I have owned 50 motorcycles, ventured everywhere, strapped up in near hurricane winds, bitter cold and oh yea commuted to work. I live in the northeast where winter can be arctic and summer sahara. Riding pure street bikes I have encountered dirt roads and wondered where they ended, I wonder no more, with my camera and AT DCT I have total confidence to Captain Kirk it and venture where no man has gone before, you should see the look on the dirt bike riders when a 260 lb man on this beast beep beep to pass on a trail 🤣. I can ride all day on the AT and the fatigue is minimal, if you love adventure don't hesitate, get one you wont regret it. The only other bike I would consider is a GS but you wont find a dealer or parts like you will on a honda. THIS IS THE BEST RIDE I HAVE EVER OWNED!
Jeremey, Your best video yet! Like all the facts you kept giving, your specs, bike travel gas weight, etc. Keep designing America's greatest ADV parts and continue to produce great Great Videos. Thank You
simply guys its the best AT sand review i have watched. more than expected explanations, great scenery, and addictive exhaust sound. waiting for the water AT review. 👍
Wonderful production, excellent quality. I ride the new Honda XRE 300 abs 2022 in Colombia (same used by police/military in Brasil and Colombia). Great bike for off road considering its a dual purpose. Kinda like a mini Africa Twin. The skills shows in the video here are incredible. Thanks.
I appreciate the aspects you covered on this video. You addressed points I have not seen in other video reviews. Your height to the bike and the suspension travel/compression were especially interesting to me. Thanks!
My experience with the standard 2017 Africa Twin (manual transmission). The Honda Touring windshield works well - better than the OK stock screen. In Winter you really notice the taller Honda brand Touring windshield. The only thing with this Touring windshield is you do get side wind on your arms. IMO - *The engine power is plenty...* at least for me in the city & short highway use (who want to ride the highway and miss great sights -take the back roads). I rarely need to use 5th gear and 6th gear get used once a month. IMO - The side stand on the Africa Twin works well. One of the best I have used. In dirt & muddy conditions it has never not worked. Sand?? I have not used the bike in but I think the stock side stand would work - it has a wide footprint. IMO - The tires are fine for the road & OK for light off road. If you will ride off road medium to hard I would highly recommend the Honda CRF250L or CRF450L. The Africa Twin is too heavy for medium to hard off road use ****unless you're an expert.**** I have own BMWs GS650Fs & BMW 1150 plus other bikes and the Honda Africa Twin is one of the best bikes I have owned (stable, great engine, comfortable, nice looks). In reliability the Africa Twin IS the best.
Great video! I have yet to take mine in the deep sand but I know I'll be there this summer. We'll see how I do! I've finally managed to "master" (to me) my DRZ in deep sand. We'll see if I can adapt that to the larger bike.
I have a '22 standard and have your skid plate and getting the foot pegs and brake lever extender shipped from you any day now. I'm in Tacoma and want to know where you filmed this please. In WA? I need to practice sand cuz I'm doing the CABDR in six weeks on my AT. Excellent video and thanks for everything!
Great review I have been waiting for something like this as I have a lot of sand where I am and I Just bought an Africa Twin. Coming off Dirtbikes on to my first ADV it will be interesting getting used to the suspension and weight of the Africa Twin compared to my 450 I look forward to more reviews and tests.
Excellent video guys, Keep up the great work,. We cant wait to see what all you guys end up doing with this bike, I am sure it will be a treat. Thanks again and have a blessed week.
I saw this again today after many months , excellent video and awesome riding skills. You should put out some training videos too... you’ve got a way of handling this big Adv like an enduro. :) All the best from India.
Thanks for this. One of the most helpful AT vids I've seen. I'm in Florida, and although I haven't had my CRF1000 out in the sugar yet, as we all know the "A" in "Florida" stands for "sAnd"! Or something.
