    I replaced the throttle position sensor on my 95 GMC Sierra 1500. Afterwards my truck wouldn't start. Luckily I had seen another You Tube video that led me to believe the new sensor wasn't getting along with the old ignition control module. I bought a new module and replaced the old one and the truck started right up. And yes, the new throttle position sensor fixed my transmission's hard shift. I'm a very happy DIY'er!!!

The only mistake I did is I didn't disconnect my negative battery so for long time of working removing the dog house all three doors open my battery died drain out I just jump start with my other car then after it started I drove it bump came two times then went away while I continued driving maybe due to the transmission is trying to adapt the new TPS sensor. Alex I'm going to give that a try and report back to you and the viewers. I had a different problem with one of those throttle position switches on a Cougar I had years ago and replace it three times before I took the TB off the vehicle to see what was going on. Turns out that the throttle shaft wobbled terribly because the bushings for it were worn out. I put in new bushings and a new sensor and never had that problem again. Sadly, I had so many other problems with this pile of crap I never bought another Ford product again!

      @siaripop7 4 года назад

      @@alexsbikesandmotors Well, it was a great idea and I changed out the throttle position sensor but it didn't correct the problem. However, it does tell me the problem is somewhere in that area. I recently had an antifreeze leak between the intake manifold and heads that was repaired by a NAPA dealer. They had to remove the intake manifold so they may not have connected something properly because it is an intermittent problem. If I make right turns it will go away until I make a left turn, or so it seems. Along with the hard shifting is a slight lack of power, like a clogged injector, or one not getting the right signal for fuel.

I had a check engine light come on recently and took the vehicle to autozone to get the code read and it told us that it was an O2 sensor, which is still the case because I found out the vehicle has 4 of them and until i have further diagnostics to find out which sensor needs to be replaced... I then took the vehicle on a 400+ mile trip and experienced hard shifting upon my return. Whatever code pops up on your scanner will determine which sensor it might be. You have 1 upstream and 1 Downstream on each pipe. Pre and post catalytic converter. On my 5.7 Vortec, code 171 is bank 1 Upstream (driver side) and code 174 is bank 2 Upstream (passenger side). For example.

    I'll relate a strange one. My wife had a 2000 pontiac grand am gt. It started shifting hard enough to jerk your head back. If you put it in reverse it would jerk so hard that you thought it was going to break mounts. Also the guage cluster would go erratic. It was three days later before the check engine light came on, at that time I used the OBD scan tool, it only showed higher thaan normal voltage from the engine temperature sensor. This part cost 12$. I replaced the temp sensor and everything started working correctly. Imagine that..... The dianostic system is an open loop wired system, one sensor can affect other functions of the processor. It does happen.

    @Alex's Bikes and Motors. Hi Alex, We just bought our daughter a nice 1996 Pontiac Grand Am w/2.4L engine and either GM's 4T40E or 4T45E automatic transmission. Today, Sunday, I drove with my daughter on a 38x 2 76 mile round trip. On the way there, I noticed the trans shifting sorta hard int 2nd gear, every up-shift. As everyone says, I drive like an old man (which I am) but at any rate, over the past 25 years or so I've driven slower than most. Always in the right lane & at or below the speed limit.
    So with that said, on Friday late afternoon, 2 1/2 days ago, she came by our house so I could test drive the car. I drove it a couple miles at the way I normally drive & didn't notice it shifting hard into 2nd gear at all. But today I could sure tell it was shifting hard almost every time we started to pull away from a green light, I did ask her if it's been shifting like it was all the time. She said yes. After watching your video, which was explained well I might add, left me thinking if this may be the issue with this transmission... If she goes really slow it's not as bad but when she pulls away quick, it sure is noticeable...
    I'm going to send her a txt & ask her to either call me before she plans on going anywhere so I can drive to her place & drive the car when it's cold & see if it shifts hard like it did today.
    Since she bought it from a local used car dealer close by, I told her that there used to be a law in Michigan that did allow a buyer 72 hours to return a vehicle if it showed to have a problem like this that was not mentioned. It may or may not apply with this sale but here in Michigan it was a law, that was enforced as well....
    Now going by your video, was this a normal GM issue with a lot of their automatic transmissions. I mean this car has 96k miles & for a Michigan car, it looks good & hasn't any rust issues. Just the shifting issue. Thanks for the great video upload, MD......

