This is the most I've heard Ashanti speak on her personal life. I've always thought that was dope. She took numerous punches to her character before she spoke up. I believe her when she says she knows enough to bury Irv. Love her! She's a class act! She said I speak when I'm good and ready.
I didn't realize Ashanti went through so much verbal abuse. Being young and gullible and being manipulated by a narcissist couldn't have been easy to just "walk away" from. I'm so glad she was able to get away from that situation. I also love the delicacy Angie is conducting this interview.
And what's sad is... when you grow up with that type of disfunction you think it's normal until somebody shows you it's not. Then it's like learning respect, manners and boundaries all over again.
They really dragging her in a perfect world woman wouldn’t deal with married men Irv didn’t move like a married man he approached women everywhere even on the reality show he was after video girls his wife chose to stay with him because she loved and he accepted her as a package deal I think that’s why she stayed with him drugs and affairs destroyed his marriage his wife finally decided to leave because the example she was setting for her kids he was a disrespectful man and he never hid it he ain’t care .
Angie is such an amazing interviewer. I love how laid back she is, and she is not pushy. She chooses her words carefully, and I am sure her cool and calm demeanor makes the artists feel more comfortable when discussing very personal matters. This was truly her calling. Ashanti also did a great job expressing herself in a very real but respectful manner.
Like two friends talking instead of someone with their own agenda with someone else story. She has respect and boundaries and that makes people more comfortable to share with you.
Ashanti has always been a class act and carries herself well. Minds her business and collects her royalties and lives her best life. Always got live for her ❤️
Definitely glad she met Nelly cause whether she knows it or not her being with him took her life in a different direction!! So proud of her and the class act that she has shown even when her named was being tarnished!!!

Angie has a new respect from me!!!!! This interview was an INTERVIEW! No interruption, NO AKWARD moments. Ashanti showed MAJOR growth since every thing was “BANANAS!” 😂😂😂😂 Shes a grown A woman…her parents made her! Irv introduced us to the artist/entertainer Ashanti!
I notice that also especially when she stepped back out with Nelly, Irv wanted him dead, he threatened Nelly to keep her in line that why they were always denying being together, she was slick with Nelly when this interview happen look how she light up whenever she talk about him and look what she said about her personal life they usually ask if she dating Angie didn't ask that but Ashanti said she going to focus on her personal life get married, have kids, slow down, then she pop out with Nelly publicly, she finally admitting to really dating Nelly now she claiming all out right, wearing his chain, his shirt, Irv told her to go to Derrty Ent, on her live recently she had a Derrty Ent hoodie I remember this interview and died laughing, and said she with Derrty Ent, you told her to go, she went.😂😂

I loved how Ashanti chose her words carefully and stayed classy even though nobody would blame her for cussing and dragging that man. She threw her lil shade which is understandable lol but I really like how she kept her composure about this man who has kept insulting and attacking her in the media for years unprovoked. Her last couple interviews and to include this one just made me realize how much a stand up woman she is. She broke many records, she’s gorgeous, talented writer and awesome songstress! I pray for her continued success. I love her movies!!!!! Stay getting a bag Sis!!!
I’m not the biggest Ashanti fan, but I came away from this with a new respect for her. She is classy and poised, and the restraint was the result of growth. Angie always delivers. She has an incredible quality of conducting interviews with empathy and honesty. Bravo ladies.
I love how classy she is. She knows how to tell the truth without having to be nasty. I’m glad she’s happy and not letting no one come inbetween her happiness. Love her ❤️
Hi like how classy she held this interview. Although she talked around the extent of the kind of relationship they had. However, you could read between the lines. It wasn't a relationship it was a situation because he was married with several other girls. So, I get it and she was young too.
I BELIEVE EVERY WORD SHE SAID!!!Hearing #Ashanti talk about how Irv damn near tried to BREAK her. How he belittled her, LIED TO HER and TRIED to make her feel like 💩💩. I'm not surprised. That little yellow man is a piece of work.
Ashanti’s verse on Move On and the idea to put her on the song was genius! I am glad she is setting the record straight! After being so quiet for 20 years! I have even more respect for her for that!
Irv is hurt and I don't think he will never get over her,he really showed the world that he was in love with Ashanti but she wasn't in love with him, it's killing him to sit back and watch her blossom into this beautiful 🌟!!
I don't think he was in love with her. I think he was in love with controlling her. She was young, naive and scared of his control/power and he loved that.
I think that Irv was in love with Ashanti Irv can't get over her. Irv got a taste of his own medicine, got his poetic justice & got his bad karma for all the times he cheated on his wife Deb for when Irv seen Nelly & Ashanti together. Irv need to move on with his life.
I don’t think it was love… control and lust. When you leave ppl, then they want to be all into you. B.S., how many years has it been? Dude needs to move on and go to therapy!
you can see how much she's been through hearing her recount these stories. the rawness of this interview is deep - Ashanti is an ICON and about time we started treating her like one!
When they were talking about Irv and she said “I see a lot of feminine qualities” I giggled at the same time Angie did. That was funny! The fact that Irv is this hurt over 20 years later is wild!
I feel like she deserves so much more credit than what she gets. To accomplish what she did having 4 top 10 records at 1 time. Breaking the Beatles record is unheard of. She's not selling her soul and that's what that industry wants you to do. Good for her.
But could she have done that without Irv lyrics or production is the fact that people won’t admit to …. Even tho Irv a dirtbag he definitely made her career

