- Customer was complaining hvac unit blasting only hot air on his 2011 Grand Cherokee
Other shop diagnosed a broken blend door .. wanted to change the hvac unit
I found the problem ...Melted blend door seal jams the blend door on the hot position .. didn't need to replace hvac unit
Took me 5h to figure this one ... Hope it can save you guys some headaches time and $$$ - Авто/Мото
This is true definition of a mechanic and not just a parts replacer. Great job on repairing and not just replacing arts!
Brother I thank you... My setup was lil different but worked... Thanks a lot for sharing this info... Keep doing good work ..
outstanding idea! worked like a charm.
I had the same problem with my jeep and I did the same work and its work perfect thanks for you idea..
Thanks, Alex! You sound just like my cousin from Boston 😁
French canadian accent!!
Smart Mann.. I give you credit.. a simple screw😂😂
Makes total sense good job I have a 02 Durango that I’m having problems with watched a couple other videos too but that’s pretty cool with the screw do you think like I do!!!
Thank you I Appreciate that

Brilliant fix and a great video. You are going to save Grand Cherokee and Durango owners a lot of money and hassle. If I lived near you, you would be my mechanic forever. Thank you
Have the same problem on my 2014 Caravan on the passenger side. Have been told I have to spend $1800 to get it all working. I just took out the actuator and move the blend door my hand to go from hot to cold now. Move it to cold in the spring and to hot in the fall. But now that I've seen your video I may have to rethink my "fix". Hard to fit my 70 year old body under the dash; even if it is only twice a year. Well Done!!!
Dude you freaking rock! I’ve been without ac for months and am going on a long trip this weekend and got it fixed! The blend door was completely jammed and stuck that way from the melted goo inside the hvac. I managed to get it moving freely again but it would catch and get stuck exactly like this one did. Got a new actuator and gear put the screw into the gear and presto I’ve got ac again! I seriously cannot thank you enough the repair shop was quoting me 1800 bucks and I managed to get it working again for $55 and about an hour and a half of time.
How did you break it free
I'm having this same exact problem with my 2011 jeep grand cherokee...
Yeah. Same here. 2011 jeep grand cherokee. Drivers side. Got the accuator and gear delivered today. Will be attempting this repair tomorrow.
I had the exact same issue. I took a little JB weld and a little piece of zip tie and stuck it on there to create a little bit of space when in the full Heat position.
Great video! I’m sure your customer was happy! I know I was on my own vehicle. 😁👍
Innovation at its very best! Much appreciate those who think outside the box. I'm that way too.

Thank's Alex :)
I've been having this issue for a while and changed 9 gears and 4 actuators so far. I learned to do it myself as I got tired of paying 300$ for one side everytime 🙃
I hope it will fix this for good 🤞🏻, Knocking on 🌳 😁
A true auto tech, well done alex.
you know what you are one of the few rare mechanics I have ever seen in my life..I shoud call you a problem solver and you take care of your customers very well .I am a certified mechanic as well and I all ways make sure the problem within a certain part before I replace...customers can not afford to pay for try and error replacement of parts then the mechanic would loose the reputation ...Just keep the good work and good luck Alex
Maybe put some jb weld in the notch for a screw substitute...I like the stickweld version of jb weld...just a thought
Fantastic MacGyver’s got nothing on you!
Chrysler products are known for this problems I've had this problem time and time again. Thanks Alex for explaining this problem and giving us the solution. Great mechanic. 👍
Everybody is happy but the dodge dealer.
Very good thing I did it worked perfectly
your the man. and to tell RUclips how to fix and not just charge customers for new HVAC when your really just putting a gear and a screw and swapping two wires, commendable
Found your video while googling how to replace the blend door actuator on my father in law's Journey that has only hot air on the passenger side. I would have just replaced it, only to have it probably fail again. Now I'm going to add the stopper and not look like the idiot son in law I would have been when it broke again without adding this step!
My wife and I thank you 👍 (even though she has no idea about any of this. Lol) you da man!
Nova Scotia, Canada
Bro…there’s nothing I can say that everyone hasn’t already. You saved me so much time, stress, money! Many blessings to you! Que Dios Te bendiga! Worked like a charm! Thank you a million X’s over. (2012 Durango)
LmaO! Overcome adapt ! I’m having issues on mine I ordered these doorman parts going to see if they help
Been fighting this issue for a couple of years on my 11 durnago crew. First time was the driver side, replaced the actuator and gear, year later it broke in the cold position but it was early spring so i didn't mess with it and now I need to fix it again as its getting colder now. The passenger side broke just after the driver side in spring but was stuck in hot position. Got it all tore apart and the passenger side is hella easier to replace than the driver, however the flap gasket was totally melted closed and could not get it popped loose, long story short I cut a hole too access the flapper, ended up braking the plastic rod that the gear goes on, but did manage to get the flapper unstuck and turned to the cold position for the summer heat, I am able to manually switch it back and forth currently from hot to cold which I can manage a few times a year, but yeah dealer replacement was estimated at 1400.00 to tear the dash out and replace the whole unit. I will try the screw trick on the driver side when I go to replace it and hope that the flapper on the driver side isn't as stuck as the passenger side was.. The flapper gasket melts to the consistency of black tar!!! it was hard to get off my hands!!! such a crappy design for sure!!! Thanks for the video.
