What's your excuse for not ditching the dye? If you're on the fence and still coloring your hair, spill the beans girl!

    • @dindixie
      @dindixie 3 года назад

I am late to the party, I guess.
I am a natural dirty blonde with natural red highlights. I only used Mehandi senna for conditioning, and one time I used a "temporary" wash-out dye that tinted my hair for over a year. I have never had salon color or a home lasting dye kit used on my hair. In 2016, I added 3% BAQ henna to my senna, and haven't used anything that would possibly color my hair in the past 3 years. I am going on 57, and surprised that I have been gradually turning more and more mousy brown since the change. I found my first white hair last November, but haven't seen one since. I am grandmother to a 6 y/o girl and twin 3 y/o boys and have been waiting on some white hair to go with the title of "Anny". At this rate my poor daughter (mother to the twins) may go grey before I do.

Hi y'all, I am 32 years old and I HAVE GRAY HAIR! It took me good few months to decide to let it grow and my biggest excuse was - I was scared and I loved my bright red/ ginger/ orange color I had for years. It was my husband who suggested me going natural and now he loves every centimeter growing in and studies the play of colors often. 10 months in and will not look back.
Thank you Renee for your wonderful support, sending y'all blessings from Ireland!

@@WelcomeToMyCurls Well, my natural hair is dark, not brown, not black, but really dark gray like ash mouse - cold. And my growing out color is faded red, so something like dirty yellow - warm. I'm in progress... but one day it will be completed and beautiful. And then I will let it grow long to my waste as my red hair was. :) And also I have those two main silver strains on sides. Its very interesting to watch.

This summer i will be 49. I stopped dying my hair in fall of 2018. I have gotten support from friends but criticism from others..." you are too young for grey hair"... well if I was too young for grey hair then it wouldn't be growing in grey. My hair is so healthy now that I stopped. My scalp is so healthy now that i stopped.... #lovinmygreys

I am 55 and and started my transition at 40. Towards the end of the transition, I started becoming more aware of my “style”. While I don’t spend money on dye, I do spend it on getting my hair cut regularly and try to make sure it is always neat and tidy. As best I can, make sure my clothes are stylish - frumpy washed out clothes are more aging than grey hair. Agree 100% about beiges and similar - don’t even think about, even if they are on sale. Invest in a good bright lipstick.

I’ve been coloring my hair for 35 years and have had no intention to stop, even though I hate going to the hairdresser every 4 weeks to have it done. Your videos have been encouraging, and I’m considering letting my hair go gray. I can’t think of a better time since it may be at least two months for our state to make beauty salons available. By that time I’ll be partly there (my hair is short and straight)!

I had many naysayers in my life but, after about nine months, they began to give me compliments. Now, 14 months in, I have an aunt who has started her journey, a cousin who keeps asking questions and wanting me to text her pics of my hair, and a friend who keeps talking with me about it. Ditching the dye is SOOOOO liberating! I also work in commercials and TV and it has not affected my work at all. 😀

I teach elementary school. The first day they came in after my first transition step (I’m getting the dye bleached out over time), they definitely noticed and asked what happened to my hair. I put on a shocked face and said, “What?! It was dark when I came in!” They laughed, and I did, too, and now it’s just something they accept. I went from box dye black and what’s growing out is a pure, bright, solid white. It’s still a waiting game, but so much fun. You look fabulous, and it’s nice to watch someone else’s journey! There are already so many benefits to ditching the dye, and the list keeps growing. 😊

I needed to hear this. You are truly inspiring! Been thinking this is a good time to actually do it after thinking about it for awhile. I’m 44 and tired of the constant colouring (for YEARS) and the need to “hide” my grey. In my head I have most of those excuses floating around with the biggest one being fear. I know my husband and daughters would be fully supportive...and that’s what matters most...it’s getting past knowing people will talk and not letting the negative comments get to me. So I want to thank you for your positive spirit! You are beautiful :)

Hubby said about 2 months ago that he liked the white at the front and thought it was sexy! I’m 68! He also said that quite a few of his friends had said they also like what I was doing with my hair! 🙂 I think I used a few of those excuses! 😂 I’m in this for the long haul now! I experienced that whatever thing you make to your hair, there will always be someone to comment... event if it's only a new haircut! Three years ago, I did have my natural grey hair... I changed job. All of my new colleagues and even my boss were commenting on that... Under this pressure, I dyed my hair. It lasted a year and a half and I regret it so much, with all the roots touch up... Now, I am on my journey to find back what I have lost!!!