      I'm not too familiar with those cars but I'm pretty sure they use the same TPS as the truck engines (part# th149), so that could be the issue. Maybe try replacing it. Are you sure the trans doesn't have a throttle valve cable? If it does it could just need adjusting. If the fluid looks good and is at the right level, and TPS or t/v cable check out good, I probably wouldnt worry too much about it. Hard shifts (within reason) don't tend to hurt transmissions in my experience. It's soft shifts and slipping you've got to worry about.

    • @montydaniels1054
      @montydaniels1054 3 года назад

      @@alexsbikesandmotors Alex, I took it out Sunday & it shifts normally, almost can't even tell it's geared it's that smooth. It's just if you start off too fast it shifts hard 1st-2nd. I told m daughter, just try not stomping so hard on the pedal... I'll look today when she stops by for cable to the trans. That's probably the one advantage with FWD, everything's under the hood.
      Now if it is just an adjustment, it shouldn't take much but in the meantime I was ordering the tcs for it & keep my fingers crossed... Thanks for the advise & the reply. I know the people who owned it wouldn't have passed a problem vehicle to us, so I'm gonna go with, it's just a GM trans thing.....

    I have a similar problem on my Hummer H2. Right now it is not shifting at all from 1 to 2. Previously would do so if car would have a speed with very high RPM, then let to rid idle without any push on acceleration and a gentle push on pedal would make a shift from 1 to 2. What hints me that it may not be trany is that actually in first gear, transmission is running very strong, even up the hill (Unlike my other prior experience with failing transmissions, where main symptom was sliding or un willing of car to have a go, even on flat surface.
    So do you think my hummer problem is also Throttle Position Sensor? And if so, the hummer h2 sensor is similar to what you show here or its entirely different.
    Anyways thanks for your great video & sharing knowledge, especially that this can potentially save thousands of dollars.

    And someone wise enough put throttle sensor inside throttle body, for better or worse.

    • @alexsbikesandmotors
      @alexsbikesandmotors  4 года назад

      yes, the transmission safe mode switches to max shift pressure, so it will shift as hard as possible. It does this because if there is any slipping in the trans or if the trans can't decide how much shift pressure to use, it defaults to max because it'll prevent slipping so the internal trans parts don't wear. I'm not sure where the internal speed sensor is on the 4L60E but you might be able to replace it by dropping the trans pan, not tearing apart the whole trans.

    Did you have a Check engine light and TPS associated codes, or did you just decide to try a new TPS?
    Here's where I'm at!
    2001 Grand Prix with a 3.1-liter motor, started idling high after good and warmed
    up. No codes at the time though.
    When motor would idle too high, 4T65E trans would shift super late under light
    throttle. About 25 MPH and 2,500 RPM before it would hit 2nd. gear.
    Was OK the next day. 3rd. day, high idle and late shift again!
    This time the check engine light did come on. Code P0121. Scanner TPS angle
    percentage at idle shows 0 sometimes, and sometimes 0.39% and ~ 100% at WOT. One
    time while sitting there idling fine, ~ 700 RPM, all at once the idle kicked up to
    ~1,300 RPM all by itself and I looked at the scanner, now TPS angle percentage went
    up to 2.75%.
    From my readings it looks to me like the sensor IS receiving the 5V reference, and
    my ground in good, and my reference voltage is changing and being sent back to the
    ECM. My voltmeter is at my buddy's garage right now, so I could not do any voltage
    testing at the TPS connector itself.
    I'm ready to take a chance based on my findings, and just install a new TPS.
    What do you think?
