Super happy you did a video on new layouts. (been lurking on your channel this last year or so) I swapped from QWERTY to Colemak in march this year (formerly ~120wpm on QWERTY, now just reaching 110 after about 4 months) The new layout is intuitive now, which has taken a long time and lots of mental effort. The hardest part of the transition i found was the huge amount more mental effort it takes to type with a new layout while trying to work 9 to 5 - once i went cold turkey i genuinely felt like i was more tired at the end of the day and i was avoiding typing more that was strictly needed. That said, there's something about a more optimised/efficent keyboard layout that is just nicer to type on - e.g. the increase in the number of words i can type just on the home row is amazing. If you're only looking for a speed, i think changing layout is a very long term investment and probably isn't where you'll get the biggest 'bang for your time'.
this is AMAZING and very interesting!! I've thought about trying different layouts to improve speed/typing--and this is something I would do, except I'd get discouraged mid-week through and give up and consider myself a failure. thanks for seeing it through and showing us that a new layout isn't necessarily a magic bullet! love your videos!!

What a coincidence! I also switched away from QWERTY about six days ago to Colemak DH. Was averaging 140 on QWERTY, now at about 60 with Colemak! Takes patience to unlearn that muscle memory! Also, I think workman is better suited for ortholinear as the idea is to avoid the center column, and use the bottom row index finger key instead. You should continue with your ortholinear split!
You'll probably be quite happy with the new layout once you get used to it. Switching from Qwerty to something nicer was one of the best decisions I ever made. I'm on Dvorak, but some of the newer layouts seem good too.
Love seeing alt layouts getting some love, I'm not dramatically faster with Dvorak than I am with QWERTY (~145 vs 130 wpm) but Dvorak is just so much more comfortable and fun to type on!
I used keybr to learn colemak, it adds one letter at a time until you know all of them; downside is that you don't type real words. I beat my qwerty speed with colemak in like a month
I also used keybr to learn workman, adding one letter at a time really helps with learning new layouts! To avoid the problem of losing my qwerty fluency, I learnt workman with a different physical layout (ortholinear). Only takes a few minutes to adjust between layouts.

My wpm is like 60 on qwerty and trying a different layout was hell it was 3-6 wpm. Then when I got back to qwerty my wpm was 21. Oops. It eventually got fixed.
I wish you the best of luck in your journey to switch layouts! I swapped to Dvorak a year ago and it took about 4 months for me to surpass my original typing speed (120 wpm). I don't regret switching layouts as my accuracy improved greatly from 97% to 99% (doesn't seem like much but it really makes a difference). I think your typing speed will definitely get better as time goes on with workman because you'll likely be a lot more accurate (you have experience with typing already and now you can focus a lot more on accuracy as well).
As someone with 80wpm in qwerty, i was just thinking about switching to workman as it seemed more logical too, you helped me move another step :), definitely want to see another 30 days of sheer hardwork and progress!!

Hi, wanted to chime in as a madman who actually swapped to Dvorak in June 2020. I got back to my old typing speed between 1 and 2 months after starting. Most people take longer to fully adapt but if you practice a lot you can probably do it in under a month. My WPM didn't change all that much. I've never been that fast, around 105 WPM since most of my time typing is spent either coding or gaming so I don't get much standard practice. Something which did improve was comfort. Dvorak also puts the most common letters on home row and I've had no hand cramps since I switched over.
Also your options for keycaps are DRASTICALLY limited if you actually want the letter in the right places regardless of what alternative layout you use.
This is anecdotal but I am still throwing it out there: My top speed on QWERTY was 130 WPM and I switched to Colemak (cold turkey switch). I finished my first month averaging around 55 WPM, a month later I was averaging around 80 and I am sitting at ~115 WPM right now, 79 days after starting. To be honest, I think I would never switch back to QWERTY even if I never reached 130 again on Colemak. The typing on a layout that actually makes sense is so much more comfortable. You need to keep in mind tho that most of the benefits go away if you are going to use it for some other language since Colemak layout is based on frequency of letters in the most often used English words. For example when I switch back to my native language (one of the slavic languages) I have to do the drunk dance on the keyboard again and I am reminded how bad QWERTY was.
I went from 40 to 3 just because of a new layout and that is really really frustrating. And moreover I tried to do that by switching to an Ergodox. I can't imagine how it is from 130, not mentioning that you recently played with switched keyboards. You may have spent so many time just practicing that I wonder how you do for your regular job meanwhile. Really inspiring video, thanks!
130 wpm is so insane! I don't even know if I can increase my speed from 60 to 70. Reading all these comments saying they type with ""only"" 80, 90, 100 makes me a little envious, but props to you, guys!
In my first week of learning davorak i got 70 average with quite high accuracy, i love how accurate and fast i now can be by taking the time before to fix my mistakes and get comfortable with making little to no errors. Speed comes with time. And accuracy. Edit..... my first day i achieved a max of 6 to 9 but after that every single day i was noticing an increase and even to this day but progress is not linear...
Dvorak is why I ended up with my das keyboard 4 ultimate. So the keys are correct no matter which layout is enabled :) There is no wrong alternative layout. Just takes experimenting to find a personal preference. Most of them work out better comfort wise long term over qwerty