+K-Man S we've ridden the R1200 oil and water cooled as well as the KTM 950 and 1190 in the deep sand, but not the 1290. Over all all these bikes are big and heavy, therefore the principals for riding deep sand remain the same. They're all quite large and in our experience, not one is significantly better than the other. Essentially these large bikes were not designed specifically for this type of riding; it's like comparing them to riding in deep snow. But we're happy with the capabilities of what the Africa Twin can do!
Another great review thanks guy. I'm personally still in research mode about getting an AT and the shift from my CRF 250L seems too big for my skill level short legs. I know the AT comes with a short seat option that takes it down to 820mm but I haven't sat on one yet. Keep up the reviews and if there are any funny (oops lets not do that again) out-takes include them, sometimes the best lessons learned are the ones from mistakes :) Cheers
It's clear and known that The AT is no doubt off-road biased more than tourer..born like that..its a big dirt bike..so it will shine in this terrain..so if feel that you lean more of off then its better go the Honda..nice video..
great video and skills...I have tried to do some dunes in Tunisia with this 300 kg bike and honestly if you stop or fall in sands a couple of time better leave there the bike if you ride alone :-)
*Note* - this is a repost. My experience with the standard 2017 Africa Twin (manual transmission). The Honda Touring windshield works well - better than the OK stock screen. In Winter you really notice the taller Honda brand Touring windshield. The only thing with this Touring windshield is you do get side wind on your arms. When in sand [and mud too IMO] try putting a Karoo 3 on the rear [not the front] and what ever you favorite knobs are on the front. IMO the karoo 3 is pretty amazing in soft stuff, also they last pretty well too, though as always hard rocky terrain will beat them up more quickly.
What's wrong with these bike companies and lack of suspension? Seems every new motorcycle has a lack in suspension and this bike is not one Im gonna buy due to it looks extremely soft and was hoping they would have known better being a 500 lbs adventure. Nice review!
I have xr650L it has 11 in. of travel front and back so if I lower it 1 1/2 inch I ll still have 9in. what do you think? I am not sure what else it will alter ? I am 5 10 and I don t like the bike being 37 inch hi . I would sell it if there was a 500cc africa twin weighing under 400lbs
Hey man ultimately it is a compromise as some many things are, lots of travel will save you when riding aggressively off road, but when slow and technical, and you need to dab or put your foot down, your more likely to fall as your too far leaned over as short, BUT you know that, I (Jeremy who is riding) to am 5'10" and understand. that said I would always prefer more travel. Sad reality is due to many factors we will not likely see that ideal bike your define as 500CC weighing under 400, then again maybe I may be wrong and it get to see a concept next year...
Great. Now everyone is an expert and is going to jump on the “suspension is too soft” bandwagon...as though they are ever going to ride a fucking liter bike in the sand like this guy did. Face it, 99% of the people that would buy a bike like this will never experience anything more than a hard-pack touring trail. The suspension is just fine for what they will use it for.
I WILL! Heck I take my Vstrom out in the sand (utterly MISERABLE!) So for SURE something weighing less (maybe?) and having 21" front and the marketing claims of the 790r? Is IMMEDIATELY going right out into the sand! That is IF I buy it which is entirely predicated on them not lying AND not gouging the hell out of the price...
No. The back is really to soft and the front dives to easy... and i have never bin in the dirt. Bumps on the road and cornering is also a problem. Next week i'm getting progressive springs 20mm+ that should help a lot...
That's a good question, and in this case there wasn't any specific reason. With that said obviously not everyone is going to ride with gear loading them down on every off road trip, but that is something for us to consider on these kinds of trips. Would have like to hear a report on how the bike performs loaded up with gear?
I jus bought a 2018 twin and I love it, however i notice everything you saying about the suspension. I need solutions , its going to get worse as I gear the bike up with weight .
