I'm a teacher. I think people don't like to hear us complain because 1) We work in a setting that is familiar to them at a time when they perceived that they were powerless and teachers had the power. 2) We complain about our students which are essentially their children, and they get offended because we are asking for accountability for the children and essentially for them. 3) They have NO EARTHLY IDEA of how education has changed. I have seen it change since the beginning of my career in the 1990s, through the aughts, teens, and now roaring 20s. 4) Parenting has also gotten harder, and they can't empathize or sympathize.5) We are still living in the aftermath of the pandemic. There are gaps academically and socially/ behaviorally. But administration still has expectations of pre-covid school/world.
We don't want to hear you complain because a teacher is one of those professions you are just that. Once a doctor, always a doctor. Like it should be in your blood. Not saying you aren't tired but it's just in your heart. I see more of the younger generations (24-35yr olds) complaining about teaching then 40 and older
Teachers spend a lot of time w ppls kids and that’s a lot of work and pressure that ppl don’t account for. Teachers are a big part of shaping kids lives.
I am so grateful that they mentioned the younger kids. Normally, the preschool, younger grades and their teachers are not really talked about as much in conversation like this. I have been a preschool teacher for 10years now. It is not a easy job, but I enjoy every second of it. Thank you for sharing as teachers. 💜
Teacher kryptonite is finding out some shady crap has been going on in a kids home but you just can't put your finger on the issue to make something happen/be better
Fall break and 8 weeks in the summer is nice. At my school we have a week for thanksgiving, 2 weeks for winter break (and we work up to a few days before Christmas, and we only get about 4 and a half weeks for summer. Oh, and don’t have kids at home. What break?! I have been teaching for 10 years, and I’m truly in love with passing on knowledge to the youth, but it’s not for the weak. Love all my teachers out there. I appreciate each of you. Keep showing up for your students as much as you can ❤
teachers get flack for complaining because, like nurses, social workers, caregivers, etc. people view you guys as these ''saintly'' infinite patience, impeccable people skills. and they think that '' it takes a special person'' to do these jobs, therefore you cant complain because '' you are one of those ''amazing'' people. when reality is: no, we are all human, and no, not everyone in these jobs are built for it, and those who are built for it and do love it, still have bad, or stressful times, because that is life dealing with people. period.
As a woman with 3 children ages 4,5, and 6. I shall pray for you teachers when i send them to school. Chile i cant do it mama is stressed and depressed, yall are the real saints dont ever underestimate a human with the gaull to say what they thinking and do what they feel in the moment yet too small to understand when they've offended you. Im in here trying to teach phonics and im looosing it baby
Being a teacher is a tough profession to have . I have been teaching for a long time, but it seems that I have been teaching for a hundred years. Look some of the things that Non-Teacher need to know is that we have to be ON at all times. There are many things that happen in a day in one class and we have many students to take care of (some of us have had up to 160 students per year). Not only are you teaching the material that you studied, but you have to wear many hats. You are a teacher, a counselor, a psychologist, someone that cleans after them and more important an example. The hats we have to wear are many and they keep increasing. Now, you also have to remember that even though we have to wear all of these hats, we do not get paid enough. Everyone thinks that we make so much money, well the salary schedule for the district that I work at can be found on line. We only get paid once a month and some of that money goes into school supplies. There is not enough time in the day and not enough money and to top it all of, students do not respect teachers. If I had the respect from students and parents, a little more money and maybe less hats to wear, maybe I could have a life outside of school. Do not get me wrong, I love teaching. The most wonderful thing about teaching is when kids call your name on campus as you are walking to your class, or when they come visit when you no longer are their teacher. Even better is when they get in contact with you after graduation letting you know that you made a difference. The best thing is when former students (4 years after) graduating contact you and tell you that they are going to become a teacher as well. Teaching is a calling for me and it was because of one of my former teachers, he became an example and will always be my role model. Non-Teacher, we love the profession, but you need to know that it is one of the hardest professions that is in existence. Please teach your kids that Respect is important, not just for their teachers, but to treat everyone with respect. We need that in the world we live in now! Respect will make our jobs easier.
Something that I found out while becoming an educator and formally being an Infantryman in the Army, is that there is a lot of cross over. Like the walking with a folder. Look busy and you won't be bothered.
I had a parent message me on ClassDojo on a Saturday at 12 pm. I received a nasty note Monday morning from that parent letting me know that the parent sent me a message and they haven't received a response. Like, 👀 what? It is the weekend. First, I am not in my classroom, and second, I am working at my second job. I will get back to you when I am back in my classroom.
Love the video so far, I'm 15 mins in. I am not a public school teacher, however I do homeschool 3 of various ages. Let me tell you, I had NO IDEA!!!! that it was this hard!! I had no idea at the amount of time and dedication that it takes to REALLY teach. I am now very much thankful for teachers. The amount of patience it takes with just my 3 is rough, I could not imagine 20+!!!! That is insane!!! How do you have any sanity left?? lol----- The lesson planning and trying to make it engaging and fun and that's not to mention the different learning styles that you constantly have to adapt to. Thanks for all you do! I am thankful to GOD that I got the opportunity to teach, it made me have a whole new take on learning from when I was growing up and in school.
