As a lifelong artist and musician (now 54), I feel that the very WORST thing to ever happen to art is that it became "ART." A completely fake world where a handful of cork-sniffing snobs TELL the world what is genius, brilliant, sublime, meaningful, etc. It's truly nauseating. What moves YOU is ALL that matters. I've seen countless creations from children and people who "can't draw" that are incredibly moving and enjoyable. Furthermore, don't get wrapped up in the end result. ENJOY the remarkable amount of peace, solitude, and healing that comes along with creating something. :)

So true. Art is expression, if you are expressing yourself you are doing it right. Artificially inflating prices just because something is trendy is not art.

Oh there is no healing in creating for me. It's quite the opossite. And I care very much about the results. Why shouldn't I? Like everything the process has to end at some point and then the result is the only thing that remains. I don't care what people think about my art but I care what I think. I would be perfectly happy being the best artist to ever live and no one knowing about that. I wish I could enjoy the process I really do but I can't.

This is amazing! "people who don't produce turds, die of constipation" Sound advice. If you aren't failing, then what are you even learning? And on top of that, be true and real to yourself and your expression. No other opinion matters.

I lost my son in 2019 at 6 years old to leukaemia, having watched him fight it from just 22 months. I restarted making art in a sketchbook (like Danny having stopped as a teen after loving art because you care what idiots think) when sat in hospital rooms as a way to keep my sanity and also inspired by Everyday Matters, to capture my gorgeous boy in ways photos couldn't. Those sketches are so precious to me, way more than photos and having again stopped drawing after losing George and then setting up a children's charity to help children like him while working a full time job in the NHS and being mum to his little sister, this year I had a breakdown and then finally restarted the creative habit that helps me, one drawing at a time. Running a charity is full of highs and lows and today another knock so watching more inspiration from you Danny has really helped. Keep being amazing through art and thank you. ⭐

"What you're running away from isn't the way you put pen to paper, it's fear of who you are. You never escape who you are. Instead, learn to accept and to love it, flaws and all." I drew for the first time after a few years of feeling stuck right after watching this clip. The sentence "it's fear of who you are" just struck me hard. I've been telling everybody that I wanted to resume drawing, but it was hard to start for some reasons. And that was the reason! Thank you so much for putting it to the words. Sometimes it's extremely helpful to hear what you've felt and thought inside your head through others.

For someone who always loved drawing and had several long breaks inbetween sketching (usually years) this the advice that I never received. Adults or teachers would always be negative or too critical. Not much positive praise was said. At 51, I am still glad that my spark of creativity still survived!

I started drawing and painting at the age of 36 as a hobby (zero formal art education) and will be 51 next month. I too had long breaks (years) in between periods of sketching and painting or trying mixed media art and it has taken me a long time to be happy by myself with the 'work' and pieces I produce. I have had friends comment negatively in a backhanded way but also people who say if it makes me happy I should continue and stop caring whether anyone likes it. What matters is I enjoy sketching and painting, even if it means I get one decent piece out of 30 😅. Was happy to read your comment as it's comforting to hear of another person in the same situation. Best wishes to you.

'Otherwise what you're running away from is fear of who you are'. I think this is such a beautiful point. Art pulls out every part of us and puts it on paper. The shadows (literally), the light (literally), and it requires GREAT courage to be willing to witness ourselves in all our colours, shades and forms. The artist journey consists of acceptance (of failure, imperfection, being misunderstood or riduculed, alone before finding others etc), and the fight for or against these truths seems to determine the level of suffering of the journey. Really appreciate the compassion and permission to be human. Thank you

Very helpful, thank you so much 😎😊. It is true with great art, that you do make a lot of bad art first but also find the artworks you do like in the end that even other people can’t appreciate. The biggest one is always self doubt and worrying what people will say about your work. It’s a problem for me and others like me 🥲.

I do want to learn to draw, and that is why I clicked on this video when it showed up in my recommended. However, my true dream is to be an author, to write books, and tell stories.. Every time I have started I get immediately discouraged by failure, and every time that happens it has become harder and harder to start again when sitting in front of that blank page. This video definitely applies to more than just drawing, or painting. I needed to see this video today. Thank you.

I love that "People that never produce turds die of constipation" When I was in high school I took art classes from Freshman year through Junior year. My Junior year I took a drawing class and we had to pick out a image from a magazine to draw so I picked Michael Jordan dunking a basketball with his tongue hanging out. We were instructed to take the picture and break it down in 6 blocks. Only work in the blocks we were working on which back then helped me to focus in one area at a time. At the time I didn't think I could draw worth a turd. But my art teacher at the time was impressed with my drawing it was hung in the main hallway at my high school. Mine you that was 26yrs ago and I'm just now getting back into drawing and now I'm producing turds. Also I still can't find my old drawing of Michael Jordan which is a bummer. But I will keep practicing and your encouraging words mean a lot.

drew a "turd", went on RUclips and then saw this. It's true that producing bad drawings can be disheartening but I've learned to love the process of drawing instead of the result and that's helped changed my perspective on drawing and allowed me to simply draw. You gotta accept that many drawings will be bad -- will be turds-- but that's pretty fine. I'm in complete agreement with what was said at the end, "people who never produce turds, die of constipation"

Oh you think I am more put together than Vincent? That's generous. Maybe once I get medicated but right now? Right now the paper bin next to my desk smells like carmenbert cheese. I never threw anything cheese related in there it just started doing that and I accepted it. Haven't cleaned it out yet because the stuff in there can still be a bit more compressed.
I don't know but someonewho painted as much as vincent seems to at least have some sort of structure in their life. I have literally 0 structure, 0 motivation and 0 will to continue. But once or twice a week I still torture myself by drawing. Why? I don't know but I do it. I have to.
