Anyone else listening in 2024?
Me
me and surprisingly can remember most of the words....always a favorite at school discos 😀
Yes!
Yeah me, great song!
Yep, I'm an old git..........the best kind
Just seen her in concert supporting level 42, still has a great voice.
This WAS a great song and still sounds great 41 years later, that's for sure ☺️
I've just realised why it sounds so good: it was produced by genius Tony Mansfield, previously the lead singer of New Musik. He was almost as good a producer as Trevor Horn in my opinion.
...Ah, the 80s. For me the pinnacle of musical creativity and diversity. Genuine feel good pop music! Little wonder the country is in the state it is when you look at today's musical creativity!
At the time we didn’t realise how good those days were - now it is clear
Haha, each to his own, I guess.
I don't think those of a younger disposition quite realise how big TOTP was back in the day ..... I mean, the world stopped at 7.30pm on Thursday nights when I was a lad because everyone flocked to the TV to watch the show and to hell with whatever else was going on. It was an institution and yeah, I miss it.
Smarty 5 ,...Ditto we lived for thursday nights
Thats true I remeber dropping whatever i was doing and running back home to catch it, it was THE most important t.v show. I used to get really annoyed if someone was talking in the living room when it was on too. Tomorrow's world was always on before TOTP.
Yeah, it regularly had 20 million viewers when the population of the country was 54 million.
Loved Thursday nights. Top the best. You got to see fav groups and songs. Ah the days.
The younger generation today would be in horror at the realisation we only had three tv channels..(before c4)...and no dedicated music channel. totp's WAS our music channel. Aahhh...Pans people..legs & co.. ;)...We also had our radio's tuned to pirate stations such as Rhonda...Jackie...Caroline...memories eh?
Brilliant song, this song and singer did not get the recognition it deserved, I still like this song all these years on and I still play it at any disco's I do, brilliant Mari 👍👍👍
Total bull , they were huge in the 80s and marie is still doing 5he rounds
I still think this is fantastic 👏
Absolutely Tim well said! 😊

One of the things that makes this song so great is the irony of the lyrics.
Oh to be back in those days again..
Pure, undiluted, feelgood fun pop song! Brilliant.
21 when this came out, remember it like it was yesterday.
Another poptastic tune from 1982........What a year.....
i second that!
Agree. 1982 was a great year for music!
The fantastic 80s
Along with the jam madness dexys all had great songs in 82
Not 'alf!
Saw Mari the other weekend as she was supporting Level 42, she still sounds as good as she does here
loved her hairstyle and of course she was gorgeous too
I don't know why this song makes me so happy, it just does.
Partly because it was produced by Tony Mansfield, who was a total genius at producing, (along with people like Trevor Horn).
My favourite female voice of the 80’s (she’s still great).
Its a shame this is never played on the radio anymore.
It is a pity, wonderful song
It was released as a single with no support in Australia. Showpeople album never made it here. This clip was only seen here in the mid 90s on TOTPops retro shows. It made the discerning few sit up.
Was today
And today
I don't even know how I managed to hear it in the US but so glad I did.
One of those great songs from the 80s that people might not remember. Do some women marry for money or love. Money can get you the house and fancy car. The couple still have to be able to get on with each other. I watched Totps on a Thursday night with just 1 telly 📺 the size of a small box in the 80s Limerick Ireland.❤😅😊
Brilliant song by Mari Wilson, she was so underrated….Thank you Mari!!
Simply great brings back happy memories of great days long gone good on you Marie
Fantastic voice Fantastic song Fantastic performance
Where? Do you have a link?
met mari at a paul young concert at hammersmith odeon nearly got knocked out by the beehive. great 80s
Such a stunning voice ❤️
Brilliant song by a wonderful, caring person.
Camper than a tent shop! Love it. Cheers me up whenever I watch it. Thank you Mary❤.
Great song 😀 Mari’s vocals remind me of the much missed singer Cristina
Cristina was great - knew her slightly XMAS WRAPPING
Mari has always been close to my heart. Loved her style and voice. Her show in Toronto in the early 80s was fabulously campy. We cheered like crazy. What a night and what a singer.
More electronic than I remember. Adored this tune back int he summer of 1982.
