  • Recently we celebrated Dragon Boat Festival, which in Qinghai has nothing to do with Dragon Boats. In this video we share our celebration, and both my mother-in-law and my husband share the local customs and the local food - what it's like today and what it was like when they were kids.

    I live in Nova Scotia , Canada, and we have Dragon Boat races. Companies, groups, sports teams and interested people form crews and they race to a beat drummed out by the team drummer. The drumming helps the crew to keep together in sinc. My daughter has paddled since she was 12, for sport and competitively . Native Indians had what the called war canoes, the big ones with a crew of 12 or 14 with a Cox in the back to call out the timing and steer the boat. The indigenous Indians boats were also used to move the villages as they followed the resources and seasons. When they started the Dragon boat races here she found a crew to paddle with every year until her shoulder just couldn’t do it anymore. The town of Dartmouth Nova Scotia is called the city of lakes and there are a lot of paddling clubs here. During the spring ,crews practice and grow stronger and in summer they practice everyday and have racing regattas every weekend. When my daughter was 16 the National races were held in the Olympic course in Montreal, her crew won gold medals in War canoe in their age category and the next category higher as well. Enjoy the celebration, now you will have a story to share and know that the Dragon boats are still in use halfway across the world, many people gather to watch the races and cheer on the crews, and celebrate with a fair sharing food and music as well.🙋🏼

    It is sad to say that many younger Chinese generations nowadays are losing touch with their traditions. Miriam, you are able to see the values of all these traditions and bring them alive in your videos !Thanks for keeping the Chinese traditions alive, keep up the good works. It is a very meaningful and enriching works that you have been doing !!

    The main reason for this 5th month and 5th day of the month festive according to legend, is show solidarity respect for an official who end his life drowning into the river in ancient time that was saddens by the corruption within the governing administration or imperial court causing difficulties to the commoner at the time. 😊😊

    Your husband was very happy to see and accompany you wrapping the Zongzi by your side, but I think he should be given a big lesson because he said at the end of the video that he hasn't been so happy as he was when he was a child! I believe he should be happier now because he has a beautiful and virtuous Swedish wife, a lovely and smart Sansan, a harmonious and happy family! He seems to have everything in life, how could he not be that happy?!(snigger)

      it's about the feeling when we are in a traditional festival, when you grown up, you will not be excited as child anymore. that's what he meant, and I truly with the same feeling.

    • @orangefree9
      @orangefree9 4 года назад +1

      It’s a different kind of happiness he’s talking about obviously. It’s the kind of happiness we have when we’re a kid. Every tiny little thing in life, however silly it is in the eyes of an adult, may make us happy. No need to worry about anything in life. I’m sure this is how Sansan feels when he gets his bike around and starts riding it.
      But when we’re grown up, this kind of worry free happiness is just not possible any more. We have too many responsibilities and obligations on our shoulder. We do things for a reason, not for pure happiness. That’s why we sometimes look back nostalgically to our childhood.

    端午节 a Chinese festival when the sun is at northern hemisphere, where the summer begin. 午 means mid day (the sun is at top of head)
    The West cannot translate 端午节 to English end up dragon boat festival, or others. Luckily didn't end with Bamboo Leaf Festival.
    As summer begin, heat also begin with lots of animal activity, especially the snake and other insects in the rural area. Thus begin with lots of believe and practice to keep the family safe and healthy.

    Here in Indonesia, Chinese descendants celebrating it by going to the beach, they bring zongzi that they'd made one day before, the zongzi filled with chopped chicken, pork or shrimp that wrap with pandan leaf usually.
    They don't go working, bcause they belief can't make profit on that event.

    The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the death of the famous Chinese poet Qu Yuan (c. 340-278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu(present day Hunan and Hubei provinces) during the Warring States period of the Zhou Dynasty. A cadet member of the Chu royal house, Qu served in high offices. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance and even accused of treason. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry. Twenty-eight years later, Qin captured Ying, the Chu capital. In despair, Qu Yuan died by suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River. It is said that the local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him, or at least retrieve his body. This is said to have been the origin of dragon boat races. When his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of zongzi.

    Мириам, прекрасный влог: семья делится своими буднями, каждый занят своим делам- не спеша, красиво, мамачка с ее добрыми руками, труженица, мужичок смотрит и не сомневаюсь- пригодиться, а картина " отец и сын" - бесподобна, а тебе, Мириам, спасибо за шляпу , она вносит европейский нюанс, а дед души не чает во внуке, я понимаю, сама бабка, здоровья вам, мои дорогие👍👏✌️🌹

    你们的系列视频,越看越喜欢!内容平实接地气,你们夫妻、两边家庭成员们的人性本真和淳朴善良很打动人!本人也从青海出来,对视频展现的自然环境、日常生活和熟悉的青普话都倍感亲切!
    看到字幕中有些对应的中文字词不太准确,可能是对口音辨别不清所致。如需专人校对,我愿为效力。

    This is the occasion to commemorate the Chinese patriotic poet Quyuan (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qu_Yuan). After killing himself in the Miluo rive in Hubei province over 2000 years ago, ppl rushed to the scene beating the drums and throwing rice dumplings to the water to scare the evil spirits and fish away from his body. This has been observed as Dragon Boat or Duanwu Festival until this day. Of course, instead of throwing them into the river, we now treat ourselves with the delicious rice dumplings called Zongzi. It started as a sad day, as such, we don't say 'Happy Duanwu Festival, instead, we say 'Have a safe and healthy Duanwu Festival'. Cheers!
