Trotz had nearly 30M to spend. You cannot compete with that. Pesce and Dillon are on very good contracts. Fitzgerald did ok so far. Defence is sorted.

Remember Hamilton didn't play at all last year. You forget if he comes back healthy how much better the defense is. We need Timo Meier to start scoring goals

I mostly agree with you, but Timo was just hurt last year. He’s gonna score of the 35 to 40 goals this year.
Hard to compete with a team that plays in a city with no state tax. Getting stamkos would have been great but would have been a massive overpayment

Happy with Pesce and Dillon. Defense is beefier and more physical. But, a lot of players are being severly overpaid like Zadurov and some others that may look bad in a few years from now.
Noesen is back, which is a great pick up for the bottom 6. I kind of low key wish they brought back Henrique. But, we shall see what else is happening.

Disagree on the Zadorov being overpaid let alone severely. For such a unique and necessary element type of player you take that in a heartbeat no matter what team you are

There are a lot more teams in the NHL we can’t assume they even wanted to come here at all. Can’t get everyone every time. We revamped the team with top hitting guys and defensive minded defenders. Added vets and size which fitz was true to his word completely. He delivered on everything he said so far except top 6 foward that’s very successful so far to me.
I feel the culture changing already.

I mentioned it on the other video but happy NJ skipped on Stammer but should have tried harder on Marchassault. Not really okay when JM gets 5.5 from NSH and Palat is making 6mil to not be very good at all.

We have Timo, Bratt, Hischier, Hughes, Mercer. We have offensive talent. We needed to keep goals out of the net. This makes sense.

Nashville was a playoff team last yr saying he went for the bag when they were better positioned than us is insane.. he probably went to highest bidder but to say we better than Preds is completely off
@suikamidik770 Making the playoffs and being viewed as a true contender are 2 different things. Most people (and Vegas betting odds) had us closer to winning the Cup than Nashville. I believe many experts/pundits/analysts would have agreed too. DO NOT GET CONFUSED. Last year was an abomination. The 24-25 Devils WILL be much closer to the 22-23 Devils than the 23-24 Devils. The Devils aren't this fledgling team that many hockey fans believe them to be. Stamkos 100% went for the cash. In a state tax free state to boot! He lost a lot of respect with me for this one

I think if Fitz had just kept silent, and made these exact same signings it wouldn't feel like a disappointment. You can't puff out your chest and tell us your big game hunting, and then go get B to B+ guys. Markstom is probably the best move he made and let's be real...any GM running our team would have made that happen as it was a forgone conclusion.

Can't complain too much, we got what we needed. We are a team who has no problem scoring, but we were a team that liked to not play D and give up 2 and 3 goal leads in the 3rd period. Granted we had a ton of injuries last year with having what, 9 different defensemen and 5-6 different goalies? No team chemistry, 3rd period meltdowns.. We have what we need to stabilize all that crap from last year.
Wouldn't mind seeing Henrique come back, versatile player who can slot in anywhere and bring in some leadership. We are still a young team but we need stability so we can get chemistry and we definitely are better now than we were at any point last year.

I’m not disappointed at all, we will be buyers at the deadline and make the playoffs with these changes and maybe we pick up someone else. Tarasenko for free is now my wish! Nashville had a lot more $ to work with and maybe Marchessault preferred Nash over NJ for reasons we don’t know. Happy we passed on stamkos honestly we don’t need another PALAT situation.

You wanted heavier, edgier, and more violent..... Dillon hits way more than Zadorov, and Dillon isn't a small guy either at 6-4 225.
I can understand the disappointment with what was this point in the day on Day one, but at least the D is improved. They were sorrowful last season. The net and the blueline are secure for now. I'm happy from that perspective, but I would like to see another trade for a top-6 guy. I don't know how, or who, but one more would make me feel better too.
@MrZeek1519 I like Dillon, but the Zadorov hits are next level. I think he intimidates opponents in a different way than Dillon does. Overall I am happy with the improvements. Like you, I just want that Top 6 guy
When I look at the “big names” I feel like somewhat depressed. When I realize our defense improved pretty big over last year I’m ready for the season to start! If we have a healthy top 6, 86 and 7 comes back fully recovered, we are set. F Zadorov and F Stamkos.
Our giant is coming in a couple years.
It wasn’t as exciting as I had hoped for, but we did get better. I’ll wait for the season and some badass Devils hockey to get excited.

@TravelinDevil76 I was initially disappointed we didn't land the sexy Top 6 guy. It wasn't meant to be. We addressed the most glaring pain points from last season. GOALTENDING AND DEFENSE! We will be much harder to score against AND to play against. I have high hopes for next season. LET'S GO DEVILS!!!
When we were winning cups it was on the back of good defence and goal tending with average offence team is more similar to that makeup now.