The producer is a master of electronic music.
yes, Tony Mansfield from New Musik produced it
Last night at work a colleague gave me a tray of stuff I really didn't want at 9 on a Friday evening. So, kind of sarcastically, I said to him "Thanks. Just what I always wanted." And within 2 seconds the pair of us were in synch singing the chorus from a certain 1982 'beehive' song. No prizes for guessing the song in question. But doesn't that show how foot-tapping, catchy, singalong music stays with you from decades ago......?
Great story
@@charles5596 Glad you appreciated it. That was about 6 weeks ago now, and the pair of us still sing "I've got...... just what I always wanted" whenever we walk past each other on the work floor!
Saw her last night in Llandudno, she was supporting Level 42 and she, and her band were fabulous. Level 42 is like a great Christmas dinner, and their support acts are Fortnum and Mason crackers. I'd go and see her gigging in her own right. Great music.
Great song and voice
I just heard this song on the radio and I haven't heard it in about 30 years, memories of when I was 12 😁
Great song ,brings back memories
@@charles5596 indeed
I was 17 when this song came out. Trendy kid that I was, it was always the British music that I thought was the coolest. I sought out every import and combed news stands for issues of NME and Melody Maker. A friend of mine bought the import of Mari Wilson’s album and we loved the 60’s nostalgia, echoes of our childhood. Me and my friends went to see her at the once legendary, now defunct nightclub, The I-Beam on Haight Street in San Francisco. It was a night I still remember. We were young, dressed in thrift store vintage clothes, running with the in-crowd, our fingers on the pulse of the moment. What times those were...
Wow 😮
Awesome memories x
A dream to visit such places, I’m the same age
Us Brits were always the best. :)
Me too
I still love this tune. It was Number 8 when I was just 5 years and I can still remember her performing this on TOTP and Pebble Mill at One!
I was 9 when this came out, and I just listened to it again for the first time in years. It still sounds brilliant, what a voice
Me too.
Sursprised the song hasn't ever been covered(to my knowledge)because it's a great pop song.
I was 17. Still brilliant 👏
I was 10
Mari was always able to show people how well she could sing.
What a wonderful voice!
She still sounds as good today
Most people put in a comment regarding a song about memories etc ..I've no memories regarding this song..I just love it..I also adore the video..x
Mari wilson and the wilsations , what a class act
I was 11 years old in 1982. I always liked the song but never appreciated her *incredible* voice. *WOW!!* Just listen to her vibrato. Just perfect.
Fabulous. She had a great voice...and the song was class
Whaddaya mean HAD a great voice? She's still going y'know, still belting 'em out.
Bloody brilliant. ☺
she sure did have a good voice
l love this tune man reminds me very first at years at primary school good song what happened to Mary Willson
Yeah but stupid hair
The Queen of the beehive
Such an awesome vibe of pure 80's
Love Mari Wilson met her a couple of times .Saw her play Dusty Springfield in Bristol she was great
Brilliant song and great voice.
Love the hair! Camporama !!! Brilliant
Epic tune from a vintage year. Love the trumpet !
Such memories. 😊
I love Mari..still going strong..x
I remember the Radio 1 jingle “ Mike Reid,just what I always wanted “😆😆🇬🇧❤️
Fantastic voice and great pitch!
Love it, love it love it. One of my fave pop songs because it always makes me smile!!
She needs to come back n join 80s rewind
What a great catchy song ,love that.
*This song makes me smile..., and it always has... :)*
Wow ....first few seconds and a wave of nostalgia comes flooding in.... born in mid 70s and had the pleasure of growing up in the 80s ... great song 🎵 ❤
This lady has an amazing voice. Does a great cover of cry me a river. Stay safe everyone.
You too Robert
i saw this darling girl in sheffield a few times she was stunning happy memories of days gone by ,, i dressed like her WOW WOW WOW X
"I dressed like her"...so did my brother...lol
I wonder what I would look like now with a beehive hairstyle and hot pants at 70 lol good old days x I would proberbly get arrested lol
Great performance of a brilliant song from the best music show ever Top Of The Pops !!!
There were two really catchy songs in the charts in September 1982 which have been pretty much forgotten about: this was one of them, the other was Saddle Up by David Christie.
