I'm a bit late to the party but great video. Can you calibrate a pre-recorded tape? I'm guessing not but was wondering. Great content and well done. Thanks Mark

Fun video. Just got my CR-7A this week and calling ESL soon. Out of curiosity, what is considered expensive? Is $400-$800 in the ballpark? Thanks for any advice or info!

I just saw this and you probably already sent your CR-7A there but I'll give you my two cents on them.
Having been to ESL a few times I can say they're not cheap but they're good. Depending on what they need to do I would say you're in the ballpark assuming the deck works as designed then work would be limited to a "tune up" without the need to diagnose problems or replacing parts etc.
If it has issues and you tell Jeff about them, he'll likely ask you what you're willing to spend on it and if he thinks it will exceed that amount he will call you and explain about what it will cost to bring it up to proper working specifications and you can take it from there.
I brought my Nakamichi 680ZX that stopped working to ESL and made the mistake of telling Jeff over the phone "do what needs to be done." It ended up costing $2,600. I damm near fainted when I went to pick it up but in all honesty had no choice if I wanted it to work at all. Here it is over 10 years later and it still runs fine.
Just as an FYI I bought my CR -7A from Jeff as he had some brand new Nakamichi factory rejects at the time. It works fine as well and I actually like it over the 680ZX. I rotate the two every few months.
Bottom line, they're the only ones I trust for servicing Nakamichi tape decks. I'm fairly fortunate in that I can drive there in about two hours so I don't need to worry about shipping. I wish you the best of success on the CR-7A. It is a great cassette deck.
