- I visited Paint Creek Lake on Tuesday 2/22/2022 and I sure am glad I did! I was like a kid in a candy store! I went to the visitor's center located at 504 Reservoir Road, Bainbridge OH and met an awesome gentleman, Mr. Isaac Greene of the US Army Corps of Engineers. I began talking to him by asking questions about the current outflow conditions. After our awesome conversation, I told him how I could not locate any pictures of the dam's construction online. To my surprise, he let me see and take pictures of some original construction proofs and pictures that are in this video! After that I went down and checked out the outflow. The first building I come across that I talk about was not supposed to be that tall, it was originally meant to be much shorter. All it is used for now is a type of depth gauge. Since the Engineers now have many other more efficient ways to check depth and flow, the building is scheduled to be demolished.
The outflow tunnel is bored through solid bed rock and 1/8th of a mile long from intake tower to opening. It is shut off and inspected every 5 years.
At the time of this video the gates are open 8.1 feet and letting water out of the lake into paint creek down stream at 5,775 cubic feet a second!!!!
There are 2 gates at the intake tower. I-9 and I-28 which are 9 foot and 28 foot below lake lever during normal summer pool. Depending on which gate the draw from, the water temperature down stream can be controlled.
The tour of the intake tower was icing on the cake! After I finished up filming the outflow, I went to track down Mr. Greene one more time to get all my technical data in check. I did not have any idea that he was going to give me a tour of the intake tower! I really wish I could have filmed that but unfortunately, since it is government property, I was not able to. Due to my line of work, I completely understood and happily left my GoPro and phone in the Jeep.