I tried workman and I'm also at 30 wpm but I did some chances to the lower keys, I couldn't wrap my head around the new C and V positions were so I just move them and that helped me a lot, this made me feel like workam and qwerty had a child and I can even write on qwerty without a struggle and come back to workman easily
Imagine a layout that changes based in your language and the words you type. It would be a little frustrating at the beginning, but when the layout optimizes itself to your typing, that could be the endgame typing experience 🤔
what a timing for the video. i was also trying out new layouts, switching out qwerty for dvorak but then i found out colemark was better so now i am starting over on colemark. i don't know if its because i switched twice but switching to colemark felt harder than switching to dvorak and i think qwerty is starting to take a hit in accuracy and speed
Honestly, the constant use of pinkies for shift, alt, and control seem like they'd take a lot of the "using pinkies less" benefit away. I'm trying out home row mods right now, and after like an hour I'm definitely slower but it feels so good on my battered hands. That would be a cool video if you wanted to try that
I’m sticking to what I’m used to. Learning a new layout seems fun but when I get back to my normal keyboard I would’ve probably forgot how to use it and my 100 WPM on my regular keyboard would turn into 10 WPM.
Workman hah. I remember trying it then decided to use colemak instead, but forget exactly why, then i click the link -C and V shortcuts are slightly shifted to the right and needs a little getting used to. -Left ring finger has slightly higher load compared to QWERTY, Dvorak, and Colemak." Yeah, that's why I stick with Colemak. Learning a new layout isn't for speed for me, but it's mainly just for my finger health and my sanity. Typing on qwerty after learning colemak just feels dumb. With colemak on other hand, it's kinda like dancing on the keyboard with your finger.

Yes please do a video of 30 days with Workman!
The things RUclips recommends for me.
Oh well, now I know about the keyboard typists
what a timing for the video. i was also trying out new layouts, switching out qwerty for dvorak but then i found out colemark was better so now i am starting over on colemark. i don't know if its because i switched twice but switching to colemark felt harder than switching to dvorak and i think qwerty is starting to take a hit in accuracy and speed
Honestly, the constant use of pinkies for shift, alt, and control seem like they'd take a lot of the "using pinkies less" benefit away. I'm trying out home row mods right now, and after like an hour I'm definitely slower but it feels so good on my battered hands. That would be a cool video if you wanted to try that
go for it, mean while I am learning how to make my own keyboards
I'm a new suscriber and i love your vids ❤️
i also learning a new keyboard layout,i am learning colemak-dh from workman. Its been 5 days and its been going great
I’m sticking to what I’m used to. Learning a new layout seems fun but when I get back to my normal keyboard I would’ve probably forgot how to use it and my 100 WPM on my regular keyboard would turn into 10 WPM.
Workman hah. I remember trying it then decided to use colemak instead, but forget exactly why, then i click the link
-C and V shortcuts are slightly shifted to the right and needs a little getting used to.
-Left ring finger has slightly higher load compared to QWERTY, Dvorak, and Colemak."
Yeah, that's why I stick with Colemak. Learning a new layout isn't for speed for me, but it's mainly just for my finger health and my sanity. Typing on qwerty after learning colemak just feels dumb. With colemak on other hand, it's kinda like dancing on the keyboard with your finger.
2 month in, and 100WPM on Colemak!
I just achieved this accomplishment just last week
Love the video btw! I’m getting an MIT ortho layout soon the quarkeys Z40 and I’m going to be learning all over again but it’s not like the workman or Dvorak layouts 🤓
I do not enjoy ortho
@@SwitchandClickOfficial I’m going to find out if I do or don’t 😂
I got the minisub from rain so the staggered option is still alive for me 🤣 🤪 he’s got the plop coming out and it’s less than $50 probably 🦾
QWERTY is a good layout and it's not meant to slow you down most of the top typist use QWERTY and they're blazing fast. It's just the first layout... that's it. Also use which layout you like. I like QWERTY because it's the most common and I don't have to change someone else's layout for mine.
Haha very timely. I was starting practicing colemak earlier today
DASH looks better than than WASD