My dodge durango 2003 just blow cold air in the back of the car and not in front some one know why please help
Getting ready to do mines but will use a piece of double sided tape
Houston we have a problem!
Wait, I'll get Alex.
Alex, thank you!
NASA.
Amazing hack! I had a broken gear on an 11' Durango citadel and swapped the actuator out w a new gear only to hear the gears skip teeth and noticed the heat was not getting hot like the passenger side so I took it all apart again and sure enough it was a sticking door issue and the gear weren't lined up.. this screw hack saved me a lot of bs work lol I thank you
how did yo get the blind door unstuck, mine want move at all it stuck on hot/ passenger size
Alex. I have a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan that I did a HVAC blend door reset by holding the power button and recirc (I think) at the same time but now it won't come out of reset mode...HVAC lights alternately blink always, for the last two months since i reset. I even tried disconnecting battery and tied + & - cables together for 10 hours. Still won't come out of test. Any ideas how to fix that?
awesome video Great job in explaining everything. Thanks.
This sounds like my 2K Dodge Dakota,4.7/v8. Wish I could find my blend door! 😢😢😢😢
Thank for you video.I got the same problem thanks again have a nice day.😊
Hello how are you? I seen your video its great thanks so much! But even thou doing what you said it does not blow cold. What should i do now? Its the drivers side. I unstuck it and can manually move it with my hand, but the air is still not cold as the passenger. What could be the problem?
I have the same problem now with my 2010 commander hot/cold blend door motor. Your video really explained whats going on with blend door issue. I can't see spending thousands of dollars for easy fix. Most shops want to replace the entire unit.
"Its not usual for me to do a fixer upper like that...." Meanwhile Jeep is using a cheap plastic of very poor quality in their car, where it should be using metal at least.
Thank you for this video, best I found and have the same problem
awesome fix. I had same problem on 2011 jeep. must of replaced my gear 5 x.. that screw was genius.. I 'd buy you a case of beer and pay you to solve that problem like that,, I got it fixed to $1200 with total Hvac replacement.... wish I saw this video last year... Great Job Alex...
Got no heat in my 2k Dakota,4.7/v8, where.can I find one?
Did you need to clean the melted glue from the interior cylinder seal...or did you just leave it?
I have the same issue with my 2009 nitro …how much you think a job like that would cost at the mechanic shop
I will def. try this on my dodge truck.. i will add a dab of hot glue on each side the stopper instead of drill and screw though.
Update? Did it melt?
Will this work for the blend mode actuator which controls the location of air flow from defrost to face vent on a 2007 Dodge Nitro?
Great fix too bad Chrysler junk has to put us thru things like this just to help your customer.
You are a great mechanic 😊
So maybe it's why the automatic control is no working???
you are right Great Fix..THANKS
Well done Alex! I liked the detail you went into regarding the gears. I might be able to fix easily for my Dodge. Hopefully the simple fix will work. Thank you!
I did the repair, replaced the screw with a 1/4" hex head screw. Easy fix there.
I must have done something wrong, because I broke the next gear as well. I ended up spending
$500 labor for a new gear to be installed... correctly. Well now it's warrantied.
Thanks for the info, great solution, l am going to do this.
Was the new actuator and gear needed, or in could the existing one be used?
If the clapper is jammed, can you run the engine or heat on hot to loosen up the seal and push it free?
Absolutely splendid! Kudos and praises to you for figuring this out, more of the same for you posting this video.
Dude, this is killer. Mechanic just quoted me $2400 to fix this issue. I can fix this myself!
i have this same problem on chrysler 200...
So how about an issue where I have hot and cold but no front vents. ?
I feel like I need to make a trip to Canada as I have had this done 3 times already
This was the best solution I've seen for a jammed blend door. It was a life saver.
Great solution....I have a Commander with the passenger side not going to all cold.....Stays cool not cold....Drivers side perfect.....How hard is that side to do?
My Commander passenger side is stuck too. Just recently had to replace one of the T couplings that went into the heater core as well. I'll be trying this soon. Hope we have luck!
Mine also!
Thank you for taking the time to share your discovery! Much misery is avoided thanks to you!
No flow air to the feets only front defrost site!!
realy realy cool! genius!
That's actually smart
You're a genius that's a brilliant idea good job thanks man you save me a shitload of work
Yea they just told my cousin $2500 to replace the whole thing
Oh plus the $300 for the box
How do you make any money?
Wow you save me thank you
That's great engineering !
Sometimes a fix like this is what is required.
