Fascinating!! I never heard of either of these two people. Thank you Dr. Abramson for your thoughtful lectures and shorts like this. I learn something new each time.
Very nice to hear this anecdote about this well-known person with the same name as my son, not named after him but it happened to come out this way (also Jacob Rodrigues Pereira)
Thoroughly enjoyed ! Thanks Doctor! I’m pretty sure that the Chid”a didn’t publish the מעגל טוב himself like he did dozens of his works . The מעגל טוב was printed after his passing from his ledger or diary that he kept. It’s a treasure full of info about personas and communities in latter half of 18th century, but sometimes very difficult to decipher as it was written cryptically intended for the author alone. The Chida never edited it as I don’t think he ever planned to publish it. If I remember correctly from the last time I read the מעגל טוב , the Chid”a wasn’t very happy about the level of observance in Bordeaux. He had a difficult time finding a place suitable to partake a meal in .
A) In one of the editions, it says in a foreword that the Chida told his son R' Yehoshua that he did not wish to publish it, because there are personal observations that may embarass the persons involved. B) For many years it was only possible to purchase a censored version of the original Maagal Tov manuscript. Only in recent decades was the original uncensored version published.
The first practical experience and success teaching deaf mute individuals was carried out by Pedro Ponce de León in the 1500s. Long, long before this character. In the 1600s, Juan Pablo Bonet improved on previous ideas and defeloped a gentle method to teach deafmutes to communicate. Sorry, more often than not, a Spaniard did it before. I wouldn't be surprised if, under closer imagination, we can accuse him of plagiarism.
Thank you, sir, for bringing this intriguing story of these great Hachamim to us, your listeners.