Love your videos...I started my journey 6 months ago and I just cut my hair short and it all natural! It’s really white in the front and salt/pepper in the back. Everyone, including me loves it and it is so much softer than before. No more hair loss either. My hair is in the best shape it’s been in 30 years! Best thing I have ever done. It was hard to go through the “unkept” phase at work, but my hair was long so I pulled it up a lot and made it work. I let everyone on my job know what I was doing and they supported me. I told them my goal was to grow it out enough to get it cut short and they were so excited to see the finished product. In fact, some said I looked 20 years younger-with the gray!!! If you are on the fence, I promise you, you will love the end result!

My DH is actually the one who is going grey!
People have commented, he's been asked by complete strangers if he'll dye it. If I am there with him I will look at the commenters in the eye and tell them they are my greys, I gave them to him (he started going grey about the same time I had some rather big health scares) and I love them. They give me a weird look and he gives me a hug.

I have been dyeing my hair since I was 11 y.o (yes, eleven!!), changing compulsivelly from browns to reds and so on. I have tryed to embrace my natural colour (dark ashy blond) SO MANY TIMES, but I always go back to the dyes, just because I get bored of my face and wanna feel different. My journey for natural hair has started (again) 1 month ago, hopefully this time I'll be able to feel more comfortable on my own skin. Thank you for sharing your experience, It's very helpful! I can honestly say its the best feeling in the world, not to have to worry about coloring my hair anymore. I have been dye free since 2012, and I get so many compliments on my curly white and silver short pixie style. One thing I absolutely love is no matter what color glasses I wear they look gorgeous with my silver and white curly hair. When it was time to get new glasses I purposely got a vibrant blue with bling on each corner, so many people compliment me on them and my white and silver hair. You are awesome 👊💥 I stopped coloring my hair... but I am not going gray! Is there anybody else out there that got fed up with coloring their hair? Anyone else tired of being what we think we should be? I am 51 and I stopped coloring my hair 3 years ago. I caught quite a bit of grief from everyone who was used to seeing me with red hair. Most of my friends color their hair and think I should color mine as well. My hair has never been this healthy and shiny... EVER! I look more natural then I did when I colored my hair and my hair matches me. I really appreciate your videos and would love to hear a shout out of support to those of us who just wanted to stop coloring our hair. I can't be the only woman who wanted to embrace the beauty of virgin hair. I only have a few gray hairs in the front. I call them my wisdom highlights and believe it or not... I cannot wait till I get more 🖤🤍🖤

A lot of women ask me where I got my color. Have been in sitting in her chair to get haircut and someone comes in and says they want their hair colored like mine. All the stylist say, It's Natural. It happens a lot. I had grey hair when I was 18. So glad I did it. Only way your going to know is to grow it out.

You were one of the people with a channel who convinced me to go gray. Last month, after a year, I went back to color. My husband had been supportive, no one said anything negative. It was ME who was looking in the bathroom mirror, and seeing a washed out, older looking woman staring back at her. I am almost 60, and with my light, olive skin tone, the ashy grey tone does nothing to enhance my look. Even with some makeup, not cutting it. My husband, always complimenting me almost 40 years now, admitted that the grey was not a good look for me AFTER I told him that I was going to color. I still need to work, and have experienced ageism for the past 10 years. Because of so much grey, I was able to go Golden blonde and it took; I was always dark brunette like you, Renee, and could never go much lighter. I color at home, concentrating on the roots, so far my hair is in good condition. One day, when work and situations in my life change, I’ll know if, and when, I’m ready to permanently ditch the dye. Thanks for inspiring me to give it a try, as I so desired to do it, and now at least I know what to do at this point in my life. Stay well and safe.

You did not have my concern on your list. The last time I tried to go gray, my gray was so ugly.
I am a very light blonde that started getting mousy about 20 years ago. My hair looked like ugly mouse hair, so I started using a demi color to match my blonde, and just cover the gray. I think that it is still going to look mousy. Like a rodent! I love gray hair, but not mine. I am going to give it a try. I now have 3/4 inch roots. Too soon to know what it's going to look like. If I had gray like yours, I would be very happy, but I won't. I can't believe that anyone would say such mean things to you. Your hair is enviable. I think those mean people feel afraid. Thanks so much. I love your 'y'alls'. I grew up in Texas and say y'all all the time.

    • @WelcomeToMyCurls
      @WelcomeToMyCurls  4 года назад

There is nothing more comforting than a good "y'all" LOL!! Keep me updated on your grey hair growth. Hopefully you'll find that possibly a different haircut or layers could make you feel better about the mousy color just until you get enough grey to see what it's actually going to look like. And...ask your stylist about a BLUE shampoo. I have to use a PURPLE shampoo....but I think that BLUE shampoo is specifically for ladies with blond hair? Not sure to maybe look into that.