B+ for fitzy addressed the D and goalie , bad contracts for stammer and john m, we got bigger and stronger

Stamkos would have killed the budget with that contract he signed. Anyone else that people were hoping for and signed elsewhere had more reasons to sign to other teams other than "Fitz failed", which is the most ridiculous way to look at it. There are other factors involved and if money is the reason for some, then I'm glad we don't have them eating up more of our cap space. The most important thing was to beef up the defense with guys who focus on the defensive aspect of their position and Fitz did exactly that with the guys he picked up over the last two days. Noesen fills a need for that middle 6, he's been playing his best hockey the last 2 seasons and will be able to contribute some offense along with bringing sandpaper. For everyone losing their shit because some massive splash didn't happen today, you have to remember that there's the entire summer to work out a trade for the right player to fit next to Jack.

@@runninwiththedevils As you and I have discussed before, if there's a way to move out that Palat contract, then maybe there's an avenue for a trade where NJ can afford to trade for someone that's going to cost a good chunk of change, which is likely what will be required for a player to really have an impact on the top 6 with Jack. I think the lineup they have right now is playoff bound and if Fitz can pull the strings to nab that elusive T6 player, then hold onto your hats because the Devils will be really, really scary!
They got some grit and size and help on defense and in goal. Can't afford some of those big names and sign Mercer. I think they will be much improved from last season.

Completely changed from Gerber Baby Food to a can of Manwich. Stamkos & Marchessault wanted to go to Nashville, where the taxes are better. You can't change that. This team is still loaded, and at this point, I think we're getting greedy. No teams win the Stanley Cup by winning in free agency. This team is much more improved from last season.

Im not disappointed at all. The backend needed to be upgraded and i feel like fitz did just that. We got more grit which is what everyone wanted and happy to see Noesen back. Lets go Devil's!!

I get the frustration at losing both Stammer and Marchessault, but Fitz successfully upgraded the 2 biggest problems for the team. Goaltending is a night and day difference and the defense got bigger and tougher to play against. I wish we could've added HOF leadership and experience with Stammer or a proven playoff performer in Marchy, but I'm not mad about how today went. Bottom 6 added more sandpaper and toughness (still time for Rico to join!), so now the only missing piece is a top 6 winger. I would've liked to see Duke play alongside Jack, but I'm fine with Fitz' moves and I'm excited to see how he addresses that top 6 spot. Also, our in division opponents either stayed the same or got worse. Canes lost a lot of players and the Rangers, still handcuffed by Igor and Trouba, didn't do anything. Think today was a good day for the devils, cant wait for the live later!

This was underwhelming to say the least. I'm fine with Dillon we are improved. But at 4 mil we couldn't cough up one extra mil to sign zadorov. Like big game hunting looks like we were being cheap as hell... Zadorov literally signed for only 5 mil like we could of got him so annoyed. And Nashville bamboozled us got not one but two of the people we wanted. And it was in the bag for marcheassualt would go to the devils and preds just come a swoop him from under us
@davinpoggy It is underwhelming, but I think we did well. I would have LOVED Zadorov for $1M more than Dillon. The Analytics Department definitely told Fitz that Zadorov was a no no. I was hoping for the Top 6 forward...

@davinpoggy Gonna be tough capwise as well. I like Toffoli, but at $6M we could have spent that money better elsewhere. The Marchessault contract is the one that stings me the most
Very happy with Dillon and Pesce.
We shored up our biggest weaknesses, team defense and goalie. We got grittier.
Missing on Stamkos is disappointing but ... really not the end of the world. Not to me, anyway. It was a real long shot.
This team still goes as Jack Hughes goes, imo. If the team can stay healthy, he might win the scoring title.

It feels like a LOT of these major free agents signed in Western conference teams, half of them in Nashville lol.
I think the Canes and Rangers will fall off some. The rest of the division is pretty darn mediocre and other than the Caps, they didn't do much from what I saw.
I agree we didn't get a "homerun" free agency, however Cup winners aren't usually built in FA. Fitz did a solid (admittedly not great) job augmenting the team without getting caught chasing expensive pieces on constrictive term.
Zadorov for 1m more than Dillon is a bit of a bummer, however the 3 years to 6 years is probably the better but less sexy option.

You don't want to overspend in free agency, better to keep your powder dry for now, see how your season is going and pounce at the trade deadline for a difference-making player like a top-six forward.

Heading into free agency I was hopeful we would land just one of Stamkos, Marchessault, Zadorov, or Tanev. 0 for 4 on that group, but at the end of the day we have added much needed size and strength on the blue line. More hitting, shot blocking, more physicality and there should be more of that with the additions of Kovacevic, Dillon, and Pesce. Even Cotter, should add a bit more of that grit on the bottom 6. Not the flashy moves that are stealing the headlines today but overall I think we are a better team today than we were last season with the additions of Keefe, Markstrom, and the four signings in the last two days. Let’s see what Fitz has up his sleeve for one more move up front.

