In fact, except in the Spanish Gypsy communities, and in some cases in France and Portugal, not all Gypsies have flamenco roots. The cultural and geographical diversity of this people is vast, and their connection to flamenco is not universal. It is important to remember that the first gypsies arrived in Spain in the mid-15th century, crossing Valencian lands with the permission of King James II, on their way to Santiago. It was not until a few years later that it was definitively established in the country. On the other hand, the first known references to flamenco date back to the 13th century, long before the arrival of the gypsies to the Peninsula. And it is in this context that one of the most beautiful and profound musical traditions originates: a fusion of Andalusian, Sephardic (Jewish) and Moorish influences, whose richness goes back even further in time. To claim that flamenco is exclusively gypsy is not only wrong, but it shows cultural blindness or, worse still, a profound ignorance of the true history of this art. Flamenco is much more than a label: it is an amalgam of peoples, stories, traditions and emotions, which have converged to give it the form and soul that we know today.