In regards to Adventure Touring bike, suspension is always a large challenge. One of the significant advantages or easiest return on investment would be heavier Springs to allow the valving to stay up in the stroke. A caution though this is an arena where you could spend a lot of money for very little return. Start with one step don't make a lot of changes at once. Make changes one at a time so you can see if the changes you have made change the bike in the way you desired. If you still don't like the feel of the suspension you can make additional modifications. Be aware that the stiffer you make your suspension, you are going to loose comfort when riding on the street.
Man I hope Yamaha manufactures the T7 Tenere that's been showcased in the international shows. I'm sure it would be around 100 pounds lighter, use the same engine configuration as the AT, and provide more than enough power to rail through these conditions with ease.
It probably averages mid 40 miles per gallon and not difficult to see it reach 50mpg. But of course it depends on your riding style or if you are in sand!
It's interesting you say "everyone loves it and Honda knows it." I feel they missed a golden opportunity with it. Last to the game with everyone out there they put too much focus on off road. Adventure tourers are road bikes, built for comfort over long distances with great handling, occasional dirt road to make us feel invincible. A 1200 With prop drive, bigger tank doing it better than the rest would have been the wise choice.
That is what everyone else is building: too big, too heavy, too complicated. Honda chose smaller, lighter, with real dirt chops as long as you don’t go too fast. A great bike that most will be really happy with. I am.
Great bike and video but if your going to ride that hard off road get a dual purpose or light bike stop trying to change the Africa twin remember most buyers will go down a dirt road once in a while
Cant argue with your logic, some of us like to push the fat bikes. it is amazing what the larger bike will actually do. not disagreeing with you. just trying to explain ourselves.
Fantastic Production Jeremy! Your team is killing it. :59 to 1:07 is my favorite shot! Nice work AltRider... neat machine. And I LOVE my RS4 Check it out: ruclips.net/video/4twxlHRby3k/видео.html - Kyle
If only she were 100llbs lighter ...if only...fact is I would in a HEARTBEAT give up 35hp and however many cc's to keep the weight way down! 65hp 300llb twin could be just utterly phenomenal ! I will buy right now a new well executed model that gives me even 350 wet weight! Course I want 70hp in that case! And if it has tuning fork graphics? And a "T" and and a "7" in the model designation? Will all be according to plan then in 2019 sometime...we hope
Dream on... the ktm790 adventure r is coming first and still no numbers yet on weight. I can't see yamaha beating ktm at this. Maybe more reliable but don't expect it to be lighter and cheaper.
And as far as price? Honda priced their CRF450L at least a thousand bucks lower than KTM 500 dual sport....So of course Yamaha could do the same thing with their 700...I dont care I hope they all get in a big war to make lightest best cheapest 700class adventure twins ...I hope Honda and Husky , Suzuki and Kawasaki all knock themselves out ...it is past time!
@@chrisredfield3240 Apparently in the weight department both bikes are identical at 450ish llbs with gas oil coolant etc .......that is IF you believe KTM claiming that what they mean by "dry weight" is simply sans fuel ...historically however "dry weight" has been abused to the point of not counting battery, coolant, engine oil etc etc ...or 70 lbs total according to Wikipedia search "motorcycle dry weight" ...Yamaha is just sticking with "curb weight"...personally I can not help but suspect that KTM's use of "dry weight" does not entail simply no gas intank!?!? Or else why would they not just SAY "without fuel"? Because they KNOW what any suspicious person has the right to suspect...no? I personally have done MANY comments regarding this and KTM officials have not responded a single time? REALLY? I would think they'd want to clear it up if they are being upright and it really is JUST GAS or not. For this reason I anticipate the KTM is going to outweigh the Yamaha finally...maybe by 30ish pounds would not surprise me....they may be banking on using spin surrounding the fuel being low slung and will claim it's position cancels out additional weight ....marketing types can be incredibly deceptive in terms and claims. find out soon enough IF it really shows up this "spring" ("spring"? What? As in first test bikes arrive at key publications late May? Or when bikes actually appear in showrooms in the US??

