I play Puyo Puyo Tetris a lot and I could never use the Pro Controller for Tetris because of the constant misdrops, so I had to use the JoyCon Grip. I did this tape mod and wow; oh, did it fix the problem. I had a half hour session of Tetris and only had one misdrop (my own fault, too). Thanks, SpawnWave. ❤️
I always wanted to do this fix but I was too afraid to screw up my controller somehow, thank you for uploading this, I just spent my afternoon following your guide and now it works perfectly! Managing the ribbon cables was the hardest part for me since I'm not used to do this kind of stuff, but once you get the hang of it it becomes pretty simple.
It works much better now for fighting games, I tested it in street fighter 3th anniversary and king of fighters 98 and inputs are so much easier to do.
The Wii U gamepad controller did the same thing. It happened all of the time, I'd be running past a vine or a door, and without trying to, I'd be going up a vine or going through a door. It messed up a lot of my runs through Super Mario Maker. (I guess it was more of an UP problem than anything, as I don't remember a lot of unintentional DOWNs)
Thank you! I've been thinking about different controllers to get for a better D pad. This is a much better idea I didn't think of! So much money saved!
I was gonna try this because my D-pad has been getting worse over the past month or so. The screws are dug in so tight that there's no way to get them out without stripping them. Thanks Nintendo.
Thanks. I plan on fixing my Pro Controller tomorrow. I have this video saved just in case. Edit: Geez, you made this look too easy. I tried doing it myself and it took me four hours, constantly putting on the shells and off trying to fix the Control Pad. Four hours later, and the Control Pad isn't fixed, my shoulder buttons aren't working anymore, and I'm fed up. I can't say I enjoyed my experience and it definitely wasn't worth it. I guess I'm not good at stuff like this. I'll recycle this and take my chance by buying a new one.
I appreciate that you only taped the d-pad button terminals, and did not increase the height of the center nub. I find it useful to know that just taping the terminals makes such a big difference.
Hi man, thanks a lot for the guide, IT REALLY WORKS! I was afraid to open my brand new Pro Controller but it figured it was worth it, so I tried. I watch your videos ever since the one when you fixed the first joycon whireless antenna. Thanks again and please keep bringing quality content like this.
I've had a pro controller for about 3 years now. And hardly, maybe even never I've occurred this problem. Until I got these Pac-Man games, 99 and CE2+ and man... it was bad. I definitely try this out and hopefully it will work as well. Thanks for the video!
You don't need to press left and right rapidly to "simulate" up and down presses. Just hold your thumb on the very right top corner of the D-pad right arrow. Make sure all your weight is going to the top of the right arrow. It will register an up 100% on my pro controller.
Given the price of the pro controller, this should not be an issue. There's so much about the Switch and its official accessories that screams lazy, rushed design.
Oh, man. I am so late to this. haha. I just finished Celeste, all of the B-Sides and C-sides as well, and I had so many issues with accidentally dashing at angles when I was trying to dash straight (up, down, left, or right). On the B-Sides and C-Sides, especially, it became infuriating after long crazy routes, I would die because of an accidental input like that. Thank you for looking into this and even sharing a simple mod. I just fixed two Gamecube controllers for a friend recently, so I was hoping I didn't have to do too much with my Xenoblade Pro Controller. But thanks to your video, this sounds super-easy and something I can do on a short break. Thanks, man!
They (or Hori, or Shapeways) just need to make a replacement plastic d-pad that has a bigger half-sphere “ball” on the bottom center, to allow the pad to “rock” back and forth. I wonder if one could use a NES/SNES/WiiUpro d-pad as a replacement?
They did the "scratching top screen" factory defect on 3DS(all models) and recently the famous Joycon drift. They aren't testing well their products anymore.
I rarely use the d-pad, so I didn't notice how bad it was until I picked up Rayman Legends. I always play 2D platformers with a d-pad and jesus christ, the pro controller's d-pad is fucking _terrible._ I don't understand how they botched it so badly because the rest of the controller is great.
I've looked at images of the Switch Pro Controller's D-pad to see why you can push all 4 directions, and I did encounter this same problem on other 3rd party controllers in the past, and I've been able to fix them all. The solution is simple: you need to raise the stick in the center until you can barely push the center of the D-pad.
I tried this on a generic Pro controller from Amazon since I had the same issue with the d-pad when pressing left or up. I put the piece of tape on the upper sensor and it fixed it.
I don't know how common this is in modern controllers, but as a retro enthusiast who gets a lot of decades old controllers that I have to open up and clean before using, having the board and components and everything just sit comfortably in the bottom half of the controller like that, AND the plate holding the buttons into the top half, is a GODSEND. I didn't think I'd have the confidence to do this simple mod before seeing this, but now it's definitely something I'll take on. Now if only there was a way to make the dpad more clicky, like the Joy Con buttons or the DS family's dpads. Is that all to do with the strength, thickness, and recoil of the rubber membrane, or is it something else?