What a great song/singer. What happened to those sleek mics from 70s/80s? Never saw em again. Someone, please take me back to the 80s. I miss the 80s a lot.
love that last assault on the drums, like one of the backing singers got carried away with their gesticulations to the routine and backed into the drum kit, knocking it over lol. Love this, such a happy feelgood tune. Remember Mari recording a jingle for Mike Read based on it - Mike Read...just what I always wanted! Er, no ta.
She did the same for David "Kid" Jensen using her hit "Baby It's True"
God I loved this song when I was growing up! 😂
Best times at the bbc
Proper BeeHive 🙂a moments silence to remember the many cans of hairspray that laid down their lives for a truly worthy cause
I just posted in FB (I followed the link here) I worked in the Queens Hotel in Brighton and she needed hairspray. The Manager was able to ring the in house hairdresser and get some - no late night supermarkets in those days.
Class act.
Sensational track.
October 1982, Mari Wilson (at that time 28), had a brilliant UK No. 8 Hit, with a great performance, a great trumpet-solo in the middle and excellent drums. The song was written by Teddy Johns (Tot Taylor).
Fabulous song fabulous singer.
A great song stands up today.
Wish I could go back
Haven't heard this in decades
I've included this on a new playlist I've just set up on RUclips featuring what I'm calling less well-known 80s hits, the sort of songs you never hear on the 80s radio stations these days: ruclips.net/p/PL6oCQqv2KW6XlQvjxSs0wvsjQrn9WXc9w
Tony Mansfield makes a fantastic job of just about everything he touches. Genius.
Great! Makes me smile. 😊
1980s TOTP were vintage times
OMG I think I haven't heard of this song for almost 40 years!!!!!
Still one of my all time favourites. Little classic.
Мари великолепна: спору нет!!
The Neasden Queen of Soul! ❤️
Always liked this
Brilliant sing, brilliant singer. And Mari's backing singers are absolutely superb - real entertainers👍
You may be interested to know that the actress Michelle Collins was one her Wilsations backing singers...but not here..you can look it up though..still performing, the hair not so high though...
Tony Mansfield produced some great records. Love her album this is from.
i love this track simply great
I was soooooo in love with this lady and maybe still am
Simply great!
The 80's were amazing for music. So much romantic feeling in songs. Now its all like bang me baby.
Saw here in Pathfoot in Stirling Uni back around 80/81
Loved her big smile and beautiful eyes x
can barely see her eyes. Still, a great song though
the eighties were so great for pop.
Great 😊song
2020: We need all the happy mood songs we can get this year...bet you never saw this coming when you posted your comment?
Thought I knew all the 80s hits. This one feels like a different world existed at the time and it seems that it was Britain. Pop Hits in England sometimes strayed far from America's preferences. I really like this. Totally different from anything I've ever heard from the decade!
I remember watching this 1st time round. I was 17. Happier times.
This music is from America. Probably Motown ... or Buddy Holly.
@@ColtraneTaylor It was probably influenced by Motown or Holly for sure...as were the Beatles...but it was a British songwriter. Also, the British went through a retro phase in the 80s . Stray Cats was an example of a group that was doing stuff at that time...but much of that was stuff I've never heard of before. The British retro genre was a very different genre. Tracey Ullman was the same exact thing. Never heard those songs in the US ever, but they were huge hits in the UK.
@@masterhendy I just like both US and UK tunes. I see a lot of close mindedness in both countries, even when the music sounds identical. That's incredible.
@@ColtraneTaylor Agreed. I like both. I blame it on the radio stations for not thinking outside the box. We only hear what the US radio stations think we want to hear (usually).
Loved this ❤
Oh to be 20 again. This takes me right back.
Fab song great great vocals and humorous backing...just what i always wanted.
Great, I'm loving it to see Mary Wilson and her Beehive again
She still sings this song now and still sounds good ❤
Who remembers the Radio jingle to this tune " Oh listen to Andy Peebles ,"
Great voice😁👍
1980s s0ng with a 1960s vibe to it i have always loved this song i was 8 when it was released in 1982 my mum had it on vinyl
How have I never seen/heard this before?!! I love it!
Being 21 at the time this came out, wonderful times and wonderful music. Wish I could go back and change a few things.
Back when pop music could rule the world.
The backing singer in the middle looks like he's there to do a job rather than put on a show. And he looks a bit like the twitty bloke from Dirty Dancing, the boss man's son
I had a casette recording of Mari's concert played on Radio 1 in the 80s - I eventually wore the tape out!
