In late 1983 early 1984 Def Leppard released the Pyromaina album & it went on to be the #2 album in the world right now Michael Jackson's Thriller . Then Rick Allen of Def Leppard rolled a Corvette on December 3rd 1984 & even though the band was the next big thing to Michael Jackson & even though they were taking a break from recording their next album which was Hysteria . The band walked away from music until Rick Allen either came back or came to the rest of the band & told the band to replace him because he couldn't do it anymore . Well it took almost 3 years but Rick Allen was able to come back & to this day is still the drummer in the band . Def Leppard's Hysteria album still holds 2 records today . This album is a Mutt Lange production. He had many albums he produced via the formula that were very successful. As far as Dokken, George Lynch can out play the two guitarist from Def Leppsrd at that time. Take another shot at Dokken, there are plenty of great songs to choose from...
Love that you finally got back to Def Leppard and something from Pyromania. Spot-on regarding your assessment of solos and the importance of not straying too far from the groove. The guys in Def Leppard have emphasized this point on many occasions, citing that the solo has to fit with the song rather than be simply a chance for the guitarist to show off amazing speed and technique. They're right of course, and this reminds me of a scene in the sequel to Eddie and The Cruisers (movie): The protagonist was listening to a young shredder showing off his solo prowess. Instead of receiving accolades the kid was dissed. "Ok, then YOU show ME how you'd do it any better!" he shot back. So the seasoned veteran hosted an immediate clinic in guitar solo melodies, tempo, groove and relevance - after which he emphatically stated that "the song has to be able to BREATHE".

Great review Guys but, You guys have it backwards. This song, as You noted, is from 1983, Whereas Hurricane by Scorps came out a years later. So, if anything, Hurricane sounds like this song.
I got your point Ryan. It is what Angus Young does with most of ACDCs guitar solos. Good point. Yo don´t have to shred all the time. The solo must be written for the song, not the other way around.
In my opinion, Def Leppard’s music before the Hysteria album is way better than the music that came after. On through the night, High n Dry & Pyromania are amazing!
The whole dated thing is hilarious when you put it into context. Are the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, or Deep Purple dated? Yes! Does that mean those bands and their catalog aren't great? No. What's funny about Comin' Under Fire, I think it might be the GREATEST song to have never been played live. Most bands at some point in time will eventually play that tune that people have been clamoring for. It's shocking that the band not once decided to put this song in the rotation during the Pyromania tour. Having said that, the set list never really changed on that tour. This song is an absolute gem.
The catchy, almost pop/rock elements of their sound and the progression of their sound into Hysteria can largely be attributed to the producer Mutt Lange. He produced AC/DC prior to this, but Hysteria, post Rick Allen's car accident, was Mutt just completely taking control over the sound. Mutt went on to produce mega smash hit pop country albums for Shania Twain. They also got married, had a kid, then got divorced after he cheated on her with her best friend. Coulda wrote a country song about it. Anyway, Mutt obviously, definitely has an ear for hooks and what is catchy and radio friendly and will sell like crazy worldwide. He is the king of the ear worm. If the guy made ad jingles we'd all be in trouble. That's why you have guys walking around singing, "Man, I Feel Like A Woman," immediately followed by, "man, what the he'll am I singing." People looking at you and you're all embarrassed and sh*t. Ryan be like, "what?that song is.catchy as hell.. Don't act like you don't sing that sh*t too.".😅 BTW, not really hearing what you're hearing in terms of the sound leading up and into the chorus sounding like Rock you like a Hurricane, however you did make me realize the similarity in the sound of the verses. I never really noticed or caught that before.
Def Leppard's Pyromania came out on 20 January 1983. Scorpions' Love at First Sting came out on 27 March 1984. Pat Benatar's Crimes of Passion came out on on 5 August 1980. Adjust opinions accordingly.
You should check out some music analysis of Def Leppard. These guys knew their music theory and were masters at composition. SOme of their songs have very smooth key changes.