I haven't actually bothered to look but I'm really surprised if there isn't somebody out there selling some type of pre-made mod kit for this that either has a singular piece of tape or sticker that you would be able to slap on it.
If you replace the controller shell with one from the other tech wave video you should go ahead and apply this fix to the dpad while you have the controller apart.
Thanks for making a video about this! Just yesterday, I was looking into this issue online because I had noticed it when I played Splatoon 2 and the d-pad would make me super-jump to a different player instead of spawn. I began to worry because I plan to get Dragon Ball Fighter Z when it releases on Switch, and the idea of those mis-inputs sounded infuriating. I don’t really see Nintendo releasing a new pro-controller distinguished separately from the standard pro-controllers to address this flaw, but they should really update the hardware of the controller in newer releases so the flaw is corrected.
I've actually noticed the up/down press issue actually can have the inverse, where pressing down occasionally went to the right. I noticed it while playing Xenoblade2, occasionally I'd switch to the wrong blade. In the Torna DLC game too, I'd occasionally do a vanguard switch (up/down) when doing blade switches (left) or talent arts (right), or do a talent art (right) when trying to do a quick vanguard switch (up/down).
Excellent tech wave video Jon(SW). This is a really neat mod for the Pro-Con but i am also hoping that Nintendo will release a newer Pro-Con with a much better D-Pad abit like the SNES D-Pad.
Makes me sad as a die hard Nintendo person, They invented the D-pad and had some of the BEST dpads n controllers ever made (Nes,SNES dpads) hell even the wiimote dpad was good, Nintendo has the most loyal fans I feel like they take advantage of us knowing we’ll always keep buying they’re products for alot of money even if they’re quality slips a bit which they’re right but that dosent make IT right
To test it don't go back and forth rapidly just hold one arrow and rock your finger perpendicular to it. Eg hold the right arrow and while still holding it rock up and down. It will register up and down inputs. My controller is particularly terrible I find. For me the tape mod doesn't work. I spent hours taping various configs at various heights and it's still not good.
I was one of the people complaining about the 4buttons on the joycons and bought a Pro Controller right off the bat. I play a lot of 2D platformers like Sonic Mania, Bloodstained or Celeste. As it turns out, The D-Pad does’t cut it and i actually use the Joycons which ironically turned out to be really accurate. Still not perfect though as the button layout causes the right thumb to touch the right analog stick.
I'll be goddamned, it works. I covered a little less than half on each contact. Testing on multiple games and I don't think I've had a single incorrect input. It is a shame that such an expensive controller requires such a fix though.
I followed exactly where you placed your tape and it worked perfectly I've seen some other guides say to place it halfway but that doesn't work just a small bit onto it
Noticed this issue at launch when trying to swap weapons in BotW; using the D-pad sometime led to incorrect input, so the wrong gear would display. Not a huge deal, since it corrects when your finger pressure is adjusted, but the issue is there.
I might have to apply this fix on my controller. This will prove very useful for games like Mega Man. Don't want to slide into a pit when I mean to jump over it afterall lol.
Now I’d love to see you address the JoyCon drift issue and see if there is a good fix there. My launch-day left JoyCon has it bad as of about a month ago.
Definitely gonna try this when I get home! I love the pro control but I really hate the d pad it’s so simple I can’t play blaze blue due to the d pad always inputing different inputs.
If you don't want to be able to press all four points at once, surely you could stick in a small bit of plastic (or some such) in the centre to act as a pivot point?
Got a Xenoblade Pro controller with the game last year and trying to play Tiger Tiger with the dpad normally was a nightmare. I ended up taping a bit more than you did The contacts have notches around the midways point on the sides. I taped up to, but not over, those notches and my problems went away. These days I use a Brook X One adapter to play with Xbox Elite controller, but at least I can now use the Pro Controller's dpad if I have to. Been meaning to get one of the joycon cover replacements that give you a dpad, but I'm still holding out hope for a more ergonomic set of joycons meant exclusively for attached portable mode to come out.
The d-pad is like this so you can press all 4 directions at the same time, which you can also do on the joy Con, so it doesn't technically have less functionality
My left analog has gone off the reservation. Broke it down an cleaned it. Performance was fine for about a day. Mines the Splatoon one and strangely that variant seems to commonly have the issue.