I'm happy with the offseason so far, getting Markstrom, getting Pesce, adding depth. Just want to see them go out and get Necas or Tarasenko. or someone that can play top 6 or top 9.

We need a shoot first mentality winger now with these defensemen and Noesen. Palats contract is a real killer. $6 million should be enough for a top six winter but instead we get 40 games with 0.5 PPG production per season. Seems like a good guy but that contract aged poorly the minute that it was signed

Fitz kinda screwed us on this. What I mean is his comments of Big Game hunting and "Bigger, More Violent" made me think the Devils were going to make this huge earth shattering splash. Sure, at this moment the Devils are a completely different looking team but the expectations set by Fitz made us expect so much more. To use a car reference, He made us think we were getting a Ferrari and in the end all we got was a Mustang. The Mustang isn't bad but its no FERRARI> If you take away Fitz'z stupid embellishments this was a pretty good couple of weeks for the Devils, But is too late to retract his comments and I'm sorry but the deals do not live up to those lofty expectations. Nothing to do now but put it behind us and look forward to the season. The fact is the Devils really are a much better club then last years version.

As THG often says the teams who are quiet in free agency are often good and the teams that are not are often bad. Personally I like to mostly save free agency for patches like we did in this case. Even if they got someone else, looking at Palat moving down. Looking at the lineup it looks so obvious that adding a winger to that 2nd line would settle out the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines.

Nashville is in contention after these moves. They already had Bruno as coach, O'Reilly and Forsberg up front, Josi on D, Saros in net, Trotz running the show -- that's a solid foundation to add Stammer, Marchy, and Skjei to imo. Disappointed that Fitz missed out, 1000%, but at least NJ is still improving with the moves that did happen. And our offense was already in a decent place. We'll see if anything else shakes out before tonight.

Love ya bud but cmon dude. We got so much tougher to play against and defensively (which was our major problem) with with the additions of Cotter, Noesen, Pesce, Dillon, and Kovacevic. They had a combined 692 hits last season and they're big dudes, never mind MacDermid, Lazar and Bastian. Throw in Timo and Palat in there as well as not being a pushovers.
The Stamkos deal is completely retarded, TB offered him half of what he got. Fitz should've be fired on the spot if gave him that contract, that would be insane for us. The Preds had double the amount of cash the Devils have as well and they used it but their defense is total trash.
There's a thing called the cap, I would have liked a top six upgrade but there's not much else out there we can afford.
Our defense is freaking stacked holy shit and if you're an old school Devils fan that's where we should concentrate on and build out from there. We already have the hardest part to acquire which are two stud defensemen in Luke and Nemec as well as the forward core of Jack, Nico, Timo and Bratt, throw in Mercer as well. We just need another top 6 guy and we're set.

Not alone man in the disappointment, been moping around all day. Everyone acts like Fitz sucks in air pollution and farts perfume for 2 players we were already rumored to get. (Really curious if Pesce’s agent let this leak to help negotiate - pure speculation of course.) Does it upgrade the D? Yes. Is it a Cup winning move - I personally don’t believe it is. I’ll be happy to be wrong about that, but it seems like our new MO is if things don’t go the way we want make minor changes (and claim they’re huge.) The fact that the Devils instagram is referring to Pesce as a “big fish,” makes me wonder if they think he qualifies as “big game hunting.” Like you said “upgrade” for both but let’s save the parade for Fitz until he gets a bigger name, or they prove something. I think we only needed goaltending and defense our top six is talented we have 4 (30goal) scores that's enough we just needed defense and yeah maybe mercer had a bad season but he averages 25 goals or more and our defense is going to have 3 elite puck movers in Hamilton Hughes and Nemic we will be fine

Nah im super happy with the devils offseason.
1. Pesce is super underrated and basically a better version of John Marino. Dillon adds more size and is just another piece to help Nemec in sheltered mins.
2. Do we really want Stamkos on an 8 x 4M? I definitely don’t. We brought in two hard forecheckers in Noesen and Cotter to add size and tenacity up front.
3. We got out bona fide starting goalie.
Oh and we added a 6 foot 7 defense prospect. Devils will be back on top this year.

@eddie2253 I didn't want Stamkos at that price. I foolishly thought he may sign a somewhat team friendly deal to play for a contender. Turns out he was always about the $$$ HARD PASS FOR ME. I like the Bottom 6 beef brought in. I just wanted a Top 6 forward too

@@runninwiththedevilsI think something that’s being forgotten a lot is Stamkos already left money on the table when he signed his previous deal. It paid off and he won 2 cups in big part because of it. So I’m not surprised he wanted to chase the bag while he still can and part of me doesn’t blame him for it. He’s already won a boatload in hockey
@Surl9596 He has already made well over $100M playing hockey as well. I expect too much of athletes I suppose. I would value the Cup over a couple extra million a year....I thought he would too
