fold and with Moonlight/Steam remote play(steam link) and emulation on my phone I'm debating if I even want the steam deck. And if battery is a concern, if your carrying the controller, you can def carry a small battery bank. Downside is you would need a beefy PC that can push 1440p 120 fps(which most modern flagship phone screens support) streaming or a paid service, and also good 5g or a wifi6 connection, which I get alot of people may not have access to in their location. and the headphone jack is exclusive to the pro version which is exclusive to the edge version...

I like that it's lighter than the Steam Deck. Technologically the Steam Deck is superior but it's definitely for home use. When I'm traveling on a plane or a bus? I want the Razer Edge. The Razer Edge, as far as I can see, still has more RAM and compute power than most similar Android Tablets on the market in a similar price range. I just want it to be able to play things like Motorsport Manager 3 or Real Racing 3. Will it? I don't know yet. I will test it on mine soon.

I really dont mind 16:9 on the mobile platform. Most mobile games fit that ratio just fine and most android emulators have a setting for the aspect ratio. Something like the tab s8 plus is such an awesome tablet for gaming.
Furthermore, that leads more into the second question, for me atleast I really would have loved for google to make an all-round gaming ecosystem between Stadia and really fleshing out the playstore. Having something where you can cloud game those beefy triple A's at 1080p 60hz or higher and then sink your teeth into more awesome indie titles natively via playstore rounding things out. Also with emulation on android hitting strides in the 6th gen of consoles and every handheld in history. The Android platform has so much potential. A nice switch like android hybrid console with a telescopic controller for on the go and a dock station for big screen fun could have been more compelling than something like a Steam Deck if priced and marketed appropriately

So, if you have anything older than the S10 series, then the Edge may be for you. The S10 can do most of what the edge can do. S20 and above can do what the edge can do. So, if you have an S20 or later, I do not see why you need the edge. Unless you just want a bigger screen. Both are made for the primary focus on gaming. Anything else is just a by product. With that being said, the Steam Deck wins hands down. I can play Android games on steam Deck but I can't play full fledged console games on an Android device. Best I can do is use emulation but that can only reach as far as PS2 titles with the user of AetherSX2. I'm using that emulator right now with my ROG Phone 2 but everyday, I wish there was a PS3 emulator that works properly with Android phones. It's plenty powerful enough to run at 1080p 60fps

The Kishi controller is the reason I didn't buy another Moto Gamepad mod. I don't need the Edge because I have 9 phones but for an average user having a secondary small device for listening music, chatting, Instagram and of course gaming home does makes sense. The Deck is more like a gaming laptop replacement paired with a Laptop shell.

The problem with the Razer edge is that such a device is not needed. You can get very similar experience just by buying a controller (like razer kishi or backbone) for your phone, and the idea behind cloud gaming is that you don't need to buy more hardware just to play games. There aren't many good games which are native to android.
The deck on the other hand gives you access to the largest gaming community. With access to quality AAA experience on the go. The experience of playing a game on the Deck is very different from playing on laptop or desktop. Also the steam community is great, you will find old 10+ years old title that someone create a controller profile so you can enjoy it on the deck, and these games usually sips power as they are designed for much older generation of hardware.