I have this same issue but it has a big chunk of melted stick glue/ seal stuck in there. I looked in with a bore camera and I am trying to figure out how to get that out of there. I will try again tomorrow.
Well did you end up getting the seal out?
What the heck is a clapit?
Great job man
It's a greal idea.
Excellent! Nice work!
Good job
Great fix!!!!
That was smart man! Good stuff. I am trying to find out an issue with my Jeep too where it makes a weird clicking noise on the passenger side when I turn off the jeep. It only last about 10 seconds clicking and then it goes away.
My research is taking me to the blend door actuator but after looking at your video and seeing how that whole thing works, I think that part with the teeth on mine are broken. What is confusing me is that the AC and heat work so far, it just makes that weird clicking sound. Another video said that these actuators go into neutral mode after turning off, so that's why I think it's the teeth. Any input you can give?
Have you ever ran into a clicking sound coming from the dashboard after 2 minutes of turning off the car?
Gear is stripped. That is why it clicks. I'm told not to buy the Dorman replacement but buy OEM gear/ solenoid.
Hard to tell without actually seeing the vehicule
McGuyver
Reto fit
Oh man this is amazing, I think I have a very similar issue with my 2015 Journey. I'm in Montreal, I might give you a call!!!
Anytime ... google my shop Lasalle Auto Pneus
@@AlexTheMechanic i got 98 jeep Cherokee would it be on my right or left. My door are stuck only hot air comes out.
Nice work
I replaced the gear just a couple months ago. Same driver side. 2012. When I pulled the actuator I felt the gear was sticking. But I didn’t think much of it. Replaced the gear and called it a day. It is getting cold out so I didn’t change the temp. But it popped again today. Not sure why as I didn’t change the temp. BUT I think it is exactly what you’re showcasing here. Fortunately when I ordered the gear it came with 2 and they are thicker than oem. So I am going to try this screw mod for sure!
Adding the screw to limit rotation was my idea too and worked perfectly. I used #4-40 drill & tap for SHCS. 2 years later now drivers side needs the same fix
Genius
Man this is the best explanation I have seen . Have a 2015 Dodge Journey that hardly blows hot in the winter. Great Mechanic you are!
Thanks a lot Alex. You Rock ! Such an excellent solution. I'm having this problem in my Nissan and I plan to try it out.
Mine has stuck twice on the Passenger side. It's not a rubber seal on the air blend doors, it's some sort of foam, composite that is glued on, heat might be part of it degrading but its not melting, the seal is literally breaking down into a gooey tar like strips that are like glue traps. If the seal keeps its shape somewhat it might just glue itself open or closed, and you might be able to unstick the seal and free up the jam by playing with the drive externally. But both times my jammed, the seal folded over and jammed into adjacent places stuck the door tight, I had to remove the floor vent doors to fit my hand inside the HVAC and unjammed it from there. This last time, I just tore out anything left of the seal, I'll just leave the door unsealed. This is ridiculous, if you're going bury something under the dash that will cost $1200 in labor to repair, it should be over-engineered to be trouble free, instead it is under-engineered and flimsy with poor materials and prone to failure more than once during the life of the vehicle...... ....its not just the Grand Cherokee, nor Chrysler vehicles, its most of the industry has gone to this type of HVAC for the last 25 years, and they still haven't caught on that they need to improve these designs to be more durable and trouble free.
Great video. I’m starting my blend door project and this info is very helpful. Now a sub.
Just want to let everybody know who has no heat. weas working on the Jeep 2010 . we did all the blend doors .still had no heat .after a bunch of messing around we finally figured out the water pump was bad even though the vehicle didn't overheat.
It probably jammed because the last guy didn't synch the actuators.
So what is the procedure to synchronize the actuators on a 15 - later Challenger/Charger?
Just wanted to say that this was a great inspiration for an expensive part (hvac door and unit) that is poorly designed and likely to repeat the issue eventually. I did this fix for my dad's cherokee and it worked brilliantly.
This video helped me out tremendously, and YOU'RE THE MAN ALEX!!! Thank you, saved me and my customer time and money
Dont own this car or have this problem ... But pretty freaking cool man .. Awesome fix ! The definition of Necessity is the mother of invention!
this is exactly the problem I’m having on the passenger side of my 2015 dodge grand caravan…FYI, I spent over $8K purchasing it. I took actuator off passenger side and it’s working just fine so thank goodness the gears have not broken yet. Thank you so much for this video and showing us all this creative fix! There is no way I could afford to replace the whole HVAC system. On another note, has a Chrysler had a lawsuit over this? It seems like it’s happening to a lot of people reading the comments and the fact that it’s an $1800 fix is pretty crazy!
Thats awesome. Well done figuring it out for a fix instead of replacing. Or charging the guy way to much money.
Thanks for that awesome 👏 explanations God bless you!
Nice job I was just quoted $2055 for replacing the air box as my blend door on driver side is broken. Sonit all has to come out shitty design.