I about died when you talked about people saying they pay your salaries 😂. I used to work for my local county and rude people used to say that all the time when they got an answer they didn’t like “You know I pay your salary” 🙄. Go take a long walk off a short pier. I don’t know why people feel they can say this to people who are empoyed by the county-I pay taxes too, nutter butter. And for teachers it’s even worse. Like you said, you pay for so much out of your own pocket. You should hand people who say that an itemized bill. 🤭
Try being in the janitorial business and having a secretary, yes a secretary tell you, "why don't you all do your job, we pay you"! Like ma'am just like they pay you! 💯
My daughter is in her 25th year as a paraprofessional, most of them spent in special Ed (behavior disorders). She brings home about $1300 a month! She has very seldom had the same teacher for more than two or three years. When they get a really tough kid, they give that kid to her. She started this job right out of high school! Thankfully, most of her admins have appreciated her because she is so good at what she does but can you imagine taking home $1300 a month after 25 years??
Main problem (in my eyes): Thinking we're heroes or doing a "labor of love" - yes, but also it's actually just a job. Putting it on so high a pedestal means we have no room left to be anything but perfect. Can't complain, can't be flawed, can't be tired, can't put our families/health first. If we're treated like martyrs, we're expected to die for the job.
I didn't know they let students repeat that many times. This is your year kid, first grade or bust 😂 😂 😂 😂 I know what you meant, I swear, I just couldn't help the joke. I loved teaching kinder but my heart is in preschool 😊
7:01 I am a non teacher and Honest Teacher Vibes popped up on my “for you” page and I started watching her and then the podcast starting popping up on my “for you” page so I’ve been binge watching and I love this. It’s opened my eyes to so much, I’m a mom of 3 boys and my 15 and 11 year have been having some problems over the last few years. I even switched schools and I almost feel like it’s worse, if my husband and I weren’t employed full time I’d home school them it’s so bad… I just want my boys to have a successful time at school and instead the teachers are worrying about trying to one up my kids or argue with my my boys and have the worst attitudes. And now my boys just seem to be on their radar and get spoken to for every little thing. My boys are so traumatized from their previous school that they’re always defensive and I’ve told my boys give them a chance and it’s just not working… any pointers?
Ooo if I put an 'Out of Office' message on my email at my old school, I would've gotten CRUCIFIED by my admin. At my new school, my admin are so great, just like Bri's.
As first a paraprofessional and then a school secretary, I was never good at working my contracted hours! I never took my breaks, seldom ate lunch and almost never left on time. When we were working on the master schedule ( I worked in guidance), the director and I would still be there at 7 pm and then take our Excel spreadsheets home with us! After two horrible admin changes and being moved from the high school to preschool, and from Windows to Mac with zero training, I literally had a nervous breakdown and had to retire. Believe it or not, I still miss it!
I began listening to & from you all while driving 4.5 hours to Spokane, WA for the annual Washington Education Association Rep Assembly. I have enjoyed it so much that it is on my radio in my car as well as in my classroom before school, during planning, and after school. :)
I think people just get defensive about teachers complaining because it touches too close to home. everyone has some sort of experince with school and too many that makes them 'experts' algo with the fact the the students we complain about are someone kids or family.
In my county, we have supply lists every semester. It's all consumables, like tissues, and kids get a small amount of EC for it presumably so a few kids don't get a ton of points.
As u said before people quit bosses, not jobs. And the reason I complain is because the problem of poor behaviour is THE PARENTS and society's fault, not mine, and now I got to fix YOUR mistakes.
Most teachers that I know usually get sick over the break because it is like their body keeps going until break and then they can afford to get sick.....
I don't know because I know I couldn't be a teacher. I have 2 kids and honestly don't know how teachers can do a classroom of 30 or more kids . Hats off to all the teachers
Yes, I talk to my boss outside of work hours. Because my job is my passion and my life and I feel with a profession like teaching you should be approachable like a doctor or police officer.
Because teachers on average make more than many others. And when people say "you get summers off" means even unpaid. Most people can't take that amount of leave paid OR unpaid.
My only issue with school supply list is wvery kid buying copy paper and then the school needing more paper half way through the year . Thats 30 kids a class in every class with copy paper like not one piece the relm of it and the school runs out like how ? Thats my only issue other supplies I get
I think the idea of "I pay your salary" comes from the idea that because you're paid by the government, and the government is nominally funded by taxes, that they pay your salary. The response to that idea is: "I pay as much of my salary as you do." Especially because most state tax regimes are very flat. Also, the idea of teachers being superheroes is a kind of barbed compliment. Superheroes aren't strong because of their powers. They just have life on easy mode.
“Indoctrinating your kids” is where teachers use a curriculum that pushes an ideology. It does happen. It’s not the teacher’s fault. BUT there are teachers that are in a mission to Mike kids into THEIR ideology.