People forget how commercially successful Ashanti was back then: - World Record for Fastest/Biggest Debut Album for a Female Artist (Billboard and Guinness World Record) - "Foolish" went #1 for 11 weeks and one of the greatest selling songs of all time - 1st solo artist in history to have 2 top spots on Billboard Hot 100 - 1st solo artist in history to have 3 top spots on the Billboard Hot 100 - The World's top selling female artist of 2002 - Billboard Woman of the Year 2002 - 4 #1 Hits on the Billboard Hot 100 (including the songs that Jennifer Lopez stole from and tried to take credit for due to Irv Gotti evil politics) - A profusion of awards including many Bilboard, American Music Awards and a Grammy Etc Ashanti could've continued to have global succes, but the music industry did her wrong plus the federal government when they had investigated Irv Gotti and Murda Inc. Ashanti should've had global stardom longevity like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Britney Spears for the 2000s decade. But Ashanti's first year in the music industry was enough and many artists have not accomplished what she did in their whole career. Funfact: Ashanti was supposed to be a 90s Pop star and was supposed to rival Brandy, Britney Spears and many teenage Pop stars, but she didn't want to be a teenage Pop star and want from label to label. I think she was signed to Bad Boys with Diddy. She also had a full ride scholarship to the prestigious Ivy League Princeton University 😲😲😲 Nonetheless Ashanti is a legend.
I remember calling the radio requesting Happy by Ashanti even after they played Happy few minutes ago. Her debut album was fire, I bought it and course she had other songs after that which was great.

The way Irv talked about ashanti may sound hard and brash. I do believe that Irv could of handle somethings better. However, I believe every word he said about their physical relationship. Irv had the right to tell his side of the story of certain instances. Something about this interview just seems like Ashanti is not telling the whole truth.....
Being a fellow Libra and a fan of Ashanti, I love how vulnerable and mature she has been about this whole situation and I love that Angie created a safe space for her to speak her peace. I also love the fact that even though Irv wronged her on so many levels she still didn’t disrespect him like he did her, and she didn’t air out any negative stuff she’s such an upstanding respectful woman!!!
To all the people asking if they had sex please watch the interview again. It may be hard to believe, but some people aren’t comfortable talking about who they slept with publicly in a crass manor. They had a situation, but she was not his girlfriend. He had a lot of women he dealt with, including her , but their situation was never that deep. To be honest it seems like the situation could have been a HR nightmare due to the power dynamics at play. Plus, the manipulation that was involved was sick.
@@P.Michelle Yup but you say a whole lot as if people didn’t watch it. How was situation a HR nightmare due to power dynamics. Or you mean PR? I’m confused.
I don’t believe they didn’t have a relationship. I think Ashanti doesn’t want to admit she slept with him while he was legally a married man & she doesn’t want it to look like she slept with him to be bigger in her career. I get it! Everyone knew they were an item back then. The whole Murda Inc camp said it. Angie didn’t even believe it. We all make mistakes at a young age & have regrets. But use it as a learning experience instead of denying it all together. I believe Irv was obnoxious in his delivery but it was his truth. It was his story to tell. I do believe he used manipulation as a tactic being upset. That’s just how I see it!
@@shedopesy769 She actually said that in the interview though. She said that he told her that he was legally separated at the time that they were messing around. You can even look up the interview that Irv said that in on RUclips.
My respect for Ashanti just increased EXPONENTIALLY. Such an elegant, classy, and poised way to handle being blindsided from someone you once trusted. It's awesome how Angie got her to open up. It's very rare that Ashanti shares her personal life. I admire her classiness even more. Kudos to you both!🤩
I love her music, but class acts do not have sexual relationships with married producers to get ahead. Irv is a dickhead, no doubt, but Ashanti is calculating and cunning in her ability to use whoever she needs to use to get ahead. Just listen to her words. She will do anything to get that fame back!
THIS was what we needed and I was positive Angie would create the space for Ashanti to feel comfortable and talk about her situation like never before. This was a really good interview!