I use your videos like a pep talk. My hair is wavy (2b and 2c in other parts), but I feel more connected to you because you're a brunette, and well I just started my journey in this. I found my first greys when I was 18. I resisted the hair dye temptation until I was 34. I'm 49 and I'm tired of it. I live in the UK, but originally from Chile and my people tell me that I'll look older and all the things you mentioned. I'm doing it anyway (I'm in 1 1/2 months now) and I just take it day by day.
In my case, I was going to the hairdresser every 2 months and my roots were very visible (there are pictures of me with my visible roots). My greys always were peeking out after a week. It was disappointing to spend so much money for nothing. 2 years ago I was going to do it, but I surrendered to the hairdresser once again. I moved cities and I still can't find a hairdresser, so I decided to just try to grow my hair. and that's it. We'll see. I want to see the pattern in a few months. Sorry for the wall of text.
P.S. Please, never cut your hair. It's glorious!

I went gray a long time ago. I stopped because of time constraints, money and health. It is not good for us. I had a bit of a preview because I developed a silver streak that showed me the color it would be. One secret that you know is the purple shampoo. It is amazing. I get compliments everywhere I go even on a bad hair day.

I'm 30 and I'm starting to get grey hairs popping up. Just a couple at the moment but I plan on letting it grow naturally now. Ive had it dyed every colour in the rainbow and i look forward to seeing what colour my body comes up with 😁 There's a woman in my town in Scotland who is in her 70s now but for as long as I could remember she always rocked beautiful long grey hair. Her and her husband always wear traditional Scottish clothing and they are just stunning to look at. I always admired her confidence. I totally agree, who cares what other people think! I can't read their mind so it's not my problem! Lol. It's sad that people leave hateful comments about other people's looks in 2020. They obviously aren't happy within themselves.
I truly look forward to he the day I have a full head of silver/grey/white hair that doesn't involve a bottle of bleach and toner!! Rock it girls!

Hi Renee! Another great video! I just have to say that I am very surprised to hear that people write nasty things like your hair is ugly. I love your hair. Remember Renee, haters are gonna hate and those nasty words are just reflections of their miserable lives. I agree with all of your 9 points and especially reason #1. Before I finally took the leap into transition I was scared. Not about what others thought or said but how I would feel about my self. It’s about being secure and feeling comfortable in your own skin. I just have to mention one more thing. If your hairdresser doesn’t support you it’s probably because of the $200+ dollars they’re no longer going to get out of you. I had my hairdresser tell me it’s not time, that I was too young. Ha! I turn 56 this year! Do you want me to wait until I’m 80???? I think not! Any who, please keep doing what you’re doing because I wait for your next video with anticipation! You are beautiful!😊

So many women say their hairdressers aren't supportive, and I agree with your point about them losing income when a client stops coloring her hair. Honestly....your hairdresser should want whats best for you. I think if we all start a movement to go grey, hairdressers would have no choice than to be supportive. And going grey is scary just as you said. You completely get me....thank you for that!

When I told my hairdresser I was going gray she said why would you do that? But after she saw it now she said it looks beautiful. My husband told me to just stop using dye he knew when he meet me I had white hair so he excepted it. You do address the issue but as I’m watching your video, I stopped at 12m15 , I am feeling shamed for covering my grey.If you’re trying to encourage people to go grey then don’t make them ashamed for dyeing their hair. I felt old seeing white hairs gradually come in but I was on the fence between knowing I hated the thought of dying my hair every 3 weeks and not liking getting older. I talked to my husband (who already started going gray himself) on what I was going through. He expressed the same exact thoughts he had as well. He told me if I knew myself then to just let it happen naturally cause I would regret it if I did dye it cause then I’d have to either keep it up or grow it out.