What you hear is a great producer (Mutt Lange) taking a band that is a good rock band and polishing their songs and performances into a diamond. Mutt Lange’s first record with Def Leppard was High and Dry. Check that one out. It sounds like a more melodic AC/DC.
They are really beloved for how they treated their drummer after he lost his arm. Great review Guys but, You guys have it backwards. This song, as You noted, is from 1983, Whereas Hurricane by Scorps came out a years later. So, if anything, Hurricane sounds like this song.
Nice boys they just played this live in serious radio killaaaa
I got your point Ryan. It is what Angus Young does with most of ACDCs guitar solos. Good point. Yo don´t have to shred all the time. The solo must be written for the song, not the other way around.
Used to play this and hi n dry cruising in my 67 mustang
Amazing song and album👌🎶
Definitely check out their first two albums they rock a lot more.
You guys should definitely check out Desert Song or She's too Tough off of the Retroactive album. Very overlooked release by Leppard....
Talking about solos, Dokken etc.: Why don't you try "Mr.Scary"? It is an instrumental, but groovy as hell.
Strange that i missed this reaction when uploaded, watching it after the Foolin' reaction....please do the KYUSS MARATHON ASAP
In my opinion, Def Leppard’s music before the Hysteria album is way better than the music that came after. On through the night, High n Dry & Pyromania are amazing!
this was out a year before rock you like a hurricane
The whole dated thing is hilarious when you put it into context. Are the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, or Deep Purple dated? Yes! Does that mean those bands and their catalog aren't great? No. What's funny about Comin' Under Fire, I think it might be the GREATEST song to have never been played live. Most bands at some point in time will eventually play that tune that people have been clamoring for. It's shocking that the band not once decided to put this song in the rotation during the Pyromania tour. Having said that, the set list never really changed on that tour. This song is an absolute gem.
First two albums are the best two albums. Pyromania was their last great album!
You should watch the new live video of them playing this song. Still sounds great.
Def Leppard was, is , and will always be THE best band of all time.
The Pyromania album was pure magic inside and out. 🔥
Check out Rock of Ages and Foolin off same album Pyromania
Pyromania and out of the cellar were awesome gateway albums. Within a couple of years we had master of puppets and reign in blood.
This was before " Rock you like a hurricane
I remember liking high and dry a lot. Other than that they were basic pop rock that infiltrated so much 80s music.
Cool song choice! Mirror Mirror or Bringin' on the Heartbreak would be my picks for the next one
Tasteful Phrasing beats "shredding" ANY day of the week!
The "Into The Fire" critique is spot on. I only listen to that song for that solo. Many a times, I just fast forward to the solo
Sounds like "Here I am" from "Rock you like a hurricane"? RYLAH was 1984. "Coming under fire" was 1983
Pyromania was the most influential 80's hard rock album.... So criticizing it for sound like other bands is ridiculous. DL innovated this stuff.
@ryanjacobson2508 is this aimed at me? I said exactly that, CUF came out before RYLAH, so this song PRE-DATES the one he says it sounds like.
Def Leppard's Pyromania came out on 20 January 1983. Scorpions' Love at First Sting came out on 27 March 1984. Pat Benatar's Crimes of Passion came out on on 5 August 1980. Adjust opinions accordingly.
I believe this album was out before rock you like a hurricane. also go look at who produced this album and all the other albums he produced.
This song came out a year before "Rock You Like A Hurricane"..
You should check out some music analysis of Def Leppard. These guys knew their music theory and were masters at composition. SOme of their songs have very smooth key changes.
There wasnt anything cringy. and it sounds of the time as it was of that time. LLOL.. They are in hall of fame.
What you hear is a great producer (Mutt Lange) taking a band that is a good rock band and polishing their songs and performances into a diamond.
Mutt Lange’s first record with Def Leppard was High and Dry.
Check that one out. It sounds like a more melodic AC/DC.
One of my all time favorite guitar solos is Nuno's solo in Get The Funk Out by Extreme.