People are saying she will never admit she was in love with Irv. But two people can have two different experiences and if they weren’t in a committed relationship for her it was just a situation and for him she was his property. I feel like people can’t fathom that a woman would be able to move like this and a man could be this bitter and upset. Ashanti is so classy and I love that she responded in her own time and own way.

❤

OMGosh!!! I just posted the same thing.

I was thinking where is Wendy when you need her to share what she knows about the situation.
Angie has more tact than Barbara. We can let Angie stand on her own merits
So glad she is not out talking her guest
She is....I've always been drawn to her interview style. Very genuine and laid back
Like two friends talking instead of someone with their own agenda with someone else story. She has respect and boundaries and that makes people more comfortable to share with you.

Right. You can tell she genuinely cares for her friends/guests, versus the other media outlets who just want a sound bite & some tea.
😂 you’re definitely an Ashanti fan. @bananas I used to laugh whenever she’d say that.
Omg that was a funny era but you said it well on the last part👏🏽👏🏽
Yo she always said that back in the day lol
Bananas, her laugh, and saying it was organic or the process came about organically…three things I always heard in Ashanti interviews lol
For real people seem to forget that her mother is The Selena Johnson an amazing singer song writer in her own right
Happy her and Nelly are back together. ♥♥♥

The reason Ashanti is so believable for me is… how many times she characterized the situation as “sad”. That shows how personal Gotti made it.
Wow! This basically confirmed what I thought I knew. Her career should have gone a lot further. She is talented!!! He blocked a lot of her blessings.

I’m glad Angie Martinez is doing podcasts because these are true conversations with her people. She allows them to talk and express themselves.
People forget how commercially successful Ashanti was back then:
- World Record for Fastest/Biggest Debut Album for a Female Artist (Billboard and Guinness World Record)
- "Foolish" went #1 for 11 weeks and one of the greatest selling songs of all time
- 1st solo artist in history to have 2 top spots on Billboard Hot 100
- 1st solo artist in history to have 3 top spots on the Billboard Hot 100
- The World's top selling female artist of 2002
- Billboard Woman of the Year 2002
- 4 #1 Hits on the Billboard Hot 100 (including the songs that Jennifer Lopez stole from and tried to take credit for due to Irv Gotti evil politics)
- A profusion of awards including many Bilboard, American Music Awards and a Grammy
Etc
Ashanti could've continued to have global succes, but the music industry did her wrong plus the federal government when they had investigated Irv Gotti and Murda Inc.
She also had a full ride scholarship to the prestigious Ivy League Princeton University 😲😲😲
Nonetheless Ashanti is a legend.
Exactly because she was literally everywhere I never forgot her and Murder inc reign and I was a kid at the time

Thank you Angie for creating a safe space for Ashanti. Ashanti is a class act and as she eloquently demonstrates….YOU CAN TELL A STORY WITHOUT THROWING SOMEONE UNDER THE 🚌 BUS!!!!!
Being a native NY’er living my best life now in Bermuda, I was there when Ashanti blew up on the scene and was there when Angie started her radio show. These women have grown into their own!!!! I’ve always loved Angie style of interviewing. Well done Ang 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
