Rammstein is a German Neue Deutsche Härte band formed in Berlin in 1994. The band's lineup-consisting of lead vocalist Till Lindemann, lead guitarist Richard Kruspe, rhythm guitarist Paul Landers, bassist Oliver Riedel, drummer Christoph Schneider, and keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz-has remained unchanged throughout their history. Their approach to songwriting has also remained unchanged, with Lindemann writing and singing the lyrics over instrumental pieces that the rest of the band have completed beforehand.
Vocal Coach REACTS - Rammstein 'Mutter' has been created in the hope that you may learn how to harness your own performance abilities and be able to make smart, informed choices on stage that enhance your performance.

What makes the Chorus like a 1000 times more beautiful and bittersweet in german is the fact, that bithmark means, literally translated, "mothers mark" in german.
So he sings about the grief against his (not existing) mother and then the fact he has a (mothers) mark on his face gives him so much shame that there could be any connection with him (and the mother that never existed) so he wants to get rid of it even though it could kill him. Just out of grief, sadness and disappointment.

As a native german speaker I have to admit that it's very difficult to translate the lyrics correctly. Especially when words are used in a rhyme form. In many songs the meaning is open and is up to the audience to interprete the text. Rammstein often use ambiguous phrases. Often with either a lewd or a brutal meaning. All lyrics are full of strong emotions. Even for native speakers it's sometimes difficult to decode the real meaning behind these very poetic metaphors. German is a very old language and has many traditional or outdated expressions you only see in historic literature.
If you like the style of Till Lindemann, try songs from the band Unheilig (unholy) with their lead singer "Der Graf". These songs are more calm, for example: ruclips.net/video/xkyc3zrTDcU/видео.html (just as you were).

Yay! I love your Rammstein reactions. You seem like such a sweet guy!
Your analysis/ideas are very interesting! I do see this sense of longing for something we can‘t have in the lyrics. Personally, I think the song displays one of the most basic human instincts: the need for motherly affection. Even when you want to hate your mother (or father - this can be applied to both!) for whatever she may have done, there‘s still this part of you that wants her love, mo matter what.
This is one of those songs that really evoke strong emotions in me. My father was an alcoholic and for me it felt like he destroyed our entire family. I have to admit, at one point I wanted to hate him and have nothing to do with him. I really did. However, one day, as we were visiting him (we had moved out of the house), I felt that sudden urge that made me just... ignore all that and hug him. Shortly after that day, he died. I don‘t know if it was fate, but I‘m incredibly happy we were on good terms in the end. This song reminds me of that time, that confusing, painful but also fortunate time I had with my father.
It‘s just beautiful when a song manages to pull such emotions out of you. That‘s why I love Rammstein.

All members of Rammstein often mentioned that there is no official interpretation for their songs. Sometimes Till just uses words like paint on a blank canvas, creating images that does not have to form a consistent meaning. The music videos are not decrypting the songs, but adding more layers and sometimes simply stories and visual imagery that the band found amusing.

They don't like giving official interpretations of their songs because they believe art should be free for individual interpretation. Everyone should think for themselves. If the band adds further layers of interpretation via their videos (which can also be totally contrary to the lyrics), their own interpretation must already exist as a prerequisite.

No matter what you listen to from them, it's all great and if you ever get a chance to see them live, check them out. There are very few German bands that are so into their music. (Sry, german mothertongue, so excuse my mistakes in spelling ;))

Some small things that cant really be conveyed in the translation are that the birthmark is actually called "Muttermal" which basically means mothers mark. Also the first time he sings "even if it may cause me to die" but the second time it changes to "even if I it may cause me to bleed to death"

"Eel lives in her lungs", in Lindemann's music video Knebel there is an eel inside of an woman.
I think that Till references to other creations almost like the children of Tama communicate. (Star Trek race who uses only metaphors to communicate.)
In Knebel the man might have hate-love relationship for women because of actions of his mother, thus an eel lives/an eel shoul live in her lungs.
Natürlich, this is only one theory but it kinda makes sense. Deutschland opening with Du Hast is of course more vague because du hast is mostly a word play.