I’m the same age as you and have been coloring my hair for about 20 years. I am in the transition now but taking a different route. I have some of your excuses! 1. My young child is only 12. I used to say and still mean it, I don’t want to be called his grandma even though I know I’m old enough to be his grandma! 2. I have a highly visible job in event/meeting planning and my boss who is two years older than me is very posh and well-kept. I am expected to maintain her standard of professional appearance. 3. I have a darker complexion. I am 40% Spanish/Native American and have had very dark hair most of my life. With that said, I’m on a five year plan. In five years my son graduates high school and I’m tapping out of my corporate life then. I’m not sure how yet but it’s happening! Two years ago I was tired of my constant skunk stripe ruining my hair every 10 days. My different route is that I am now much lighter due to continued coloring. I was hesitant since I had disastrous results when trying this in the past. This time I let my hairdresser drive the lighter shade and it has taken time but I am now mostly blonde on top, a color I never thought I could pull off. My plan is to slowly work in the white up there. Within the next five years I will hopefully be off the color for good. I do not enjoy the process and cost of getting foils done and if something (praying nothing) happens to my corporate job due to this pandemic then my plans will change again. I guess the short story is that I’m open to change just trying to be more subtle about it. PS: just found you channel and I love it! I’m on my 3rd border collie mutt rescue dog so Pollux is the reason I found you!

I'm 56, and I don't color my hair anymore. Believe it or not, most of my hair grows in still light brown. When I was coloring my hair, the gray seemed to be more prevalent. I think its because coloring is hard on your hair, and grays are sometimes harder to color. So although I do have gray hairs, it still comes in brown. I am of the belief that to stop coloring can make your hair healthier, no matter how many grays a person has.

I wish now I had never dyed my hair. All the $$$ & time I wasted, not to mention the damage I did to my hair. It wasn't worth it. I dyed my hair bc I felt I was too young to start going grey. My daughter and daughter in law forced me to let go of my "copper" hair and let it go grey. The only reason I continue is because they love my grey. There are several reasons I still dislike my grey hair after 1 1/2 years even with all the support from family, including my husband.
First, I had curly hair, but not as beautiful as yours. I have RA, so doing all that grooming kills me, so wash and scrunch was my beauty routine for several years. I'd colour my hair a beautiful reddish brown and the dye and conditioner would make my hair soft and manageable.
Now, my medication has straightened my hair :( .... I always loved my curls. I find the grey hairs wiry and makes me look like a witch unless I fuss and primp while using tons of product. Secondly, I'll be 59 this year. Grey hair looks fantastic on women who still look youthful, it doesn't really age them because the whole picture is still one of freshness. For me, well, I look my age now... my only relief is that I'm not going to scare anyone when they see me from behind, think I'm young, and give them a shock when I turn around hahaha!
I'll keep my greys, I'll live with it, tolerate it only because my "girls" wanted it and what my girls want, my girls get! I will admit though, my greying pattern is really pretty, so there's that.

I save money, I don't have to sit in that chair, with that awful smell every 6 weeks or so. I do not miss it at all. My hairdresser says that other people actually pay to get the streaks of white that I have naturally in my hair. Mine turned out to be salt and pepper and I think it is very pretty. Besides when you get older, you know you are older, other people know you are older....who are you kidding anyway? I say ditch the dye.

I love your hair & the curls! I wish that I could be as brave as you. My natural color is almost black & when I did color over the years more blue black & have naturally curly hair as well. I noticed as time went on (around 37), I got white/silver hairs on my temples (right upper side of my forehead) & had to color more frequently. I just start to see massive amounts of roots that are black with a ton of white streaks & freaked out. Did you notice with your dark hair more brown & yellow areas by the gray/silver? I actually had my hair bleached blonde a few months back=huge mistake!! Since then put some semi dark blue black that has a purple based undertone so it wouldn't fade green. The back of my hair isn't really gray & in the front I left some light blonde parts out where it naturally grows in silver white side temples & right side of my forehead area). Lately the roots have been growing back black with lots of silver :( It really feels odd where I have a love/hate relationship with it & want to dye over it. Weird though, I get so many compliments on my blue hair lol. It just seems hard to make the transition but don't want to look old (I am 45 btw) so I played with color even though semi fades. Maybe colored shampoo as it grows? Not sure if anyone has tried that? Any suggestions are appreciated :)

Hi Kristen! First of all, I am 48. My natural hair color is black. Once I stopped coloring my hair, I was so surprised at how much of my natural black hair is still growing. I do have areas where the silver is more concentrated like in my temples...but overall I have a fairly even mixture of black to grey. You should watch my video WEIRD THINGS ARE HAPPENING WITH MY GREY HAIR. It's about how the back of my head is completely split in color...one side is grey and the other is black. I think this video would help you get a better understanding of how grey hair can differ in areas. And I use a purple shampoo to keep my grey hair bright. It removes any yellowing. Hope that helps!

I prefer my hair color and will probably never stop dying my greys. I make no excuses for it....makes me feel older than I truly am....BUT due to the current situation, let's see what will happen with my greys TBD

TBD....that is true. If you can't get to a salon, will you try to color it yourself? Just wondering....