Great video for improving the D-pad I’m not an aficionado when it comes to this. My only concern is the residue build up on the board that the tape would leave
Thanks for this video, I ended up doing it myself and it did the trick. I did have to open up the controller to put more tape though, covering about half of each point, so how much you need to put could vary. I also scared myself when one of my shoulder buttons didn't work upon putting it back together, but it was just the little ribbon cable not being put back in all the way. Those things are tricky!
I tried to play Tetris 99 with a Pro last week, to see if it was as bad as I remembered, & I placed 97th. Then, I switched to playing it using JoyCon & placed in the top 10, the very next round. The Switch Pro D-Pad is absolute trash. Thanks for the tip!
0:50 That seems to happen to me with up/down. It’s gotten me killed in the X Collection 2 by crushers that you’d have to dodge by ducking. While ducking, it might register right, which sometimes mean crushing.
@@awkwardone It has. Try pressing left-leftdown-down quickly. The Dpad stucks on that corner, you can't do a smooth transiction between inputs. It is also prone to register up/down depending how you press right/left. The internet has lied to me about "best dpad ever", best Dpad is from 3DS.
I just gave up on the idea of using the D-Pad for Celeste and went with the Joystick (I know, right?). But now with the Hatsune Miku game, it's simply IMPOSSIBLE to get the overlapped commands without listening like 3 other random button presses at every pad press, destroying the combo. It's INFURIATING. I was about to order the Pro30+ as I read the it has the best Switch d-pad, but then this came up! Definitely gonna try this tomorrow. Thanks!
You wouldn't have this issue to begin with if they just used metal domes for making the contact instead of rubber. 3DS D-Pad is an excellent example of this
PLEASE make a video of you taking apart the button side of the controller with the shoulder buttons. Your in depth video only goes where you take both sides apart, but not when you take apart the front face.
I did this with my original pro controller. Did nearly half of each points, plus I raised the d pads pivot by folding a small piece of tape twice. The controller works near perfect now (sporadic up registers still when trying to do certain moves that involve right on the dpad for fighting games, but other 2D games are perfect)
Tried this in my launch Pro Controller. There's a definite improvement, but it's still no good for Tetris. Makes the NES games on the online way better, though. I'm sure the tape trick applied to the Xeno Pro Controller as in the case of your video would give me similar results to yours.
With my controller, it seems way worse than you are making it out to be. If I press right or left, it's roughly a 33% chance of doing what I want every time, pressing back and forth rapidly is not necessary, it feels almost 100% random which direction the left and right sides will do, up and down work perfectly.
Ophi Green I also have serious issue with my d-pad. It seems that the level of defect between controllers varies as some report it as sometimes not registering correctly while others have unfunctioning d-pads
D pad on this controller is a disgrace. Can’t believe how bad it is from the company that defined it.
Indeed.

In all honesty, the D-pad should be perfect if i'm paying the full price of the controller.
IF it was as good as the 8bitdo one then I would of purchased one a LONG time ago.
Thank you! I tried this on my pro controller today and it has made a world of difference to my performance in Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled.
I don't have a Switch Pro Controller but I tested it on my 360 controller for my PC games, and it worked great. Thanks John, thumbs up emoji ;)
This method actually works, I did it for myself and now my D-Pad works way better now. Thanks Shawn.
Very cool fix! Liked!
WOW ITS YOU
Thank you! I've been thinking about different controllers to get for a better D pad. This is a much better idea I didn't think of! So much money saved!
Is a real issue in Zelda because of you're trying to switch weapons, you call your horse and alert all of the enemies around
Oh wow! That sucks!!
Also with rhythm games. I cant do the very quick spams
Title should be 'Dude fixes years of corporate R&D with tape'.
Very informative. I'll be replacing my Pro Controller shells next week anyway so this is a great idea.
I was gonna try this because my D-pad has been getting worse over the past month or so. The screws are dug in so tight that there's no way to get them out without stripping them.
Thanks Nintendo.
Exactly. Tried two jewellery screwdriver kits and not one was even close to not stripping them.
Use electrical tape. Scotch is prone to static and could (even if unlikely) damage a sensitive IC.
I used electrical tape but it felt too thick... harder to push buttons.
I've had a pro controller for about 3 years now. And hardly, maybe even never I've occurred this problem. Until I got these Pac-Man games, 99 and CE2+ and man... it was bad. I definitely try this out and hopefully it will work as well. Thanks for the video!
I applied this fix on my pro controller, had to adjust the tape a few times but made it 100% better.
watched already over the weeks some of your content but this video made me subscribe :)
That was totally hit the point when you mentioned Puyo Puyo Tetris. It worked!
Thanks, man!
no i am way late
Yes!! I can't wait to do this! Sadly tho, my junk drawer is a little sad rite now: no scissors or tape..
Why would Nintendo let something like this happened? They need to do a better job on there quality control.
