Even if you love drawing, the long term practice can suck. Please stop saying that you won't be lazy if you really want to do it. If makes people that really love drawing stop drawing if they don't love every second of drawing. Yes. Drawing is fun, but sometimes it's not fun. Practice and learning isn't always fun. Going to the gym isn't always fun. Everything you learn isn't always fun. It takes hard work which is going to suck at some times. But if you want to get better, you can accept the bad times. That's different.

It's not always fun. I feel you need to learn from well needed mistakes. Recognize them, then your less likely to repeat them. It's the road we travel that makes us who we are. I love painting like I love my wife, not always easy and nice but when everything clicks in it can be magical. That keeps me coming back for more.

Now there's a title that really gets to the point, LOL. My biggest stumbling block while growing up was seeing classmates that could draw SO much better than I. So, I believed for the longest time that it's a talent you are born with and practice wasn't going to help much. It's true that some kids seem to have more of a grasp of art early on than others BUT it still requires So. Much. Practice. I cringe when I think of the years wasted.

LOL first point and I already feel attacked 😭 Every time I try to draw, I'm expecting it to turn out the way I want it and of course it just doesn't. It sucks that I get discouraged by my own art even though I know I have to get through the bad drawings to see the good ones. I always feel like I'm not creative enough and that's one of the factors that gets me down and feel like I won't belong in the creative industry. Then again, I know want to draw and want to draw for a living so I have no choice but to just get on with it.
Thanks for your video really needed this to start the new year right. Hopefully I will be able to develop better habits to truly feel like an artist one day.

2.) not willing to put time and the effort - don’t be lazy

4.) being too afraid to draw and making excuses
5.) not putting in the work

I can draw digitally, and my drawings usually end up looking good; it’s just that when I try it with physically pen & paper I make one too many mistakes and it usually ends up looking mediocre at best.
There’s also all these youtube channels that give you little tutorials expecting you to get it first try, and I never do. I actually just tried drawing Dipper Pines from gravity falls and it ended up looking horrible-even though it’s the most simple possible drawing-which lead me to this video.

I feel like if you have to set aside a specific time with a timer, you don't really want to draw, and you're just doing it for some ego issue. Obviously we gotta force ourselves sometimes, but it shouldn't be so rigid, imo. You should genuinely enjoy the experience. Otherwise, why are you doing it? Spend 30 years doing something you hate so you can get the pat on the head your parents never gave you? Waste of a life, imo.

My prob is that I’m WAY too critical of myself. Patience is a bit of it(or maybe more?), but I hate what I draw and tear out pages upon pages. I do photography but always loved doing other stuff that I’m not so great at....
Instead of keeping things and seeing how I progress, they go in the trash. I used to love to draw as a kid, but I was never this self-critical. Anyhow, thanks for the talk!

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  2 года назад

Thanks for being honest and sharing that! I think we all struggle with this no doubt - even myself at times too. I wouldn't say to not be critical of yourself at all, but to have some kind of balance between just having fun and being critical at times. Just get a sketchbook and fill it up. Leave every page in there, don't tear it out or throw it away. Nobody is great when they start out haha. It takes a lot of time and practice. You don't get buff by going to the gym for one week. It all takes macro patience. Just enjoy the process and have fun. You'll improve just by enjoying what you do. Apply the principles of how you learned photography and got better to drawing as well.

Been drawing for about 2 years now... today was a wake up call
Used to working at things for atleast 1 hour and more, now I was tasked to make a simple semi-cartoonish sketch for an event card
Can't even draw shit right, what took my peers 5 minutes had me working on it for 30 because of how wrong it looked.
Now I understand why people put themselves under a time restraint when sketching

Drawing for a long time with boring things like fruits and stuff in college really makes art sucks even gonna make me hate drawing. Art college these days just wants us to suffer I'm not kidding, even if you put an effort for 5 hours of a detailed sketch the teacher is still gonna be like oh it only took you 5 seconds since the drawng is not good, sketching or drawing is definitely not a right or wrong way of sketching, they can't put a grade on anything subjective. Luckily I didn't give up and even timed myself on a casual OC sketch I felt I have improved a lot cuz I can draw a perfect OC in seconds but sadly college doesn't apprecciate real art they just want the boring stuff.

I know exactly what you mean, I'm glad you said it. Well said. I've always felt like art classes are the worst :( Drawing still lifes and things like that. I remember in college I had to draw a still life of cardboard boxes haha. So boring and we spent like a week or something on it because it was an 18" x 24" drawing or something crazy. Took forever. But not very exciting.

I think people have different motivations and styles. One thing you can do is look for something that motivates you. When you’re not being actively taught it can be difficult to piece together different things you want to or should try, but those are things to look out for and build up. Different people have different incentives. I’m not sure about this area being effective for alot of people, but maybe it works for some of them. Generally “neging” is not a very effective or helpful or good thing. Just my opinion.

"If you think you wanna do it, then you won't be lazy, because you love doing it"
Completely forgetting just how nearly impossible it is to enjoy something when no visible progress is being made, that's why in many fields teachers structure their classes to give students "Early Wins", so that they at least feel like they've accomplished something. You can be the most dedicated person in the world, if you feel you're not making any progress, eventually you'll want to give up.... and probably will...

Good point for sure. I understand. But with drawing (or other similar skill like learning music, etc.) one must realize that progress will be incremental and won't easily be seen in a short amount of time. It will be seen over a longer period of time.

You have no idea how badly I want to draw good. So badlyyy. I've been drawing each and every day for months, taking my time on my drawings but it still sucks. I don't get what I'm doing wrong. But I have been improving little by little. I think I might be rushing things

I wish I was good at drawing. I’m always seeing classmates and family members who are better than me. It brings my confidence down, and I have a very low self esteem because of it. I’m bad at drawing, and I’ll never be good. I didn’t learn anything from this video.

My friend, you will never improve with such a negative attitude. You must change the way you think first before your actions can follow. Maybe this video didn't apply to you and that's fine but if you're not willing to put effort into something and only worry about what everyone else is doing, you will be unhappy. Instead, start little by little thinking positively and just doing your best. Stop comparing yourself to others and others to yourself.

@@SchaeferArt Thanks for the advice. I took it to heart and I’m seeing improvement. I believe I’ve gone from noob to mediocre. My drawings are improving. Thank you.

Here, I changed my profile pic to a drawing I made of Alistor. I am now confident that my art work is somewhat decent. Hopefully in 10 years I’ll be as good as you Schaefer

My bane is how while i miserably fail in drawing something i instantly start to think
"my style is shit, i suck and literally most drawnings that i ever saw look better than this, i have no potential"
"Man, look at this? If i continue being so bad, how will everyone ever buy my art at all? I'm useless with no future (me assuming that i would even start to sell my art"
"People will never praise my art"
And of course, lack of material, for some reason i have a curse of everytime i actually want to drawn my erasers disappear and i get too lazy to look up so i decide to do it with just a pencil and a pen that i use daily on school
And then i start to agressively scribble on the paper and tryhard drawning untill i get it right
I think I have to control my lack of patience

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  2 года назад

Yes more control of lack of patience, no doubt. When you look back at your comment, you see your issue isn't even about your art at all or the process of creating it. It's about your attitude and thinking in your mind. You gotta work on that first. Change your mindset and attitude. Stop having expectations and just create. Have fun with it. Don't worry about people buying it etc. Try to not be so negative. Just enjoy the moment and love what you do. Do your best. You can do it! :) We all are negative at some point, but the fact that you recognize it is so important. You can change it now. Little by little.