Thanks I am glad you enjoyed it. We do not get the XRE300 here in the States, just the CRF300, it looks like a fun little bike.
No one thumbs down... for a reason... this was amazing!
Appreciate it!
I appreciate the aspects you covered on this video. You addressed points I have not seen in other video reviews. Your height to the bike and the suspension travel/compression were especially interesting to me. Thanks!

Awesome! Thanks for the kind words. We're always exploring ways to bring more value to our videos, something we can look at.
Awesome video,i',ve learned many like uve done good off road I've never ever seen in full sand off-road hats off
All questions answered! Thanks a lot

I was hoping to get a "read" on the automatic version, did the test bike have this option?your opinion on the auto?
Great test. Have you done anything similar with the KTM 1290SA? Similar weight machines. How is it in the sand?
+K-Man S we've ridden the R1200 oil and water cooled as well as the KTM 950 and 1190 in the deep sand, but not the 1290. which one? ktm 1090? I agree.
Wild One noooo I Love Honda Africa Twin, you can see in my videos :). By the way and KTM 1090 its not bad bike too.
Well Done! Subscribed! Can't wait to see more Africa Twin videos!

Cool video. Here's an idea: load the bike with 50-80 pounds of luggage like you would in a road trip and test that. Thanks!
I love Africatwin DCT!

Hi , how much pressure tyres must get low to sand ?????
nice job i cant wait for mine this spring
liked & subscribed. Cool video. What an amazing bike. It's on my wanted list
Lindo vídeo. E moto fantástica, meu sonho é ter uma.
Did you have traction control turned off for the sand
Always! 😎

Any reason why you didn't test with an Adv load (camping gear, extra fuel, water etc..)
That's a good question, and in this case there wasn't any specific reason. With that said obviously not everyone is going to ride with gear loading them down on every off road trip, but that is something for us to consider on these kinds of trips.
Would have like to hear a report on how the bike performs loaded up with gear?
Camera work is great
Awesome we try to be deliberate about our filming not easy so thanks for taking the time to say so.
Who's seat are you using?
Nice video!
Eric, the seat is from Seat Concepts. www.seatconcepts.com/store/products#!/~/search/keywords=africa twin&offset=0&sort=relevance
Thank you
How much longer before we get the crash bars?
As I see, there is too soft rear susension. How to ride AT with luggage or assenger?
what seat was that?????? did you go 1.5 inch risers?
Which cam you have took the shoots?
I jus bought a 2018 twin and I love it, however i notice everything you saying about the suspension. I need solutions , its going to get worse as I gear the bike up with weight .

How does this bike do with a 5 gallon tank?In terms of distance?
It probably averages mid 40 miles per gallon and not difficult to see it reach 50mpg. But of course it depends on your riding style or if you are in sand!
very good review, straight forward, informed, honest and quickly to the point ...subscribe me thinks
Glad you liked it Paul! Welcome to our page!

Thanks!
Very informative video 👍🏼
Very inspiring, thanks for sharing.
Can we have a 8 hour video of this 😍
Glad you like it!
Nice output
Glad you like it!
Well put together
Top! Excellent!
how about a list of mods so we know what you're talking about.
270* crank? Cross plane sound from Honda? 👍🤩
Awesome! I'm subscribing!
Thanks - great to hear the feedback - keep riding!
Impressive video
Honda vive! Sonho de moto.
Merci pour le vidéo très très belle moto
Good review.
What is the tier type you uesd in this video?
I believe they were Maxxcross Desert IT tires.
Not to take anything away but that is some moist sand alot better traction than in dry.
That's true, its not super loose sand...
Who's exhaust are you using?
We're running a Yoshimura: www.yoshimura-rd.com/
Excellent. Thanks!
Is yours manual or DCT?
Manual, always!
I love Africa twin
I have the Rally. But this bike is beast!
Rally =350 lbs
Africa =540lbs
Africa Heavier so sucks in the dunes
Just wow
Glad you enjoy!

Dream on... the ktm790 adventure r is coming first and still no numbers yet on weight. I can't see yamaha beating ktm at this. Maybe more reliable but don't expect it to be lighter and cheaper.
@@chrisredfield3240 I can see Yamaha deliver pretty much on everything but the KTMs typical hight horse power
