  • In this week's episode of the Angie Martinez IRL Podcast, Angie sits down with rapper, singer, and songwriter Coi Leray.
Coi Leray opens up about her childhood marked by her parents' separation to her rise as a music sensation.
She shares the impact of her parents' separation by shedding light on her father, Benzino, artist and founder of the Source Magazine, and her mother, his teenage love who struggled to raise four kids on her own after the split.
At 16, Coi made a bold move, leaving home, quitting school, and taking on a full-time job. This pivotal decision laid the foundation for her incredible work ethic, which has propelled her to success in the music industry.
However, after the release and success of her hit song "No More Parties," Coi Leray faced the harsh realities of the world. It was the first time that the typically confident Coi found herself questioning her worth. She grappled with doubts, asking herself if she was truly good enough, if her voice resonated, if her appearance matched societal standards, and well… whether she resembled “a boy.”
However, her confidence still rules. Coi is on an ongoing journey to silence the noise and discover genuine joy. With the guidance of a life coach, the support of her amazing friends, and a strong focus on her faith, she's actively learning to filter out negativity and embrace the positive aspects of her life.
Coi Leray is not just an artist. She’s a walking brand, and as we dare say… an icon in the making?! Don’t miss this episode!

It wasn't backlash, she needed to get away from all that bullshit and just be herself. No doubt in my mind she listened to someone in or not in her camp that gave a damn to tell her about how she was looking and acting. I thought she was trash in the beginning... She ain't no top female rapper for me but she has finally grown on me once she left the so called bad girl image alone and focused on her craft. Totally different young lady now and I like it.....

I like her this is her truth. I’m not sure why her father was so upset she said there were faults in both of her parents. It’s not like she just bashed him the whole time. Plus of course if she’s struggling with her mom, that’s who’s she’s going to be closer to. He needs therapy, some parents find it hard to accept things that them and their children went through and they get mad and wanna say I did this I did that. It’s like ok you were supposed to I’m the child. But the anger shows that there wasn’t any growth. I believe her when she said he’s an angry person, you can see it in his reactions that he’s emotional. I pray they are able to mend their relationship.

What a strong woman very inspiring never giving up and perseverance she gives now to her mom and to herself what her dad never gave them! Her test turned into a testimony! Don’t despise humble beginnings:))

This was a great interview. Coi is soooo transparent. I think it's super healthy and positive for her to be able to speak her truth. She seems poised, has her level of confidence and courage. When she said she felt her dad was supposed to be available and teach her and her siblings about life (21:30) is real.

Angie definitely has that effect on people having them star struck and paralyzed lol. Excellent journalist, authentic and down to earth. She's not messy and never let her status swell her head with the long list of amazing accolades. What I enjoy about her interviews is how comfortable her guests are and she's not about the gossip. She deserves her own television talk show.
