  • Folk toys can be ingenious things, with simple physical principles behind them. Rob shows how to make the climbing acrobat, and you don't have to be a wood carver if you use simple things around the home.

I just made one, I didn't bother with the artistic side of making the guy, I'm not in that mood. The rest, I did it the same as the video. It worked great! It's an awesome effect. I barely experimented with it, it result probably vary by thread, straw, but also importantly by the distances, angles of straw, and if the distance between straws and between threads hangning points, leaving a lot of room for experimentation and discovery of how it works under all circumstances. So, great activity!

I vividly remember watching this segment as a child and then making one of my own. It worked exactly as shown. This show was a staple of my childhood. Thanks for allowing us to revisit these memories.

    Fun project!
I've built them with students, but using a hole punch and thinner tongue depressors for the top bar and manikin :-)

Yes, I guess there are many ways. The trick for us always was to try to do it with "found" objects - Rob

If we built this on a larger scale I believe we would have essentially free energy for the world

Question: were there any glue guns back then?

possibly not for 10-year olds out in country towns. We tried to use what most kids had to hand - Rob

@@CuriosityShow I see. I grew up with one due to my mom's crafting, and now they are sold for a couple of dollars over at any of our op shops, so I was honestly curious.
Just made one last night and it looks great. I hope my nefews will like this project.

Thanks Rob. If you were living in the sticks, obtaining a hot glue gun or tongue depressor (From another comment) would have made this a non-starter. I enjoyed doing this one as a kid. Needed to eat ice cream from stick first though.