It’s not quality control, it’s just poor design
They did the "scratching top screen" factory defect on 3DS(all models) and recently the famous Joycon drift. They aren't testing well their products anymore.
I rarely use the d-pad, so I didn't notice how bad it was until I picked up Rayman Legends. I always play 2D platformers with a d-pad and jesus christ, the pro controller's d-pad is fucking _terrible._ I don't understand how they botched it so badly because the rest of the controller is great.
I did this a long time ago with my Splatoon Pro Controller... Worked like a charm... Never needed to with my Xenoblade 2 one...
I didn't notice this dpad issues until I played The Legend of Zelda on the NES app. Link would just move eradically
This is one of those shower thought Eureka moments.
Great video. This totally helped me out with fighting games! I can finally do quarter circles.
Makes me sad as a die hard Nintendo person, They invented the D-pad and had some of the BEST dpads n controllers ever made (Nes,SNES dpads) hell even the wiimote dpad was good, Nintendo has the most loyal fans I feel like they take advantage of us knowing we’ll always keep buying they’re products for alot of money even if they’re quality slips a bit which they’re right but that dosent make IT right
As a squid who is physically incapable of going 5 seconds without screaming “BOOYAH” this puts my favorite hobby in mortal danger.
Might do this, seems very interesting. I could never use my pro controller D-Pad with puyo puyo tetris.
Damn, this advice looks useful to any controller where I wish the dpad had stiffer inputs.
Really cool video! This was so interesting. I don't have a pro controller, but if I did, I probably would be too scared to take it apart. Lol.
TheYellowKazoo Me too
Thank you. This problem has been driving me crazy.
I have this issue with both of my pro controllers but for Puyo Tetris I absolutely adore the 4 buttons on the left joycon.
I followed exactly where you placed your tape and it worked perfectly I've seen some other guides say to place it halfway but that doesn't work just a small bit onto it
I think the four directional buttons on the left joycon work really well for Puyo Puyo Tetris
I've just done this following your guide. Cheers.
Hey, tape fix author here. Cool video :D Happy to see my post mentioned here, thanks!
Noticed this issue at launch when trying to swap weapons in BotW; using the D-pad sometime led to incorrect input, so the wrong gear would display. Not a huge deal, since it corrects when your finger pressure is adjusted, but the issue is there.
dude this pisses me off so much. i just spent 70 bucks on this thing and the dpad hardly works. playing tetris 99 with this sucks
Did that. Improved the D Pad! Thanks
Hey, this mod fixed my 8bitdo SN30 pro ghost diagonals! Thanks!
Definitely gonna try this when I get home!
I love the pro control but I really hate the d pad it’s so simple I can’t play blaze blue due to the d pad always inputing different inputs.
7:00 Is that Mega Man?? Which game is it? It looks a bit different that what I know. It's like a mixture of MM and MMX.
Found it. Game is called: 20XX
Thanks guys you've been great help.
If you don't want to be able to press all four points at once, surely you could stick in a small bit of plastic (or some such) in the centre to act as a pivot point?
I have flex tape and I’m ready to make the ultimate modded controller with the most unnoticeable physical change.
Those things are tricky!
i wonder how reliable the D pad would be or if it would even work if you cut it into 4 buttons like the ps4 controllers dpad is
The miss presses also occur when you press down or up on the d-pad and they can register a left or right
I tried to play Tetris 99 with a Pro last week, to see if it was as bad as I remembered, & I placed 97th. Then, I switched to playing it using JoyCon & placed in the top 10, the very next round. The Switch Pro D-Pad is absolute trash. Thanks for the tip!
On Tetris the joy on dpad is phenomenal
0:50 That seems to happen to me with up/down. It’s gotten me killed in the X Collection 2 by crushers that you’d have to dodge by ducking. While ducking, it might register right, which sometimes mean crushing.
i just bought a Snes 30 pro for 2D and retro games, don't wanna risk destroying my pro controller
Good idea, I might do that as well
SF30 Pro has issues with the dpad as well, people are doing the same fix on that
Mikul Bikul Really I haven't seen any?
Thanks!
did it work?
@@EnricAlways as a fellow Project Diva player, no. It still register other directions from time to time
What was that abbout pressing “all four buttons at the same time”? Do you mean all four directions?
Love this!!!! Cause my d pad was driving me crazy!
Thanks
Even just for Breath of the Wild, changing items is a nightmare, I just use joycons.
Ophi Green I also have serious issue with my d-pad. It seems that the level of defect between controllers varies as some report it as sometimes not registering correctly while others have unfunctioning d-pads
The Xenoblade version of the controller is known to be a bit better than the original pro.
Huh...I have used my Pro Controller for a year, and I have never noticed an issue. Great video just in case I do notice something though!