I work 5:00am to 11:00 pm everyday 5 days a week, and 8 hours on Saturday.
I fully understand this. I was up at 5 am and went to bed between 12 am and 1am.
i work at an online teaching/tutoring program every sunday, so i listen to it when i get ready *as soon* as it drops

PDs over the summer. There is no "break".
Unless you are paid for that, absolutely not.

Wow.❤
She is the true mvp.
May the Lord continue to bless her.
It’s so sad, she deserves more.
how does she pay her bills
@@jaydel3 She works an after school program with the same kids.

best part of my sunday!
I am in my 25th year of kindergarten. Lol
Bless you!!
Thank you for your service. ❤
You are awesome. I could never do it. I subbed one time in kindergarten and I would never do it again.
I didn't know they let students repeat that many times. This is your year kid, first grade or bust 😂 😂 😂 😂
I know what you meant, I swear, I just couldn't help the joke. I loved teaching kinder but my heart is in preschool 😊

I’m not a teacher but I love these podcasts. Currently I’m looking into becoming a preschool teacher
Not a teacher, but I found y’all somehow and I never miss an episode bc y’all crack me up. I’m so excited to hear what y’all want me to know 😂

Yes, I listen to the podcast during planning. I also listen to it on my way home from work. It helps me decompress.
I think people just get defensive about teachers complaining because it touches too close to home. everyone has some sort of experince with school and too many that makes them 'experts' algo with the fact the the students we complain about are someone kids or family.

This was a good episode.❤ Thanks for the laughs😂
I’ve taught pre-k and kindergarten-- never again.
😂
Not a teacher, but work with someone who is married to one.
Love you guys.
Non teacher from a family of teachers Teaching is looked at like serving … the perception is you chose that career so don’t complain about it now
I love Bri's laughter!!!
7:07 I’d love to share it but afraid my non teacher friends won’t watch
😂
In my county, we have supply lists every semester. It's all consumables, like tissues, and kids get a small amount of EC for it presumably so a few kids don't get a ton of points.
I am not a teacher but I listen to the show while i am cleaning my house
Omg I teach kindergarten and it’s no joke!
Excuse me! Your district gives you money for supplies?
Superhero status came from Covid when parents witnessed teaching.

Yes, I talk to my boss outside of work hours. Because my job is my passion and my life and I feel with a profession like teaching you should be approachable like a doctor or police officer.
I never went to the bathroom at school unless i was on my period. I literally held it all day
Never forget about God. He hasn’t forgotten about you. Let him in.❤Please stop cursing and keeping in the show.
Those parents that are ghosts all year but the first one for every assembly or field trip
I love this episode it’s so funny. I cannot with Bri laugh omg 😂
Because teachers on average make more than many others. And when people say "you get summers off" means even unpaid. Most people can't take that amount of leave paid OR unpaid.
I know a teacher who had to go into counseling because of their principal....
Teachers take their problems and issues home and over those breaks because they care for the kids
It's called teacher lead funds in Florida
Honest question, what is worse to teach kindergartens or 6-8 grade boys?
Do y'all do auditions from teachers? I'm in my 15th year in coaching and I have some stories 😂😂
What do you mean you don’t get paid to cover classes!? You work for free!?
My only issue with school supply list is wvery kid buying copy paper and then the school needing more paper half way through the year . Thats 30 kids a class in every class with copy paper like not one piece the relm of it and the school runs out like how ? Thats my only issue other supplies I get

Yes I chunk it all the time.
Never forget about God. He hasn’t forgotten about you. Let him in.❤Please remember death and life is the power of the tongue. Proverbs 18:21
Y’all please don’t lie and just gradually get your stuff and stress you have to leave and maybe causally walk through hallway talk if you can.😅