This will be a special week for me, watching you reacting to one of my favourite bands...
Mutter is a beautiful ballad where Till Lindemann uses the clone theme to express how it feels like having a bad relationship with your mother.
The instrumental intro of this song always reminds me of "still loving you" by the Scorpions...

I subscribed! Rammstein brought me to your channel and I have to say I love how balanced and respectful your reacts are to this band. Rammstein have been with me for the majority of my life and have helped me in some of my most darkest of days. From the first moment I heard them, whilst on a School Exchange Trip to Herten, I was enraptured. It's such a powerful mix of deep, driving riffs mixed with beautiful (if a little dark) lyrics and accentuated with melodic keyboards. I never heard anyhting like it before. Even without an understanding of german, like it was for me in the beginning, you can hear the emotion and energy in the songs.

It's even difficult to understand for a German native... For example
"Der Mutter die mich nie geboren
      Hab ich heute Nacht geschworen"
The frase is grammatically incorrect and wrong since the first frase doesn't contain any verb.
In German frase structure it would go:
The mother that me never born ("had")
      Have I tonight sworn
Now you can clearly see that he took out the verb so it could rhyme.
This is just one example of many when it comes to rammstein lyrics.
I hope this could help :)

I've always considered the "eel in her lungs" as a reference to the "tube in his throat" from the second line. He makes her equal to himself. His life starts in water with a tube in his throat, and her life ends in a perverted version of this state.
Also, i love the expression of mingled fascination and revulsion in Ken's face as he reads the lyrics. :D like "Holy son of a Hamster, this is ...explicit!"

  • @corinna007
    @corinna007 3 года назад +1

The literal story in the lyrics is about a child born from a lab experiment, but it's also said that the song was inspired by Till's and Richard's relationships with their mothers. I don't have the greatest relationship with my mother, so this song gets me.

One interpretation of the "an eel lives in het lungs" is based upon the Günter Grass’s 1959 novel "The Tin Drum"; in which the central character’s pregnant mother dies from eating large quantities of fish, after she sees eels swarming a dead horse’s head on a beach. She eats the eel to try to avoid the birth of her unborn child as she is not sure who the father is. It is a dark book and the first of Grass's Danziger Trilogie. FYI - Günter Grass is the recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature and the movie based on the book won the 1979 Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1980. Is that Till's inspiration,? We will never know, but it is a nice idea.

German Level 2: Birthmark is in German "Muttermal" this translates literaly to "Mother Mark". Thats why he wants to cut it out of his Forehead.
Its complicated to induct you to the art of Words, Till uses. He was grown up as a Son of a Child Book Author, Poet, Editor and Writer. This alone qualifies him as an Artist of the German Language. Nothing less his Mother was Radio Journalist, so the whole Childhood was filled with layers and layers of German Langauge. His Essays in Elementary School must be more than Awesome, so his Texts are nowadays. And "Mother" is a Songs where he can play on the Instrument "German Language". Only topped by "Mann gegen Mann". This Song is in the first 3/4 dripping of ambiguity so much, you can ignore them and listen to a rather useless Song or this is close to LGBTQ Porn. Both at the same Time. German Language at maximum attack mode.

Working in a job in which I often deal with child-neglect I kind of feel more drawn to an interpretation where this song is more about the realtionship between a mother and her child, for whom she doesn't care that much... When I talk to those children I often feel that mixture of unconditional love for the mother on the one hand, but also a deep resentment and hate towards her for not giving her child the love and care, he or she deserves... but maybe I'm wrong^^

One of the songs I like to sing for trainging my own voice.
Back in the day they made the music video, the band of RAMMSTEIN was about to fall apart, but, but like the grown men they are, they attended therapy sessions together to sort things out instead of leafing the band. To quote them: "Being in a band is like marriage, but without the sex."
